Flying with a gaming laptop, charging it on the plane?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 02:01 PM PST

    Hey everyone,

I was wondering if there's any way I could charge my laptop on my united flight next week, I know the outlets support up to 75W and shut off with the regular 135W charger, but could I use, let's say... a universal laptop charger that runs at 65W without damaging the laptop?

    Exact model: PH315-51

    Thanks in advance!

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 09:16 AM PST

title. Laptop was turned off but plugged. I unplugged it instantly after spilling. It was regular water and pure lime juice in it, no sugar or any other substances. This also was spilled on midi controller ableton push 2 which was turned off and unplugged at the moment. Of course I didnt turn any of them on and left both devices at the repairs. Generally speaking am I screwed?

    Extending Laptop Battery ?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 12:21 PM PST

Hi. I wanna buy a new laptop and want to have the opportunity of gaming on it AND have a really big battery life. Please read on :

However I have looked (seriously) at every single brand and have looked at industry specs manuals on each and every model I could find to know exactly the characteristics of each model and especially the battery capacities. (Btw I find it scandalous that some brands don't even disclose them on their own website. Aren't there some laws that oblige them to ?).

Now, I know all about gaming/portability/longevity, and, PLEASE, am not here to have an neverending useless debate about it, but :

    1) No single gaming lineup provides big batteries in their model (understandably since gamers don't generally do WoW raids in the subway). Biggest I could find is new HP Omens with 70Wh (but they apparently still suffer from rather poor battery life.)

    2) On the other hand, I have found one Thinkpad to have a 91Wh one and this is the single biggest capacity I could find (I'd be glad if you know others with similar or even bigger ones !). Moreover, this was an option that said it would take the place of the second M.2 slot.

=> And that's why I thought "would it be possible to buy myself a huge battery and put it in a normal gaming laptop to FINALLY have the best of both worlds (yes I won't also ask for weight lol). Obvously would need to check the room, but out of all the competition there's gotta be some model that can right ? At least we can try !

I'm pretty familiar with spare parts and pc building now but I never touched pc batteries and my chemistry days are far away now and I know how this kinda stuff can be extremely sensitive. I wouldn't want to destroy my pc a day after receiving it but I believe we as a community can find ways to get what we want.

That is why I wanted to seriously ask some experts out here if they already have done that in the past and successfully or not. I'm interested in pretty much everything you can tell me but here are some question to get me going :

Are there some models like this thinkpad who are designed a way that makes it possible to have a bigger (physically) battery inside even if it blocks slots for non-necessary parts ?

Are there big capacity laptop batteries accessible to normal consumers ?

Do I need to know something about batteries ? Do they follow norms or is it more like laptop screens where you need to know exactly the reference because they all are different and wouldn't be compatible?

Is there some chemical reason that makes it so that a bigger capacity or more cells would damage a model that wasn't designed for it ?

Thanks a lot honestly if you can help me on this !!

Are there still framerate issues/choppiness using internal displays?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 11:55 AM PST

    Hey there,

I purchased a GS63VR a couple years ago (Nov 2017), and at the time, there was a known issue with framerate choppiness, specifically while using internal displays on Windows 10 gaming laptops. My understanding was that this issue was across the board for Windows 10 laptops, and not specific to brand/model. I believe it had something to do with how Windows 10 was prioritizing onboard graphics vs. dedicated graphics, and some poor interplay between the two. This only occurred on the internal display, as connecting to an external monitor was able to provide smooth framerates. At the time (Early 2018), there weren't any solid fixes.

I purchased a desktop a year ago, and have been primarily gaming on that this past year. However, some recent travel has caused me to pull out my laptop, and made me curious about any new updates or changes that might improve my experience.

Has this issue been fixed in more recent Windows 10 updates? Are there new settings that can be applied to correct it?

    My device:

    • MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-469
    • GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB GDDR5
    • Intel Core i7 6th Gen 6700HQ (2.60 GHz)
    • 16 GB Memory 1 TB HDD 128 GB M.2 SATA SSD
    • 15.6" Full HD 1920 x 1080
    • 14.96" x 9.80" x 0.69" 3.96 lbs.
    • 1 x Thunderbolt 3, 1 x Mini DisplayPort 1 x HDMI (4K @ 60HZ)
    • 3 x USB 3.0

Is the Legion Y540 worth 950 Euros?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 11:48 AM PST

I'm looking for a new laptop to buy. Looking for something that would last me the next 5 years or so, since my laptop with an I5-4200U and a GT740M is struggling hard.

I'm looking for a good gaming device, that would be decently future proofed.

The Y450 I've got my eyes on has:

    • Intel Core i5-9300H
    • GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB
    • 8 GB RAM
    • 256GB SSD

But, one of the most stand out features that I see, is the fact that it has a 144Hz display. I've never used anything over 60, so this really catches my eye.

Tho, 256GB is really little to me, and I need atleast 500GB. How hard ( or easy ) is it to upgrade to more store on this laptop? And how pricy would that be. Could I just add a 1TB hard drive to it? Or would I need to replace the existing SSD ( doesn't mention if it's an M.2 )

This comes out to being 950 euros total. This is like 300 euros out of my budget, which makes it REALLY hard to get. It's already on sale for that price, down from 1000 euros, so I can't wait for it to drop lower.

I really need to find more ways of convincing my parents of helping me buy this. I've already increased my budget from 400 to ~650 euro.

    Other laptops I've found were:

    • Y540 with an i5-9300H, GTX 1650 4GB, 8GB Ram and 1TB HDD + 128GB SSD. All for 900 Euro, but it's a 60Hz display.
    • L340 with an i5-9300H, GTX 1050 3GB, 8GB Ram 256 GB SSD. All this for 650 Euro on sale. Once again, the store problem.

