    Coaxial Amplifier troubleshooting question

    https://imgur.com/a/O0gSpJf

I'm trying to connect a new TV box to my coaxial amplifier but I'm running into an issue - there's 3 open slots not being used but they're being blocked by what seems like a cap. When I try to twist/unscrew it it stays in place.

Complete noob here. How do I take these things off so I can plug my coaxial cable into the amp?

(The first 2 ports are the ones I'm referring to and they have a little rubber thing attached as well).

Are Fios set top box devices really just network devices? Can I split a coax line and have one for my STB and another converted back to Ethernet?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 05:03 PM PST

I'm pretty tech savvy and have studied networking in the past. I enjoy continuing to learn and upgrade my own "tech-life" with what I learn.

When I lived at my parents, I decided to run cat5e to my room from my FiOS router for the best connection possible. I have since moved out and now lease a single family home with 2 roommates. We also have FiOS service at my new place with the same equipment (ONT outside the house, quantum gateway router inside the house, and 5 STBs).

Since I don't own the property, I don't want to try to run cat5e through the house. I was looking into possible solutions to the disconnecting issues I've experienced on my PS4, which I would like to try connecting wired.

I began researching and discovered MoCa. As I understand it, MoCa is a way to distribute network traffic/connections using the existing coax infrastructure in the house. The FiOS quantum gateway router has a coax port and it is used to "inject" network traffic/signal into the coaxing wiring, which I turns goes to wherever the cabling is installed around the house. This means one can have an internet connection without having to instal cat5e and instead use a coax port already installed in the walls.

As I studied MoCa and how it works, I got curious and checked my my routers web interface for more information and saw that it shows STBs as having a connection type as "Hardware MoCa".

    So my question is:

    1) Are FiOS cable set top boxes really just network devices?

    2) Can I split the existing coax line in my room and have one for my cable STB and then convert the other to regular Ethernet with a MoCa adapter?

Ultimately, I'd like to have the MoCa adapter go to a small 4 port switch.

Devices slow to reconnect after restart, should I update my router?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 06:05 PM PST

Hey Guys, I have a Archer C3150 v2 which works okay. However, whenever I restart it for whatever reason, it takes hour or more for all my devices to eventually reconnect. I have around 34 wireless devices and none of them connect any time after the restart. Even my Note 9 won't reconnect, its gets unable to obtain IP address.

So I got pretty frusrated today and went to best buy and they had Nighthawk X6 on sale so I picked it up. But before I open it up and try to swap it out... Will this have the same problem? Is this just the way things work with wireless devices all trying to reconnect at the same time? I'm not expecting everything to reconnect instantly after restart but waiting a hour or so seems a little excessive for things to get back up and running.

    Router Upgrade

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 11:45 AM PST

Looking to get a new router as I'm having issues with my current router (Asus RT-AC1900) , it randomly just craps out and comes back on, or has to be rebooted. Was wonder what would be best for my current setup.

    Modem: Arris SB6183 (Spectrum 400)

WiFi devices: Roku Ultra, 2 Roku Sticks (Rokus used to stream AT&T TV Now), 1 Laptop, 3 iPads (Gen 4 and 2 Mini 4), 2 Galaxy Note 10 Plus', 2 Galaxy s10e's, 2 Moto g7 Power's, 2 Amazon Echos and Nintendo Switch.

Ethernet Devices: Desktop Gaming Computer, Laptop, PS4, AT&T Osprey Box (TV Now), MagicJack, and Electric Company Monitor.

Should I stick with WiFi 5 or upgrade to WiFi 6?

Been looking at the TP-Link AX50 or AX3000 (Walmart), not sure of the difference besides $20 and USB 2.0 on the Walmart one.

Lots of streaming videos, downloading, etc. - Unbearable lag while gaming, how to deal with this? Would a good router with QoS type settings solve it?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 02:26 PM PST

Hey, I'm rather new to home networking.

I'm in Canada and currently have Rogers Gigabit package 1000Mbps down 40Mbps up average.

The modem rental they give is $10 a month for a Hitron CODA-4582U with locked out features/firmware.

    My issue is this:

I'm currently living with a lot of people. There are always 3-5 other people here pretty much always connected (Netflix is basically always on, people are watching videos online, streaming to 3 Chromecasts, Instagram scrolling, Reddit, listening to music, youtube, twitch, gaming on xbox/pc, and there is always 5 phones connected and occasionally 1-2 laptops.)

It isn't always a problem, it doesn't happen when I'm alone, but when everyone is online doing their thing this shit happens...

