My Internet cuts out randomly - both wifi and wired. Could this be a modem issue?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 08:52 AM PST

Hey all. Over the past few weeks, my internet will randomly cut out and kick me while gaming online. Then I'll check on my phone and the wifi isn't working.

While at first I assumed this was a router issue, the fact that both my hard wired and wifi are down makes me think it could be my modem.

What do you all think? I'm using a NetGear R6700 router and I don't recall the model of my modem.

    laptops and switch wont connect

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 06:04 PM PST

I am having an issue that appears to trace back to my connection itself. I'm really hoping this is the right place to ask and I am terribly sorry if it's not.

So what's happening is that neither laptops nor my nintendo switch can connect to the internet. They are connecting to the router but not receiving internet. However, the PS4, ipad, and both cellphones in the house can all connect and function normally. This started happening sometime last night. The switch was the first to stop, and then today both laptops. When I run command prompt on the laptops they tell me media is disconnected.

Does anyone know what might be up? Any help is appreciated, I'm only moderately tech inclined and I'm losing my mind honestly.

    Got a weird one

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 07:44 PM PST

Hi all - I'd appreciate any help/ideas anyone has alot, I'm going crazy.

My home PC suddenly stopped seeing the ssid for my wireless network for the home internet (android devices and another windows laptop can see). BUT the home PC can connect to another ssid (when I hotspot my phone).

    What I've tried so far:

1.Disabling and re-enabling my Broadcom 802.11ac Network Adapter

    1. Changing the MAC address of the network adapter

    2. running inSSIDer to see if that could see the wireless network I can't see

    3. netsh wlan show filters - no filters shown

5.I tried a USB wireless adapter (but the adapter also can only see my phone hotspot and not the ssid I want

    1. manual connect to wifi (as if it were a hidden network)

Seems so weird to me - If router is the problem, why can all other devices connect just fine? If the network adapter in the PC was the problem, why can it connect to the hotspot? Is windows somehow the problem??

Are these the best devices for my aspired internet plan?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 06:36 PM PST

Hello! I've finally come to the decision of upgrading my Wifi.

I'm currently on AT&T's Internet 24 plan and will soon purchase Xfinity's "Performance" 100 Mbps internet plan (I may upgrade in the future). With the mindset of minimizing costs along with the recommendation from numerous other Redditors, I plan on purchasing my own modem and router setup. So far, I've come up with these two items as a good setup for my household (two-story townhouse, roughly 1500 sq ft; three family members, one of which is a "gamer" that loves playing large multiplayer games, sometimes even while another family member watches Netflix):

I tried doing as much research as a could before choosing these devices. Are these the best devices for what I have in mind for my upgrade, or should I make a change? Looking forward to whatever you guys have to tell me. Thanks!

[Advice] Stable Internet in Rural France: WiFi recommendations and a dual WAN setup over 4G+ and ADSL/fiber.

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 11:46 AM PST

    Hi Reddit,

I need some help figuring out what my options are to install stable internet in a home in rural france.

My gf's mother (Rachel) moved back in with her mother (Kate) in rural france in order to take care of her. Internet there is slow and unstable, which impedes her work and social life. So I am trying to improve on that.

    • I have a free left-over data-SIM of 300 Gb/month to be used in the EU.
    • I think I can pool together some money from the entire family, since everybody uses that home as a (holiday) retreat to improve the situation.

The internet is primarily used for conference calling, email, simple stuff. Ideally they would like to use Netflix as well.

Travel times for any other family member to rural france is about 12 hours. Currently we only go there during the holidays, but we would like to go more often: when business is quiet and less demanding - so when working remotely from there is an option.

The setup right now is ADSL using an Orange livebox 2, which is the wifi access point for the groundfloor area, and a powerplug wifi extention for the 1st floor. There are two enormous issues with this: - Firstly, the wifi connection itself is not great: when multiple people connect to the wifi, it gets all weird. People get priority, others get disconnected etc. -Secondly, the internet ADSL connection has extremely low latency (in the order of 3500 ms).

The best performance I got at night, when I was the lone user of the ADSL, was 100kb/s on a torrent download. But the latency is such an issue: opening a website is a real endevour.

Fiber has been announced in the area, but this is the south of France, so I am unsure when it will actually arrive.

My goal is to create: 1. a solid wifi network in and around the house. 2. which accepts WAN inputs from 4G+ reception and ADSL now/fiber later, and which will automatically switch between the two.

Obviously, now it would use 4G+ as the primary source of internet but later it would use the fiber connection with the 4G+ as a back-up.

