USA, $2000 budget, but less would be better. Not really trying to spend a whole $2000 on a laptop.
Good battery life is key.
Small weight and thinness is the second most important thing to me, the first being battery life.
Windows
N/A
I will be gaming on it 4 months out of the year on deployments. I play games such as League of Legends, FFXIV Online (MMO), Destiny 2, and Minecraft. Though throughout the rest of the year, I will be carrying it around using Discord, writing Word Documents, and having 3-5 tabs of Google Chrome up all while not being plugged in and carrying it with me everywhere I go, and that is why battery life and thinness is key.
See last question for list of games. Since battery life and thinness is key, I just want to be able to play the games at 60 FPS on the lowest settings if possible. The laptop will be plugged in during gaming. I would like to be able to play for 4-5 hours without it overheating as well. [link] [comments] |

Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Chrome OS will be enough * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** somewhere between 13" and 15" would be preferred * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** none * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? Laptops for running software such as MATLAB, Eclipse, etc Posted: 03 Jan 2020 10:35 PM PST As the title suggests I am looking for something that can handle running such software and can be reliably used for the next 3 to 4 years. The thing is that, I don't want something as bulky as the gaming laptops. I also am in budget (Rs.60000-Rs.75,000 (around $850-$1050)) which makes me hesitant to buy something like a MacBook. I could stretch my budget a bit more but I want to do that only if it is worth it. For example, a dell XPS or a MacBook is way out of my budget (here in my country) but if I could somehow go through the pain of getting it, I don't want it to break down and then have me running around to get it fixed. I want something light weight that I can trust to not die. I was also considering getting a 2 in 1 since the tablet mode would be really useful for me but it seems like that most of them cannot handle running such heavy programs. So far I can afford Dell Inspirons and Asus Zenbooks but I am unsure if they would meet my needs. I am not sure about the HP Pavillions or the Lenovo Yogas. Lenovo Thinkbooks seem powerful but very heavy and not suitable for travel. I need advice about which model of laptop to buy of which brand. And if there is any 2 in 1 that can handle running such programs Please help! [link] [comments] |
2k€ 15" UHD laptop for work (machine learning) and play (Destiny 2, Fortnite) in Europe Posted: 04 Jan 2020 04:16 AM PST Hello everyone, my 2014 Macbook Pro is reaching the end of its life. New Macbook Pro's look terrible: most of my colleagues had keyboard problems, the new 16" is outrageously priced... so I'm looking for other options. I heard good things about the Dell XPS 15, which is currently my first choice. However after trying it out I am not fully convinced with the keyboard which felt a bit like a toy (rubbery feeling). In the past, I had a Lenovo T410s, and I loved that keyboard. Unfortunately the Lenovo website is so messy I was unable to figure out if any of their laptops would fit me :-/ Here are my requirements:
Europe (France but I can order around, incl Switzerland), ~2000€ Could go as high as 2200€ if there's a really good offer.
Best spec, I don't care about 2 in 1, or battery life, or touch screen.
It should look professional enough to use at work: no weird gamer shape, logo, or RGB I can't turn off! I carry it all day so it shouldn't be too heavy.
Windows, Linux (Ubuntu)
15" to 15.6". It should be UHD: after years using a 2880 x 1800 15.4" display I can't go back!
Machine learning, so it needs an NVIDIA GPU. Doesn't need to be bleeding-edge, as any long task will be run in a cluster, but having a local GPU helps quickly try things out. More specifically, I do reinforcement learning, which really profits from many fast cores. Something like a i9-9980HK would be great.
Popular multiplayer games such as Destiny 2, Fortnite, Unreal Tournaments... I don't care about super high quality of FPS, just being able to run these things comfortably at the occasional LAN party. [link] [comments] |
Travel quite a bit for work, looking for a powerful gaming laptop that is is durable and portable Posted: 03 Jan 2020 05:34 PM PST Total budget and country of purchase: USA $2200 Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? I love games like Skyrim, Witcher 3, RDR2, Planet Coaster, looking forward to cyberpunk If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Would like to play at highest settings possible Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Bigger keyboard, reliable Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am very new to PC gaming, my old laptop could hardly play anything. I prefer something that is less "flashy" so I can still use for work (no rainbow LED and crazy designs). Looking for something durable, thin, powerful. Thank you all for your help [link] [comments] |
Help me make my purchase decision Posted: 04 Jan 2020 02:34 AM PST Hey r/SuggestALaptop, here in my country Lenovo is having a back to school promotion and I thought I will pick up a new laptop. I've been eyeing two similar models for comparison but I myself is more leaning towards the intel. Here are the two models with the price converted from my local currency to USD. I use it mainly for Excel, Google Analytics, taking it with me onto the plane(hence the 14" and lightweight model) and sometimes light gaming like Dota 2, Overwatch etc. Yoga S740-14IIL CPU: Intel core i5-1035G1 RAM: 8GB LPDDR4X 3733MHz Soldered SSD: 1TB M.2 2280 PCIE-NVME TLC Display: 14" 1080p IPS 400nits GPU: MX250 GDDR5 2GB Price: USD888 (down from USD999) Thinkpad T495 CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 3500U RAM: 8GB DDR4 2666MHz Onboard SSD: 1TB M.2 2280 NVME TLC Display: 14" 1080p IPS 250nits GPU: AMD Radeon Vega 8 Price: USD850 (down from USD1400) What's your thoughts? Posted: 03 Jan 2020 09:54 PM PST Total budget and country of purchase: US, ~$1600 USD Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I'd like a 2 in 1 with good battery life How important is weight and thinness to you? Slimmer and lighter is great, but I'm not terribly worried about this. