cute laptop for university for ~$1000-$1500 aud?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 09:05 PM PST

Total budget and country of purchase: Around $1000-$1500 in Australia

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best value and good battery life are most important, but 2 in 1 would be nice (not essential though).

How important is weight and thinness to you? I'd like it to be thin, but I'd prefer it to feel a bit solid. Not too heavy though.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows please

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 inch or bigger. Preferably a little bigger to save my eyes.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Vocaloid and Studio 1/FL Studio simultaneously. LOTS of Google Chrome tabs open at the same time as OneNote and Endnote and Microsoft Word. Occasional video editing. I also do digital art with a drawing tablet, and it's super annoying when the brush strokes lag. Thus, I would like a laptop that's able to handle all these things. I currently have a MacBook Air Late 2015 model, and it is really starting to dislike all these programs (hope that helps as a reference).

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Minecraft and League of Legends. Pretty basic. I can survive with like 30FPS on normal settings, however more would be a little nice.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'd love reliable build quality and a glossy screen. Also good ppi.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. It's gotta look cute. If it's anything like that adorable pink Razer laptop, I'm sold (however I can't afford that one lmao). So yeah, streamlined build, no weird design decisions, you know the drill.

EDIT: because I'm a student, I get 40% off HP laptops, so I can afford the Envies and the Spectres and what have you (only the bottom of the range ones though)

Looking for a <600 € laptop that I can take to Uni

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 02:24 AM PST

Total budget and country of purchase: 600€ , Germany

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery Life

How important is weight and thinness to you? thin & light is definetly preferred, but battery life is more important

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I want to program a bit in C++ and Python and I want to play some games. No photo/video editing

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? strategy games, offline, mostly turn based, so FPS aren't that important.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? good keyboard would be nice. Touchpad/finger print reader is irrelevant for me.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I will use the laptop to play "simple" games (no online shooters, mostly offline turn based strategy games), watch youtube videos, write stuff in word, excel, powerpoint & LaTeX, program in C++ and python, check mails & do online banking. I also want to take it to Uni so ideally it's small & light with a long battery life. Thanks for your help

**Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.*\* Good battery life. Don't care about technical specifications outside achieving fast performance for simple applications like browsers, Microsoft word, and PDFs. I want my money to go towards build quality, screen, and keyboard.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?*\* Moderately important but not vital.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.*\* Prefer MacOS but can use Windows if specifications are good enough to achieve smooth performance. In the past I've found windows laptops to be rather slow regardless of specifications but I understand that things change an am open minded. I have used Linux in the past but disliked having no native Microsoft Word.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.*\* No. I just need good, snappy performance for Word, PDFs (multiple PDF tabs open, generally), and browsing (with multiple tabs).

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?*\* N/A. I have a desktop PC.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?*\* Need a good keyboard, high quality screen that is easy on the eyes, and a reliable build quality that will last me 3 years without issues. Preferably also adequate ports for an external display and keyboard occasionally.

$400Aud/300Usd. Recommend Cheap and cheerful laptop - great battery life - 14" size

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 10:09 PM PST

    Just not a Chromebook.

Needs to have the option to replace the battery when it starts dying. I can accept 4gb ram minimum as long as I can upgrade it in future (or immediately). Would be nice to at least 7 hours out of it and any above 9 is better.

I'd like the option to take it here and there so weight should be less then 2kgs.

    Thanks!