The house is ancient with several add-ons built against the house: think literally 1 meter thick stone walls for the old house. Wifi signals from inside the house seem to attenuate to unusable levels outside the house and e.g. the guest bedroom add-on. The livebox is obviously not a very strong source, so maybe it doesn't say too much, but I expect it to be a hurdle to overcome.

    • For WiFi in an around the building I am looking at Mesh Networking as an option, or paying an installation guy money to place a LAN cable at strategic places throughout the house and place WiFi AP's. I have an Asus RT-AC66U left over.
    • For 4G+ I need a modem, and I need an antenna that I can place quite far away from the house (ideally on the hill 30m over, or on top of the house is fine too.) I have a TP-Link Archer M200 V2, but I am not sure if this suits.
    • And I need a device that switches between the two WAN signals.

I am ok flashing devices to custom firmware in order to keep the costs down, in particular if that makes them more stable as well.

Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated!

I'm getting really bad packet loss at the 2nd hop

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 07:58 PM PST

As the title says I'm getting bad packet loss at the second hop.

Trying to play a game when I randomly lose connection, try to log back in and I get back in but only before losing connection a minute later. Using ping plotter I see I'm getting a lot of packet loss at the 2nd hop which would be my modem right? every other hop doesn't show packet loss however. Why am I able to still use the internet and go on to websites but not join that server?

I am also using a Netgear PL 1000 to connect to my modem which is in the other room.

Issue with wifi being slow only on download

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 07:58 PM PST

I'm having an odd WiFi issue here. About 3 weeks ago my wifi was putting out about 1mb down and 40mb up, even on local traffic from my nas server. so I thought it might be the wifi AP/Router thats causing the issue and swapped it out for a slower router till I can get to my local microcenter and pick up a new one... issue solved right? Well today this one is now doing the same thing and don't understand why. I changed the channel, reset it, etc. Could it be a qos issue from my switch? (Using a dell powerconnect 2824) It's never done this before and have been running the same config ever since I installed it. Thought about RFI but it would also effect the upload which isn't effected. 70% of the WiFi traffic is used for serving up video from the server and is annoying me to no end.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Can’t clear settings of an ASUS router

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 04:11 PM PST

I'm trying to clear the settings of things like my port forwarding list, offline clients, and reserved IP addresses.

I've tried several times to hard reset holding the reset button. I've also tried to hard reset holding the WPS button. Every time it seems to work just like the instructions make it look. It boots into a new network setup but when I finish the new router set up my old settings are still there....Sooo frustrating!

My router is a GT-AC5300 and it's running official Asus firmware. Any advice would be awesome

AX11000 Router comparison: Netgear, Asus, TP-Link

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 07:44 PM PST

I've been looking at the current AX11000 offerings the past couple of days, and found reams of misinformation. Nearly every review, online store and other sources contradict eachother constantly. I've come to the following conclusions, and would really appreciate others chiming in to correct me, answer questions, or ask even more questions!

Note that this (ironically?) isn't taking into account actual wireless performance. I don't have access to these routers to test. I'm more interested in internal specs & functionality right now.

Between Netgears RAX200 & Asus ROG Rapture AX11000 & TP-Links Archer AX11000 at first glance, there is minimal difference. However, the key area of focus is on the ports:

All 3 have a single 2.5Gbps WAN port. All other ports are 1gbps. However, Asus and Netgear also have an additional dedicated 1Gbps WAN port, whereas I cannot see one listed anywhere for TP-Links archer. I've seen a lot of people saying that there is little difference in functionality, but unless someone can demonstrate Dual WAN capability on the Archer, this is a key difference that I think nearly every review has overlooked, as currently I don't believe that Dual WAN is possible on the Archer, and if you want this functionality, that becomes a dealbreaker. Can anyone confirm?

Drilling down even more into this, there's the matter of link aggregation. All 3 routers support link aggregation, and all 3 routers seemingly only support it on 2 specific LAN ports, which to me seems like a tie. However, the Netgear RAX200 also has an additional link aggregation- aggregating the 1gbps WAN port with the 1st LAN port. Hopefully someone can clarify this, but in theory this to me seems like the RAX 200 can support a dual WAN of 2.5gbps and 2gbps, whereas the Asus, lacking the ability to aggregate the WAN port, could only achieve a dual WAN of 2.5gbps and 1gbps. Am I correct in this assumption? If so, the Netgear clearly has the edge, especially as it has an identical number of ports to the Asus overall.

the last point to cover off on ports is quantity. TP-Links Archer has 8 LAN ports- double that of the Asus and Netgear offerings. This is awesome, as assuming you are taking advantage of link aggregation for a primary wired connection, the Archer leaves you with 6 additional LAN ports, The Asus leaves you with 2 additional LAN ports, and the Netgear leaves you with 1 additional LAN port if you run 2.5gbps + 2gbps dual WAN, but is versatile enough to match the Asus and have 2 additional WAN ports with 2.5gbps + 1gbps dual WAN. Remember, the Asus doesn't seem to be able to achieve the first configuration (would love confirmation on this!)

