Proving the internet connection we pay for is TRASH!

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 03:22 PM PST

    Hi everyone!

First off, apologies for any poor formatting, terrible explanations etc. I'm terrible at these sorts of things!

We have had a 20 month long argument with our ISP regarding our internet dropping countless times a day, they say it is due to us maxing our connection upstream, we say it's not because it still happens when we are not using the internet.

This is a real problem for us as without the internet we have absolutely no cell service, like cannot even call 111 no cell service (we live in NZ)

I am looking for an app, or something easy to use (I'm not great at this stuff) to show the internet IS in fact dropping out, even when it is not in use.

Can someone please help me, this is driving us absolutely insane, and we will have to move ASAP if this isn't sorted as we run a home business, which is impossible with no internet or cell service.

    Thanks in advance!

Odd way to get disconnected from Wi-Fi

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 11:03 AM PST

I was watching some YouTube when suddenly another tab opened with the address being (My ip address)/ppoe_disconnect_t.lp, then lost connection. Can anyone explain to me what this means? And if I posted this on the right sub?

    Thanks in advance!

Preparing For Cable Management For A/V Network

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 03:21 PM PST

In 5 days I have plaster / drywall guys coming to close all this stuff up and I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to make the cable management easier for my A/V network. Here is a photo of the rough cabling. There is a lot going on in this photo, but I have HDMI cables running from 4 TVs (one with redundant cables) plus about a dozen CAT6A cables and about 24 speaker wires. It's broken into three low voltage boxes. There will be drywall on both sides of the wall. Is there anything I can do now that will make organizing easier later?

As background, I'm finishing my basement and it will have a home theater and a few TVs plus networking equipment. Here are the original plans.

    Thank you so much!

Is it ok to buy 802.11ax router now?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 07:40 PM PST

I don't have router at the moment and looking to buy a router

(current 1 is provided by isp rent n thinking of changing isp)

Is it ok to buy 802.11ax router now?

search on reddit shows lots of ppl say 'wait, it's beta product' but those posts are 1 yr old

    The one I'm looking at is TP-Link Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 (Archer AX50)

price difference isn't too big vs ac1750 (30-50 bucks) and ax3000 price is about the same as ac2000+ routers

or should I get cheap ac router which is 1/3 the price of ax (ac1200) n then get ax router later?

    UDM or other router options...

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 06:27 PM PST

    I had previously a crappy DSL connection 10/1 ...

Since it was a quite limited connection for a household I got a hold of ubiquiti USG / switch (netgear) / 2 AP 2.5 years ago; which worked pretty good managing our lacking bandwidth with smart queues plus the AP's has been a rock solid providing great coverage to the whole house.

Second I have a second ISP connection that previously was using it as load balance ; I want to keep it as failover given its a new ISP and I depend on a reliable internet connection for remote work.

From UBNT ; I really liked how simple its to setup the wireless networks, users, wifi schedules and DPI is somewhat useful to see where the bandwidth is going and by whom... (specially monitoring kids)

I upgraded recently to 100/20 and it seems I cannot fully utilize the connection with the USG if Smart Queues are enabled ; which tremendously helped in the past with buffer bloat and video conference calls. Havent got yet a problem since the change of speed is recent probably they have not noticed it...

Kids are usually streaming / playing online games and wife is watching something which is always a stream ; so I feel as soon they get used to the new speed I will need some kind of QoS.... which USG cannot provide anymore given I get tops 50MB download with smart queues enabled ; so I have it disabled it for now in order to have access to the full 100MB.

I'm pondering on replacing the USG / AP solution with the new UDM that its faster and would be more than enough for my connection and any future speed upgrades in the short / medium term the only thing missing would be wifi 6 that would require a new AP ; one gripe that I have with UDM it doesnt have support for fail over or load balance since it has only 1 WAN port ..

The UDM is $299 + tax ; I was just wondering if there are other options I could explore in that price range...

