I am switching ISPs from Verizon to Comcast Back to Verizon to lower costs.

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 07:51 AM PST

I plan to switch ISPs from Verizon to Comcast back to Verizon to lower my monthly bill. I love FiOS internet, but I currently pay $120+ for a FiOS gigabit triple play plan. I never watch cable TV, don't have a landline hooked up, and probably don't need gigabit speeds.

Has anyone done the ISP switch to lower your monthly bill? What was your experience? Was it worth the hassle to save $40-$60 a month? How long did you have to keep the new service (in my case Comcast) before switching back to your original ISP (Verizon) to be considered a "new customer"?

Any help/insights would be much appreciated – Thanks

Edit— wow this blew up a little bit. Thank you all for the feedback. Sorry meetings ate away my afternoon. I live alone so no roommate option. My current pricing info is from a call a couple of month ago and a recent chat message with a customer service rep. I'll try to answer below posts. Thanks again!

Best option for home + long range?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 06:49 AM PST

I'm moving into a home in the coming weeks and exploring my options. I'm also very much a beginner to networking. The information here is helpful, but overwhelming. My new home is a single story, 2,500 sq ft home out in the country, so very few neighbors. It's currently got coax in a few of the rooms, although they would have to be moved to end up where I want them if I utilize these. I do a little gaming but the main usage will be streaming. I also do some 3D modeling through a VPN to my office servers occasionally; this gets pretty intensive now as I'm on WiFi, but in the new home I'll have an office and be able to plug in my laptop.

I also want to hit a barn roughly 350 feet away with a direct line of sight. Main goal there would be to control things like chicken coop doors, security, gardening equipment, etc. Trenching a cable could be an option, but I want to explore my other options as well.

My ISP is charter spectrum and I don't have blazing fast speeds, but I would like to future proof to an extent.

Based on what I've read, a unify dream machine with AC LITE AP's and a point to point bridge seems to be recommended, but I've read that there is a lot of tweaking and setup involved. I would prefer something simple to set up and doesn't require maintenance. The point to point equipment seems pretty expensive as well.

Since I've already got coax, should I go with a MoCa setup, or should I just run new Ethernet and save the cost of adapters since the coax connections would have to be moved to different rooms anyway? I'm not even sure if the coax are long enough to reach where I need them as I haven't crawled around under the house yet.

I also haven't ruled out a mesh system like Eero, or a more "traditional" type of router (I just bought a Netgear Nighthawk AC1750, but I'm worried it won't give me the coverage I need for the new house).

I feel like the more I read, the more I go in circles. Of course I would prefer to do this as cheap as possible, but I'm not sure what is reasonable to expect.

    Intel Pro/1000 version question.

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 12:13 PM PST

So I'm building a pfSense box and am looking for a capable NIC. The Intel Pro/1000 seems to be the most recommended, but there's like ten different versions (vt, pt, et, gt, etc.). Which one should I be getting? The box will be functioning as a firewall and router on a 1gbps LAN/wlan network with about 30 wired and wireless devices, and will be feeding a Cisco managed switch and wireless AP.

Linksys EA7500 gives me better speeds and range than a UAC AC PRO

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 05:37 PM PST

So after getting and properly setting up my UAC AC PRO with the ER-X, I tested the speeds and range around the house and they're not as good as my affordable linksys router, infact the UAC AC PRO with all the optimal settings still wont get a higher than 400 down speed, and as soon as i move a bit further away from it, like the garage, the speed drops down to 100, while the linksys in the same positioning gives me 300down, or 400-500 if fairly close to it, im thinking of returning it and getting my money back, or maybe exchaning it for the nanoHD, any thoughts?

New Fiber internet, existing phone lines?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 05:30 PM PST

Hello all, I got fiberoptic internet a while back. I used to have a landline that ran over my entire house, and there are many existing ports that are useless as we speak. I was just wondering if I could convert these to Ethernet ports somehow - my new internet easily gets 100MB speeds, but the wifi reception is weak in certain rooms (my gaming and streaming room). I've been getting by with a Powerline Adapter for a while, but it only gets about 40% performance of my true speeds. I really need Ethernet to this room, but running a cable through the house/frame is not an option due to my family's request. How can I utilize these existing telephone lines/plugs?

Way too many options to pick from - looking for real-world experience?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 05:05 PM PST

Uve been running an edgerouter for a while a quite like it. Recently I bought an amplifi hd mesh system , but I'm really not happy with it and plan on returning it.

