    Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012 R2 updates for 12/10/19

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 03:38 PM PST

    Via the Microsoft Support website (8.1/2012 R2, 7/2008 R2):

For Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2:

    • Addresses an issue with evaluating the compatibility status of the Windows ecosystem to help ensure application and device compatibility for all updates to Windows.
    • Addresses an issue in which netdom.exe fails to correctly identify trust relationships when an unconstrained delegation is explicitly enabled by adding bitmask 0x800 to the trust object. The bitmask setting is required because of security changes to the default behavior of unconstrained delegations in Windows updates released on or after July 8, 2019. For more information, see KB4490425 and the article, 6.1.6.7.9 trustAttributes.
    • Security updates to Windows Virtualization, Windows Kernel, Windows Peripherals, the Microsoft Scripting Engine, and Windows Server.

For Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2:

    • Addresses an issue with evaluating the compatibility status of the Windows ecosystem to help ensure application and device compatibility for all updates to Windows.
    • Security updates to Windows Input and Composition, Windows Virtualization, Windows Kernel, Windows Peripherals, the Microsoft Scripting Engine, and Windows Server.

Starting on January 15, 2020, a full-screen notification will appear that describes the risk of continuing to use Windows 7 Service Pack 1 after it reaches end of support on January 14, 2020. The notification will remain on the screen until you interact with it. This notification will only appear on the following editions of Windows 7 Service Pack 1:

Note The notification will not appear on domain-joined machines or machines in kiosk mode.

Windows 7 users now have ONE MONTH remaining of extended support, which will end on 1/14/20. This makes this update the 2nd to last update before extended support ends. Future security fixes will not occur after this date. Preparations to move to Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 should be underway. Consider asking for either as a Christmas gift.

Windows updates ruined my day again

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 06:55 PM PST

Attempted to render some images in fusion 360

did some other stuff on my linux machine while the render was running in the background.

windows decided to kill all processes without my authorization and update, I needed these renders for my schoolwork.

This is why linux is better and being an "amateur penetration tester" I must say that shutting down the school's computers was easier with windows 10. it took me 1 day as opposed to win7 which took months, this was thanks to an update, In my experience windows updates make it much less secure. Microsoft, would you kindly not update constantly and/or use exclusively manual updates! If one wishes to use a secure OS then consider anything but a windows OS.

    Per-app audio not working correctly

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 02:11 PM PST

Apparently Windows now lets you choose a preferred audio output device for applications: Great!

    It only works sometimes: Damn.

I can get it to work fine for VLC, or Chrome playing Spotify, but it seems to be having a heart attack with games. Sekiro needed me to tell it to use my TV audio 5 times, and now it seems to work..

Hollow Knight / Assassin's Creed Origins / etc just will not work at all.

Expected behaviour: Choosing Output -> Television will have the game output its sound only to the television.

Actual behaviour: Choosing Output -> Television the game continues to play through PC speakers as if nothing had changed.

Trying to get my games reliably on my TV is a serious exercise in frustration. I think I see why people buy consoles.

Can't update ADATA XPG SSD Firmware (Install Driver Fail)

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 10:30 AM PST

I have an XPG 6000 lite SSD, i wanted to update the firmware using some "FWUpdate1.32.zip" file downloaded from a redirect by SSDToolBox by ADATA. It stops at the start after 30 seconds and shows an error dialog "Install Driver fail". I tried disabling driver signature enforcement from Windows but nothing helped.

Can Windows NT 5.1 communicate to NT 4.0 over ethernet connection?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 04:35 PM PST

My Alt+Tab, Start Button and my Cortana search bar do not work at all anymore. I don't know what to do.

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 07:57 PM PST

Title. It just randomly happened one day and it's never been fixed since. I've restarted, shut down, plugged my PC out, every single thing in the book to try and fix it. I'm not sure how I can fix this, or if I ever can, but it's really disheartening. If anyone knows how to help me fix it, please do. It's been a really irritating experience without being able to use them.

Logitech webcam. Changing configuration via registry

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 01:46 PM PST

Hey, I have Logitech B500 webcam with latest driver. I'd like to changing its properties by registry. I know that I can change properties by the GUI, but in this case I have to modify their on other way. I particularly care about changing the "RightLight" property.