And that's all I've found. The Nitro 5's here are mostly over 1000 euros, far out of reach.

Games I'm interested in playing: Modded Minecraft, Siege, CS:GO, Fortnite, Cities Skylines and I'm also interested in trying out some other more intensive games like Battlefield V and some other more recent games.

I'm looking for any other suggestions as well. Thanks.

Help me decide which one of these please

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 11:30 AM PST

Which laptop will be best for a Computer Science or Electrical Engineering Student, a Dell G7 7588 great specs low battery life of 4-5hrs on (general things like web surfing, YouTube and Office 365 in medium brightness & powersave mode) or an Acer Aspire 5 Slim with okay specs and excellent battery?

I’m trying to find a good gaming laptop. Does anyone have any recommendations? I want it to be able to run games in good quality while being able to run discord etc in the back. Minimum screen bleed and lightweight. I don’t really care as long as it’s a good gaming laptop. Thanks!

I have this laptop that a bought a while ago and it started doing this (probably after a drop, I don't remember). It's turning off when I press near the Enter button. I changed the wire connecting the screen to the board, but nothing changed. Anybody have a clue of what could cause this? Edit: link

    Broken Laptop

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 10:21 AM PST

    Hey r/laptops,

I recently broke my gaming laptop's hinge and wifi cable, along with basically the entire chassis when I dropped my computer. I'm a college student and I don't really game that often and mostly just use the laptop for it's power. I hear that gaming laptops are pretty expensive to repair and this one is two years old, if you were in my shoes would you repair it or buy another laptop? And if you did buy another laptop what are the best options for me? My budget would probably be $500-1000

Need help on Which one to choose

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 10:20 AM PST

So im getting a laptop for college in a few weeks. Ill be using it for some photo and video editing, casual gaming(mostly minecraft with shaders and pre 2015 games cus i had a shit pc and i got a lot of games to catch up on), CAD and maybe learn programming. So i narrowed it down to two laptops based on my budget. 1) Asus Vivobook X512DA (r5 3500U) -Asus Laptop X512DA-EJ503T R5-3500U/UMA/8G/512G PCIe/Peacock BLUE/15.6"FHD/1Y https://www.amazon.in/dp/B07W64Y19V/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_j9q8DbN5NP4GZ

    2) Acer swift 3( i5-8265u and mx250 2gb)

    https://www.flipkart.com/acer-swift-3-core-i5-8th-gen-8-gb-512-gb-ssd-windows-10-home-2-graphics-sf314-55g-thin-light-laptop/p/itmfhkkhgg2yvgzy

So heres where i need help deciding. 1.The asus has a ryzen which runs cooler(60-70°C as per youtube test videos) than the acer(70-80°C on both cpu and gpu) under similar loads like gta 5, fortnite etc. So does the higher temperature on the acer affect its performance in the long run?

    1. The gpu on the acer seems to be a 2gb mx250 which is fine but this laptop seem to have the 10 watt tdp variant. So does that mean the vega 8 is better than this particular mx250?

    2. The display on the asus seems to be looked down upon in a lot of amazon reviews though product description says it has a FHD antiglare ips panel and some say its not really colour accurate. The acer however got a really welcomed display and apparently got 99%sRGB rating. So is the display on the asus as bad they say and will that affect my photoshop requirements?

    3. Upgradability - the acer is pretty limited on this. The ram is soldered 8gb and there is no hdd addtion facility although it comes with a 512 gb ssd. But the asus can be upgraded to a great extent. So is the Acer's 8gb ram and 512gigs ssd enough for future proofing (5-6years... Until i have my own salary and ill be able to upgrade)?

Advice: keep old laptop&Update it, or go for a new one

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 03:46 AM PST

Hi, I don't know cr*p about tech. All I know is I have a probably 5 or 5+-year-old Acer Aspire V5, with intel core i7. And its been really slow, to the point where I am waiting solid 3-5 minutes for a word document to open. Although, it is running on the unoriginal windows 10 (with that nice activate your windows watermark at the bottom) version that I got down the street from some mobile-reselling shop. So should I try get an actual original windows version on my old laptop, or go for a new one? Problem is, my new one budget is probably below 600 pounds, so I'll probably end up with a hp Chromebook. Any help or advice would help, please! I need to write my thesis soon and working on this slow laptop is making it more difficult

    HP Sureview Technology

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 09:44 AM PST

Why aren't these recent HP Laptop reviewers disclosing that the Sureview reduces the brightness and clarity of their screens? I spent $70 to have the feature put on my Envy x360 build and the screen looks perpetually dirty with bright colors. It's an IPS yet the Viewing Angles are greatly reduced.

I know HP likes to charge an absurd repackaging fee but is there a way to argue that the quality of the product is subpar and return it?

Which Computer Will Be The Best?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 09:02 AM PST

My fiancee and I are looking to purchase a new laptop. Neither of us know a whole lot about computers so I figured I'd take this to the pros. I will be using this laptop for graphic design and photo editing, along with podcasting, youtubing and downloading music/photos. I've been looking at the macbook pro, the surface book and the surface pro...let me know what you think!!!

Must haves: -Speed!! I work with multiple applications at once so I need a laptop that can handle the workload without begging down. -Alot of memory -good graphics -USB ports (I have alot of jumpdrives)

If you can suggest two: What is going to be THE BEST laptop for all our needs (money not taken into account) and what is going to be the best bang for the buck.

    Thank you guys so much!!!