The house is around 2400 sqft ; split in two floors with concrete walls on most of the house.

    thanks

Need advice choosing a router for home

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 03:43 PM PST

I live in a two bedroom single level duplex. My home internet is through nighthawk m1 LTE router. While it provides me sufficient speed, its WiFi range is very short. The 5ghz wifi signal doesn't travel from living room to the bedrooms and while 2.4ghz barely reaches the bedrooms across walls, the speed is reduced considerably. I don't need a heavy duty router because my internet is not a gbps connection. The maximum I get from LTE router is 50mbps down on 5ghz band and 25mbps on 2.4ghz respectively. I don't have many devices connected. Just a Chromecast, a printer, two smartphones and 2 laptops. Which 802.11ac router is right for me to cover my entire single level house with good speeds across walls ? I am looking for a cheap router that does the job and provides me with even speed throughout my home.

Best mesh network for 1GB per second speed?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 12:43 PM PST

I am upgrading to 1GB per second speed and am needing to upgrade my wifi system in order to accommodate the speed increase.

My computer is across the way from my house so i will need a mesh system to make sure there's more than enough coverage throughout the home while still running an Ethernet cable out of one of the pods.

Any help or recommendations is appreciated, thanks.

How realistic is it for AT&T Fiber to make it to my house?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 06:41 PM PST

I'm sure most of you know more than me regarding the requirements for internet service, specifically fiber in this case, to be extended. We currently have Xfinity 1000 mbps wifi, and it has been very seriously experiencing issues that seem to stem from somewhere in their network. We have frequent outages in our home even though our router works just fine, and we buy very good service that previously worked very well. AT&T Fiber is widely offered in our area, and we desperately want to switch for better service and to stop supporting Comcast (not like AT&T is entirely less sketchy, but promoting competition kind of thing).

Based on service maps I've found, in every direction around our small neighborhood block, AT&T fiber is offered. Across the street from us, it is offered, for example. I have called AT&T but of course only reached customer service who wasn't able to offer me any help with contacting someone about having fiber moved to our house. Is there anything that can be done about this? Do I have to wait for the possible self-motivated move of fiber onto our block?

Edit: There is apparently another 1000 Mbps fiber offering across the street, United Communications Holdings LLC. Not sure exactly what that is or anything though.

Moving into an apartment with existing fiber. What should I do to protect my privacy?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 06:40 PM PST

So I'm moving into an apartment complex with fiber installed throughout the building. It isn't shared wifi, there are several ethernet/coax outlets in my unit to hook directly up to or hook a router of my choice up to for wifi. It's already set up and to connect physically I would simply have to plug into any of the ethernet wall ports.

My question is if I should be worried about this shared service and if there's something I should be doing differently to ensure my privacy/data protection. I know it's a silly question but I haven't experienced internet of this kind before and just want to be sure.

I have a netgear r7000 hooked up to it currently as well as a VPN (PIA), any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Gigabit fiber. Do I need a stronger router, use the provided router + my old one, or something else entirely?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 10:53 PM PST

EDIT 3: I plugged my bedroom router directly into the ethernet wall port. I then took an old laptop and connected it to the corresponding cable downstairs in the security panel and hit 400/872mbps. It's my wife's old macbook from like 15 years ago so that's probably why the direct line is so low. Either way, looks like the house is already wired, hoorah!

Do I still need anything other than a Gigabit POE switch to connect the rest of the cat5e in the security panel? If I plug them all into the switch then all the wall ports should work just fine as a plug and play, right?

EDIT 2: I think my house is actually already prewired for a security system the previous owner used. Please look at the album here.

I think these are cat5e lines but would like some confirmation. The writing on the cables say "CMR OR MPR 5E 350mhz to TIA". From what I understand Cat5e is rated for 100mhz so this is fine, right?

If this is the case, I should be able to get an ethernet switch and plug panel and set them up where the security panel is now. Connect the ONT to my router --> router to ethernet port in bedroom. From here on, all other ethernet ports will be connected and I can run a direct line from the port in the office to the workstation?

