Laptop with a "premium" feel that isn't a macbook? Posted: 01 Jan 2020 05:07 PM PST I like the elegant design and portability of Apple's laptops, but I'm not a big fan of their OS (or the company in general), so I was just wondering if there are any Windows machines that are similar in design and specs to a Macbook? Would I just be better off buying a Macbook and use boot camp to run Windows on it? My budget is around 1000 €, but cheaper is always better. I will mostly use it for schoolwork, and I will carry it around all day so battery life and portability is very important. Thankful for any answers! [link] [comments] |
Good Thin and Light laptop for work. Gaming also a plus Posted: 02 Jan 2020 03:06 AM PST Hello, I am looking for a thin and light weight laptop. I've had a macbook 2012 for 8 years now and although it's been great, reliability wise, I feel like it's time for me to upgrade. Wouldn't mind moving to a windows software either. I like changing every now and then
Thanks for reading and would appreciate any recommendations! [link] [comments] |
Reliable notebook for everyday use under 1k Posted: 02 Jan 2020 03:26 AM PST Hello, I am looking for relatively lightweight and reliable notebook for my sister. She lives around Luxembourg/Germany area.
Thanks for reading and would appreciate any recommendations! [link] [comments] |
Any laptops still have a clickpad? Posted: 01 Jan 2020 11:32 PM PST Looking for a new laptop that includes a trackpad where the full surface is physically clickable ("clickpad", at least in Thinkpad terminology). I think Macbooks have something like this (never used one, maybe it's just haptic feedback?), but I'm looking for a PC/linux based laptop, and don't see it on any of the major product lines. I've been using a Thinkpad T431s for many years and grew to love its clickpad, so that gives you an idea what I'm looking for. Most people hated the clickpad (driver support was admittedly bad initially), and so it was quickly removed from the Thinkpad line. I actually just bought a T480s to replace it but I'm really missing the click-and-drag ease of my old clickpad and considering returning it for another laptop. [link] [comments] |
Laptop for Processing X-ray Crystallography Data Posted: 02 Jan 2020 02:11 AM PST Curious to see if anyone on here does protein X-ray crystallography and could suggest a computer that runs programs like Phenix and Coot well. I like PCs better and would enjoy good battery life as well. I currently have a just over one year old Dell Inspiron 13 7373 2-in-1 and the battery crapped out (luckily it was under warranty for like 5 more days when this happened, so I got it replaced by dell). I fear that it might happen again. The computer runs really hot and a way I found that makes it run cooler is to reduce the max processor state which is obviously detrimental to running programs. Makes me want to avoid Dells from here on out. Anyone have any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Lightweight laptop for travelling with good display and ports Posted: 02 Jan 2020 01:43 AM PST I live in Germany. There is a good deal: https://www.notebooksbilliger.de/notebooks/asus+zenbook+13+ux333fa+a3253+622697 Asus ZenBook 13 UX333FA-A3253 / 13,3" Full-HD NanoEdge / Intel i5-8265U / 8GB RAM / 512GB SSD / ohne Windows for 666 € It's the no-OS version, which is no problem because I already have Windows 10. I'm searching for a laptop with this specs: - thin and lightweight, 11-13 inch, just for travelling, I already have a PC at home - for editing photos and videos made with my smartphone and Sony A7 III camera, a good processor is not necesarry because I do the main edits on my home pc, the laptop is mainly for saving and organizing the media - good color accuracy, I have a calibration device at home if necesarry - at least three usb ports (usb-a or c does not matter) and a sd or micro sd port - max. 800 € What do you think about the offer above or do you have other suggestions for my purposes? Cheapest 15-inch college laptop for browsing and longevity ($700) Posted: 01 Jan 2020 01:10 PM PST Would prefer cheapest possible, but $700 is the limit. In order of importance (glossy screen as most important): - Glossy screen (LED or similar, like on a Mac air) that is good for reading PDF text. - Good trackpad - Good battery life - Quiet for classroom setting - Last a long time, sturdy, light would be nice but good as long as not heavy Thanks! Looking for a Dell XPS Ultrabook Replacement Posted: 02 Jan 2020 12:18 AM PST I recently bought myself a Dell XPS 13 2 in 1 (7390) from a great Black Friday deal from Costco (16gb of ram, 512gb ssd and a 10th gen i7 for roughly about $1300). I've slowly grown to hate the keyboard and the coil whine is slowly chipping away at my soul. Thankfully Costco has a great return policy and I was wondering if there was a better alternative. -Generally I'm looking for something that is light and thin, under 4 pounds if possible -Something that's generally quiet and won't burn my hand -Display size needs to be under 15.6 with either a 9th gen or 10th gen CPU -Needs to be at least 16gb of ram and over a 256 ssd (I'll settle with less if the laptop is upgradable) -A decent GPU for light gaming (Games like Halo Reach) and adobe programs, the new 10th gen IRIS graphics are able to put out a decent amount of horsepower Ultimately all this needs to be around $1300 (sale tax is another +$100) and LITTLE TO NO COIL WHINE. Also I'm a part of a program that allows me to get discounts on HP, Dell, Lenovo and Samsung products (Where I can get an X1 Extreme Gen 2 that costs $1800 for around $1330-ish) but they vary so the newer the laptop the most probable chance the discount applies, just don't go crazy. I was looking at X1 Gen 2 but I wanted to get a second opinion from here. [link] [comments] |
