Looking for a powerful programming laptop

Looking for a powerful programming laptop

Looking for a powerful programming laptop

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 10:54 PM PST

I need a light, durable powerful laptop for work. I do programming on a heavy IDE, run VMs, docker, open many tabs in a browser. So I would need 16GBs RAM, latest i7 and at least 512GB SSD. I was looking at lenovos, since they have a good reputation, but not sure which one to pick, or maybe another manufacturer...

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    1000-1800EUR, EU, Latvia

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I need something portable, but sturdy. Battery life would be a big bonus.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I travel a LOT. I currently have a laptop that weighs over 3kg and has massive power brick, so anything would be an improvement. The thinner the better, I guess.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Linux.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15 inch

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No gaming requirement for this laptop, maybe some light video/photo editing at some point, but I guess the CPU can take care of that.

Laptop recommendations for Machine Learning in Canada, $1000 budget, preferably less, but can go higher if necessary

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 02:28 AM PST

    Hi,

I'm in Canada and need a new laptop. I'm looking for the best deal I can get... i5 i7 or amd equivalent, 12-16 gb ram, suitable graphics card. Battery life and hard drive are less important. I have an SSD lying around I can add in, if possible. 2in1 capability is also unimportant for me.

Finally, I am also going to be recording audio files from vinyl records in the near future. A proper sound card would be ideal. If anyone happens to know whether desktop pcs are definitely a better choice for this.. I might then look into building or buying a pc instead. For now, portability makes laptops my main preference

Build quality is important as well.. My Last laptop has lasted me over 12 years and is still running strong... It's heavy but I've stuck with it, as it has the best Dam laptop speakers ever made. Just doesn't cut it for ML unfortunately

Thanks very much for any help!

I am a casual gamer. I wanted an ultrabook that could do gaming. But lately I have heard a lot of bad reviews about how its chassis is not made for better cooling for the i7 etc. I was worried and couldn't decide whether I should go for it or choose amongst the following 1) Legion y540 2) Legion y7000 3) ASUS ROG Strix III 4) HP Pavillion 15 (Gaming ) 5) Dell G3

    Please help!!

Looking for 13" Ultrabook for college, around €1200 ($1300)

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 12:25 PM PST

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Budget is about €1200, but am happy to splash out on a better machine if needs be. Am from Ireland :)

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I am currently studying computer science, so battery life is pretty important to me. Of course, good specs are much appreciated, especially at around this price point. Don't really need a touch screen since I wouldn't really be using it. Looking for something that looks nice, clean and light.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Weight and thinness are very important to me. I already have a PC, so need something that I can carry around with me daily, and travel with.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Would prefer either Windows or Mac.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** About 13" - Nice and small

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** I will be doing rather a lot of coding etc on my laptop, but will also be carrying out some photo editing along with some *very* light video editing, nothing too major.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** No need to be gaming - already have my PC for all that.

    * **Other notes** I have already bought a MacBook Air 2019 in the past, but after loads of issues with hardware, I got a refund. I spent about €1600 on it in total (including warranty) Obviously, my problems with my Mac have made me scared away from a new Apple product, especially considering the pretty poor specs for the money.

    Thanks for the help <3

Looking for a Laptop good for CAD drafting around $1500-$2000

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 12:56 AM PST

Total budget and country of purchase: $1500-$2000 United States

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. A good battery life would be nice, but I understand its something you sacrifice in a powerful machine. Overall best specs would be most important.

How important is weight and thinness to you? It won't be a deciding factor but the lighter is better.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15-17"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. CAD drafting would be the primary function of the laptop, working in Vectorworks design with Braceworks. Gaming on it would be a plus.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I would like a RTX 2070 or better as CAD software is very GPU demanding.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would prefer a gaming series GPU vs a workstation GPU because I prefer the extra power for the price even if it's less optimized for CAD software, but I'm willing to hear differing opinions on this. I want the laptop to be good build quality and last long.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My strongest contender right now is the Razer Blade 15 advanced model, I'd appreciate any feedback on that laptop or other suggestions. Thank you.

The thinnest laptop with upgradeable RAM

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 12:24 AM PST

The conventional wisdom is that getting an extremely thin and light notebook requires giving up upgradeability (especially of RAM), but I wanted to see what exceptions folks have found to that. Thickness is of course not the only factor in choosing a machine, but it's interesting to see if any laptop makers have been able to balance it well. From browsing around, I see:

    • Lenovo Thinkbook 13s: 15.9mm with one SO-DIMM slot
    • Toshiba Portege X30-D: 15.9mm with two slots, though it's an older machine
    • MSI Prestige 15: 16mm with two slots

Any others in that range or thinner?

Need new laptop for engineering & some ML (USA)

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 11:52 PM PST

Hi guys. I recently got a ThinkPad X1 Extreme, and love the computer, but can't stand the miserable battery life. I have an opportunity to replace it now, so I'm looking into alternatives. I like more compact laptops, like 13" and maybe up to 15". I'd prefer dedicated graphics for heavier processing that can be expedited with a GPU, and an i7 and 16GB RAM is pretty much a most have. Battery life is super important to me, as I'm typically gone ~8 hours a day.