I'd like to go with a full unifi setup - I have a spare computer I can use to run the controller software - where I get hung up is what access points that would work best. I've got a 2500 sq foot house and I'm looking for a strong signal in the back yard.

So I'm thinking a good solution would be an access point on the main floor, basement and an outdoor one in the back yard? I'm just lost as to which access points would work best for me?

Help figuring out what I need

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 07:31 PM PST

Hello everyone I am totally confused on what I need for my new house to cover dead spots and have strong signal. My house is a two story with basement(3800sq. ft). I have an Airport Extreme currently with Comcast(200mbs). The Airport Extreme was great in my old house which was a 2200sq. ft rambler but its not cutting it anymore. Dead spots and slow speeds away from the base. My internet comes into my house through the basement and I have an ethernet port on each level to use for mesh or some other configuration. I would like to stay under $400-$500 to get coverage throughout the whole house. I guess Im confused if I need mesh or AP stuff with a different router or if I can use my current router along with other stuff. Thanks for any help that you have to offer.

    Basement Networking Solution

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 06:21 PM PST

    Hi All,

First of all, I am somewhat of a newbie, so please be easy on me.

For reference, I live in Canada and am using Bell Fibe with the Homehub 3000. The Homehub 3000 modem/wireless router combo has 1 WAN port (unused because of the Fiber connection) and 4 LAN ports (all currently unused). It is currently on the main floor.

I am finishing my basement and I wanted to put in some ethernet wiring before the drywalling. Also, while the basement does get wifi signal, it isn't the best, so I was thinking of putting a wireless AP down there.

Here are my questions. 1. Can I connect a switch to one of the LAN ports in the modem/router to handle all the basement connections including the wireless AP down there?

    1. Will this require me to disable the wireless capabilites of my Homehub? If not, wouldn't the signals of the two access points (Homehub and the basement AP) cause interference with each other?

    2. Would any connected devices automatically migrate between the two access points? Or does this require a smarter mesh wifi network?

    3. Finally, will I be able to see and network with all of the connected devices in my local network?

Thank you all so much. Any advice for which switch, access point, or even mesh wifi product to buy would also be greatly appreciated.

    OpenVPN Server messes with AP

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 02:11 PM PST

Apologies if some people have seen me post this in other forums but I'm really struggling to get an answer. I have a home network setup of a pfSense box coupled with an Ubiquiti pro AP. On top I'm running a VPN client on the pfSense box for all my WAN traffic. Works wonderfully well.

However, I have a weird issue in that I'm trying to also run a OpenVPN server on the pfSense box for remote access (taking advantage of my static IP), but as soon as I fire it up it breaks my AP. Wired devices continue to have no issues.

The AP will begin by failing to breakout to the internet, with intermittent busts of connection, before steadily getting worse and dying altogether. I can ping the AP from the router, and the controller software still sees it as "up", but I can't access it via CLI while the OpenVPN server is running. As soon as I disable it, the AP behaves fine again. I can replicate the issue in another way too. If use the mobile APP from my VPN provider to connect to my static VPN server while connected via the AP (and by extension already connected to the same VPN) it will also exhibit the same issue, but only on that wireless device. Other VPN servers work fine on top of my router one.

I've done a packet log with the VPN on and off, but I'm not sure what I'm looking for. The only glaring difference I can see was between this with no VPN:

    7:23:56.175545 IP6 fe80::1:1 > ff02::16: HBH ICMP6, multicast listener report v2, 1 group record(s), length 28 17:23:56.624851 IP6 fe80::b25a:daff:fe87:7d6a.546 > ff02::1:2.547: UDP, length 96 17:23:56.771531 ARP, Request who-has 192.168.0.1 tell 192.168.0.113, length 46 17:23:56.771542 ARP, Reply 192.168.0.1 is-at 00:90:27:e5:11:23, length 28

    and with:

    17:26:59.125504 IP6 fe80::1:1 > ff02::16: HBH ICMP6, multicast listener report v2, 1 group record(s), length 28 17:26:59.292708 ARP, Request who-has 192.168.0.1 tell 192.168.0.113, length 46 17:26:59.292720 ARP, Reply 192.168.0.1 is-at 00:90:27:e5:11:23, length 28 17:26:59.356876 f8:e9:4e:ac:33:c5 > ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff Null Supervisory, Receiver not Ready, rcv seq 64, Flags [Poll], length 46

Driving me slightly mad. I've messed with the OpenVPN server settings (Port used, Tunnel Network) but it doesn't make any difference.