    Casual-moderate gaming/video editing laptop (under ₱65,000/₱75,000, Philippines)

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 06:15 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Under ₱65,000 or ₱75,000, Philippines (Metro Manila).
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money (as a priority) and battery life.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? As long as it does not sacrifice thermals.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I would prefer a 13" or 14", but since most of the 13" or 14" laptops are not powerful for gaming/video editing and they are only capable for light gaming/video editing (laptops with MX250 or Ryzen's integrated Vega 8/10 graphics or even a GTX 1050 or a 1650), I would stick to a 15.6" laptop instead.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Alongside basic/productivity tasks (I would usually use it for browsing the web, watching YouTube or Netflix and listening to Spotify), I would casually use it for the following applications: After Effects (plus Cinema 4D Lite), Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Ai Gigapixel, AviSynth, and Vegas Pro.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I would like to do some casual-moderate gaming at medium or high settings at 1080p (minimum FPS of 30, though I would appreciate it if it's 60fps). The games that I want to on this laptop play are CS:GO, PUBG and Fortnite, as well as Forza Horizon 4 and GTA V. I might also want to do some light PS3, 3DS and Wii U emulation as well.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? For a laptop that I want to buy, it needs to have an Intel Core i7 (or an AMD Ryzen 7) processor, a good display (since I am going to do some casual video editing and Photoshop), decent-good thermals (since the laptop that I am going to buy is an i7 or a Ryzen 7), a decent-good keyboard/touchpad (since I'm already used to the keyboard/touchpad of my 13" non-Retina MacBook Pro from mid-2012), a decent-good build quality, and at least 8GB of RAM and a SSD (minimum of 256GB).
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm going to be a Senior High School student this year :).

Something in between a Razed Blade 15” & MacBook Air 13” (for college, with light gaming capabilities)

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 09:54 PM PST

I've used the Razer Blade 15" for a few days now, and love the 144hz display and how much "power" it has, but it's too bulky and large for what I need. Before that I had a 13" MacBook Air, which was amazing but underpowered. I pretty much only play CS:GO - so I don't need the best stuff, perhaps just a level up from the MacBook Air.

In short, need something light weight (13"-14" screen size), decent processing power, in a sleek body, preferably aluminum.

    • Total Budget & Country of purchase: $1,500, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 factor, good battery life, or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that imply: Good battery life and specs would be nice. I hate 2 in 1 laptops, so I'd prefer not to have one of those.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Extremely important.

    • Which OS do you prefer? Either Mac OS or windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? Yes, 13"-14", maybe even a 15" if it's in an extremely small body.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/ gaming: Just CS:GO

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you'd like to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? CS:GO on low settings @ 1080p at at least 60fps.

    • Any specific requirements? Sleek design, good keyboard (I love my MacBook Air key board).

I need a laptop around $200-300 that meets these specs.

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 02:17 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $250 +/- some change, USA. Used and refurbished are fine

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. No 2 in 1. Best specs for the money is important. A semi-decent processor and 8/16 gigs of RAM is important. Do not care about battery life because it will be plugged in 99% of the time

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important. All that matters is that it's somewhat sturdy.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 7. I can tolerate the later Windows but 7 is extremely preferred.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Nothing tiny, nothing huge. Something in the middle

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I need a computer to record music demos on, to run Sibelius 7, REAPER, GuitarPro, various VST's simultaneously and the occasional, rare game.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Skyrim/emulators, lowest settings. Don't really care about gaming.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Decent touchpad, decent keyboard and the most USB ports possible. Decently sturdy. Will never use a touchscreen or optical drive so don't care.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Only getting a new laptop because my HP Elitebook 8460p's charger port broke and the repair is more than I paid for the laptop. I loved the computer until it broke, served 5 good years to me. Looking for a slight upgrade with the new one.

    Laptop for my sister's birthday - £600 - UK

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 09:46 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: £600 - UK

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Just the best we can get within range

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important as will only be used at home

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Current is 15.6. No smaller than that.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Only light games e.g. older stuff like Portal 2 etc and crappy puzzle games

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? As above

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good build quality and keyboard

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My sister's current laptop is absolutely falling to pieces. She uses it mainly on her bed for watching videos, surfing the web, and playing rubbishy internet puzzle games and some older stuff like Portal 2, Grim Fandango etc. My mum and I have decided to team up to buy her a new one for her birthday, which leaves me the job of finding it. I'm a lot more comfortable with putting together PCs for myself than I am with trying to find a prebuilt laptop where I can't pick and choose components so any help would be appreciated.
