Google plans to remove SAW (system alert window) permission, ruining all apps that "draw over other apps"

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 12:39 AM PST

Google already ruined a lot of functionalities on Android over the past years, and some are planned to be, too (info here).

I don't like the fact that SAW permission, something that tons of apps use and make cool stuff - is also planned to be completely deprecated (articles here and here), killing almost all apps that use it. I remember that even Google itself admitted that a lot of apps made cool uses of this permission in one of its videos.

Why almost? Because they say they offer this (very restricted&limited) Bubble API, which works a bit like Facebook's chat-heads - a single floating (and annoying) circle that is shared for all those apps, to do something when clicked. This is mostly a solution for chatting apps, but not for most apps that use SAW permission.

Anyway, please consider starring this post on the issue tracker, optionally writing how it helps you to have this permission and how bad this decision to remove it will be.

Maybe if enough people show they are concerned about it, Google will offer something better than complete removal.

I think I've read somewhere that accessibility service could draw on top. I wonder if this decision will affect it too. I also wonder if it can be a full replacement. Sadly, I couldn't find any tutorial about it, and there are very few tutorials about accessibility service in general, and I think that accessibility service might use more CPU/RAM anyway, and it's quite annoying for the user to turn on/off compared to SAW.

Shopping list app for replenishing a standard list

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 09:33 AM PST

Is there a shopping list app where I can make a template list and then each week when I go shopping I can enter how much of each thing I need to buy?

    E.g. Template list: 6 potatos, 2 steaks, 3 carrots

Then when before I leave my house to go shopping I check my fridge and see that I have: 2 potatoes, 0 steaks, 3 carrots

I enter this into the app and then it would generate the following shopping list so that I'm fully stocked per the template list again : 4 potatoes, 2 steaks, 0 carrots

Does an app like this exist?

Latest Android update has broken the phone call recorder apps I use to record phone interviews. Any alternatives or fixes?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 09:14 AM PST

Turns out the latest Android update has stopped ACR and Call Recorder from working - each still creates an mp3 but no audio, just silence. I used these to record phone interviews (with speakerphone switched on, as it only records one side) so this is a major pain.

Thankfully, I've been using my tablet's voice recorder app as a backup, but can anyone recommend a decent alternative app, or way of making ACR or Call Recorder work?

Bonus qu: Why are Android so determined to defeat this incredibly useful, mostly harmless tool?

Alarm app that plays a sound just once

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 09:19 AM PST

    Hello,

I'm looking for an alarm app on Android that let's me play a sound just once (i.e. without repeating over and over).

The context is, I want an alarm that plays a message (that I have previously recorded) telling me that an interval has passed (e.g. "15 minutes have gone by"). I don't want it to repeat (e.g. "15 minutes have gone by ... 15 minutes have gone by ... 15 minutes have gone by), yet this is what the stock alarm app with Android Oreo seems to do.

    Any suggestions?

    Google Hangouts not sending notifications

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 08:11 AM PST

I'm wondering if there is any way to fix this. It seems to be similar to Gmail not sending notifications and it happens about every week and lasts for a few days. I know there is probably not a hangouts client, so is there anything else I can do?

    Any tips are appreciated, Thanks

App for tracking moods/progress/states/habits with a scale from 1 to 10 and generate stats

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 11:16 AM PST

    I would like to:

    • be able to track "something" from 1 to 10 every day. Let's say "tiredness": today 7, tomorrow 3, etc...
    • be able to add my own items that I would like to track, e.g.: "energy in the morning"
    • be able to see a line chart based on the values I logged before

In the winter, I tend to be kind of lazy, it's hard to wake up, etc... I would like to track this. Like a journal, but more complex, with items such as Gratefulness, Happiness, Wake-up early habit, Productivity, etc...

Like a habit tracker with a 1 to 10 scale.

Is there an app to use an adnroid phone as a graphic tablet on my PC? I was thinking it could be useful if I want to sign a file (e.g. a PDF document) without having to print it.

Is there a way to lock an app from closing or being switched from? I need to keep an app open at all times without the ability to open the app drawer or switching to another app.

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 10:49 AM PST

Not sure if correct flair, sorry.

I have an andoid app which I need to keep on at all times with one particular app open. The app cannot be closed out or switched away from. I want the user only allowed to use that one app. Is there an app that will accomplish this for me? Thank you.

