    Learning Commands

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 08:51 AM PST

I'm on Ubuntu Studios 19.10 (been a Linux user for a few months), and I've been getting by just by looking at forums to figure out what commands I need to use for specific things, but I don't know any commands besides some of the super basic stuff like Sudo apt-get update (and that may not even be right). What I have to ask, is how did most people learn these commands instead of just using them. I'd love to know what I need to do off the top of my head, but that's a goal for down the line.

Edit: Found a good answer. Thanks guys! I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing.

please help with windows and Pop OS (ubuntu) dual boot

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 07:00 AM PST

    I need some help please.

I have installed windows 10 and pop os into two SSDs.

I deleted the windows data in order to re-install it.

After many attempts I was able to reinstall windows on the SSD that it was originally on, the trick was to remove the SSD that contained the Pop Os OS.

I reinserted the SSD containing the Pop OS.

After restarting the laptop I get a message when choosing which OS to load.

    error: no such device: 27795F9B69145D5C.

    press any key to continue...

I am unable to load windows 10. But Ppo OS works.

Can you please help me understand, how to solve this problem.

    Thank you

Tried partitioning a flash drive. It's not going well.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 07:39 AM PST

First: how I got into this mess. I realized that I haven't updated Ubuntu in a while (uh, about 2 years, it's on 17.10) and figured it was past due. Naturally, I want to back up my stuff, because things go wrong. I figured, while I'm at it, I'll partition this flash drive, so I can use it as a bootable drive as well in case things go really wrong. I didn't make it that far.

In short, something went awry while making the partitions, and I can no longer mount the drive, and further attempts to alter the partitions, or implement a file system on them, are giving me errors.

I'm less worried about having to trash the drive (though I'd prefer to fix it) than not wrecking a second one. Any advice welcome.

Below is pretty much a complete record of the sequence of events, over the course of an embarrassing number of hours.

After much bungling, I thought I got the partitions set up right with fdisk. Now, looking at my terminal output, I missed:

The kernel still uses the old table. The new table will be used at the next reboot or after you run partprobe(8) or kpartx(8).

    Oops.

lsblk showed things looking how I expected them to look, so I started making the filesystem with sudo mkfs.ntfs /dev/sdc1

    100% - Done.

    Creating NTFS volume structures.

Error writing to /dev/sdc1: Input/output error

    Error writing non-resident attribute value.

    add_attr_sd failed: Input/output error

Couldn't create root directory: Input/output error

Failed to fsync device /dev/sdc1: Input/output error

Warning: Could not close /dev/sdc1: Input/output error

Crap. Lets see if there are still problems if I change everything I can. For all I know, it doesn't like ntfs, I think I read something about that. sudo mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdc2

Writing superblocks and filesystem accounting information:

Warning, had trouble writing out superblocks.

Double crap. At this point I figured I'd start over from scratch. Delete the partitions, recreate them, etc...

The partition table has been altered.

Calling ioctl() to re-read partition table.

/dev/sdc: close device failed: Input/output error

Time for more googling. Found a suggestion to just fill the drive with zeros, start over from that. Since I can't even mount the drive at this point, I went with the suggested sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdc

    ^C55020705+0 records in

    55020705+0 records out

    28170600960 bytes (28 GB, 26 GiB) copied, 7299.07 s, 3.9 MB/s

That's an odd quantity that doesn't correspond to drive, or partition, size. No idea what's happening there. It's still stuck on the I/O errors, and "partition table has been altered"

I can't uninstall KDE Plasma DE.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 07:25 AM PST

I'm using Zorin OS. I switched to Plasma temporarily due to a bug in Zorin Desktop. Bug has been fixed so I went back to Zorin Desktop but I can't uninstall Plasma. It gives this error : kde-plasma-desktop was not installed, so it was not removed. I checked and yes it is installed. How do I fix this?