I'll then be able to use the other spare router as a wired access point from the ethernet port in the kitchen to give the other side of the house stronger wifi access as well. Is my assumption correct, can I start jumping with joy and order the switch and panel? Any recommendations? Looks like I don't need more than 6 ports.

EDIT 1: I just noticed that I have an Ethernet plug in my bedroom and in my kitchen. Originally thought they were phone lines. How likely do you think it's all already wired together? I'm heading to work now and will be able to check when I get back.

Hello, I apologize in advance if this question is stupid. I've read the pinned post guidelines, went down the rabbit hole and am more confused than ever.

    Equipment/Devices:

    • CenturyLink provided a ZyXel C3000Z
    • Asus RT-68u flashed to Merlin
    • (2) Smart TV's
    • (2) Laptops
    • (2) wifi connected workstations
    • (2) phones
    • Tablet
    • Xbox

(At any given moment, the max devices in use are 4)

    Background Details:

I just switched to CenturyLink gigabit fiber service. Because I live in a 1600sqft townhome which is a middle unit, the only place to run the fiber was into my upstairs bedroom.

About 30 feet away and one floor down is my home office. I have a workstation with an integrated 802.11ac wifi adapter on the x399 taichi motherboard. I receive weak to medium signal strength and hit speeds of 25/25 here.

Issue: Running ethernet from the C3000Z to a laptop gives me roughly 900mbps speed. Connecting through wifi on multiple devices while standing next to this router provides 200-300mbps. Going into the kitchen about 25ft away cuts this speed down to under 100mbps. My workstation downstairs hits under 30Mbps. Switching out the C3000Z for my Asus RT-68u gives similar speeds.

Goal: I'd like to hit 150mbps+ on my downstairs workstation via wifi. Ideally would want to get the highest speed possible given the situation but 150mbps+ will be ok good enough. Running direct ethernet is currently not an option.

    Questions:

    1. Should I buy a new and more capable router?

    2. Would it make sense to combine the c3000z and rt-68u and make one a repeater? I can't turn one into an access point as the wife won't let me run the line to connect them.

    3. Are there any other options? I looked into the Ubiquiti systems that are recommended here but uncertain if this is the ideal solution.

I don't have a fixed but would ideally not spend more than $300.

Want to get started with DMZ

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 05:55 PM PST

    Hello,

I have a cable modem/router provided by my internet provider and all my computers that connect to the router get a 10.0.0.X address.

Within the router, there is a page that allows for the configuration of a DMZ. On that DMZ page, I can enter an IPV4 or IPV6 address.

I would like to practice administrating a server that is exposed to the public internet.

Thus, my question is if I take my spare laptop which will get a ip address like 10.0.0.200 from my router and put that address on the DMZ page, will my spare laptop be exposed to the public internet?

If my spare laptop gets compromised are any of the other computers within my home network at risk?

    Thanks

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 05:54 PM PST

I'm about to but my first internet plan and I need a modem. The internet provider "TekSavvy" is recommending me to choose between those two:

    - 100$ Technicolor TC4350 https://www.gentek.com/resellers/specs/TNTC4350VDN.pdf

    - 140$ Technicolor TC4400 https://www.go2mhz.com/specimages/Technicolor/TC4400_EXT_v02_MHz_9-16.pdf

I'll be the only one using internet and ill have a 30mbps speed.

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 05:45 PM PST

Hi guys, I have a NetComm Wireless router but it keeps cutting out. I have looked at the 2 adapters that are connected and the one connected with ethernet also drops its ethernet light at the same time as the router drops. Before it loses connection it stays on for a couple seconds winth all lights lit.

It's almost like the wifi keeps resetting itself, I'm not sure what to do.

    R6300v2 Router Port Forwarding Issues

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 05:38 PM PST

So I am basically just trying to access my server from outside my home network. Can't find a single port that is open. They are all blocked. I called cox, and they said there was nothing they could do but send me to Netgear support. All Netgear did was 'register' my router and try to get me to pay $50+ for support. All I want to do is be able to access my Linux server from outside my home. I just spent over an hour on phones with cox and netgear and got nowhere.