So, if you aren't interested in dual WAN capability this seems like a clear win for the TP-Link Archer- and it has one more bonus which I've found very little info on: Whilst the Netgear and Asus come with 2x USB-A 3.0 ports, the Archer comes with 1x USB-A 3.0 port and swaps the second one out for 1x USB-C port! As far as future proofing goes, this seems like a bonus to me, and I'm surprised not to see a USB-C offering on the Asus or Netgear. But, I've no idea of the capability of this port. Can anyone shed light on it? For example, would a USB-C capable Android phone or even a VR headset such as the oculus Quest be able to utilise a wired USB-C internet connection?

Finally, there's processing power and RAM.

All 3 have a 1.8GHz Quad Core processor (TP-Link & Netgear confirm 64 bit, I assume the Asus is too?), But the RAM differs. I'm seeing different values listed in different reviews, so going off of manufacturer websites:

TP-Link Archer: 1GB RAM with 512MB Flash. Asus ROG: 1GB RAM with 256MB Flash. Netgear RAX200: Not confirmed, but the majority of places suggest 1GB RAM with 512MB Flash.

let's be generous and assume they are all the same spec'd processors and RAM other than capacity. Asus loses out with the 256MB Flash compared to the other two at 512MB. its worth noting that TP-Link claim 3 additional coprocessors, but I have no info on the specs of these or if the others also have these coprocessors, but choose not to list them. If we take them at merit, it seems like the Archer is the most powerful, but I would be very interested to see more detailed RAM and processor specs, including coprocessors if anyone has these.

So ultimately, The Archer seems to win out if you aren't interested in Dual WAN, as it has more LAN ports, and potentially more processing power than the other two, as well as the versatility of the USB-C port. If the Archer had Dual WAN capability it would be a no brainer. but sadly, unless someone can verify that it does, this seems like a glaring oversight for an expensive, cutting edge piece of kit.

Between the Asus and the Netgear, you get more Flash RAM and (if someone can confirm my theory) more overall WAN performance with the 2.5gbps and 2gbps configuration on the Netgear RAX200. I haven't delved too deeply into firmware and configurability, but I'm assuming with an advanced knowledge of networking, the capabilities of each should all match.

One final question though: Do any of these routers NOT support a Wireless Bridge, aka wirelessly connecting to another access point? That is functionality I personally consider a must have for versatilities sake.

    Google Home and Ubiquti

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 07:09 PM PST

I have a UAP AC LR connected to one of the ports on a nighthawk r7000, phones and whatever else connect fine to it and everything works with my lifx lights and to link plugs when I'm on the Ubiquti network. As soon as I got to data, lifx lights go "offline" in the app, and the plugs go offline as well. Google Home smart clock and mini absolutely refuse to connect and now they won't even connect to the original network, on top of that, the nest thermostat connects to the Ubiquti one, but can't pull updates and won't connect on the app. What's going on here???

Update, everything BUT the Google Homes are working again. Both Homes say "Check connection" mid way through the process.

Auto 2.4 / 5 ghz worth the trouble?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 05:59 PM PST

I really like the idea of my Synology router being able to auto select 2.4 versus 5 GHz, but it seems to cause a lot of trouble with IOT devices. Most devices require you to be specifically on the 2.4 GHz network on the device that is setting up the IOT device. On my iPhone this means that I have to turn off the Wi-Fi walk very far away and turn the Wi-Fi back on. And even then it doesn't always work

Is auto select worth the headache?

    router/wifi upgrade advice

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 01:53 PM PST

    I have a TP-Link Archer C7 (version 2) which I use as the router/wifiAP in a one bedroom condo.

It's fine, but sometimes it doesn't "feel" as fast as it should be (granted, this may be down to the internet service).

I don't have any signal problems (except in the bathroom which is rarely an issue), but I know that newer router models are capable of higher bandwidth, lower latency, longer range, and have faster CPUs/more memory (which enables more advanced QoS-type features as well).

