RESOLVED: Internet Connection is 23 MB/s when going through router, 180 MB/s when connected direct to modem

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 02:12 PM PST

Hello again all, this is your friendly neighborhood dummy who was running a WRT54G for the last 16 years and wondering why he was stuck at <25 mb/s. If you missed it, that post is [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeNetworking/comments/f1ejz1/internet_connection_is_23_mbs_when_going_through/). Just wanted to thank everyone who helped me out and pointed to my router being from the first W. Bush administration being the root of the issue. I have since upgraded to a [Netgear Nighthawk X6S](https://www.netgear.com/home/products/networking/wifi-routers/R8000P.aspx) and I can now see into the future, walk on water, and know who shot JFK. I'm cranking along at >180mb/s download over wifi now and ~209 over ethernet cable.

    Special thanks to u/larrylombardo , u/morkman100 , u/unreasonablesteve , u/scolias , u/lordadama , u/homenetworkguy , and u/mystikincarnate for taking the time to say more than just "lolz nice router".

Any Way to Figure Out What IP Range ISP Delegated on IPv6

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 09:02 AM PST

Like the title says. I am trying to find out which IPs my ISP gave me. Supposedly they delegate a /64 and I am trying to find out if this is true or if they are providing a /56 or /64. From testing I think it is only a /64 but want to know which IPs I have so I can plan my internal network.

I have Ethernet ports around my apartment but no internet access through them

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 06:12 PM PST

Hi, I recently moved into my place and noted that there are Ethernet ports in each room. I was wondering if it was possible to route internet through them. I have access to the network panel but unfortunately the wiring is hidden. I was wondering if an electrician can help me with my situation. I'm currently using power line to supply internet to my pc but the speeds are reduced tremendously. On wifi I have 540 mbps download but on power line only 27mbps. I've uploaded a picture of the panel on my user. Please click on my username to take a look at it. Thanks!

New Construction: Wiring for future cameras

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 04:56 PM PST

I'm about to build a new house and I'm curious about how to wire for cameras. Some cams will be deployed immediately, some added later if needed. Probably end up with about 8 cams outdoors. Maybe a few more. All of them will be installed in the eaves/soffit. I'm currently using reolink cams with blueiris but I'm leaning towards migrating to unifi video. Either way, same wiring.

So my question is, how would I terminate the wiring for the future cameras? For the ones deployed immediately, I could just drop the cable through the soffit, but I don't want random cables hanging down for future cameras, if they even get installed. Other case may be that I wire for two cams in one location but only install one with a future second if needed (ie, corner of house).

    What's everyone's suggestions?

    Home Network Mesh Setup?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 08:23 PM PST

I have an Asus RT-N66u Router and an ap extender currently. I want to upgrade to a mesh network over the entire house. I dont think I can use this existing equipment based on what I have been reading?? I like the Asus brand but I am looking for any suggestions on what to buy. It seems like I could get a wireless router that does mesh and an extender that also does mesh or do I really need to get two actual routers? I am also not looking to get the latest and greatest if there isnt an extreme benefit. Thanks for the help!

Recommendations for router for under £130 ,more info below

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 07:34 PM PST

Our virgin media super hub 3 simply can't keep up with the amount of WiFi connected devices in our house now and I need a suitable router that can handle the following

2 Alexa's , 1 Google home ,up to 5 phones at one time, an iPad, 4 smart TVs and ideally an additional 10 devices for guests and future expandability

Gaming pcs are hooked via ethernet and get solid 220/20 which is what we pay for, and connection never drops out, only if the entire system in the area goes down

Even with minimal devices connected however, the WiFi still drops massively and no matter how we reset or ring virgin nothing fixed it, have had 2 replacement to no avail

Would like the router to have the ability to prioritise devices, and idk if it's even a thing but the ability to schedule devices to be on and off the WiFi would be awesome but this isn't necessary

How do I know it's the router? Cause I have a mancave in the garden running off its own dedicated switch and access point which never drops WiFi connection at all, there are obviously less devices on it but still applies

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated, router is an open area at least 5m from the nearest microwave and is getting sufficient cool air and clearance

Two isp one wifi, can it work?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 07:06 PM PST

I know you can use a switch to create a single network with two isp and then setup PC's to use different gateways for each isp. But how can you do this on WiFi?

