Two identical machines (A and B) but only one can ping/reach machine C!

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 01:57 PM PST

    Hi all,

So this is a bit of a mystery and it seems to have stumped everyone else I have asked as well, so I come here in the hopes someone may be able to help!

I have two Macbook Laptops (Machine A and Machine B). They are running the same OS, they are the same build, they are connected to the same access point in the same way (wirelessly, 802.11n, 5Ghz)

    I also have a Chromecast (Machine C).

    Here's the odd part:

Machine A can ping Machine C (the Chromecast) but Machine B cannot ping it (or communicate with it in any way)

Machine C (the Chromecast) also cannot reach Machine B, but can reach Machine A.

Interestingly, Machine B does receive the Multicast announcements for it advertising it's existence. It also has a valid arp entry for Machine C (the same as on Machine A).

All other machines on the network can all talk to each other and reach other no problem. Machine B can talk to everything else but Machine C, and they can all talk to Machine B.

I cannot work out why on Earth this could be...!

These are the things I have tried so far, to no avail

    • Swapped the IP address of Machine A and Machine B
    • Confirmed both Machine A and Machine B have the correct ARP address showing (in arp -a).
    • I have tried using arping and pinging the mac address, and Machine B gets timeouts where Machine A works fine.
    • Confirmed that there is no firewall on either computer or anything else like that that could be getting in the way
    • Ruled out software issues on the Macbooks (started both in recovery console which has a working terminal)
    • When connecting via Ethernet rather than WiFi, Machine B can talk to Machine C fine...

I would be very keen for any suggestions, further diagnostic ideas, other things to try or any ideas as to what's happening!

    Many thanks!

Getting MAC address from modem with a missing label

Looking for firewall hardware for home

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 03:49 PM PST

    Hey all!

I'm moving to a new house next week with RJ45 sockets in each room and a beautiful 19'' network rack with a patch panel. Already sorted the network switch but I'm looking to get a firewall too. Spent the past hours looking for the perfect one but have been unsuccessful so far...

Ideally I'm looking to run IPFire or pfSense on some hardware that I can mount in that rack (doesn't have to, but very nice to have), with 3 to 4 gigabit network interfaces, maybe even powerful enough run a VPN or have some storage for caching updates. All that for a budget of about 300 to 400€.

What I found so far is:

    • PC Engines APU2 board: The most known option (had an Alix a few years ago). Fits the budget, is OK spec wise, but it's hard to find a good rack enclosure with an HDD mount for a reasonable price.
    • ITX-M9F: Randomly found that one, seems to be a good bang for the buck. Nice hardware, good price. Can be found with a rack enclosure & PSU for relatively cheap. Doesn't support AES-NI though but seems to be powerful enough nonetheless. Just a bit worried about the "no-name" vendor (if anyone has any experience with those vendors, please share!).

And that's pretty much it... I've been looking on the SuperMicro side as well but haven't found exactly what I was looking for. Maybe I missed something? I'm also considering building a mini PC (again, in a rackable case) but haven't found the right parts so far.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks & happy New Year!

Network to garage PC and WiFi in the yard

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 10:55 AM PST

Hello group, I need some recommendations on how to connect my current network to my garage PC via Ethernet and to provide WiFi coverage outside.

    I was looking at the EnGenius 5GHz Wireless Outdoor AP/Client Bridge/CPE, directional antenna, long-range, point-to-point, IP65, 27dBm,13 dBi, [2-Pack] (N-ENH500 KIT) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007ZDC64I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ST4dEbQA5QVZS

Just not sure if the remote device can provide the wired and the WiFi at the same time? The reason I need the remote device to do this rather than the source device is that the area I need to cover via WiFi will be blocked from the source unit by metal roof on the house.

Router's SSID changed on it's own after circuit breaker trips

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 06:24 PM PST

TLDR: My router's default SSID (after reset) was different from the default right out the box after a circuit breaker trip. What's going on?

Yesterday my circuit breaker tripped and after turning it back on I couldn't connect to my router. I did the usual unplug and plug everything back and pray that things go back to normal routine, but of course nothing works. Usually if there is no internet connection I could at least connect to my router, in this case let's call it WiFi1234 (default SSID, never changed it). But this time I couldn't find my router from the networks list, I also tried manually entering it (with the information provided at the back of the router), nothing. Then I tried resetting, assuming that the network name would surely change back to the default (WiFi1234), also nothing, it's like my router just went completely AWOL.

(I am far from a network geek so everything I was about to do was what I thought made sense.)

