    Simple Questions - December 11, 2019

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 04:11 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Please don't bottleneck your computer with a bad monitor

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 08:00 AM PST

A little over a year ago I build a pretty powerful computer. Ryzen 5 2600X at 4.05Ghz OC, GTX 1080, 16GB of 3,600Mhz RAM, and a 1TB M.2 SSD. I've been quite happy with it, and I get great performance. I was planning on upgrading my monitor too, but I kept putting it off because my 1080p 60hz monitor was "good enough". Well I just recently got a 1440p 165hz G-Sync monitor, and it is fantastic. Everything looks amazing, and it's super smooth. I definitely wish I had gotten that monitor sooner!

    Should I get a 1070ti at this late 2019?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 11:01 AM PST

So I'm currently running a 1060 6GB, and I have seen a good deal on a Palit Jetstream 1070ti recently, second hand but with warranty. Is this worth the upgrade? If so, is this a good manufacturer?

    Thank you!

2TB NVMe drives with high endurance (>1000 TBW)?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 02:19 PM PST

I do a lot of video file transfers and want a high endurance NVMe SSD. I know I should stay away from QLC, and inexpensive options like the Intel 660p have quite low endurance. Any suggestions?

Looking for a backpack sized case to build a uni commuting pc in

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 03:10 PM PST

I'm currently running a standard atx tower at home however with the prospect of university coming up I'd like a build to slog back and forth to uni with every 3 months or so.

Preferably a sub £1000 build so a small case on the cheapish As small as possible really but with GPU support (small obv)

So far trying to find anything has been a headache and I was wondering if anyone has attempted anything like this before?

Any suggestions for my first build?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 10:21 AM PST

I'm going to be ordering parts soon, but just want to double check everything. I'm mainly going to be video editing. Not professional, but I have a drone and a couple gopros that shoot 4k. I will also be doing some gaming, but mostly just editing. I am completely clueless about PC building in general, and don't even really know what overclocking is, so it's unlikely I'll be doing it.

My budget is about $1000-$1200 give or take. I really like the looks and size of the case I chose, but I'd be willing to get a mid level case of it means a far better system for close to the same price.

Looking to build my FIRST pc ever and.......i need a little help :)

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 01:19 PM PST

So I have been rocking this laptop since 2017 and it works great because I travel for work a lot and needed a good gaming laptop to game on when it my hotel. But now I'm home and would like a desktop so I can game/stream/edit videos so I don't have to keep using my small laptop. The thing is that I want the same performance, if not better than this pc so i can do all these things.

    Laptop Specs:

    • Razer Blade 2017 14" V6
    • intel i7-7700hq @ 2.80GHz
    • DDR4 16GB
    • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060

Now, I want something that I can play game/stream/edit videos on something with these specs or better if need be. I would like to connect to 2 144Hz monitor. I need help picking all the right parts so they are compatible.

I have seen a lot of builds that recommend the a ryzen 5 chipset but I thought that would be going backwards compared to what I currently have. I have been racking my brain on going with team red(ryzen) or team blue(Intel). I hear I don't need more than 12GB of ram for gaming but what about when I edit videos? Can/should I upgrade to 32GB now or in the future? I feel like if I can at least know which CPU to choose the rest will come easy. Should I use m.2 for memory to save space and for speed?

Can it NOT sound like my laptop which sounds like its taking off to space on the next spacex launch? Gets loud when gaming and sucks for streaming with the laptop right near my mic.

Can you guys help me build a future proof desktop that won't go over the cost of this laptop from when I first purchased it. Any and all help would be appreciated!

My budget is $2,000, This would be a complete build and I have no monitors so those suggestions would be great as well.

Bought this PC. What do I need?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 02:24 PM PST

(First off apologies for asking with help on a prebuilt on a build a pc subreddit but I'm really looking for experienced pc people to help me out.)

    https://www.overclockers.co.uk/ocuk-gaming-ignition-if6-intel-9400f-six-core-rtx-2060-super-next-day-gaming-pc-fs-1cm-ep.html

So I've just purchased this pc upon multiple recommendations and I'm looking for some tips before it arrives

Firstly, Do I need to buy any pc parts separately? (Portable HD SSD, CPU cooler etc.)

I'm planning on buying a monitor Will this pc run 1440p on high frames I'm inexperienced when it comes to monitors but I've heard that I should get a certain type of cable to get max hertz Can anyone recommend me a gaming monitor (27+ inch 144hz and 1440p if the pc allows it)

And is there anything this pc is lacking that i should look out for ?