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

Around $1600 USD? Flexible if need be. USA.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I don't care much for 2 in 1, but if it's a nice note-taking laptop that's a plus. Like mentioned above, I'd hope for i7 and 16 GB RAM. Good battery life is very important. Dedicated graphics is a big plus for machine learning stuff that'll occasionally occur on my laptop.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I travel pretty frequently, and I'm a student. Portability is important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

13/14inches preferred, okay with up to 15" since I know fitting all this into a 13" form factor is tough.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

CAD and ML occasionally. Running relatively computationally intensive programs on a pretty regular basis (MATLAB based).

    2in1 budget laptop | ~350€

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 11:44 PM PST

Hey there, I'm looking for a 2in1 laptop for my mum, doesn't have to be anything special, but a nice screen, decent amount of storage for a mobile device (say >=64GB) and portability would be the main selling points. My budget is around 300-350 euros.

Total budget and country of purchase: 300-350€; Anywhere in Europe; Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2in1, battery life and specs are not as important, so I'd say a balance of both would be best. How important is weight and thinness to you? It should be portable, but I don't mind sacrificing a bit of weight for better performance/build quality. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I'd say around 13 inches is the maximum. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Nothing expensive, mainly web browsing, office, videos, streaming, maybe an occasional mobile game. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    Thanks in advance!

HP Envy 13, Acer Swift 3, or Dell XPS 13?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 11:43 PM PST

Hey guys, I'm having difficulty choosing between three different laptops and could use some input.

In terms of price, I'm flexible in terms of budget however it's more so what I'll be getting for it if I do pay more. Important aspects to me are definitely performance, battery life, aesthetic and durability.

I'll be using it for general browsing, movies, video calls and work on the go, and not necessarily for high-performance tasks.

Here are the specs of the ones I'm currently looking at:

    HP Envy 13.3" FHD - Intel Core i7-10510U - 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD

    Price: $1099CAD

    Acer Swift 3 14" FHD - Intel Core i5-8265U - 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD

    Price: $862CAD

    Dell XPS 13 9380 UHD - Intel Core i7-8565U - 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD

    Price: $1430CAD

They all seem relatively similar in terms of specs but I'm not an expert when it comes to laptops so I was wondering if anyone has experience with any of these devices or has any info that could be of help. I'm currently leaning more towards the Envy 13 because it seems like a middle ground.

    Thanks!

Lenovo Ideapad S340 vs Dell Inspiron 3583 vs HP 15 under $350

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 11:18 PM PST

    Hi guys,

I'm looking for a laptop for someone whose use will not exceed browsing, Netflix, some Office use (mainly Powerpoint and Word). After reading some posts, I've decided that an i3 with 8GB RAM and SSD would work. I've shortlisted these laptops:

    HP 15 Touch screen

    Lenovo Ideapad S340

    Dell Inspiron 3583

I'm leaning towards HP 15 and Dell Inspiron as a touch screen would be nice to have but otherwise the specs of all three seem pretty similar. Another option would be this HP 14".

A better battery life would be a plus and if there's nothing else to choose from then I'll choose the lighter one.

Hp spectre x360 or Lenovo yoga c930?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 10:30 PM PST

I asked for some ideas before but now I have come to a decision between these two options. I have a $900 budget including tax.

The HP has a newer I5 with better benchmarks, better battery life and a micro sd slot. It seems better on paper. It's also a 13.3

The Lenovo is a 14.4, has a charging pen Garage and fantastic speakers.

Does anyone have any advice on these two options (build quality/issues etc)?

    Lenovo

    Mac/Hackintosh for cheap?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 09:55 PM PST

Total budget and country of purchase: Preferred around $150, ~$200 is max. I live in the United States.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Definitely best specs for price. 2 in 1 is very hard to find at this price point, and macOS won't support it. Also, I will usually be near an outlet while using, so battery life shouldn't be an issue.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important at all. It can be a slick boi or a thicc boi, doesn't matter at all to me.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. As you can probably tell from the title, macOS, or anything capable of running macOS. Mainly aiming for Catalina, but Mojave would be okay.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? Possibly light gaming, like CS:GO and Minecraft.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? 30FPS or more at ultra low is fine for both of the aforementioned games.

Other comments/notes: Used or refurbished machines are fine, as long as they are in decent condition.

This one might be slightly harder to find, so I thank you all in advance.

Looking for a secondary budget laptop for college under $200 or $300 USD

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 09:48 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

$200 USD, I could push up to $300 if laptop is worth it but I would prefer cheaper.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Battery life is important to me but I will usually keep it plugged most likely

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not fairly important, but I will say I will carry it along with textbooks

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows preferably

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Office documents, general use (web browsing, reading, netflix, youtube)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Strictly for classes, studying, and watching videos. I already have a gaming PC.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I have considered chromebooks but I do not know much about chromeOS and I haven't heard flattering opinions about it. I also don't mind buying a republished if need to. This is strictly for classes. I do have a gaming pc which will hopefully be enough for anything in my CS classes or any heavy software.