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Nothing graphics intensive; I would be using this for statistical software, though, so I want a good CPU. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I want to get something with Iris Plus Graphics or better, but I'm not too concerned about gaming on this laptop. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality is my absolute biggest priority. Given that I still have a while before finishing school and may also need this for my internship, I'm going to need this to last me as long as possible. I will also be doing a fair bit of typing, so I want a decent keyboard (e.g., I can't do a Razer Stealth because of its horrendous right shift placement). Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've been looking at this for a while now and have been torn between the Dell XPS 13 2in1 7390 and the HP Spectre x360 13T (Ice Lake refresh), though I'm open to suggestions. I was able to try the Dell at a nearby Microcenter and, while it wasn't my favorite keyboard the world, I truly did not mind the maglev keyboard, and even liked it more than most of the laptops they had on display. I'm thinking 2 in 1 because most of my school work involves reading PDFs of journal articles, and being able to mark them up in tablet mode would be nice. I think the Spectre would be perfect for me if it had a 16:10 screen like Dell's offering but, since it doesn't, I figured I'd ask here to see if anyone had experience with these computers or other recommendations to check out. Bought a laptop that had 12gb of ram instead of 16gb of ram. How much of a difference is that? Posted: 03 Jan 2020 10:39 PM PST So long story short my laptop of 5 years finally passed away as the CPU fried itself while it was in sleep mode. I had two days until school started and I had to get a new laptop ASAP. I went to Best Buy because I had gift cards for there and I bought the Lenovo Yoga C940. My previous laptop had 4GB of RAM so I knew that wasn't great and I wanted more. I was deciding between this computer and another one that I couldn't remember and I decided to go with this one because it was a 14 inch screen rather than a 13 and I liked the design more. However, I was sacrificing 4GB of ram. So I'm just wondering if that 4GB less is really a game changer. I don't play high intense games on it. The only one I really play is League of Legends and I played a game of it tonight and the fan turned on a couple times to cool down my CPU. I always get scared when the fan comes on now because I'm so afraid of having another computer fry itself. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Jan 2020 03:14 PM PST Hey guys. I have been in the Apple ecosystem for as long as I can remember. I have recently wanted to move out of this ecosystem. I have like around 1000 USD to spend on the laptop. I need the laptop for web browsing, school work, and some light gaming along with the typical Adobe apps etc. I would like a very good display, 512 GB SSD and 8 or 16 GB of RAM in this budget (the laptop itself, its charger(s) etc.). Please recommend a laptop to me. Hopefully, it will last for atleast 3-4 years. I do not want a refurbished or second hand or open box laptop. I was initially looking into the surface lineup (was not really into the Surface laptops but had a keen eye on the Surface Pro's). While the Pro was not by itself very expensive in my opinion, the essential accessories like the Type Cover, Stylus, and the mouse (not to forget the dongle I will have to carry with me everywhere because of there being no USB-A port). £1000 laptop for pure productivity (Online Teaching and Writing) nomadic life? Posted: 03 Jan 2020 04:59 PM PST Hi there! I'm UK. Thanks in advance for your help. Need to make this decision in a few days. I teach and write online and am moving from long-time desktop boy to a laptop boy. I want a device that's superb for writing and reading and office work, and crucially for teaching online. I want to have a laptop whose basic guts (camera, microphones, wi-fi connectivity) are buisness class as I'm effectively conference calling 6 hours a day and do not want to drag around extra equipment. I'd really like to have it happily churn out a game of starcraft now and again if possible, but ultimately this is a livelihood machine. I think it needs a touchscreen, as the possibilities for online teaching seem very useful (unless anyone with experience says otherwise). Since I plan to love somewhere sunny, I worry too about anti-glare but not sure if this is a minor issue. Finally, and crucially, I'm a clumsy guy. I'll treat this thing like a baby but it needs to not die on minor impact as I'll be slinging it to cafes in my freetime and travelling a lot. As you might have guessed, I've researched a fair bit, but I'm not savvy and haven't used a laptop for 6/7 years. I have so far come up with the Surface Laptop 3 (I pay 178 premium over my budget which hurts but not a penny more) and the Lenovo Thinkpad T490. Surface good because of the 3:2 aspect ratio which seems perfect for webwriters? Any other machines have this? Lenovo good cos durable as hell and keyboard. The drag on the lenovo is the lack of touch and the drag on the surface is the premium cost and reports of unusable screens in high glare. I've flirted with the surface 7 but have never used tablets and barely use my phone so unsure It'll work for me. Do any other laptops have the 3:2? Is IPS better?... etc. Any kind and laptop literate souls who might have similarish experiences wanna weigh in and help me, maybe there is a stellar option I'm overlooking. I'm clearly willing to go to 1178 for something perfect but not sure SL3 is it and would be so much happier at £700-1000. Thank you all in advance for any help! [link] [comments] |
Laptop for light gaming and travelling Posted: 03 Jan 2020 08:37 PM PST I'm in Cambodia so options are limited to this site only https://www.chantracomputer.com/. I like a laptop under $400.