Lenovo IdeaPad L340 w/ Linux, and max ram?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 01:05 PM PST

    Howdy folks,

Looking at getting this laptop to put Linux on:

    https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/ideapad-300-series/IdeaPad-L340-17IRH-Gaming/p/81LL0005US

The processor is: 9th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-9750H (2.60GHZ, up to 4.50GHz with Turbo Boost, 6 Cores, 12MB Cache). Any reason to believe that this wouldn't work for a Linux distro?

Specs on the laptop say it can recognize up to 16GB ram with the included W10 install. Specs on the CPU say it can recognize up to 128GB of ram. Is there any reason to believe I could install more than 16GB of ram (target is 32GB) and have a Linux distro recognize more than 16GB?

    Thanks in advance,

    - X

Manjaro stopped letting me use wifi

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 12:40 PM PST

So it just happened randomly today. I was using the laptop, closed the laptop and opened it a minute later to Google something. And it said wifi connection deactivated. I clicked the wifi button and it won't let me turn it back on. I've tried restarting and it won't do anything.

I read that downgrading the network manager can help but I haven't found out how or what one to downgrade to.

    Thanks

New PC - Can I Re-Use Home Dirs After OS Reinstall

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 12:34 PM PST

I'm getting a new(er) PC soon with more cores and memory for working with virtualization and containers, but will also use it for daily use and gaming. It will have either an 8 core i7-9700K and 64 GB DDR4 RAM and a GTX 2060 GPU, or a dual Xeon board with 16 cores, 128 GB of DDR3 RAM and a Quattro 6000 GPU--I haven't decided yet. So I have a couple of questions about how much of my current Linux distros can be re-used:

I have four distros (Fedora 31--the one I use the most, RHEL 8, Manjaro Deepin and OpenSUSE Tumblweed) each on their own 256 GB partition of a 1 TB drive and will be moving those around to where they'll each have their own dedicated drive. I don't have a lot of files I need to keep, so am I correct that reinstalling each from scratch will be the best option?

After I reinstall, can (or should I) I re-use anything from /home in each distro, like config files without creating problems? I'm tempted to go with a single shared /home on a separate partition, but there doesn't seem to much upside to that for me. I don't have tons of software or special or complex configs that I need across multiple distros.

The reason I keep four distros going is purely for fun and to be able to play with different package managers and really get to know the differences between the them. I switch to a different distro every month or so. I will be using RHEL 8 more with the new rig for learning more about Linux native virtualization and containers, in addition standing up an ESXi lab environment, but my "daily driver" will likely remain Fedora KDE.

    LightDM GTK Greeter Battery indicator

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 12:19 PM PST

Is there one? I cannot find anything about it except this 2015 launchpad question where they say it was probably removed.

Is there an official list of indicators for the Greeter?

I dual boot Ubuntu and Windows, but I wanna replace my Ubuntu partition with Pop_OS. What's the protocol here?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 11:45 AM PST

I've gotten familiar with Linux the last months and I very much prefer Pop_OS to Ubuntu. I'm afraid to break something if I don't follow a proper order.

    Sound input not working

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 11:20 AM PST

I'm currently on an HP Elitebook 840 g6 just installed fedora 31, facing a lot of issues with it. Mostly with input device incompatibility, initially the trackpad wasn't working after suspending the system. I managed to write a bash script to resolve that issue. Currently the internal mic isn't working. I haven't been able to find anything on the Ubuntu or Arch wiki either. I've tried reinstalling alsa and pavu. I'm not sure what else to do. Any leads would be appreciated!

Bought a new SSD, looking to either dual boot OR run windows 10 from virtual machine. Which is better choice?

    Posted: 14 Dec 2019 02:41 PM PST

So, I recently bought a new SSD and downloaded windows 10 onto it and ran it once without any files added to it. It is also the education edition, so I used that key.

Now...I was considering dual booting with linux mint on that same SSD. But...I am realizing that may come with issues. Specifically, I heard that windows 10 doesn't play nice with other OS, even on seperate partitions and can mess stuff up.

So, I am considering just running it from a virtual machine. But, if I do that, I heard that comes with its own issues and I won't be able to do certain things on it OR save documents on there. Also, I heard my student key may not work since I already used it once.

So, at this point, I am at a loss. I am noob to this and just want to do stuff in the safest manner without risking having issues down the line.

