This seems like it should be so simple ... an alarm (or reminder) that just goes ding?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 05:27 AM PST

I'm looking for an app that I can set to ring/beep/buzz at a certain time, but that I do not have to shut off like I would with a typical alarm.

So if I'm trying to remember to drink more water, for example, I could set it to just ding at 1:00, 3:00, etc. Or if I'm working and I just want to be aware of how much time has passed, I could set it to ding every 30 minutes. Things like that.

I feel like this MUST be an option on the alarm & reminder apps that I already have ... and maybe I'm just not seeing it?? Please enlighten me!

Tasker 5.9 starts to roll out

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 05:47 PM PST

    Long Standing Bugs Fixed

I've fixed 2 very old bugs:

    • sometimes a task would hang if another task was running at the same time and a wait action was running there
    • when you monitored the value of %LIGHT and the light level sank to 0, %LIGHT would never actually be 0 but would remain in the value previous to 0

I'm happy to say that these are both fixed now! :)

    Full Changelog

    • Added "Logcat Entry" event which allows you to react to any logcat on your Android system
    • Added "Shortcut" action which allows you to open an Android shortcut from Tasker
    • Added "ShortcutDialog()" function in "Tasker Functions" action that allows you to pick a shortcut so that you can run it later
    • Added option in "Get Location v2" to get last available location if action times out. This way you can at least still get a decent location even if it doesn't match your criteria
    • Added ability to long click a variable in the Variable select list to show its value
    • Added ability to specify a directory as the output for a HTTP Request action so that the file name is automatically recognized and set when downloaded
    • Added %http_file_output variable as output in the HTTP Request action so that you can act on the downloaded file more easily when the file name is automatically found by Tasker
    • Changed "Get Location 2" name to "Get Location v2"
    • Changed all prefixes for the variables from "Get Location v2" to "gl" instead of "cl"
    • Changed some variable names for both "Get Location v2" and "Pick Location"
    • Changed some messages that show up as toasts into dialogs so that people that block Tasker notifications still see them.
    • Fixed long-standing bug (from back when I wasn't the developer) that would sometimes hang a task if another task had a wait action running
    • Fixed long-standing bug (from back when I wasn't the developer) where if you monitored the value of %LIGHT and the light level sank to 0, %LIGHT would never actually be 0 but would remain in the value previous to 0.
    • Fixed some issues where changes in Light could adversely make some profiles stop working
    • Allow scenes to manually specify horizontal offsets higher than normally supported
    • Added Custom Settings for the Pixel 4
    • Changed Cell Near history to 24 hours instead of 6
    • Fixed bug where importing a project with disabled profiles would sometimes enable them
    • Fixed HTTP Request action when downloading a file to a folder that doesn't exist. Now creates needed folders automatically.
    • Made some events trigger faster with less use of resources
    • Fixed "Alarm Changed" event in some situations.
    • Fixed getting the clipboard on Android 10 in some situtations.
    • Correctly ask for Do Not Disturb changing permissions when adding the Ringer Volume action
    • Fixed small crashes

I hope you enjoy this one and do let me know what you can come up with with the new Logcat Entry Event! 😃

    Edit:

Just updated to beta.9 with a few fixes:

    • Made Load Last App available for everyone again! :)
    • Fixed issue where Tasker monitor would sometimes restart over and over again if Reliable Alarms was set
    • Tried fixing reporting next alarm changed
    • Moved "Shortcut" action to "App" category
    • Removed error toast when cancelling shortcut picking dialog
    • Fixed giving the app READ_LOGS permission automatically on rooted devices
    • Added ability to use regex filtering in Event "Logcat Entry" by adding ~R at the start of the filter (same as for every event)
    • Added option to filter by "Different Than" speed and altitude in "Get Location v2"
    • Fix not being able to accept the "Get Location" action if you checked "Continue Tracking"
    • Fix small crashes

    Finding consistent icon packs?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 07:07 AM PST

I've noticed as I'm browsing that it is incredibly difficult to find "consistent" icon packs. The two common issues I run into is that all of the silhouettes are different, like lines and moonrise, and the other issue is that not all apps have an icon with that pack, so it defaults to my system default, which is the Samsung one, and I'm not a huge fan of it.

I've found icon packs like Borealis and the iOS 11 one that are more boxy, and are nice and consistent. I had been using the Pixel Pie icon pack, which was mostly circles, but again, didn't support every app. It's very difficult to sort in the play store....impossible, actually. So the ones with high downloads, but only 4 stars instead of 4.8 show up first for me. How can I find the good ones?

    (Root)Enable dark mode whatsapp

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 08:19 AM PST

Note: I personally use solid explorer

    Grant permissions to access files

-Open File Manager and head over to the root partition. droid views Then go to Data > Data and navigate to the com.whatsapp folder.

Go to the shared_prefs folder and search for the com.whatsapp_preferences.xml file.

