Review of the Lenovo Yoga C940 14-inch (Ice Lake)

Just about a month ago I received the Yoga C940 14-inch, and since I struggled to find any information when looking for new Ice Lake laptops, even more so for this specific model, I thought I would put down my impressions to help anybody make their decision.

For reference I have moved to the Yoga C940 from an HP Envy (15-inch) from 2014 with an Intel i7-4700MQ, 8GB of RAM and an SSD. By all means the HP is still working perfectly performance-wise, the problem is that it constantly runs warm, has short battery life and the plastic build is nothing but decaying.

Also for reference, I am an engineering student, so I am usually programming and writing reports with a few dozen or more tabs on a browser. I occasionally may play some games but really casual stuff, nothing intensive.

Now, my Lenovo C940 has the following specs:

    • Intel i7-1065G7
    • RAM: 16GB LPDDR4X (Soldered)
    • Screen: 14-inch IPS 1920 x 1080 (Glossy/Touch)
    • Storage: 512GB M.2
    • Graphics: Intel Iris Plus Graphics
    • Cost: thanks to a student discount I got this for 1200€

To put some structure to this I will separate it into a few sections. However, if I miss anything please ask me any questions and I will try to do my best to answer.

    Build

The laptop's metal unibody design feels amazing, compared to my old HP. I would say there is virtually no wobble of the screen, and it's just nice and cool to the touch. I must say the screen doesn't perfectly pass the one hand opening test, because just as the hinges are about to reach a 90-degree angle there seems to be a bit more friction, but nonetheless it's a solid package.

The keyboard is nice. Although I have my own separate mechanical keyboard I use at my desk, I have to say that in terms of laptops I find it quite nice, as well as the Precision touchpad. But in this aspect I am not an expert, but I trust Lenovo to have some experience in terms of keyboard, after all they seem to do a great job with the thinkpad lineup

    Keyboard with backlight on

TL;DR: Great build, nice keyboard to type in, as well as large-ish touchpad.

    Ports

The C940 14-inch comes with 1 USB-A, 2 USB-C (both with Thunderbolt, with one of them used to charge the laptop), and an AUX port. That's it.

Coming from a larger 15-inch laptop that doesn't sacrifice anything it's quite lackluster, however, I have to say that I don't find it much of a problem. I already own a portable USB hub to save me in an emergency case, but in general I just occasionally plug a USB stick, or a keyboard.

But the people at Lenovo seem to have thought about this, and if you are really disappointed with the amount of ports, you'll be happy to know that in the box there is a USB-C dongle with HDMI, VGA and an extra USB-A.

So, to conclude this section I must say I only need an Ethernet port and I am completely perfect, so I am planning on buying a 10-20€ dongle for the Ethernet instead of having to buy a 8-in-1 USB-C adapter for 80€ or more.

TL;DR: A dongle is included in the box, so unless you mind bringing around a dongle or two, the only missing port out of the box are an Ethernet port and an SD card reader

    Performance

I haven't made the time to carry out scientific analysis, but I ran a Geekbench 4 analysis to compare it to my HP, and these are the results in short: (FYI this is the best score I have ever gotten out of my HP)

    Geekbench Perfomance Difference

Here is a link to the full bench: https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/compare/14763011?baseline=15005441

If you have any more benchmarks you are curious about let me know in the comments and I will try to do them.

    Graphics

I haven't had an opportunity to stress the laptop with software like CAD or Photoshop, but if I get around to that I will make sure to update this section here (unless somebody has a benchmark suggestion that could answer some of those doubts)

What I have managed to test are some simulations in Linux in Gazebo (a tool used to simulate real time robotics and their physics), and that performs really well, sometimes even without the laptop making any noise, in situations where my HP revs the fan to maximum. But I get you can't compare this with anything, so just hit me with your preferred benchmarks and I will update this.

    Battery

I haven't had enough time to test this and get an overview, but in "battery saving" mode it should last around 10 hours of work.

(Again, I will update this later on)

    Sound

Just sounds... Amazing. I also barely need to put the volume louder than 20 in windows before it starts getting too loud.

    My Struggles (Linux Problems)

In the previous section I mentioned Linux... yeah, that's where all my struggles with the laptop come from.... Installing Linux. But I am aware that this is just a problem for a niche group. However, I will just document it here if anybody happens to be curious. Because of all the "super new" parts: the Ice Lake Graphics as well as the Intel Wifi Chipset, currently the only version of Ubuntu that would work "out of the box" is 19.10, anything before that does not have the drivers for the graphics and the wifi, making the laptop unusable. Trying to upgrade the kernel manually will give problems with secure boot, so my current approach is to just disable secure boot every time I want to enter Linux.

    Conclusion

In my opinion a great laptop that I haven't found any problems within my month of use. Of course, the 14-inch screen is a sacrifice of screen real-estate to reduce some weight. However, I think that it's a great laptop if you are constantly having to move around and you value not having to worry to find a plug, and if you can afford it, you can get a larger monitor for quite cheap at home, while still getting a great laptop outside.