Suggest a laptop for a university student Posted: 02 Jan 2020 12:17 AM PST Hello, I'm a student currently doing my degree. I already have a high end machine for gaming and editing, but it's too inconvenient most of the times to take it with me wherever I go. What I'm looking for is a a cheap laptop in the range of $200-$600 with a decent performance and battery life. Most preferably something that can run Photoshop, Lightroom and Illustrator well, last more than 6-8 hours and have the 2 in 1 form factor. QnA Total budget and country of purchase: $200-$600 Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 form factor How important is weight and thinness to you? A good weight that allows me to carry around and put it in my backpack Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux? Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Yes. Photoshop, Lightroom and Illustrator. Not really heavy editing, I do most of that on my other device If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Gaming is not really important for me on this device, but of it can run indie games on a good fps, it works Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touchscreen with a stylus is something I'm looking for very much Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Thank you for all the future replies! I hope I get a good recommendation. [link] [comments] |
A laptop which can do the following work without any lagging? Posted: 01 Jan 2020 10:47 PM PST
Is a MacBook 15 or 16 good for this? If not can I know some other good laptops to do the above work? [link] [comments] |
Doctor of physical therapy student in need of a good laptop or tablet for school. Posted: 01 Jan 2020 10:47 PM PST * **Total budget and country of purchase:** USA $1000 * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Good battery life, looks sleek/cool like a macbook pro (this is prideful but I would like something recent), touch or keyboard or both, need alot of storage space for school * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Similar to macbook pro. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows and mac as minimum requirement * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** At least 10 inches * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Only for school and streaming services, microsoft office, anatomy apps * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** N/A Currently have a macbook pro 2016 with a failing battery. Due to some mysterious water damage and the design of the macbook, Apple quoted me $755 to fix. I would rather sell it and try something new then give them that much money to fix a 3 year old laptop. I put $1000 as a budget just because I had to pick a number - this is open to change but it has to be really worth it and of course, if it's cheaper that's great. I appreciate any help. January 2020 update for my list of gaming laptop recommendations Posted: 01 Jan 2020 05:32 PM PST Hi everyone, Over on the /r/LaptopDeals subreddit, I have been posting my recommendation lists for general use and gaming devices. I thought it would also be useful for users on here. Here is a link to my list of gaming laptops updated for January 2020. Here is a link to my list of general use laptops updated for November 2019. If you have any feedback or questions for me, please let me know, I will get back to every user ASAP! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jan 2020 09:09 PM PST I'm happy to hear specific suggestions, but I was thinking in terms of brands or lines, etc. But for the record: general purpose, low requirements but low budget. No gaming, no video editing, any form factor, weight is not important, no need for touchscreen or fingerprint reader or anything fancy. Larger screen would be nice, and I'm used to Windows. EDIT for doing it right:

Need Help Picking A General-Purpose Laptop Posted: 01 Jan 2020 05:11 PM PST I've been researching laptops to decide what to get, but I don't know enough to pick a good one. I picked one last week but missed the sale, so it went up $200. I have a budget of about $500. I don't need it for gaming. Here are some that I'm looking at:
I'm open to suggestions other than the ones I listed. I appreciate any of you who are willing to help, I'm just overwhelmed with all the options. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jan 2020 08:33 PM PST Hello, I'll be living abroad for a little bit and I need a laptop to handle not just all of my work (namely massive Excel files) but also to do some gaming on. Yesterday I purchased the ASUS ROG Strix Scar II (GL504GW-DS74) because it was on sale for $1399 and I felt like it checked pretty much all of the boxes. However after doing additional searching I found the MSI GP Series GP65 Leopard 9SF-240 was on sale for $1350 (post rebate). The biggest differences I could see between the two specs wise are:
The MSI seems to have the better specs and is actually $50 cheaper. But I've owned neither brand before and obviously can't test them out, just have heard good stuff about ASUS ROG but also excellent reviews on MSI. I have no clue on which would have better cooling, build quality, battery life, and overall reliability & support. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I'm still within the window to cancel the ASUS, and as of now the MSI is still discounted. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
<$600 for a CS student (light gaming, movies, seldom art) Posted: 01 Jan 2020 02:33 PM PST Edit: willing to up it to $700 and below Hey, I'm a CS student from the Philippines looking for a lightweight and long-term laptop that I will mainly use for coding and movies/YouTube. Occasional TFT and Minecraft. Seldom art-related stuff. I already have a pen tab so no stylus needed, unless you'd like to suggest a 2 in 1 laptop. Thanks! Note: This laptop is part of a cheap laptop/gaming desktop route; it's something I need on-the-go. I will use it heavily, but for gaming I might rely on the desktop more.