Now add the below lines to that xml file, anywhere inside the <map> and </map> tags. This one line of code is, in fact, responsible for enabling Dark Mode on WhatsApp on rooted Android devices.

    <boolean name="dark_mode" value="true" />

Next, tap on the floppy icon to save the file. Now just force close WhatsApp and re-open it.

Finally, head over to Settings. You could now see the Theme option, just beneath Account. Tap on it and select Dark.

    That's it !

Looking for an old App Cloner

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 09:51 AM PST

The app I used to have duplicated the installation files and install a second version of any app. It also provided a neat way to modify the icon for the duplicate.

I've been looking at app cloners for an hour on the play store, and so far, all of them clone apps, but you have to open the cloner to use them.

If this is confusing, let me put it this way: looking for a cloning app I can delete after I install my duplicate apps.

Looking for alternative to CallTrack app

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 07:53 AM PST

I've been using an app called CallTrack for a number of years to automatically add calendar entries for any inbound\outbound\missed calls but the app isn't working with my new phone and searching for the app it appears to have not been updated for sometime so I'm guessing the authors have given up on it

Can anyone recommend an alternative app?

I don't need anything fancy, just the automatic creation of a calendar entry with the number called\calling (and the contact info if known) and the duration of the call

    Alternatives to Gas Buddy?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 09:25 AM PST

I've been having issues with Gas Buddy in that they won't let me report gas prices at the cheapest gas station in my area. In fact it won't even list that the gas station has regular fuel or diesel. I have to scroll all the way down and click stations without regular. So I was wondering if there is an alternative app that may be more accurate.

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 08:57 AM PST

Location based reminder app with a strong alarm ?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 11:02 AM PST

Is there an app that , when i'm near a specific place(like a store), will remind me to do something ?

It's important that the alarm of this app to be strong(and not a lousy notification beep) , and for that sound to work well even if my earphones are connected and not inside my ears - that would be really ideal.

Is there something like that ?

    Bit of an Odd One

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 11:48 AM PST

Is there an app that connects to spotify that looks like an old ipod classic, with the scroll wheel and sounds. I just wanted to mess around with something like this and thought it'd make for some decent nostalgia.

Is this Mailwise security setting normal?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 11:15 AM PST

So I downloaded Mailwise off the google play store (the white color version) and tried setting up my university email using exchange.

Then it asked to give it permission to remotely control some security features of my Android device. The "Yes" choice says specifically "Activate this device admin app." Are these features normal or safe? They seem very invasive and confuse me:

    Erase all data:

Erase the phone's data without warning by performing a factory data reset.

    Set password rules

Control the length and the characters allowed in screen lock passwords and PINs

    Monitor screen unlock attempts

Monitor the number of incorrect passwords typed when unlocking the screen, and lock the phone or erase all the phone's data if too many incorrect passwords are typed.

    Lock the screen

Cntrol how and when the screen locks

    Set screen lock password expiration

Change how frequently the screen lock password, PIN, or pattern must be changed.

    Set storage encryption

Require that stored app data be encrypted

    Disable cameras

Prevent use of all device cameras

    Disable some screen lock features

Prevent use of some screen lock features

I would love if someone could help me understand what I'm allowing. Thanks!

Gibberish speech and the usual tv sfx but in a muffed state like it's playing in a very low volume or in the living room.

I live alone and I like to let the tv play in the background while doing things or sleeping but my old tv died on me this morning. Is there any app out there that does this?

[REQUEST] Calendar app / Contacts app that lets me save an appointment / contact to two different Calendars / adressbooks simultaneously.

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 02:41 AM PST

I have two different cloudbased solutions where I would like to save my calendar and contacts simultaneously. Every app I found so far just lets me save and synchronize my appointments / contacts to one entity. Is there any way I could save the same information to two different accounts without having to copy everything everytime? (I am not using google)

Question about apps in the background

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 03:56 PM PST

I recently switched phones to the bold N1, So now when I tab out to a different app and now come back to the first one it loses any memory of what I was doing. For example youtube videos go back to home and Crunchyroll goes back to listings and I have to close and reopen Chromecast just to use the controls again. Sorry if I'm explaining it bad but it's very annoying and Google isn't any help cause it shows me how to stop apps running in the background and not what I'm looking for. Any ideas how I can change this from happening?

Looking for another keyboard a couple of specific features

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 03:15 PM PST

Hello, there's a couple of features of SwiftKey that I really like and was wondering if any other keyboard app(s) have them:

    1. Manual first letter capitalization after the word is already started. What I mean is after starting typing a word (eg. Mississippi), and let's say the first letter wasn't capitalized, but I want it to be. With SwiftKey I can just press the shift button and it'll autocorrect the word to being capitalized

    2. A backspace/delete button that starts deleting words if held down. I don't like swiping the delete button, I can't quite master it to make it reliable. With SwiftKey, I can hold down the delete key and it'll start deleting characters as normal, the go faster and then start deleting whole words

    Thanks in advance