I looked around and most recommended the Acer Aspire 1, Acer Aspire E15, and Lenovo thinkpads. Please let me know what would be a option! Much Appreciated!

My main computer for the next few years | £1200 | United Kingdom

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 10:27 AM PST

Total budget and country of purchase: £1200, United Kingdom

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Not after a 2-in-1, specs are mainly what I'm after. Good battery life would be good too but I don't imagine I'll have to spend too long using the laptop away from a plug.

How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't particularly like laptops with extremely thin keyboards, I want something with near-mechanical feedback because I will be doing a lot of typing on it. Of course, I know this usually means a bulkier laptop, but that doesn't bother me all too much. Weight also isn't too big of an issue, but I'd rather it didn't tear my backpack.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows for sure. I'd love a laptop that comes with its OS install CD-ROM or USB.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. When I'm using it at home I'll probably hook it up to a couple other monitors I have, so screen size isn't super important. I'd like a bright screen with good colour and clarity, possibly IPS. 15" is fine for size, 17" would be perfect. Matte screen please.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'll be developing 2D and 3D games on Unity and doing programming practice etc. on Java and other similar languages. It would be a bonus if it can run games like Dishonored 2 or Prey.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'm going to try not to rely on this laptop for gaming (I already do too much of it,) but I'd like it to be able to run the occasional game. I'd be happy if it could run Dishonored 2 on medium graphics at a stable 50fps.

Some other stuff you'd like to see if possible: HDMI (maybe 2x) for connecting to TV or monitors; at least 2x USB 3.0 ports; removable battery; expandable RAM and HDD/SSD; Bluetooth would be great for wireless headphones; an ethernet port would be good for when I've got it mounted up on my desk.

Thank you all for the hard work you put in on this sub!

    I need a 15" creator laptop under $1300

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 08:11 PM PST

I have looked at several options, some being the MSI PS63 Modern-096, although I would like a bit more power than the GTX 1050 ti it has to offer. I have also looked at the currently-on-sale Razer Blade 15, but that is out of my budget, as much as I want it. Any suggestions?

    My requirements:

    - From a reputable company

    - 4+ core (preferably 6) processor, Intel i7 8th gen or better

    - Graphics: GTX 1060 or better, a GTX 1070 is ideal

    - Must have at least 6 hours of battery life with regular use, at least 2 with heavy use

    - Must weigh under 4.2 lbs (1.9 kg)

    - At least 512 GB of storage

    - 16 GB of RAM

    - Ethernet port

I know that options will be very limited, but anything you find, including laptops on sale, please suggest them.

Looking for a good gaming/VR laptop in the UK for 800-1500 please help me decide!

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 01:59 PM PST

Total budget and country of purchase:
Between £800-1500 UK. I am looking for a good bargain between 800-1100 or an even better deal on an amazing laptop deal between 1100-1500.
Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
The things I am looking for in this order are
    1) Good performance (enough to play VR)
    2) Not too heavy (needed as a work laptop as well)
    3) Good battery life
    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**
They are important! I am looking for something that is portable (2.ish kg) and that has a good form factor.
    Which OS do you require?
    Windows
Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
15.6 to reduce weight and size.
Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
It is for productivity software and wanting something for VR gaming on my quest.
If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**
I am looking for something that will give me 1080p 60fps or 1440p 30/45ish fps as well as something that will handle VR with ease. I am looking for something that will be future proof and play games well for the next 3-5 years as my Lenovo Y50-70 has done for a long time.

Rage-quiting a Chromebook, need a suggestion for Windows. <$500 USA

As the title says, I am not satisfied with my purchase of the Chromebook 360 (8GB 64)
My main complaint is that I have to do several work arounds just to get documents off of or onto my thumb drive. I also hate that is doesn't have a right click function on the track pad.

All I need to do on it is stream movies and write stories. I prefer something like a 13 inch. I did see some 15 inch ones at the store that I would be ok with, because they had basically no extra space. It must be relatively lightweight and not so large that it wouldn't work without a desk. Prefer touch screen. NEEDS 2 USB ports. USB-C is not a deal breaker. Decent sound preferred (My last lenovo yoga wouldn't get loud enough to listen to music from across the room).

I do prefer a back lit keyboard but understand it's hard to find. Looking to stay close to the $350 I paid for the Chromebook, but willing to go up to $500 if necessary. Was considering this, but wish it was a better deal- https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-s340-15api-touch-15-6-touch-screen-laptop-amd-ryzen-5-12gb-memory-1tb-hard-drive-platinum-gray/6350523.p?skuId=6350523

Thanks in advance! Also- I am an adult, files make more sense to me that things being organized by logo. Probably another reason I hate the chromebook so much.