Most similar laptop to a Surface Book 2? Posted: 01 Jan 2020 08:01 PM PST My surface pro 4 got stolen out of my car last weekend along with other valuables and though I am very bummed out about it I figure I see the good and see it as a valid excuse to indulge myself in a better overall experience. I really love the Microsoft laptops but I haven't really tried anything else and quick research all points that I could pay a lot less for better specs from a brand other than Microsoft. I'm willing to go up to $2k (USA). The most intensive thing I will likely do is work with extremely large excel files doing pivots and some long macros. To be Frank I don't really know how much processing power this requires but my work PC has an AMD Ryzen 7 and it handles that without the slightest issue. Only things I can think of that are musts: \n* Be able to handle a portable extra monitor like the Asus Zenbook (which also got stolen so if you have better recommendations please let me know). \n* Not for gaming so I would prefer it look like a regular laptop and not a gaming one. \n* At least 15" but the larger the better. Some things I prefer but not deal breakers. \n* Be compatible with a stylus (like the surface) \n* 2 in 1 \n* At least 4k res Thank you all for taking the time to read through this I really appreciate it! Which laptop out of the following Posted: 01 Jan 2020 07:50 PM PST So, I'm looking to get a new "thinish and lightish" gaming laptop, I don't mind buying refurbished from trusted sellers as most offer 2 year warranty. My budget can stretch to just over £1,000 for a good spec machine I've found the following options
I7 9750h | GTX 1660ti | 8gb ram | 144hz screen | £800 Dell g7 7590 I7 9750h | RTX 2060 | 16gb ram | 144hz screen | £940 Alienware m17r2 I7 9750h | Rtx 2060 | 16gb ram | 144hz screen | £1200 Alienware m15r2 I7 9750h | 1660ti | 16gb ram | 144hz screen | £1300 acer predator helios 300 I7 9750h | 1660ti | 16gb ram | 144hz screen | £1000 Out of all these, which one would you recommend, or even any others. Many thanks [link] [comments] |
Most affordable laptop that meets these requirements Posted: 01 Jan 2020 07:48 PM PST Hi all! I am computer-challenged and have spent the last several hours trying to find a laptop that meets specific system requirements. Essentially, my laptop is a hunk of junk and I'm not able to play a game I really want to play on it. I've got a few dollars, so I thought I'd upgrade — essentially, this laptop will just be used for some light gaming (like... The Sims, Planet Zoo, Age of Empires level stuff here) and web browsing. It needs to meet these requirements... CPU: Intel i5-2500 / AMD FX-6350 CPU Speed: Info ram: 8 GB os: Windows 7 (SP1+)/8.1/10 64bit Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 (2GB) / AMD Radeon R9 270X (2GB) Pixel Shader: 5.0 Vertex Shader: 5.0 Free Disk Space: 16 GB Dedicated Video RAM: 2048 MB I think I've found a few that (maybe???????? I have no idea what any of this stuff means) meet my needs here. Posting to see if you guys would be willing to take a look and see if it's what I need, or potentially point me in a better direction. I'd prefer not to spend more than $400, but my budget is flexible. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07XXRJ49K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_3DwdEb1M4BMMF https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V5YDCLQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_QEwdEb6NDKEDX https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07YP1V1W8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_kFwdEbRJ04X26 Thank you so much in advance! Posted: 01 Jan 2020 03:39 PM PST So I am home from Japan and want to buy a gaming laptop. Looking for between 1000-1300 and thinking best buy. Right now there are these three options. It needs to be something I can pick up within the next couple of days, so it limits my choices. The last one seems the best option but figure I should check just in case. [link] [comments] |

Looking for <$500 Laptop w/ Light Gaming Posted: 01 Jan 2020 07:09 PM PST Hi all! I know absolutely nothing about computers, but I'm currently on the market for a ~$500 or less all-around laptop that can handle games like Minecraft relatively effortlessly. I'm also looking to have this laptop to double up for day-to-day use. Are there any laptops that fit my price range? Do I need to go higher? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
