Having issues with Auto move windows extension Posted: 13 Dec 2019 12:26 PM PST Hello. So I'm trying to use the gnome extension to nicely manage my windows in multiple workspaces. For example if I open Terminal it opens the window and switches to first workspace, if I open Chrome then second and Spotify to third. Sounds easy but it just doesn't work correctly. Basically the only app that works correctly is Chrome and Skype. If I open Chrome then it opens it in second workspace and switches to it and it's all good. Spotify for example opens the window in the correct workspace but doesn't switch over to that workspace. if I open Terminal then it opens Terminal in the workspace where I'm currently at and also in the first workspace. And the Terminal window that opens in the workspace where I was at that time is frozen. Same thing with Files (nautilus). I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong or the extension itself doesn't work correctly. Any ideas? If you need some additional info then let me know. I haven't used linux for a long time :) Pop! OS 19.10. Thanks. [link] [comments] |

Lost a drive, now cannot boot. (Dual Boot) Posted: 13 Dec 2019 08:54 AM PST So the quick and dirty: I had two SSDs. One had Windows, the other Had Linux (Kubuntu). At one point I must have made a dual boot with these drives as each time I booted I was greeted with an option to boot Ubuntu or Windows.. and this is where my issue stands. I no longer needed the windows drive.. so in a classy noob move, I removed the Windows drive and formatted it for another system. Now the issue: Upon booting the system, im now greeted with an error "Reboot and select proper boot device" Which im thinking is something to do with maybe grub? Maybe it was on the original Windows drive and from what I understand I needed this to boot both drives? Is this a 'grub' issue? If so, im extremely unfamiliar with grub and how it works.. is there a solution to boot now from only my Linux drive? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 13 Dec 2019 03:56 AM PST Hey /r/linux4noobs, so just a quick check with you guys. Previously I was using Manjaro with i3, which I really loved, but somehow my installation keeps breaking and atm I can't afford to lose that much time on trying to fix those issues. So I did go back to my runs-always-fallback Ubuntu. Since I learned to love i3 very much, I installed it on Ubuntu. Now my question is: i3 seems to change some things around (e.g. "python" now links to the python3 binary and not the python2 binary as would have been with Ubuntu) and I was wondering if this would make the Ubuntu experience also unstable? Is this a bad idea? Atm I would prefer stability over anyhting. Thanks :). [link] [comments] |
Posted: 13 Dec 2019 12:16 AM PST I'm on Ubuntu 18.04 running i3wm. When I record with OBS, the colors are off. Here's a screenshot. The top image is the actual screen and the bottom one is the recording. Funny thing is, when I open the scene properties the colors are right even in OBS Here's my OBS settings. [link] [comments] |

Do terminal commands persist if the window is closed? Posted: 13 Dec 2019 11:17 AM PST I'm trying to run unetbootin on Ubuntu studio to switch distros. My system is having trouble updating, so when I try to follow the steps from a guide I get errors or command not found. I got unetbootin to load once but them had trouble with my flash drive. Main question: if I make the file executable in one terminal, close it and reopen, is the file still executable? Example: chmod +x ./unetbootin-linux.bin/ Close window New window Sudo ./unetbootin-linux.bin/ ^ returns command not found or nothing [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Dec 2019 07:39 PM PST Hey! Fellow noob here and I wanted to share something I started doing to help build memory for all my aliases. This is mostly if you're wanting to rely heavily on command line, but it's been helping me a lot as my alias file is now ~200 lines long. Here's an example of what I mean. I have aliases for opening all my config files like the following: The second line is the idea I'm wanting to show in this post. The The I've done this for a few batches of aliases to act as a quick reference to help build my memory. I have a set of reference files I maintain that are notes I take for Bash, Vscode, Linux, Ricing, Tmux, Vim, etc. and an I hope this helps! [link] [comments] |
How to run Adobe cc apps on Linux? (Elementary OS) Posted: 13 Dec 2019 10:50 AM PST I tried installing wine but it failed. (Check post history for the error) is there any way to run adobe cc products on elementary os? If not eOS, what distro is best suited for this? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 13 Dec 2019 12:42 AM PST When using rsync on a Linux desktop, what folders should be backed up to preserve data and configuration? I realize it might be different for each user, but here's my preliminary list: I mostly use default programs so reinstalling after a nuke and pave wouldn't be a big deal. In my case, /opt, /srv, /usr/local, /var/mail, and /var/www are all empty. Am I missing any folders/files I really want or should any subfolders be excluded from my list? Thanks. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 12 Dec 2019 09:22 PM PST I'm a Windows user (soon to add an "ex" prefix to that) and heard that while in Windows you install and update apps and software in general by going to the developer's page, downloading the .exe file and running/installing it, or by opening the app and clicking in "update" (that I believe does the same process but more conveniently), in Linux these are available via repositories (like Android?). But I would like to know how often these apps receive updates - is this like Windows, where once the app developer updates it and releases it to the public the user can then update it in its machine, or is it needed to wait until the SO developers implement the app update in the system and release an update? I ask that because I see a lot of people talking that, while in a rolling release distro (like Manjaro) software is usually well up to date, in a point/standard release one (like Mint) it may take some time for softwares to get an update. But I don't know if by software they're relating to everything that can be installed in a computer (the OS itself, drivers, apps) or just to the more "vital" things. So, Mozilla released version 71.0 of Firefox on 2019/12/3 and, if I recall, I updated it in my Windows 10 computer in that same day. If I was running Manjaro or Mint, lets say, would I still get the latest version in the day it was released or would I need to wait for next Mint/Manjaro update? Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 13 Dec 2019 05:24 AM PST Hi everyone. I work as a software developper and have to acces various public wifi's in my travel. Some of which block VPN's and im wanting to Bypass that by creating a Home VPN server using port 443 along with a Stealth VPN setup. Might even go with a double hop setup. Event decided if ill be going with my Raspberry pi or with a spare tower that i have but thats another issue. Heres my Question. Any tips on how to make my Server more secure? I know that just the fact of having a server active promotes the chances of gettibg my home network hacked, but id like to reduce this chance as much as possible. Any help/tips us greatly appreciated [link] [comments] |
Can the checksum of files mounted via fuse filesystem change dynamically? Posted: 13 Dec 2019 05:15 AM PST Hi, using a fuse filesystem (s3fs). I noticed that checksum of some files mounted changes with time though the file has not been modified and the filesystem is mounted read-only. I am wondering why this is happening. Is it because of fuse filesytem? used 'cksum' utility to get the checksum values of the file. EDIT: the file that shows changing checksum value is a binary file. I am doing some script installation which reads this binary file but the file is read-only. [link] [comments] |