    What I've tried:

    • I've already contacted Rogers numerous times, they've tested my line each time and have said that there is no underlying issue, during each test, there was never any real latency though. The only thing related to my issue that was said is that we have a lot of devices connected and that is probably the cause.
    • I'm personally hooked up with a Cat6 Bare-Copper ethernet cable directly to the modem. I've tried other cables and it changed nothing. I've also updated my PC's Network drivers, updated the Modem and Rogers has even opted to replace the modem several times with no luck.
    • I've made sure everyone knows basic local internet etiquette in regards to not torrenting or seeding, warning before downloading something big, etc.

I also have some questions that I can't find a solid answer to that I would really appreciate some help with:

    • Is this a problem I can fix with a new modem/router?
    • Should I keep renting the rogers modem or replace it?
    • Would I benefit from replacing the modem? Or should I get a new router and keep the modem in Pass-Through mode?
    • Which router should I get if so? Online information seems to be all over the place, I just want to be able to split up the bandwidth/
    • Does enabling WMM(QoS) over wifi affect Ethernet in any way? It makes sense that it should be on, but it's only for wireless connections, does that negatively affect ethernet or do ethernet connections just bypass this?
    • How can I go about tracking who is at fault for the lag? Everyone is willing to work together to sort this out, if we could immediately narrow it down to specific devices it would be a game-changer on its own.

Any thoughts, opinions, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My main question: Could this be solved with just a new router? If so, what's recommended for my situation? Should/Could we be aiming for something that limited each user to so much bandwidth at any given time?

    Forwarding based on domain name

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 01:10 PM PST

    Hi all,

I currently have a two webservers running locally in my homenetwork, these are on two different hosts with different internal IP's. Now I want to make these websites available to the internet but they'd both need to be available on port 80/443 so I wouldn't be able to use port forwarding for this. I've only got one external IP address.

Is there a way to have another server that sits in between the router and the webservers to forward these requests based on their domain name to the correct server? How would I be able to implement this? Or is there another easier way to be able to achieve this?

As a sidenote I'd also like to automate the renewal of let's encrypt for both of these domains so I would need port 80 open on both since LE doesn't allow requests on another port.

I've drawn a simplified diagram of what I mean: Link

    Creating a pass-through wall jack?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 05:04 AM PST

So I have a server closet, with a patch panel on the north wall of the closet. I would like to move the server out of the closet, and into a room that is just on the other side of the south wall of the closet.

I already have two ethernet cords run from the patch panel to the server which is located on the same south side of the closet.

What I would like to do is put jacks on each side of that south wall. The existing ethernet cables would plug into the interior jacks, then I could have patch cables going out from the exterior side to the new server location.

So basically how would I terminate each side of the jack, simply terminate each side as T568B or do I need to do any type of cross-over?

    Wifi Router for NBN HFC

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 07:23 PM PST

Hi all, I am looking for some advice on getting a wifi router that will be compatible with Telstra nbn hfc to be used as an access point downstairs in my house. I am getting average speeds of 42.4mbps download and 4.45 upload speed on Ookla speedtest. I have been looking at the netgear xr500 to use with a powerline adapter to get better wifi speeds downstairs as it can get very slow and sometimes drop out on my phone.

    Thanks, Smithy.

home wiring for basement suite in 2 story house

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 07:19 PM PST

    Hi guys,

I'm currently looking to hire a contractor to wire ethernet in my uncle's basement suite. The house has two floors and the ISP's modem is located on the second floor of the home. He is currently renoing his basement suite to be used as a 3 bedroom rental for university students. As of now, the basement ceiling is mostly unfinished and all the basement bedrooms' inside-facing drywall are ripped out. I have a crude picture reference of what the floor layout looks like: https://imgur.com/a/GNe0fI2

I have the following requirements scoped out for him:

    • For each bedroom: 2 ethernet ports each. Also, another 2 lines pulled and hidden behind the drywall for future proofing if the bedrooms need more ports or if lines need to be pulled.

    • For the living room: 4 ethernet ports.

    • I want the possibility of wiring for an IP camera nearby the entrance to the basement suite.

    • Patch panel (24 port?) + a dumb switch to connect to ISP modem to manage/control the basement suite connections from the main floor.

    • Based off these requirements, that is 17 lines to be pulled.

    Questions.

    1. My uncle currently has a landline upstairs. Say he decides to ditch the rental idea down the road and wants family to move in instead and share the landline. Would they be able to use a landline with the ethernet wiring in the house to connect to the phone system/wiring?