The reason for the split is that each isp provides a 5 mbits speed. So the owner of the place decided on using two isp to "double" the speed

I am trying to figure out the best way to combine both isp on a single WiFi network if it's even possible. Or should I use different SSID?

    Thanks

Ethernet not working at Motel 6

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 06:35 PM PST

So I'm here at this motel 6 for 2-3 weeks and the WiFi is not able to let me enjoy any games/streams. They have a Coax cable running into an xfinity box that connects to the TV. This box has an Ethernet port. I plug in my cord and it flashes green, but my PS4 won't pick it ups

So I undid coax cable and just tried my modem I was using, and it doesn't work. I don't think it's my Ethernet cord... so is it possible they disabled it somehow to only work with TV?

Thinking of changing out the router - suggestions?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 06:16 PM PST

    Currently running:

    - SB6190 modem + DD-WRT AC1900 T-Mobile Router (RTAC-68U)

It ran well for a while, but now I suspect the router is the issue as it goes down more frequently lately and rebooting the router usually brings the connection back up for a while (sometimes it quickly goes back down minutes later)

The modem is about 4 months old. I've had issues after installing DD-WRT in the past, and I suspect it might be related (it's been on there for at least a couple months, though)

I'm looking at smallnetbuilder and the K3C seems like good value but I've used it at both for work and family, and reliability was a bit shaky in both scenarios, so I'm gonna avoid that.

    Install is for

    - 850Sq ft property

    - Currently, the bed room gets ok connection but interference seems to suggest it could be better. The coax is in a corner placed completely opposite from bedroom and rerouting it is a pain in this scenario, so I'd like to avoid that.

    - Only about 6 devices connected (2 phones, 2 hardwired desktops, 2 fire sticks)

    - No heavy LAN transfers

    - 200Mbps down / 20 up connection which may change later this year to 1Gbps both ways

What do you guys think about an EdgeRouter X + Unifi AP-AC Long Range? Or something else perhaps?

    Nextcloud internal routing issue

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 06:14 PM PST

My setup is a Nextcloud server running inside of an OPNSense router/firewall. The Nextcloud is on an Ubuntu box with apache2 / PHP7.

I cannot get to the Nextcloud instance from inside the network, but it doesn't seem to be a straightforward reflection/NAT issue. I am able to reach the root webpage from the server (just URL, no directories), just not the url/nextcloud/index.php page. The error is "The connection has timed out," and the apache log shows that the request was valid and replied to.

What's curious to me is that the Nextcloud instance is fully functional from outside the network, or if I use a local non-internet routable URL, or the server's IP address. I've been trying to comb through firewall logs from ufw on the server and the OPNSense firewall, but not coming up with anything.

    Any thoughts?

    Follow-up: encrypted DNS

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 11:50 AM PST

OK - so encrypted DNS is a huge mess as far as I can tell. There are four solutions it seems like:

    1. DNScrypt - outdated?
    2. DNS over TLS - potentially blockable?
    3. DNS over HTTPS - slightly more hidden since it looks more like https; but also means that if I want to implement parental controls, that will be difficult?
    4. Running my own DNS server - vulnerable to cache poisoning, another thing to maintain, etc.

Then there is also SNI/ESNI and other issues.

So... what is the best solution?

My gateway seems to be unable to access udp ports

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 05:12 PM PST

My motorola mg7550 has had issues in the past with nat type and very specific games. Recently I purchase a Nintendo switch and I actually cant play a single game online due to having nat type f. I've done all the troubleshooting and what not, nothing worked but that's kinda besides the point. I believe I figured out the actual issue and it's that my gateway is denying access to all udp ports I've tested so far. Atleast that's what simple port tester by pcwintech says. All TCP ports seek to connect fine. I've contacted my ISP and manufacturer to pretty much be told that I have internet and they dont see the problem. I'd love any advice that can be given, including suggestions as to how to decide on a gateway/ router and modem that wouldn't have these issues. I should add I have tried port forwarding, disabling my gateway security, and even dmzing my computer in hopes that those udp ports would work but they did not. I also typically have upnp enabled. I'm definently not that knowledgable on networking so any and all help is appreciated greatly.