[DEV] I made a simple meditation app

I have been learning flutter for a few days now and I started to develop this app about same time. I generally meditate using various sounds available on YouTube, I know there are some apps of the same genre available but well, I wanted to make it so I went ahead and made it. Also, hand drew the app logo so it was fun... Here is the link to the app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sarveshbhatnagar.muze&hl=en

    Is there a noise-detection app?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 09:34 PM PST

I'm looking for the audio equivalent of a motion detector app such as Alfred, which notifies you when you're not home and there is a lot of noise when, for example, the smoke alarm beeps. But Google seems to be of no help.

[DEV] Guitar Toolbox - A metronome, guitar tuner and chord library in one app - Now includes Dark mode!

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 02:57 PM PST

    Hey everyone!

Last Christmas I released my first app, a combination of the most important tools you need to practice guitar: a metronome, a guitar tuner and a chord library.

I just released the first update which introduces dark mode. I don't use it myself but I know it's a pretty popular request so I hope you'll enjoy it. Since I don't use it myself I welcome any comments you have about dark mode, good or bad.

You can try it on Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...toolbox.guitar

    Features:

    • Guitar tuner that provides lots of alternative tunings (including but limited to Drop D, Open tunings etc...)
    • Automatically detects which string is played, or select it manually if you prefer
    • Samples for every strings so you can tune by ear if you prefer
    • Metronome that can play in background and be controlled by a media notification
    • You can change how many beats are played, you can accent them however you want and use different subdivisions
    • Thousands of chord positions with fingerings are available in the library

    Features I'm currently working on:

    • Showing detailed information while tuning (precise cents difference, current frequency, that kind of things)
    • More options for beat division on the metronome
    • Show notes and intervals in chords instead of fingerings

A few words of warning: Working with the microphone (for the tuner) is tricky, especially on cheap chinese phones. I've done my best to make it work but I haven't been able to test it on hundreds of devices. If you encounter problems in that area I would greatly appreciate a word so I can look into it.

Also I'm in the EU, so you'll be greeted by a GDPR dialog. Rest assured that I don't plan on doing anything nefarious with your info, I just use Firebase (Analytics&Crashlytics) and Admob.

Feel free to comment, leave a review if you like it, and more importantly enjoy your time on your guitar!

Recommendations for unit converter apps with widget

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 07:25 AM PST

I am looking for unit converter app that would have a widget to allow 1-3 types of pre-set conversion directly from the widget.

I do not need advanced app (or at least it is not necessary), I do not need calculator - I already have that, but it is a bit annoying to load full app just to convert temperature between F and C, feet-inches to cm and back or lbs to kg and back (I use other units way lwss often, so I don't mind loading a full app for them)

    Seamless playback music player

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 10:00 PM PST

The only thing I miss about my Apple device is that iTunes has seamless playback, where one song leads into the next with no delay in between. Makes continuous albums like Deadmau5's Random Album Title that much better.

Google Play does not seem to have this feature, are there any Android audio players that have it? I am using a Google pixel 3 XL

    Application Not Valid

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 04:42 AM PST

I have been using an app that's been in development. And now, I guess either the dev has gotten really busy or abandoned the project. When I launch the app it gives a black screen saying the Application is not Valid and to download the latest version(which I'm on). Is there a way to disconnect the app from this check? I wish I could find another app that does everything that it does but they don't exist on the play store.

I've tried disconnecting it from the market using TB+ but that doesn't seem to do anything.

Pixel 3a chrome and Google apps aren't loading sites!

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 04:29 AM PST

Hi, for the past few weeks I haven't been able to use my phone for Google searches because the chrome app won't load any results, go to websites or load anything but settings and the Google app will search but won't load sites. I've tried disabling and reenabling as well as clearing caches and storage for both apps but it won't do anything. duckduckgo works but that's the only other one I've tried, I'd really appreciate some help guys :)

Any suggestion for hands-free news reading? R

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 04:28 AM PST

I'd like to optimize my time in car commute by listening to news.

I'd like to be able to control it with the voice, so that I can say it to skip to the next news, go back to list or something like that.

It would be nice if it would be a RSS feed reader but it's not a must-have.

Now I know that I could use screen reader to make Android read stuff for me, but:

    • I don't know if it's possible to drive screen reader using voice
    • I feel like screen reader might be a little bit to complex app compared to a dedicated app (if anything like that exists)

So any suggestions on that? Or maybe I'm wrong about the screen reader and it can be used just for that and there are some good articles explaining how to use screen reader for such case?