    2. For IP cameras, is the wiring done directly to the patch panel/switch? Or does someone put a ethernet port wall outlet by where it might be installed and then you go happy go lucky with drilling? Installation videos I've watched seem to suggest the former, as all the wires are hidden.

    3. I thought about pulling coax in addition to ethernet, but it doesn't make sense logistically to do so to share cable feed upstairs with the tenants. I feel like I'm missing some logic here as I usually see outlets with both coax and ethernet.

I think I just want to know if there is anything else that I am missing here.

    Thank you

Just bought a home and I looking for help to set it up the RIGHT way

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 07:01 PM PST

Coming from my moms basement with drop ceilings so I just criss crossed that space with cat5 to meet my networking needs. Now I got a whole house I wanna wire up. Already have a appointment for Verizon to come out for fiber, it comes with the Wifi6 router for free. Since it's free I'll use it but I wanted more control of my networking for security then I think that's gonna offer me, not sure if I can do anything with it or not but for the first setup i'll use it. Anyways, line comes in in the basement, was gonna put my two home NASs with in down there and put the router on the first floor to help wifi coverage in the bed rooms. So I was gonna run a cable right from the fios fiber modem thing to the router on the first floor then from the router run a line back into the basement to feed the home NAS and into a switch. Then run wire to where I need from the switch to the other rooms. Does going through a switch slow my speeds? The things i'm most worried about getting a fast connection would be the two home NASs (probably gonna expand to 3 of them after the move) and my main desktop computer which will be in the living room. So should I run the computer and two NASs off the Wifi6 router then on the 4th line run it to a switch for the rest of the house or can I just run one line to the switch and plug everything into that? Also as far as wires go, this is a old house with plaster walls so running wire is gonna be a pain in the bird, I wanna run something that will meet fire code and will last so I was gonna use Cat6 that is riser rated, was looking at this cable https://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=301&cp_id=30103&cs_id=3010302&p_id=8102&seq=1&format=2 with these terminals https://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=303&cp_id=30307&cs_id=3030704&p_id=7266&seq=1&format=2 using this tool https://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=303&cp_id=30308&cs_id=3030824&p_id=195&seq=1&format=2. That should all work right? I also want to add some sort of hardware add block, I used a pihole in the past but I don't wanna slow up my connection with it, any recommendations for that? So, I also wanna run some cables that will go outside for PoE cameras, I got other questions with that but i'll take that to a CCTV subreddit but as far as exterior rated cable goes i'm lost. I figure since these pulls will always be for cameras I should pull cat5e for them, can anyone recommended me a bulk white cat5e that's outside rated? Can I use the same ends and crimper that I linked above for the Cat5e? Also lets say I ran a cable to my second floor and into a PoE switch to run a few cameras, will that work? Or does each camera need a direct unbroken connection to whatever camera solution I use? That might be a question for the CCTV sub though.

Another question about the router from Verizon, it's the Fios Home Router G3100, like I said it's included with my internet package so at first i'd like to use it. They also rent network extenders but i'd rather buy extenders outright, do I need that specific extender to use with the G3100 or do any other brands make a universal extender. In my moms house I had the router in the basement then pulled a network cable to the upstairs closet to run a second router to cover the upstairs with wifi. It worked okay but what would drive me crazy was my phone would never switch to the secondary wifi automatically even though the basement wifi was so weak you could hardly stream video. I'd much rather run a mesh network because on paper it sounds perfect for my issues but with this fancy wifi 6 router I'm not sure i'll even need that stuff especially since I'm gonna put the router on the first floor.

Also anyone have general tips and tricks for running wire in plaster walls i'm all ear. I helped my friend wire up his house when he moved but it was drywall on studs so even though we cut a lot of holes they were easy to patch. With plaster walls it's a pain. I'm also trying to keep everything to code so when we sell the house we won't have any issues. Think I should run coax with my networking cable? At least to the bed rooms? I'm gonna use Youtube TV so I don't need the coax cable but if the next owners go with cable having a coax hook up in the bed rooms would be nice, not sure how that industry is going though if new boxes even need coax.

Sorry for the rambling post but I got lot going through my mind right now for the home network. I'm still debating if I should get a patch panel and a rack mounted switch since I already have rack mount cases for my home NAS boxes. Also thinking if I should get a manged switch since at some point i'll want to setup a vlan for my IoT devices but i'm already way in over my head. It's so funny, my wife is picking out paint colors and towels and i'm looking at internet cables and in wall speakers!