Could someone please help me troubleshoot this a little? Or at least help me figure out what's wrong? Do I just need a router upgrade? It's getting frustrating. I'm not understanding why every single port I try is blocked and clearly my ISP is of no help, so I decided to ask you awesome people. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

AP loses internet connectivity to Router

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 10:40 AM PST

I'm using an AC86U as an AP to a FiOS Quantum Gateway. For about a month this setup has been rock solid but the last two days I've noticed my wireless clients are unable to reach the internet or the router IP (but can connect to the AP IP). A reboot of the AP fixed the problem for a day, but then it returned. Is my AP defective or is there something more benign happening? My AP is given a static address in my network outside the normal DCHP range (which I shrunk on the quantum gateway).

Any rack equipment deeper than 30 inches?

Hi all — Do you know of any rack equipment that is deeper than 30 inches? I'm mapping out the size of a network closet.

So far I've seen servers as deep as 29 inches. UPSes in the 20-ish range, same for NASes, switches maybe 14.5 inches, routers around 5 inches.

    Thanks.

Laptop keeps dropping internet connection and has slower speeds compared to other devices on home WiFi, but works fine on other WiFi networks.

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 08:54 AM PST

Hi, I posted a similar problem here about a year ago, while the help I received then was greatly appreciated, I have yet to find a solution to my problem.

I am living in the UK and I have an ASUS Zenbook UX303UA and am on virgin media WiFi at home. I should be easily getting speeds above 120Mbps (I think we have the 200Mbps package and its fibre optic). To be honest, we are meant to average 213Mbps on any device for the 5G connection, but that's a different issue that I figured was because I think (I'm not sure), that the wiring in my house is copper, so even though we have fibre optic, the very last part is still copper.

Anyway, my download speeds on my laptop are only reaching 30Mbps right now (just did a speed test from the ookla website Download:31.61Mbps, Upload:17.71Mbps, Ping:7) (on 2G the speeds are Download: 14.98Mbps, Upload: 16.76Mbps and Ping:11). But it can be anywhere from 8-30Mbps whereas my phone (Galaxy S9+) will easily get anywhere from 130-180Mbps. My brothers computer also gets speeds above 100Mbps. Another thing to note is that the only other device apart from my laptop that won't reach 100+ speeds is my PS4 Pro.

Another major issue is that while I am connected to the 5G network, suddenly the yellow exclamation mark on the wifi icon will pop up and then suddenly I will no longer be connected to the network at all, sometimes the 5G network completely disappears from the list and won't show until a couple of minutes have passed. I have to go back and reconnect about 3-5 times before it is stable again. This happens multiple times throughout the day. This problem is also seen on my PS4 where the 5G connection will drop and I would have to do a network test (since that disconnects and then reconnects to the network) where I'll get about half an hour to an hours worth of playtime until I'll have to do the same thing again. I've ended up just abandoning the 5G network altogether and just gaming on the 2G network, or my original PS4 (which can only connect to 2G), since the 5G connection really ruins online gaming now. This connection cutting out problem is not seen on any other device in the house, or on the 2G network.

Any other WiFi network, like my friends house (who has the exact same network package as me) or my uni campus WiFi (eduroam) works perfectly fine. It's only my home network where it doesn't play nice with my laptop. We do have some TP-links dotted around the house. The ones currently plugged into the sockets are ethernet adapters only (model number TL-PA211). We do have a wifi extender from TP-Link but that has not been plugged in for a while now.

Another thing to note is that when I hover over my wifi icon, it shows the name as [SSID] 2. Also we are using the router provided by Virgin Media (Virgin Super Hub 3.0).

Any help in getting my laptop to work properly on my home WiFi would be greatly appreciated!