So I went to get a USB ethernet adapter for my laptop and tried a wired connection. First I tried connecting directly to my modem to make sure internet connection is fine, it works. Then I connect to my router, works too. So I logged into my router to see what's going on, and I found out that my SSID (previously WiFi1234) has been changed, to let's call it WiFi5678 (password has been changed as well). I thought it was strange, so I changed the SSID, reset the router again to see if it went back to WiFi1234. Strangely WiFi5678 seems to be the default.

So my question is, does something like this happen? Is there an explanation to this? Why is the default not the information at the back of the router (or even the information in the box). Everything works fine now but I'm just curious as to why something like this would happen.

    I have a couple of guesses myself;

Guess 1: My router is a refurbished set. They changed the details but the default is still the previous settings.

Guess 2: Somehow they messed up the information sticker and the router at the factory (unlikely because the SSID right out the box was WiFi1234 from the beginning).

Guess 3: The circuit breaker trip somehow caused my router to "change personality" which I don't even-

Connection to irc server times out after random amount of hours

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 03:47 AM PST

Connection from my server to quakenet server times out after some time. When I see the lag starting to appear on irssi console I can verify with telnet that the connection still works but irssi times out still. This does not affect SSH connection so I do not have any clue on what could be causing this.

Any ideas what could cause this or what should I check to get this fixed? My server is running on top of Hyper-V, routed with Ubiquiti Edgerouter and cable modem is Technicolor CGA2121

Internet in Guest house. Why am I getting internet speed dips?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 11:08 AM PST

    Hello,

I have the modem setup in the main house with its own Netgear router and I wired the guest house to connect to the main house.

I have a 2nd netgear router in the guest house that's connected to the main netgear router in the main house. So essentially this 2nd router is just acting like a "branch."

Randomly, I would get huge internet drop offs and when I connect to the WiFi from the main house I'd see that it's completely normal. Any reason why this is?

Is there a better way I can configure the communications in the guest house?

I need several Ethernet hard wire connections in the guest house and a few wireless devices. The router works great, when it's working.

    Thanks

What causes too high downstream power?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 07:50 PM PST

Hello, I have been having intermittent internet issues for the past two weeks. I can't get a tech out here until next week! I have suddenlink internet with a 200mbps package but I'm only getting ~25mbps when connected directly to the modem.

I have had an Arris Surfboard SB6190 for over 2 years but I have only experienced minor latency issues from time to time. Nothing like this, almost every night my internet dies between 6pm onward until about 10pm. If I reset the modem the internet comes back for about an hour and then dies again. This has been consistent for two weeks.

I read online about the Puma chip issues on the SB6190 so I went and purchased the Netgear CM500 which is a 16x4 modem. I pulled similar downstream numbers after I had the new modem provisioned.

https://imgur.com/a/rj1NC8N (here are the downstream and upstream channels)

What could possibly cause this? I've made no changes to anything... the tech support people at suddenlink said they think it's my router but it's clearly not.

    TIA

Is it possible to bridge router Router wirelessly for ethernet connection in different room?

I bought desktop recently and desktop doesn't have built in wifi network card.

so I was wondering if the following is possible

Router1 (has WAN connection) in basement/another room

Router2 (wifi bridge? connection to router1) and connects to desktop via ethernet cable

I haven't heard of it so I was wondering if such thing is possible cause pcie wifi card for desktop seems to be just as expensive as router

    Connecting wall ethernet jacks

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 07:16 AM PST

Hi everyone, I live in a condo and it has 3 ethernet wall jacks that looks like this. In my condo there's also a panel that I assume is where all of these jacks terminate (I don't know for sure and don't have a wire tracing tool). There's 3 open ended cables that look like ethernet cables so I assume these would terminate at the 3 wall jacks. This is the inside of that panel. The green and blue cables that are connected is where my current internet connection is coming from I believe - it was installed by my internet provider. One of these cables connects to a floor jack that connects to the modem/router (TP-Link Archer C7).

I want to be able to use the 3 ethernet wall jacks so I can connect my computers and devices directly instead of over wifi or powerline. I assumed that if I unplugged the blue cable from the green cable and plug it into an ethernet switch with all the other blue cables (which I assume terminates at the floor/wall jacks) that I would get internet at the jacks. I tried this with one of the open ended blue cable and crimped it myself with a connector but when it's plugged into the switch, there's no green light. What am I doing wrong? Here's how it looks with the ethernet switch. The switch is a TP-Link TL-SG1005D.

What should I buy for small apartment and home office?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 07:53 AM PST

I have fiber internet 600/60 mbps which came with some modem (Hitron GNV4) and wifi router. I prefer to use wifi since I use my laptop around the apartment. Apartment is small (50 sqm) so range is not a problem. I have around 6 devices connected (2x laptop, 2x phone, music streamer, philips hue bridge). I'm doing webdev from home and so I consider setting up a small test web server at home for some fun projects but that's in the future.

