    Simple Questions - December 13, 2019

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 04:11 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

I'm visiting Germany and bringing my PC from South Korea. Will I need a new PSU?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 04:33 AM PST

The voltage here is 220V and 60hz, but in Germany it's 230V and 50hz. Will that be enough of a difference to stop my PC from working, or cause permanent damage? I have a Micronics Cyclone III 600W. It doesn't say anything other than 220V and 60hz, which is why I'm worried.

New build complete! Please check these temperatures...

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 10:44 AM PST

    Hi, everyone!

I just finished a new build. The specs are:

    • AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
    • Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite,
    • MSI Gaming X Trio 2080 Super
    • 16 GB G.Skill Trizent Z 3600 MHz 16-16-16
    • NZXT Kraken X62
    • NZXT H510 Elite

I've was checking temperatures with NZXT CAM and while they seemed fine, I kind of expected idle to be lower. Also, in CAM, it was showing my CPU always up at almost 4.4 GHz. I figured, at idle, it'd drop clock speed. Anyway, I checked HWMonitor and the max clock for each core there seems to line up with what CAM is showing as "CPU Clock". Next, I installed AMD Ryzen Master and that seemed like more realistic numbers. Around 30 degrees at idle with a much lower clock.

Here is a screenshot showing the 3 apps together. Which do I trust?

Thanks, everyone. This sub-reddit has been awesome in helping me build this! Have a great weekend, everyone!

Update: I ran Cinebench R20 a bunch of times and, according to HWMonitor, the max CPU temp was 64ºC. With PBO set to Auto (in BIOS), the score was 4667 but with PBO set to Enabled, it was 4907 (max temp of 69ºC).

I've no idea if these scores good as I've never used Cinebench before now.

    Edit: Whoops, link didn't work

EDIT 2: Added the "approximate" PCPartPicker list (Lost the original one, so I remade one with about the same parts)

Upgrade or Build a new pc ?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 07:35 AM PST

Hi there, Im currently between 2 hard choices

either I build a brand new spanking R5 3600 +Rtx 2060 Rig Give or take will cost me around 1250 Euros in total OR I upgrade my current build to the max amount my motherboard allows witch will cost me at most around 390 euros (not counting the rtx 2060 since I already have it)

My current build is : Intel Core i5-4570 (i7 4790 or the k version if I upgrade)
GPU MSI Rtx 2060(recently bought and yes the current cpu is bottlenecking it)

PSU Corsair CX 500W, 80 Plus Bronze

    Case THERMALTAKE Commander MS-I

    MB ASRock B85M-HDS

    HDD Seagate Barracuda 3.5'' 1TB SATA3 7200RPM 64MB(will add a Crucial mx 500 1tb ssd)

    Ram 2x4gb Crucial balistix 1600mhz (Upgrade to 2x 8gb 1600mhz)

PC will be used for gaming (mostly playing FPS's and RPG's at high settings, Resolution will be 1080p 60fps or 144fps when I can.

The reason why im interested in the upgrade route is I want to wait for few more years before building a new PC im just not sure if the 4790/4790k will hold me for that long.

Newly built PC restarts after around 25-30 seconds, stuck in this loop.

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 03:24 PM PST

I've tried reseating the CMOS, reseating the heatsink. No bent pins on mobo/cpu, tried different pcie for my gpu, tried testing ram with different configurations... anything else I can try?

I just want to say thank you guys for all your help.

After years of being loyal to only Xbox since the first original black one came out, I finally had the stones to save up and build my first PC. Thanks to you guys and Joey Delgado's youtube channel, I am really proud of the build that I came up with. It took a little over 4 hours to build it, and it was one of the most stressful yet rewarding things I've ever done. I've been waiting to finally post my build and specs and be able to finally say "It's not much, but its mine!" Thank you guys again, I'm sure there are things I could improve and I still have much to learn, but I couldn't have done with without you guys! I am glad to finally be part of the Master Race.

GPU using around 4 percent while playing red dead redemption 2?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 01:21 PM PST

    Hi all,

So I just built a new PC on Sunday. Everything is running great other than a few funky problems with controlling the rgb. I'm also having this weird situation where my 2060 super 8gb is running in the single digits while playing rdr2 on top graphics settings. My 2x8 Corsair vengeance 3000mhz ram is moving at about 60 percent while gaming, and and 3600x is at about 50 percent.

Is this normal? Is there a setting I'm missing to put more of the burden on the graphics card? I generally play on a 1080p 60hz screen (for now) but even duplicating with my 4k 60hz tv doesn't move the number much. Any suggestions? Or should I just not worry about it.

Just to quickly edit before anyone asks, yes both HDMI are plugged into the graphics card

Is a 120gb SSD okay for just windows 10 pro?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 02:54 PM PST

I just received a free 120 SSD from a good friend of mine and wanted to know if its a good idea to load windows 10 pro on it as my main system drive. I also have 3 1TB WD blacks and hope to keep that for any other programs/games. I want to know if this is a good idea? Is there some guidelines or rules to follow when reinstalling programs and games on to other drives? Is there anything outside of drivers that have to be on the main drive?

I think I'm almost there. I am building my first PC. I want to be able to use is for gaming on high settings for modern games, school work, and some basic video editing later this year.

Would upgrading to ryzen 5 2600 from i7 2600k make a big difference (ie worth the money)

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 02:11 PM PST

I recently added an XFX RX 580 8gb to my i7-2600k system (asus p7b, 4x4gb 1333 ddr3 ram, 1tb WD HD) upgrading from 960 gtx 4gb. Seems to really help.