    Moca adapter on fios

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 04:16 PM PST

firstly I apologize because I'm new to home networking. So I wanted to get an Ethernet connection to another part of my home. After some research Moca seemed to be the way to go. I am trying to do a Moca 2.0 bonded using a Motorola adapter, however, I can't seem to get it to work. I've connected it as instructed one near my router and the other at the destination.

My issue is that the adapter near my router shows itself as being "linked" but the one at the destination does not. I think my issue is that my FiOS router also has Moca but the older version that has higher latency not the 2.0 bonded one. How do I disable it's Moca capability?

Or am I completely wrong and the issue is something else.

Verizon FioS looking to use my own Modem/Router and found this

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 11:52 AM PST

I currently have FioS internet and they issued the quantum gateway router/modems. We have 1 on the main level and 1 on the upper level of our home. I'd like to use my own soon and was told I would have to switch over to MoCA.

I was browsing through my current FioS gateway router and noticed this. https://i.imgur.com/Z1tl9kI.png

Does this mean I am already setup to use my own router? I'd like to setup the Amplify HD system by Ubiquiti.

Any help on this process would be great. Anyone with FioS who has already gone through this that can share their experiences using your own equipment? Advantages and disadvantages?

UPS for home network closet worth it?

    Basic home wiring

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 03:04 PM PST

Hello everyone, first time poster here. I'm a software engineer and have some very limited networking experience, but I consider myself a novice when it comes to networking.

My wife and I are in the process of building our first home (really just a new construction, but we do get to make some decisions, mostly stylistic), and I asked the builder about wiring up some Ethernet cables to each room. It turns out they already include CAT-5 for up to 5 wall points (not sure what these are actually called, the "outlet" but for network cables). I got him to upgrade the cable to either CAT-5e or CAT-6 as we should have fiber internet.

For now, I am running a Ubiquiti AmpliFi HD with two wireless mesh points. I am hoping to stick with Google Fiber which we have now and love, but we may end up having to go with AT&T fiber if google is not available. Right now, I am running the router in bridge mode connected to the google box with the WiFi turned off, but whether we go with google or AT&T I would love to eliminate their equipment altogether, and as I understand it, I would need some sort of an Ethernet switch with a firewall in order to accomplish that?

So my first question is what do I need to purchase to be able to get rid of the google box and/or AT&T box, and are there any good (reliable) options at a low price, as I likely won't be going too crazy adding tons of Ethernet connections at any point in the near future.

My second (and more important) question is how/where should I have the electrician run the Ethernet cables from each room to? I asked the builder and he seemed to think they normally drop them outside on the side of the house near the breaker and internet stuff, but I thought it would make more sense to have the cables run from each of the 5 rooms, to a central location like the basement where I could then plug them all into my router (or an Ethernet switch). What type of setup would I ideally be looking for here? What are some questions I should ask? In my head I'm picturing each room having a single Ethernet port wall point, and then a larger wall point in the basement with 4-6 ports that each room would be connected to, and then from there I could wire everything up in the basement. I know one common recommendation around here is to run more than one cable to each room while you're in there, but I'm not as concerned with that for now, and I wouldn't mind adding additional switches to the rooms on the off chance I ever needed more than one Ethernet port in a given room.

TIA for any advice, and let me know if I can be more specific on something.

Tl;dr: Where/how should I have the Ethernet points drop to from each room in my house, and what device do I need to be able to get rid of my Google fiber box and be able to use my router not in bridge mode?

Linksys wusb6300 | Slow speed test. fast device speed.

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 02:58 PM PST

    Hey there.

Hoping to get some more information on this weird issue I'm having with my wusb6300. I have gigabit internet with a netgear C1000 modem and a tp-link Archer C3150 V2 router. On my 2017 Macbook pro I am able to get around 700mbps on fast.com right where the wusb6300 is plugged into my gaming pc.

In the devices status I am getting 500-600mbps but when I test on speedtest.net or fast.com I'm only getting 110mbps firm. Seems like it is being capped somehow.

Just looking for a little bit more information on why this would be.

    Thank you!
