Android users, Listen to YouTube videos with the screen off by sharing the video from YT app to VLC and then selecting "Play as Audio" from VLC's options.

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 09:47 AM PST

If you have an ASMR video or just want to listen to YouTube with your phone's screen off, just tap Share in the YouTube app, tap "Play in VLC". Once in the media player click the three dots (options?) button in the bottom right and select "Play as Audio".

You can now switch off the screen and listen instead of putting the phone in your pocket and accidentally click stuff

We should really be keeping an eye on Asus this year

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 07:00 PM PST

Asus undoubtedly created home runs with the ZenFone 6 and ROG Phone II. I can't wait to see what they do this year. Perhaps the ZenFone 7 could compete effectively with the OnePlus 8.

I personally think the ROG Phone III could be a smash hit among this community if it were released with a less gamery aesthetic, microSD card support, and water resistance. I just hope it would have Verizon support.

    Astrophotography is AMAZING

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 05:01 AM PST

TLDR: pretty pictures of the stars, link at the bottom

So I went on a camping trip into the Wahiba desert during new moon (= no light = lots of stars!), and I decided to try out the latest GCam 7 port on my OnePlus 6, which includes the astrophotography feature.

For those unfamiliar: the latest Pixels introduced this feature which is like a night mode on steroids, specifically tuned to make pictures of stars.

What it does is take pictures of the sky for 1-5 minutes (during which the phone has to be on a tripod, which I don't have... so I resorted to sticking a selfy stick in the sand), and then use google's magic AI-sauce to churn out a great picture of the stars. This is harder than you'd think: even with a high-end DSLR it's hard to take great astro pics, as you can't really increase the exposure time over 30 seconds: any longer than that and the stars become stripes instead of dots due to earth rotating like a little bitch. Google accounts of all of this. Doing the same with a DSLR would mean lots of work in photoshop to combine the multiple pictures

The result is AMAZING. Not just did MY PHONE capture the milky way, it even handled having us being around a campfire in the foreground.

Without further ado, this is the result: https://imgur.com/a/mYSQakD

For anybody wondering, I used the Urnyx GCAM port: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-urnyx05/

Samsung Tab S5e. TIP: Drastically increased speed

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 06:45 AM PST

I bought this mainly for media consumption but straight out the box the speed was horrendous. I noticed every time I switch been any app or to the home screen there was a big slowdown and a very noticeable change in display colour temperature. It took me a while to realise; in the display settings -> Screen mode, by default the mode is set to 'adaptive display', after changing it to 'basic' the speed DRASTICALLY increased! Secondly, after to time letting your eyes adjust, you realise 'basic' is actually more colour accurate! For example, white isn't very yellow anymore. Even my technophobic partner said when watching a movie with adaptive display "why does the grass look luminescent"

My tablet is now usable and I no longer regret buying it. Give it a try.

Furthermore, you can disable security lock to speed up wake from sleep. Do that at your own risk!

TLDR: Settings > Display > Screen mode > Basic. Let your eyes adjust, this is actually more colour accurate and movies look much better.

Guide to change default android emojis (root/non-root)

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 10:31 PM PST

    Why would I do that?

If you don't want to root and/or your desired emoji is not available in magisk modules library, do this first:

    1. Find the .ttf file of your desired emoji (can be searched via any search-engine)

      Blobmoji
      JoyPixels

    2. Rename it to NotoColorEmoji.ttf (SamsungColorEmoji.ttf if you're using a samsung device)

note- Proceed on your own risk, I'll suggest making a nandroid backup before.

    Non-root

Via TWRP (unlocked bootloader is required)

    how to intall twrp
note - if you don't want to change your recovery, you can temporarily boot with TWRP with fastboot boot twrp.img

    1. Place the ttf file you downloaded somewhere you can find easily in your device

    2. Boot into TWRP

    3. Goto mount and mount system partition

    4. Goto Advanced and select File Manager

    5. Find NotoColorEmoji.ttf (or SamsungColorEmoji.ttf) in your system directory. You'll generally fing it in "system/fonts" or "system/system/fonts" depending upon your android varient.

    6. Replace it with the desired one which you download and renamed earlier.

    7. Boot into system

    8. Profit

    Root

    Magisk modules

    • Easy-peasy

    Using any root explorer tool

    1. Download any file manager which features root exploring (I'd suggest Mixplorer) and give it root access.

    2. Search for NotoColorEmoji.ttf (or SamsungColorEmoji.ttf) in your system directory. You'll generally fing it in "system/fonts" or "system/system/fonts" depending upon your android varient.

    3. Replace it with the desired one which you download and renamed earlier.

    4. Set chmod to 644.

    5. Reboot

    6. Profit

edit - removed adb version from non-root solution because it required TWRP anyways
