OEM Laptop partition and Linux installation Posted: 01 Jan 2020 07:24 AM PST Hey, I wanna resurrect my old windows 8 laptop and learn some Linux by installing Manjaro on it. Thing is, I don't want to format the whole drive with OEM partition and I also have concerns about NTFS file system and windows bootloader messing with Manjaro bootloader and Linux's file system. How do I get this to work without breaking OEM partition in case I need my windows key sometime later? Thanks in advance for your help. edit: for now decided to go with dual boot, I'll post screenshots after the install :D submitted by /u/Dominiczkie [link] [comments] |

However, I just can't format this one drive, I formatted it on my windows machine ready to transfer files to my new one. It worked fine, I managed to transfer the files, but I went to reformat it to use as a backup drive and since then It's been nothing but trouble. Should you always make a non-root user? Posted: 01 Jan 2020 12:10 AM PST I have a small server that I use to host Plex, Nextcloud, a few game servers, and a web server. Now that I've created a few vms and containers (all Unix), I'm wondering if using solely root is the wrong way to administer my servers. Would it be better to create a non-root administrator? submitted by /u/CRasputin [link] [comments] |
Linux and Rust Posted: 01 Jan 2020 02:57 AM PST So ive been thinking of switching to linux for my main os and while people argue to just stay in windows but i really love the tinkering and optimization of linux, though the first game i thought would be good to try is rust and for the life of me using valve's proton, lutris and playonlinux i have the same result of the game crashing when i load the server list. another game i tried was dead by daylight but that has a different issue on its own with easy anti cheat. Is there something i can do to help any of these? submitted by /u/darkchillz [link] [comments] |

Linux installer doesn't detect my SSD Posted: 01 Jan 2020 05:47 AM PST I've recently gotten a new laptop with free DOS and have created a bootable USB with Ubuntu 18.04.3. I can access the live session without trouble, but whenever I try installing the OS the installer doesn't detect my SSD and returns a storage space error. Keeping a session running after closing SSH connection Posted: 31 Dec 2019 03:49 PM PST I have what I believe is probably a simple question for most people. However, I cannot find much on the internet about it. I have a desktop computer and a server. The server is running Ubuntu server with rtorrent and the desktop runs Linux Mint (and when I say server I just mean an old PC I have). I can SSH into the server from my desktop and startup rtorrent and everything works fine. However if I close the terminal the session ends on the server and rtorrent closes. What I would like is an always running session with rtorrent running and to be able to connect to it from time to time to add/remove torrents etc. Is that possible? Of so how would I do it? submitted by /u/asyu7 [link] [comments] |

Tried to install KDE on Pop OS and idk what happened but it didn't work. Any help? Posted: 31 Dec 2019 02:40 PM PST So I just started using Linux (Pop OS) and I'm feeling way too lost. A lot of it is because of the UI, so I decided to try KDE. I tried following the instructions from the official website but it didn't work out (https://support.system76.com/articles/desktop-environment/). The website shows how to install 3 versions of KDE, Minimal, Standard, and Full. I went with the Full one since I'm not sure what the difference is. So I did "sudo apt install kde-full". I then waited for something to get to 100% and was shown an error. I think it meant that I could only have one desktop environment and was asking me to choose between 2 things: 1-"SDDM" or 2-something with "GN" on it . I picked SDDM since GN sounds like gnome, the original environment from pop os that I dislike. After that it loaded again. It finished and the only thing that changed is that I have a lot more apps installed now. Why didn't KDE work? Can I revert everything I did? And what did I even do? All I can really see are the new apps I installed. submitted by /u/Dalmnolk [link] [comments] |
Boot order question/GRUB menu only showing up on one of three OSes Posted: 31 Dec 2019 02:25 PM PST I have Windows 10 installed to my Samsung SSD 960 Evo 1 TB. I have Ubuntu and CentOS installed to Samsung SSD 860 Evo 500 GB. These are two separate hard drives. I f I go to my boot menu and select the AHCI Samsung SSD 860 Evo, it boots to Windows 10. If I boot to Ubuntu, it boots right into Ubuntu. If I boot to CentOS Linux, then it boots to the GRUB menu when I select CentOS or Ubuntu. If there any way to make one GRUB menu for all three OSes? submitted by /u/TopdeckTom [link] [comments] |
Help partitioning usb memory Posted: 31 Dec 2019 05:15 PM PST I just downloaded linux, tails for the first time onto a usb. Need clarification on Luks file container/encryption Posted: 31 Dec 2019 03:52 PM PST I'm trying to familiarise myself with the luks encryption system. I have a few questions regarding cryptsetup: Is it possible to open veracrypt file containers using cryptsetup? (I've tried searching for a way to do this but can't find anything specific except vague posts alluding to it being possible???) if it is possible how would I go about doing this. I can successfully create a encrypted container using cryptsetup and the dd command. I created a test container of 100mb, the information I got in the terminal when use the file command I receive 'LUKS encrypted file, ver 2 [, , sha256] UUID ' I'm curious about the information in the brackets because in the tutorials I've followed it specifically mentions aes etc yet on mine that info is missing. Is there a way to choose which encryption cypher to use e.g twofish, aes etc.? if there are newbie friendly guides that anyone can point me to it would be highly appreciated. I am currently using debian buster as the os. Thanks submitted by /u/NecessaryCarpet7 [link] [comments] |