I'd like to get a better router and AP that would be stable, have fastest wifi possible (to take advantage of 600/60 internet), offer some basic security (firewall) and maybe VPN (also for future projects).

From what I read here I should be buying 2 devices - wired router and wifi access point instead all in one wifi router. My max budget is ~$350 but obviously I'd prefer to spend less.

    My questions:

    1. Do I need any other devices?

    2. Should I spend more on router or AP since I want fast wifi and have very small network?

    3. What are max wifi speeds I can expect on wifi AC (I have MBP pro from 2014 - changing to new one soon and iPhone XS)?

    4. Can you recommend any specific devices?

Thank you for any help and great sub.

    Thunderbolt 3 networking vs 10GbE

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 06:00 PM PST

Hi I am looking to connect 2 home computers (windows and a Linux box) together with 10Gig Ethernet. They are only going to be 3 metres apart so distance isn't really an issue.

I was looking at 10gig Ethernet through a mellanox connectx-3 card as it seems to have the best power consumption (3.5w) but then I saw TB3 has Networking also. Given the price of pcie thunderbolt cards, are there any power consumption/cost numbers floating around?

I ask because there were sfp+ pcie cards chewing 15w+ power and one of these boxes will be always on.

Hoping to get the communities experiences and the pros/cons of this. Thanks

    Disabled Ethernet Ports?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 05:59 PM PST

    Good evening,

I apologize if this has been asked before. I tried searching for it several different ways in this sub and could not find anything relative to my issue. My Modem/Router combo has 4 ethernet ports on the rear; however, only the first port (Eth1) works. I have a Comtrend VR3060 modem/router provided by my IP. I live in a rural area and their tech support said, and I quote, "Yeah I don't know about all that nerdy stuff but here's the password have at it." So I have access to my router's hub and there's a plethora of options but i have no idea why the other ports are disabled or how to re-enable them.

I'm happy to post any screenshots, logs, or information needed if you just let me know what you need.

    Thanks in advance!

    DVR + mesh network?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 05:50 PM PST

I have a cable modem/router from my cable provider and a Tivo DVR set up on a moca network. I was not happy with the wireless performance and range so I added a mesh network. I disabled HDCP on the modem/router and enabled it on the new mesh router. This had been working great until I noticed that my DVR could no longer connect to the internet. How can I resolve this?

Lag when gaming or browsing the web

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 05:49 PM PST

Hey all so gonna be a bit vague as i need to know where to start, i have FttH from the fiber box i have my router which is wired to my pc. On my pc while gaming or browsing I'll notice lag, my ping goes from 20 to 80 and is bouncing around between there. I'll run speed tests and get loke 5mbps down. If i restart the router it'll work and I'll have 100mbps down for about 5 minutes. But if i go to the garage and restart the fiber box its good for about an hour.

Any ideas what it could be or steps i can take to check and see if i can fix it? I understand its quite vague but I'm not the greatest at these things.

    Windows 10 pro lost WD-mybookliveduo

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 05:28 PM PST

Short story. I have a NAS that was accessible and manageable from multiple computers on my home network. I have wired and wireless connection I use, but after updating to Windows 10 Pro ( from WIN7) I cant find my NAS when I log onto my VPN. Prior to WIN 10 I logged on to VPN and was able to download directly to my cloud and now I can't. When on VPN now I can not see my NAS in my network devices so can't access it. Any ideas would be appreciated.

ethernet connection is very slow while my WiFi is doing just fine.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 11:21 AM PST

I'm seriously losing my mind, iv'e tried every solution, bought a new cable and tried, no luck, installed new drivers no luck, deleted new drivers no luck....

I usually solve issues eventually but this one is very weird, Iv'e even checked so the motherboard is OK and everything seems to be fine, just for some reason it only gives me 1 mbps dl & 2mbps upload.

Has anyone else experienced something similar?

    Arris SURFboard SBG6900-AC constantly disconnecting

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 04:45 PM PST

To preface, I'm not very tech savvy but I'm good with google searches, and I'm finding nothing of use.

So, my parents have xfinity internet and didn't want to keep renting the router and decided to buy their own. They bought this piece of shit "Surfboard" from Walmart, and ever since, the WiFi in the house has been absolute garbage. My phone switches from WiFi to data all the time. If someone is streaming Netflix/Prime, the screen will just freeze, do that spinning ring thing, and never come back on. When I try to do homework on my laptop, the connection will just drop and I'll lose what I've done. The only way go fix it is to have my network setting troubleshoot the problem. But it happens about every ten minutes. It's infuriating.