Asked on Netgate/Ubiquiti forums but no joy.

Can anyone decipher from this event log what is causing my internet to drop for ~5 seconds every couple hours?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 10:04 AM PST

I have a Verizon G1100 router that seems to lose connection to the internet for 5-10 seconds every couple hours. This log snapshot was taken a few minutes after one of those disconnects happened.

If it makes any difference, the cable from outside comes to the G1100 router. Plugged into the G1100 router is a CAT5e going to my desktop computer, and the other CAT5e going to my Google Nest Wifi.

Can somebody tell me what is causing these drops?

Using another modem to configure nas

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 01:42 PM PST

I'm planning on creating NAS. I've read that you can plug in hard disks in modems to create nas but, my modem doesnt have an usb port so i've found a second hand modem thats very cheap and has a usb connection (port is blue, type b, [doesnt specify in datasheet which version 2 or 3]). But it doesnt have a wifi connection as far as i can tell. What i plan to do is get this modem, plug a hdd and config nas and connect it via ethernet port on both modems. My main modem has 4 ethernet ports and the secondary one has 2.
My questions are; would connecting the second modem via ethernet enable me to use it as NAS? Can i see the files in my laptop upstairs thats connected via wifi for example?

Also i dont have an external hdd, im planning on using a sata to usb cable because that's what i have at my hand. It has to usb ports, one for extra power. Would getting a type a female to type b male connector right? I dont have any experience and i know my English is not very good, but please ask any more info you would need and i will try to answer.

    BTW, second modem has UPnP

    Need help: Printer setup

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 01:33 PM PST

Currently I have a printer that is connected to my PC through usb cable. What I want is instead of connecting it to my PC, is it possible for it to connected to a switch and my PC can detect it? The reason being is that I want to let another PC use the printer but through my switch.

I've two diagrams to visualize what I'm talking about.

The switch, PS4, PC1 and the printer is at my room while PC2 is at another room. The router is at my living room which I don't want to put my printer at.

    Current setup: https://imgur.com/dxcIDfV

Desired setup so that PC2 can use the printer as well: https://imgur.com/Q62yU0e

So is the second picture possible?

How to direct inbound web traffic routing based on requesting URL

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 04:57 PM PST

I'll start by detailing some of my network and servers and then explain what i want it to do.

Comcast Modem > UniFi USG Pro > UniFi XG Switch

    FreeNAS Server

Currently, I have to give different port numbers to the items not on the IIS server such as using port 81 82 83 84 and 85. However, it does cause problems with certain services and it is difficult to use SSL on those other services. I would like to be able to have the USG or another device like a raspberry pi or a VM receive these requests and redirect them to the correct server based on the URL making the request.

I hope someone can help me with this.

    Thanks Redditers

Specific Websites Failing Over Home Network

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 04:53 PM PST

    Hey guys,

This is a total shot in the dark, and quite a weird situation. I have no idea if anyone can help me out. I live a small apartment building with 8 units, and one of the tenants has a large wireless network that he provides to all the renters for a nominal fee. It's gigabit symmetrical. Should be great.

But intermittently, I lose partial or full access to a variety of websites. These include Youtube (will load text elements only), Netflix (will not connect to server), Microsoft, Facebook and a bunch of others. Sometimes it lasts a few hours, or days. Other websites load fine. Speedtests are also incredibly slow. Ping tests are weird too. Can ping youtube for instance, but all packets to Netflix are lost.

Here's where it gets weird, the problem is specific to my laptop. No other device on the network experiences any problems, including my phone. I've asked him about it (he's an IT professional allegedly) and we tried to work it out several times. The problem persists over ethernet connection. However, running my laptop through a VPN totally solves the issue. All websites load fine. Down/up speeds are 10x faster over the VPN when I'm having this problem. I don't have any crazy network settings modified on my laptop. Firewalls have been disabled. I did a Windows reset too. Tried changing DNS servers to Google or OpenDNS. Still an issue. edit: also an issue across all browsers, same websites affected.

I suspect there's some issue between my laptop and the router. But because this isn't my network, I can't go fiddling with router settings to figure it out. I'm fine to keep paying for a NordVPN account, but I would prefer to figure this out somehow. Anyone have any insights?