Would upgrading to new Ryzen 5 2600, B450 motherboard, 3200 16gb (2x8gb) ram and a 480gb SSD (NVME or ssd) be a real solid boost across the board even if its the same gpu (RX 580 8gb)?

Gigabyte RMA - A Massive Disappointment

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 01:22 PM PST

As the title suggests, i am extremely disappointed in Gigabyte's customer support. My Gigabyte 1080 ti died and i sent in for RMA because it was still in warranty. After a month of constant checking the RMA website, i finally sent an e-mail to customer support and they got back to me after 3 days saying they received it but just did not update the website. Another week passes and it says on the RMA website that there is physical damage and warranty is voided. This is just nonsense because the card was in excellent shape, there was absolutely no physical damage or burn smell anywhere. It just would not work (no lights, no led). Moreover, i made sure that the package was secure, i used a lot of foam peanuts and inflatable bags. On top of that, the GPU was placed in the stock box it came with (anti-static bag, shock absorbent cover material etc). There is no way that the card was damaged during transport. What is even worse is that the RMA website now says the card is being sent back to me without even sending me a e-mail about what was wrong with the card. I think they damaged the card on purpose at site to not honor their warranty, i heard a lot of stories of this happening to people on the internet and i just hoped i would not be another victim of Gigabyte's shady practices but here i am. I sent 2-emails to them but i am yet to hear anything back and its almost been a week. I think they will just ignore me while sending back the defective card. At this point I am just wondering if anyone could give me an advice on what to do with this absolute nonsense? Any advice is truly appreciated and thanks for taking your time to read my post.

    No Display

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 03:25 PM PST

Hello! My friend is upgraded his computer, he has

    Asus z370a

    i7-8700K

    GeForce RTX 2080Ti

    16gbs Corsair ram 3000mhz

    700w GOLD Corisair PS

    2tb hdd

and hes upgraded his cpu and ram to

    i9-9900k and 32gbs ram Corsair 3000mhz and added a 1TB SSD.

Told him I would install it for him, go to turn on the pc before installing anything and when it starts POST, cpu flashes, dram flashes, then nothing, no display, no peripherials, nothing, it was working prior to him giving it to me so im not sure what happened between the time he unplugged it and me plugging it back in. I've tried taking out the ram, I've unplugged the graphics card, still nothing, im not sure what the issue is, just needing some help!

    Thanks!

Edit** the reason the 1080ti is so cheap is that my friend ordered one that never showed up, retailer shipped another one. Few months later the first on showed up. I was looking at a 580 or 1060. He said he'd be willing to sell it to me for that much since he essentially got it for free.

Helping a friend troubleshoot new build with clearly wrong fps

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 03:01 PM PST

Their build is 32gb 3600mhz ram, Ryzen 5 3600x, and a 2070 super. For some reason, the benchmark game, (Minecraft) is only running at under 50fps.

Ive had them update their drivers and change to XMP setting in the bios for ram, but it is still running poorly. Im not entirely sure what to try next.

My suspicion is that the gfx card or slot has issues, but its seated and plugged in properly to the recommended slot in the mb.

I had read through the thread currently on the front page, reading through possible thoughts that way, as it seems a similar issue, but none seem applicable, based on current knowledge

Edit: Well I sufficiently feel like a dumbass. Vsync was turned on in the settings, even though the frame cap was unlimited.

Scrapyard PC turned out pretty good

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 06:46 AM PST

So I have just completed my Scrap parts build and I think it is pretty well balanced

I am an IT administrator so I was able to get a good start by grabbing a decommissioned OEM HP box (I7 3770) and stuffing it with 32gb of ddr3, so that was all (FREE)

next I pulled a 550w PSU out of an old PC (Also FREE)

    got a MX500 ssd off amazon ($60)

    Used Vega 56, undervolt/overclocked ($180)

    3440x1440 Monoprice 100hz monitor ($300)(new on sale)

gaming is pretty well balanced most games play 60-100 FPS high to ultra settings, I am totally happy, I feel like for a low end build this went great performance per $. I am surprised at how well the 3770 held up, the high res monitor helps because I do not ask 100hz+ out of it. I love used parts and recommend them if you are on a budget particularly the Vega 56 (seems like a forgotten about GPU).

I would like to get some feedback on this build, mainly on the CPU, since I saw there were some AMD CPUs that were relatively on the same level of performance but a lot cheaper.

Also, what size case should I get for this build?

    I’ve had enough

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 02:40 PM PST

I swear this pc is going to make me go crazy. I've had to fix many problems as seen by my many posts on this subreddit. It's really discouraging me from building another pc. The most recent problem is that my pc doesn't turn on and instead all leds flicker and the fans run but sound like their clicking.

So I tried to rebuild my pc and no display....

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 02:23 PM PST

I replaced my motherboard after not being able to boot into any os.

    mobo: B85M-DS3H-A

    CPU:Intel core i5-4430

    Ramm: 8gb curcial ballistix sport

graphics card: ATI FireGL model B149

The fans spin when I turn on the mobo, even on graphics card. I attached a speaker and I hear one good beep upon boot. One thing I must say is that the ATX power from PSU has 4 pins, while the mobo supplied 8 connectors - idk if that matters or not.

Monitor has been tested and works.

Attempted to to use DVI, VGA, and HDMI Tried connecting both on board and graphics card. Also tried without a graphics card entirely.

    2TB of RAM 64-bit Windows 10

Hello Reddit! I am currently planning a build for a PC and while doing some research I discovered Windows has a maximum compatible RAM size of 2TB. I'm planning a 32GB build but became curious as to exactly how this would work. I can't seem to find a MOBO that can support 2TB or a collection of sticks that equate to 2TB. Does anyone here have any information on how this would work? Thank you and have a wonderful day!