How to setup Google Fiber with TP-Link Managed Switch (to bypass the network puck they gave me)

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 05:01 PM PST

    I have this switch

    But V3 instead.

Google gave me a network puck, which is what they are using to force out the network box.

Because of this, I have no "network management" page when you go to adjust router settings, etc., instead I have to use the google fiber WiFi app, which doesn't let me customize much.

I have that T2600G switch (which I will be swapping out with a new one because PoE doesn't work). I have 2 TP-Link AP's (EAP225 - AC1350) that are right now powered by injector until I swap switches.

Can I configure this switch enough to bypass the puck all together - while just being connected directly to the fiber jack?

Can I do it securely to keep private network private - (I assume by VLAN - but how)

So really, if all is possible - how do I set this all up? I haven't messed with a managed switch in 10+ years but I somewhat was able to get things working. With that, right now I am still feeding my network through the puck - which also broadcast its WiFi which I cannot manage in depth like I can with devices connect to the AP's.

I have full access to the switch and both AP's gui interface, so I don't have to go through putty for the switch.

I feel like I am bugging everyone here, but when I try to google anything with the word "swtich" - I get nintendo results.

    ASUS guest network keeps disappearing

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 04:51 PM PST

We have an RT-AC88U as our main home router with a couple blue cave units as mesh units. Our primary WiFi is the 5/2G "smart" setup means we only have one SSID and the devices switch automatically, and we have a 2G guest network without internal access for WiFi Power Outlets etc.

The problem I am having is since I set it up this way, even though there are no time or data limits set for the guest network, I have noticed it disappears after about 24 hours of running. I cannot use the WiFi Power Outlets, and even my other devices can not locate the guest network. No settings have changed and a router reset from the web interface fixes the problem.

Setting Up Apartment Patch Panel for Wired Ethernet

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 04:45 PM PST

    Hi guys,

I've lived in my new construction apartment for about a year and am finally ready to light the place up with wired Ethernet using the patch panel located my bedroom closet. Problem is I've having trouble deciphering how the panel and what additional equipment I will need, if any, to get things working. Photos and a a description of the current setup are as follows:

    Photo Album: https://imgur.com/a/VOkrs6Y

Image 1 is the upper portion of the patch panel (closet is narrow so I had so split it up). Looks like the wiring for the Ethernet drops throughout the apartment, a coax splitter for cable TV. Not sure what the gray wiring on the left is - phone line, maybe?

Image 2 is the lower portion of the patch panel. Honestly not sure what either of these boxes are for.

Image 3 is one of the drop panels that are installed throughout the apartment. Each panel has coax, Ethernet, and HDMI.

Image 4 is the back of my Cox modem/router combo unit.

Current setup: The modem/router is currently in my home office, on the opposite side of the apartment from the patch panel in my bedroom closet. The modem is connected to the drop panel in the office via coax. I think it connects to the "street" line via the coax barrel adapter in the patch panel.

What I need to do, I think, is move the modem to the bedroom and reconnect it via the coax barrel that's already in the patch panel. From there, I'll need to purchase an 8-port switch - connect the modem to one port and the others to each of the Ethernet drops. If I'm understanding everything correctly, this should enable the Ethernet in all of the other rooms, yes?

Connecting NAS to network via wifi (client bridge) to stream 4k video reliably

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 06:10 AM PST

I have a Synology NAS and a home server with no wifi adapters, only ethernet ports.

I want to connect them to my home network over wifi (I have a mesh network using Orbi RBR20). I cannot run a cable, use MoCa or Powerline. I cannot use USB wifi adapters with the NAS or the home server.