Orbi Mesh Wifi - Use a Ethernet switch?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 04:11 PM PST

    Hi folks,

I recently installed the Netgear Orbi RBK23 mesh system in my home, and so far it's fantastic. The only issue I'm running into is regarding the number of ethernet ports included on the router. Only one input is included, which is a concern as I have a media server, Philips hue hub and in the near future a NAS that would require ethernet connections. So my question is, can I use a regular ethernet switch to expand the number of ethernet ports (something like this https://www.amazon.ca/TP-Link-TL-SG1005D-1000Mbps-Gigabit-Capacity/dp/B000N99BBC/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=ethernet+switch&qid=1582762247&sr=8-3)?

    Thanks so much!

Netgear Nighthawk R8000 not receiving full internet speed?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 04:11 PM PST

Having some issues with my router recently. I pay for a gigabit connection. I understand that it's not guaranteed but I know I should get pretty close.

When connected directly to the modem, I get around 7-800 mbps. Fine and dandy.

When I connect to the 5G router, I get maybe 2-300. This hasn't been an issue before so I'm pretty confused. Even if I plug directly into the router the speed stays consistent with the WiFi speed.

I have Qos off, don't have access control on, and have tried factory resetting the router.

Is it possible that my router is just failing and I need to replace it? Or is there something obvious I'm missing?

Trying to find a Switch for my needs.

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 10:08 AM PST

Hi! 4 days ago I received a lot of help and purchased an Uniquiti NanoHD, was perfect for my needs!

My setup is now: Wan > 4 port BASIC Switch > AC86U (wifi disabled) in port 1 and NANOHD in port2 (for all wifi devices)

I want to finish my setup, hope you can help me again! I want a switch with VLAN. Don´t need something super special, just a little one (4 ports are enough) with VLAN so I can issolate the IOT things from my AC86U (my personal server and all my info is stored in servers tied to it). With that switch I will be able to use another 2 more ethernet IOT things isolated in a VLAN (right now they are unplugged)

I was thinking on the Ubiquiti Edgerouter X, I know that is a router but have an option to use it only as a switch. It has poe too, I think I could power the NANOHD with it. The problem...I think is a bit old, dont know if the speed would be ok (I am not downloading all day, most time my network is quiet, but I have 1Ghz speed connection).

Another choices are TP-Link SG105E and Netgear GS305E, I think they are "pure switches" and more new, dont know if the speed would be better.

    Thanks lot in advance!

Trying to find my IP address from a remote location

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 04:02 PM PST

I have a beach house in NC and live 385 miles north in Maryland. I have IP cameras but loose them once a month because the power goes out, my cable modem and router reset and the IP address changes. Aside from battery back up and/or static IP (business solution) how can I get my IP address remotely? service provider doesn't help, says they can't tell and I don't blame them really. I'd call help desk once a month for my IP address. Any ideas how to go about getting my IP address when I am remote location?

Extender maxs at 30 mbps, is that normal?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 04:01 PM PST

I live in an apartment that is about 1000 square feet and has a long hallway. When we are in the bedroom WiFi is super slow at times. I have a Netgear router and bought a Netgear extender. When I'm near the router on my normal network I get 199 mbps. Standing in the same spot on the Extender network, I get 30, and it's a bit lower in the bedroom. Should the Extender have similar speeds to my normal network or are these results typical for an Extender?

    Would this setup work?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 08:20 AM PST

Little confused on this home network stuff. I have my cable internet from my isp and I'm trying to figure out how to setup a small network.

Would cable modem to switch to wireless router as a access point work?

I'll only have 1 pc and 3 TVs wired and everything else will be over WiFi.

Also, would unmanaged be better than managed?

    Thanks

Disney+ not working amongst other issues after upgrading megs

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 03:37 PM PST

I have satellite internet and I use the nighthawk router. Disney+ worked fine when I first got it. Then I contacted my ISP to have them up the megs; boom disney quit working. And Hulu too. If I open the app on my phone while on wifi same error. Connect on 4G, works fine. Additionally, I bought a TCL and xbox one, same issue. However on the TCL the amazon prime video app says that it cannot play a movie when I try because I'm connected to a VPN. Which I do not use a VPN. But I can use the Amazon Prime App while on wifi on a different TV. And to add to it, ever since I upped the megs I often times will get a captchas pretty frequently when I surf the internet. So, I'm pretty sure this is an issue with the ISP/IP/Router. Any idea on steps I can take to get this all running smoothly?