Thanks for all help in advance;)

    Build Critique / GPU Suggestions

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 11:22 AM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Primarily playing games - Witcher 3 (modded), Skyrim (modded), Halo, Cyberpunk, Tomb Raider, other AAA games.
I will also use it to log in to work remotely via Remote Desktop Connection with 3-4 monitors - I am currently using four 24" 1080p monitors. When gaming I will only be using 1-2 monitors with the others disconnected.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

    1080p, 144hz, high detail

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Shooting for $1,100 max. I have purchased all of the parts except the GPU (can spend max of about $400). I do not need to spend it all if it is not necessary.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

US - will have access to Microcenter when I am visiting my parents in the last week of December.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

This is my first build. I've purchased all of the components for the build except for the GPU. Nothing has been opened and everything is still within the return window. I'm looking for a critique of the parts I've purchased and suggestions for a GPU. I'm torn between buying an EVGA GTX 1660 Super for about $230, a Powercolor Red Dragon/Sapphire Pulse RX 5700 for about $340-360, or a Powercolor/Sapphire RX 5700 XT for about $400-430. I'm currently thinking that I'll go with the 1660 Super and then upgrade to an RX 5700 XT (hopefully at a lower price point) when the next round of GPU's are released. I'm also hesitant to go AMD due to the software issues as this is my first build. Hopefully this is enough information and I got the formatting correct. Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions!

NOTE: You do not have to follow this format, but please be sure to answer these questions. Please do not ask to simply be given a build. You are welcome to delete this section.

    Help with monitor

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 01:41 PM PST

    I bought a 1440p, 144hz monitor but on the menu it says 1440p, 60hz

    https://m.imgur.com/a/SPX1mnN

I'm not sure if I was sent a different monitor than the one I ordered or am I missing something. I can get it over 60hz if I take the v-sync off in the game settings.

    Will this work well?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 01:08 PM PST

First I would like to say thank you for clicking on this post.

I will be using this PC for mostly gaming and light word processing (just for uni and stuff). I want to play games such as Rocket League, Hitman 2, Overwatch, Borderlands 3, PvZ BFN and other similar games. I would like to be able to play these at 1440p 144 Fps (I know some such as Borderlands will never get to that but it is my aim for most games).

I share a room and so it is important for me that it is very quiet so I have tried to build that into my budget and maxing out the ones I can get). My total budget is £1500 and that includes everything in the part list which is here.

Thank you to all those that reply and if you have any questions feel free to leave them below! Thanks!

    First Pc Build and Setup

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 02:45 PM PST

Hi! This is my first pc build and I wanted to know if you had any recommendations for the following build. I will be using it for editing videos and pictures with a little bit of fps gaming (r6, COD, Destiney, Halo, etc.) on the side. I will be gaming at 1440p 144hz on medium-max settings. My max budget is $1350 for the entire setup (excluding the mouse). Do not worry about including an O.S. And edited part prices are what they retail for at micro center. Thanks!

One more question: Has AMD fixed their 5700 drivers? IF not I might get an rtx 2060 instead.

Not sure how to go about upgrading my pc.

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 02:42 PM PST

Back in 2017 I purchased a pre-built pc that had a GTX 1060 3gb, intel i5-7400, 8gb of RAM, and a 1tb HDD. Since then I have upgraded to 16gb of RAM and moved the OS to a 500gb SSD. The monitor I have currently been using has been a 60hz 1080p but I will be upgrading soon to a 144hz 1080p monitor soon and plan on using both monitors simultaneously. I don't think my GPU will be able to handle 144hz on most games so I have debated whether I should upgrade my GPU. The problem I have with that is then I feel like my CPU will become a bottleneck. I'm wondering if there's a GPU out there I could purchase that would work fine with my CPU for 144hz. I'm wondering whether I should keep upgrading my current system or start a new one. Price wise i'm looking for the best deal for solid 144hz gaming.

Computer won't boot with new GPU installed. Help!

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 12:08 PM PST

Hey folks! I hope someone can shed some light on what I should be doing here...

My PSU died (or, my computer stopped turning on and I assumed it was because my PSU died) about a year ago. I installed a new PSU and my computer turned on and everything worked again with HDMI plugged straight into mobo, but I would just get a black screen when the HDMI was plugged into my graphics card. My mobo bios wouldn't even recognize that the GPU was installed. I figured, shoot, the PSU probably took my GPU out with it. I borrowed a friend's GPU and it worked just fine, so I thought for sure it was my GPU that was the problem. I wasn't playing any games at the time, so I just used my mobo graphics until I felt like upgrading my GPU. That time is now.

Last night I picked up a brand new 5700 XT. This thing is beautiful. I installed it, making sure everything was plugged in and seated properly. I kept the HDMI plugged into my mobo because I wasn't sure if there would be drivers I'd need to install before the GPU would work. I turned it on, heard a beep, but the screen stayed black. The lights and fans on the GPU were on. I thought ok, maybe it's booting from the GPU graphics (like my BIOS is telling it to do), so I plugged the HDMI into the GPU. Still nothing. I re-seated the GPU and tried again - still a black screen and now, no beep. I uninstalled the GPU (which was very hot from just being plugged in a short time - is that normal?) and plugged the HDMI back into the mobo (the way I'd been using my PC for the last year). Luckily, this configuration still boots.

So, something is up. I'm not sure whether it's my mobo, my relatively new PSU, my brand new GPU, or something else entirely. What would your next step be in this situation to determine the culprit? I have a friend bringing his new rig over tonight, so I'll have another PC to test parts with. I don't want to accidentally fry anything though - that's my biggest fear!

Thanks for any help you can give me!