Therefore I'm looking for a device that:

    - can act in client mode / client bridge mode (I want everything on the same subnet)

    - supports 802.11ac

    - is very reliable – I want to stream UHD movies using Plex / DLNA

    - optional: has two ethernet ports so I don't have to buy an extra switch

    - is available in UK

    What I tried:

    - I tried to use my spare TP-Link router. It doesn't have any client mode but it does have WDS repeater mode. I successfully connected the router to my home network and shared the connection over ethernet. Then my laptop started randomly disconnecting from the wifi. Also the router started randomly disconnecting from the network, requiring both my Orbi and the TP-Link router to be restarted. This happened multiple times and stopped happening after I powered off the router. (DHCP was turned off).

    - I bought a USB wifi adapter for the Synology NAS on the list of supported devices. It didn't work. I tried to cross-compile the drivers but it's far from straightforward.

    - I tried to use the built-in wifi adapter for my home server but I have a lot of Docker containers and it's nice to assign some of them separate IPs using macvlan networks which requires ethernet (macvlan doesn't work over wifi, ipvlan doesn't work for me either).

    - I searched for AC wifi routers on ebay, went through manuals of about 10 of them and found out none of them support client / client bridge modes any more. It seems that modern routers only support WDS repeater modes. Client modes are thing of the past.

    - I searched for devices advertised as media bridge (as suggested in another Reddit thread). I found one on ebay - ASUS EA-AC87 - however it has a lot of negative reviews on Amazon. It seems like these are low-end devices that are specifically advertised to gamers.

Will a Transparent Proxy prevent my real IP from being exposed and protect me from being DoSed by an attacker?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 04:30 PM PST

This might be the wrong place to ask this but on my PS4 there is an option to use a Proxy and for some reason it only lets me use Transparent Proxies and doesn't let me use Anonymous Proxies, I was wondering if a Transparent Proxy will be enough to protect me from someone pulling my real IP and booting me offline.

I'm asking this because I read somewhere that Transparent Proxies apparently send some sort of identification to the server you're connected to and the Transparent Proxy only acts as a gateway with no real protection and I'm wondering if my real IP has any chance of being exposed while playing games. I get booted offline a lot and I want to make sure that it stops, I'm unfortunately stuck with a static IP and at one point in time someone I played against in a videogame got mad at me and booted me offline every day for a month and a half straight and my internet was only really usable once in awhile during the attack. With the most recent attack someone booted me offline every day for the entire week during certain hours and it wasn't my ISP having problems or having maintenance.

    No access through ethernet switch

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 04:21 PM PST

Okay so this is starting to drive me nuts. I recently rearranged all of my gear and now everything plugged my ethernet switch doesn't connect to the network.

I have my modem connected to the router, which connects to my PC and to the network switch. My PC works fine connected to the router, but not plugged into the switch. I bought a new switch, which didn't solve me issue. I bought a new router, which didn't solve my issue. I've switched out ethernet cables. I'm not sure what else to try.

The lights on the back of the switch are activated like it is communicating with the devices, but it's like it's blocking going into the route. I'm hoping someone has an idea!

    Thanks in advance.

Help! Slow Speeds, Need New Router [Fios]

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 04:18 PM PST

    Howdy,

Looking for some guidance. I have Verizon Fios and am supposed to get 100/100 MBPS. I also have a MI424WR router that I've had for years. Upon doing a speed test I only get 20/15 MBPS so I'm thinking of getting a new router as this is ridiculous.

I was considering this one, the Archer A7 but I'm actually not sure how to connect it. Do I have to use the current router to connect it? I don't have a separate modem (that I know about), just the orange Verizon router.

I suppose my questions are, what do I need to get better speeds, and will that router work with my Fios setup? If not, what should I get that'll fix my horrendous internet.

    Thank you!

    Help with Power line adapters

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 12:32 PM PST

Hello! I'll get straight to the point.

    I have a 4 bedroom house, shared with a few roommates. I am very interested in setting up a power line adapter with one sender in my room, and the 3 receivers in my room. I have a few questions regarding this errand;

a.) Will having multiple receivers on the same sender affect the connection in any significant manner?

b.) If I have a nice router, would it make more sense to connect the sender to my router, or to my modem?

c.) Do any of you have specific product reccomendations? I have Gigabyte internet, so I likewise need adapters that are atleast capable of gigabyte speeds.

    Thank you for your help!