    Thanks!

Bluetooth Experts: Help with AAC Bluetooth Codec on Windows 10

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 01:29 PM PST

I have and absolutely love my Apple AirPods Pros, and while they connect via bluetooth to my computer they're not doing so using an AAC codec and the latency is unbearable for me to use it for either movies or games.

Is there anyway to get an AAC Supported Bluetooth device to connect to a Windows 10 computer using The AAC codec? Either through hardware upgrades or a specific dongle? I cannot find anyway or anything to buy to make this work.

Only some of my programs are outputting audio.

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 12:43 PM PST

This all started last night when my friend connected to my computer via steam link. Once he did that, I noticed that my computer had no audio. I didn't mind at the time so when I was done I shut off my pc and went to sleep.

Fast foward to now, I turn on my pc, and there's no sound, at least through my main monitor. My other monitor, however works fine. My issue is that I connect my headphones directly to my monitor and my 2nd monitor does not have the ports required. I did notice, that some test sounds did work. I have a video of me demonstrating this here. Something else I noticed is that windows is detecting Nvidia High Definition Audio (the audio passthrough I use through my displayport cable) so that is probably attributing to my issue, I just don't know how to fix it. Any help is appreciated, or if there is a better subreddit for this let me know.

For Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2:

    • Updates time zone information for Norfolk Island, Australia.

    • Addresses an issue with a race condition between the volume mount process (within fileinfo.sys) and the deregistration of filter notifications that causes the operating system to stop working on certain virtual machines. The error code is "0x7E."
    • Addresses an issue in security bulletin CVE-2019-1318 that may cause client or server computers that don't support Extended Master Secret (EMS) RFC 7627 to have increased connection latency and CPU utilization. This issue occurs while performing full Transport Layer Security (TLS) handshakes from devices that don't support EMS, especially on servers. EMS support has been available for all the supported versions of Windows since calendar year 2015 and is being incrementally enforced by the installation of the October 8, 2019 and later monthly updates.
    • Addresses an issue that prevents a 16-bit Visual Basic 3 (VB3) application or other VB3 applications from running.

    • Addresses an issue that causes error 0x7E when you connect Bluetooth devices after installing the June 11, 2019 update.
    • Provides protections against the Intel® Processor Machine Check Error vulnerability (CVE-2018-12207). Use the registry setting as described in the Guidance KB article. (This registry setting is disabled by default.)
    • Provides protections against the Intel® Transactional Synchronization Extensions (Intel® TSX) Transaction Asynchronous Abort vulnerability (CVE-2019-11135). Use the registry settings as described in the Windows Client and Windows Server articles. (These registry settings are enabled by default for Windows Client OS editions, but disabled by default for Windows Server OS editions.)
    • Addresses an issue with temporary user profiles in an environment in which user profile disks (UPD) are deployed and cached roaming profiles are not deleted when the "Delete cached copies of roaming profiles" policy is enabled.
    • Security updates to Microsoft Scripting Engine, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Graphics Component, Windows Input and Composition, Windows Cryptography, Windows Virtualization, Windows Kernel, Windows Datacenter Networking, and the Microsoft JET Database Engine.

I don't have any problem with that, but I'm just curious.

Best Remote Desktop replacement which copes with multiple client monitors

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 07:29 AM PST

I'm currently using Remote Desktop to remote in from my home computer (Windows 10) with 2 monitors to my Windows 10 work laptop (1 screen, obviously). This works very well usually - I get two fullscreen desktops on my client computer just as if I plugged two monitors into my laptop via a docking station. However, the setup is a bit flakey with the connection occasionally hanging or slowing seriously which requires a re-connect and destroys my window layout. Is there a replacement for remote desktop which can span my client monitors? NoMachine doesn't seem to, nor teamviewer or VNC (that I can see).

    Windows 1903

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 04:54 AM PST

So I'm having this problem trying to update my laptop from 1803 to 1903, I've been having this problem for awhile but basically , while it's installing it makes it up to 48% , than an error pops up that's too quick to read and than my laptop proceeds to shut down. When I turn it back on it says "undoing changes made to computer" (or something along those lines). I have enough storage and have tried installing it with and without wifi. No article online has helped me fix my problem. Should I try fully resetting my laptop?