Asus RT-58U vs Netgear Nighthawk AX4 RAX 40

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 06:59 PM PST

So I have an old Netgear N450 router and am looking to upgrade to a wifi 6 router that isn't too expensive. I currently have 3 devices that are able to use wifi 6 and have a small area in my house that I can just barely get a 5ghz signal with my current router (no external antennas or beam forming feature). The max speed of the router isn't super important, I'm more concerned with software quality/support/features and hardware quality. I personally like Asus' hardware, I've just never tried their network equipment.

Does anyone have experience or insight on either of these routers (Asus RT-58U AX1800 vs Nighthawk RAX40 AX3000)? I dont have that many devices total in my house and am just looking for a router with good features that has a stronger 5ghz signal that will last me a few years at least, and I'd love to try out my wifi 6 devices I have at the moment, and a little future proofing would be awesome.

Cable Modems w/ DOCSIS-PIE vs Routers w/ Active Queue Management & Quality of Service

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 06:52 PM PST

While reading about routers and firewalls with Active Queue Management features, I accidentally stumbled upon for the first time on the fact that all DOCSIS 3.1 and maybe even perhaps some DOCSIS 3.0 models already have built-in AQM algorithms.

Is DOCSIS-PIE as good or better than fq_codel or CAKE when it comes to mitigating bufferbloat, especially for latency sensitive applications such as online gaming? In other words, would you still need to use AQM on a router along with a DOCSIS 3.1 modem?

I've also read that because of this feature, DOCSIS 3.1 modems can seriously mess with routers that utilize their own AQM. Is this true?

Would someone who has the knowledge and a spare minute care to answer these questions? It would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Is this an outdated piece of equipment?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 05:45 AM PST

I recently purchased a new home and it's got a USTec cabinet in the laundry room where all the coax and networking cables are terminated to. Inside it is a mess of coax going to a splitter but avoiding this piece of equipment in question. The cable guy who setup our connection said it's no longer in use and out of date.

Need router recommendations- hosting a home server, home automation, and gaming

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 06:37 PM PST

So I just spent 2 weeks trying to set up a home sever for HomeAssistant, only to learn that my router (a netgear R7000) doesn't allow unsolicited inbound traffix, meaning I literally can't expose the server to the outside.

    So I'm going router shopping.

I need a router which supports gigabit internet. I also need one which will let me set up the home server so that it can receive inbound traffic. I also would prefer that devices which are not the home server be somewhat protected- the complicating factor here being that I want to use HomeAssistant (which needs to be able to see other devices on the network).

    Any suggestions?

HELP! i have a gigabyte plan but am not getting the speeds i need.

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 06:37 PM PST

I currently have fios gigabyte plan with tv i pay around $120. Though i am not getting close enough to 1000MB even when wired. I am getting about 200 to 400 average. Also my wifi is also the same it drops to like 100 to 300. Is there a way i can increase my speed and make my wifi stronger. I do have multiple devices connected. We have 8 phones, 4 consoles, 2 pcs, 2 laptops. I have the fios quantum gateway router which is also wired to a router (NETGEAR x10) with a different wifi access point. I feel like the netgear x10 would do a better job providing wifi, but its not what I expected I'm sure it can do a better job but i just don't think i have the right settings. Please help me out guys. I also just bought a ORBI i dont know if it will help but i will also use that to increase my wifi to my yard. Thanks guys.

Noob Question - Coaxial for cable?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 08:45 AM PST

So I have a coaxial port that was designated as my internet port for my modem by Spectrum.

I have another coaxial port upstairs where I'd preferably have my modem/router centrally located. Can I use either/or for internet?

I tried to disconnect my modem and upon reconnecting it to both it seems to not want to push internet to my router. I don't know if this is some kind of intentional security thing by Spectrum (lol) or if I potetionally broke my coaxial cable in the process.

Thanks in advance! Sorry if this is a blatantly obvious question. Searching "does Coaxial cable port for cable TV work for internet" does not obviously yield very usable results and I don't really know how to actually phrase it. My

Edit: is there anything practical I can do to make the coaxial port upstairs usable? I'm a renter so I unfortunately can't wire it myself otherwise I'd have just ran a CAT-5 cable upstairs.

    Hi,

I've always had very reliable internet, however the past two weeks my I have had latency spikes to 100+ in video games. I've played numerous games and they all receive the same latency spike. I still have good download speeds (300+ mbps), however the latency spikes are killing me. I've reset the modem and updated my network drivers, but the issue still persists. Any help is greatly appreciated!