I'm thinking of maybe upgrading to something more recent, but not necessarily the "latest and greatest". Do you think it would be worth it to upgrade to a latest-and-greatest secondhand model from the last generation? And if so, what model would you suggest?

I don't need multiple routers or a mesh network because the place is small. I also eventually plan to setup a standalone pfsense router, so while router and wifi performance are both important, in the long-term the wifi performance will be the most important.

    Small Network Set up advice

    Thanks for reading this much.

I'm a step above a beginner for networking and cs in general.

Going to set up a home network. Comcast is my IP, xfinity was the name they came to use for pr purposes. I have 7 users who have [phones, tablets, etc., and about 9 "smart" home devices.

I have a plex server for us to watch original content on. 2 of the network users are next door and slow my wifi down. Any way to set this up as a vlan or something?

Use both CenturyLink Modem and Linksys Velop (1Gig fiber PPPoE)

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 03:56 PM PST

TLDR: is it more secure/performant to have a modem + Linksys Velop or just setup PPPoE on the Velop?

For the past 2.5 years since I got 1gig fiber, I've had this setup that has worked just fine with no issues:

ONT > Zyxel C1100Z > Linksys Velop (parent node) > Netgear JGS524NA switch > 2 Linksys Velop child nodes & all other hardwired devices

I have WiFi disabled on the Zyxel and all WiFi devices and hardwired devices are connected to the Velops and Netgear switch.

I have DHCP enabled on the Zyxel and a DHCP reservation for the Velop parent node (mainly for Plex Media Server port forwarding). The Velop parent node is the only device on the Zyxel.

On the Velop parent node, it is configured for automatic - DHCP. I understand this is a double NAT setup, however I have not had any issues so far. I want to manage my devices on the Velop instead of the Zyxel, so I did not want to set the Velop on bridge mode.

I have tested and confirmed that I can setup PPPoE on the Velop and completely remove the Zyxel. Performance-wise, I can't tell a difference from my current setup.

So I'm wondering for a security and performance perspective, should I ditch the Zyxel and setup PPPoE on the Velop or just keep both setup how I have it? I saw a post about CL support having backend access to modems they supply, but not sure if that's true. If it is true, I would consider removing their modem and not having that security vector.

In the future, I do want to look at either removing the Velops or adding something to allow more control over my network as far as monitoring and VLANs for my smart home devices. Possibly Ubiquiti, unless I can just keep the Velops and find a better router to put in between the ONT and my devices.

Large house, many users and devices

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 03:52 AM PST

Hello all. I recently upgraded my internet with Spectrum with the 1Gig service, but I have a feeling that my network is being bogged down by my router. I currently have the RT-AC66 with the latest firmware from ASUS. My house is over 4k sq feet that is a five level split. I have Cat 6 wired on every floor and each of my four bedrooms. I have two Ubuquiti APs that are on the 3rd and 5th levels. The 3rd level is on one side of the house and the fifth is on the opposite side. After my router, I have a TP-Link 24 port switch along with two 8 port switches that are D-Link and ASUS. I have them connected to the other ports in the router. I am mildly skilled with networking and I can follow videos or instructions with configuring. Any help would be appreciated!

Edit: Sorry, thought my question was in here. I was wondering if I should replace the router and if so, what would be a good suggestion.

I currently have the TP-Link AC1200 Archer C5 router and it seems it might be hitting its end of days soon as I've had to reset it multiple times every week now. Anyone have a recommendation for a new router for $100 or under? I dont have that big of a place so no need to setup access points either. Just need a halfway decent router that hopefully lasts as long as this one has.

    Google wi-fi for my house?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 11:25 AM PST

My parents live in a 300 sq meters, or around 3000 sq ft house, and they're consistently having wi-fi issues. The connection speed is meh but it's good for what the use it for. It's a 30 Mbps connection, and it's using a modem alcatel lucent from the ISP. It's both a router and modem.

The wi-fi doesn't reach their room that's basically on the other side of the house and it doesn't reach upstairs either.
We had bought a repeater which helped but not enough. Right now I'm considering buying google wi-fi because of it's simplicity. However the walls are mostly brick and concrete blocks. Because of this I'm unsure that it'll be the best of buying a google wi-fi.

Using ethernet cable to create more access point's is a no-go. I've been reading a little here and there on reddit about these kind of problems and on how all of this works but I'm still unfamiliar with certain terms and your help would be very appreciated.

    Thank you very much!