Can someone please guide me on what I should do or what is the safest way for me to switch over? I REALLY want to switch to mint because I don't trust windows 10 with privacy.

But, at the same time, I want to have windows just in case that one single day I really need it in a time crunch and can't access it because one reason or another.

Can someone please guide me on what I should do or how to accomplish what you recommend? Thanks for any help.

Ways of making sshd more secure?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 03:52 AM PST

I have a PC with Manjaro and a phone with TermuxArch. I want to use the phone to SSH into PC when I'm not home. This means I'll have to make sshd as secure as possible. What can I do to achieve it?

    What I have already done:

    1. Replaced password with pubkey

    2. Changed sshd port number

P.S: if I enable both pubkey and OTP (Google Authenticator) so that both are used, sshd fails to start.

Necessary Apt Packages for an AMD rx570

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 02:42 AM PST

I've tried one too many tutorials online and in a desperate attempt, I believe I may have installed unnecessary packages such as mesa-va-drivers which has a dependency on a nouveau package I'm trying to remove. So, as the title says, what are the most necessary gpu-make/model-specific apt packages closed and/or open source to have functional drivers for a rx 570 gpu?

Xubuntu 18.04.3 is the distro. I got tired of waiting since I have >400$ of new parts that I can't use and I wanted to do a clean install a while back. I'll still have my .bash_history file so we can still figure this issue out if another user comes by with the same problem. I found other threads online where users had a problem with the same cause, but no potential solution in my case.

I'm in Canada and I want to buy a laptop to run Linux

    Posted: 14 Dec 2019 10:23 PM PST

I'm interested in using and learning Linux. I have lots of friends who have told me it's worth the learning curve.

I would like to purchase a specific laptop to run Linux on, but I don't know what to look for in terms of compatibility. I have a small budget (~300$cad) and I'd rather not spend any of it on a Windows licence I'm not going to use.

I've heard Dell sell laptops that run Linux, but they don't seem to in Canada. Can anyone suggest where to buy something?

    Thanks

    Help installing Lutris

    Posted: 14 Dec 2019 11:37 PM PST

I've been a Mac user my whole life, but I wanted to try something different, so I got a used Dell laptop and installed Linux Mint on it. Now I'm trying to install Lutris to play a few games on it and I'm having trouble with some of the basics.

    https://linuxconfig.org/install-lutris-on-ubuntu-18-04-bionic-beaver-linux

I got the latest version of Mint, 19.2. Is that comparable to the 18.04 version mentioned in that guide?

I didn't get very far with that guide anyway because I don't know how to 'create a file' as it says.

    https://linuxize.com/post/create-a-file-in-linux/

So I googled 'How to Create a File in Linux' and got that. I figured out how to create the 'file1.txt' file and found it, but the rest of the stuff in that guide is a little hard to follow. So what am I supposed to do with the '/etc/apt/sources.list.d/lutris.list' line the first guide gave me?

Also, do I need root privileges to do this? My terminal defaults to start every command with $ and I don't see a way to change it to #. I tried putting 'sudo' before '/etc/apt/sources.list.d/lutris.list' and it asked for my password, but then it said 'command not found.'

How can I stream audio from a video to an Android device?

    Posted: 14 Dec 2019 10:46 PM PST

My situation here is that I have a Raspberry Pi plugged into a TV and I want to watch a video on it with VLC. I want to stream the audio of that video to an Android phone so I have some primitive form of wireless headphones. I've looked at some examples online, but I wasn't sure if they would work with my scenario, as the timing has to be good and react when I pause the video or rewind or whatever. Does anyone know of any good applications to do this?

    OpenSUSE keyboard layout wrong

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 02:26 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

So I just got openSUSE up and running on my old MacBook. Everything works right out of the box (which is kind of amazing) the only problem is that the keyboard layout is far wrong.

I have an Italian keyboard and I have selected the only Italian variant available, but I suspect it's wrong because it's a Mac.

Does anyone have a fix? Even if there was a way to manually map it it would be totally fine.

    Thanks!