I've tried to log into the router settings page as shown on the company's FAQ page using the IP address but when I use the login and password that the stupid website says to use, I get a message saying it's wrong.

Please god can one of you smart techie people help me. I'm losing my mind. I'll post screenshots of what I'm dealing with and here's a link of the product:

    Ethernet can’t identify network

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 04:31 PM PST

My daughters computer has a problem connecting with my Intel motherboard adapter. The error message is no Ethernet network identified. The adapter light is on, and I tried changing cables. The computer worked yesterday and for a few years prior. Nothing new installed. I have tried command prompt ipconfig /renew , ipconfig /windsock reset, netsh int ip reset, ipconfig flushDNS, . I also deleted in Device mangers the Intel adapter And downloaded new drivers from intel. I tried IP4. Properties manual DHCP using google 8.8.8.8 and alternate 8.8.4.4 Nothing seems to work. I am considering buying a PCI-e. Network adapter or a USB3 to Ethernet external adapter.

Would circumventing the Intel mother board Intel adapter work with one of the above alternatives? Right now I am using a USB Wi-Fi USB device That is giving me temp internet. Not particularly fast so , not an answer.

Best software solution for remote access to my NAS? (and other NAS related questions)

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 07:36 AM PST

Hi all, I tried looking around the subreddit with the search feature, but found nothing that answered my question. So here it is.

    Context:

I managed to cobble together a computer with spare parts I had, and I've set it up in our living room to be used as our home media storage solution for our network.

In the meantime my Tresorit service is up for yearly renewal for a whopping $US 300+ in a month or so and I'm more or less satisfied with it so I was thinking of switching. I figured I could maybe figure something out with this new computer.

    Requirements:

The only problem is that my partner wants the convenience of a mobile app on her phone to access her files as well as a web interface for when she's at work.

Security is also important to the both of us (hence why we were with Tresorit in the first place).

I also plan on using the machine for these purposes:

    • Plex server (I have a plex premium account if that makes any difference)

    • Steam client (I'd like to try remote playing games on my home office PC using it's beefier setup)

    • Emulator for consoles (our TV has a limited amount of HDMI inputs so we'll have to shelve our old wii for the computer and with it our Nintendo store bought Genesis and NES games)

    My questions:

1 - What kind of power settings in Windows should I set up to insure the device is always on, but can ramp up when necessary?

2 - What software solutions do you recommend to access our files?

3 - Any software solution or built-in Windows solution to remote into my living room PC from my Home Office PC? Maybe even have it show-up in a window on my computer?

4 - Are there any other considerations I should have in mind with this setup?

Port Forwarding Broken on 5GHz Band

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 04:05 PM PST

This is one of the stranger issues I've encountered and I'm hitting a wall.

Earlier this week, I noticed that some services I have ports forwarded for (Plex server, Parsec) weren't working as expected. I noticed in troubleshooting that none of my forwarded ports actually read as open in the web tools. I tried a lot of basic steps (service restarts, machine reboot, router reboot, etc) to no avail when I switched my WiFi connection from my 5GHz network to my 2.4 GHz network and suddenly all the ports were open.

I haven't been able to discern what the cause might be for this, and the handful of things I've tried since (changing static IP, forwarding new ports, deleting and recreating forwarding rules, a router firmware upgrade, changing DNS servers) have not resulted in properly forwarded ports on my 5GHz network. I've come to rely on the higher bandwidth I get via that connection and unfortunately don't have the option of going wired or switching to powerline networking. This came out of nowhere and I'm unsure what could have caused it.

TL;DR 5GHz band of WiFi network doesn't forward ports, but 2.4GHz does. Any idea what the source of this issue could be?

Need help figuring out how to set up my home network so I have more control over some settings

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 09:49 AM PST

Hello r/homenetworking! I moved into my own place a month ago and got cable internet with a wifi router from my ISP and they're terribly restrictive about the router. I can only change the network name and password via their online interface, and the normal router settings that I'd access via the home IP are not accessible since they changed the standard admin/password login

The router is a Technicolor EPC3940L.

The reason why I want to access these settings is that my roommate is very concerned about negative effects of Wifi, and the router is set up in his room since it is situated centrally in the apartment and the only coax outlet is there. While I think it is a bullshit paranoia of his, I still respect that and what I want to do is have the LAN functionality on 24/7, and set a window of time in which the wifi is active. Can I, by whatever means, bypass my ISP's lockdown of the settings, or do I need to get a second router (I'm not sure on the specifics but I know my parents' home network is set up with a second router set up as the actual access point for all devices)

I hope I have provided all information needed for anyone to give me advice, and I am very thankful for any piece of help!