Sorry if I rambled to much, if you read it all, then thanks for your attention, but I realize I won't be able to cover everything here in my "opinions", so, if you are curious about the laptop leave a comment, that way I can target everybody's doubts much better than with a general review.

TL;DR: Laptop with great build, lightweight and with a premium feel thanks to the unibody metal design, ridiculously amazing sound and really nice keyboard. I don't have any complaints at the moment.

    Which one? tough choice.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 12:14 PM PST

Looking for a new laptop and narrowed it down to 3. I was leaning more towards these 2
    https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/asus-vivobook-15-6-laptop-grey-intel-core-i5-8265u-256gb-ssd-8gb-ram-windows-10-refurbished/13863165

    https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/asus-vivobook-15-6-laptop-grey-intel-core-i5-8250u-256gb-ssd-8gb-ram-windows-10-refurbished/13648438

Is there any big/minor differences between the X512 and X510 besides the fact the X512 has the i5 8265 which is a bit newer and faster than the 8250?

    My Third option was this:

    https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/acer-aspire-5-15-6-laptop-silver-intel-core-i5-10210u-256gb-ssd-8gb-ram-windows-10/13978142

Is this one worth the extra $100? for a slightly newer/faster i5 than the 8265? Also, the Acer has a wifi 6 AX card (more future proof) while the 2 Asus have wifi AC cards.

    TIA

    Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 (2019) + EGPU vs Microsoft Surface Book 2 (13 Inch)

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 04:04 AM PST

I want to buy a new laptop and combine it with a larger screen at home. Right know I use a Macbook Pro 15 Inch (Mid 2012 non Retina) and it still works good but it's just not portable enough and of course outdated.

I'm looking for the best compromise between portability (max 1.8 kg) and power. I'm a media designer (at work I have a Lenovo tower) and I love photography and editing (RAW Files) as a hobby. So right now Lightroom and Photoshop are my most used applications (in addition to everyday tasks) and should work properly. I know I can't expect a desktop like performance.

After 15 years I return to Windows. Macbooks really bore me and they don't have the 2-in-1/convertible possibilities.

Right know I consider two options:
Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 16 gb RAM, 512 SSD and probably FHD Scren (if necessary I would connect an EGPU with a dedicated Geforce 1060 graphics card) or the Surface Book 2 13 Inch with 16gb RAM and 512 SSD.

    XPS pros:
    _new Ice Lake processor
    _very light and thin
    _high quality shell
    _small bezels
    _thunderbolt 3 ports

    XPS cons:
    _no dedicated graphics
    _no SD port
    _no USB-A
    _many bad reviews (coil whine)
_only available at Dell Switzerland, no other dealers right now
    _no returns at Dell Switzerland

    Surface Book pros:
    _dedicated graphics
    _high quality touch and feel
    _minimal design
    _SD port
    _USB-A port
    _many dealers (sometimes reduced prices)
    _free returns at Microsoft Switzerland

    Surface Book cons:
    _no thunderbolt 3
    _older processor
    _expensive
    _thick form factor
    _end of life cycle

Thoughts anyone? I also checked Surface Pro 7 (no lap use), Lenovo C940 (looks cheap) and HP Spectre 360 (awful design).

    Sager NP8377 Review

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 10:17 AM PST

I was recently in the market for a new laptop when I found this sager np8377 that ticked all the boxes in regards to specs and my budget. Upon searching the internet for reviews I was unable to find any and it made my purchase a little uneasy. I still pulled the trigger and purchased it so here's my review and impression so others may get an idea of what to expect.

    Specs: CPU: i7-9750H

GPU: RTX 2070 (non max Q) with ability to switch to intel graphics

HD slots: 2x m.2 with raid support, 1x 2.5" sata slot

Memory: 2x slots that support up to 3000mhz Ram

    Screen: 17" 144hz 1080p G-Sync

    Battery: 66wh

    PSU: 230watt

    KeyBoard: Per key RGB

IO: 3x usb 3, 2x usb C, Headphone and Mic Jacks, Display port, HDMI port, sd card reader, thunderbolt port.

Chassis: Screen Aluminum top plate, plastic screen facing, Main body Aluminum top plate, plastic bottom cover.

The overall feel of the laptop is quite nice. It does have flex on the keyboard more than I've noticed on any other laptop I've owned. The speakers are pretty loud but can be a little distorted. The screen is very nice. The specs are awesome. Out of the box the laptop's thermals are meh, but will require tweaking with throttlestop and msi afterburner to stop in game throttling. Power limits are constantly being hit unless tweaking takes place.

My settings so far are as follows. CPU: 3.8ghz on all cores with 90.8mv undervolt on cpu core and cache (still tweaking and testing for further undervolt) this yields very nice thermals of max 78c with an average of 65c under load playing games for 4+ hours.

GPU: locked to 787mv at 1690mhz with +300mhz on memory with afterburner. Max temps are 69c with an average of 62c. No more power limit throttling.

    Thermal paste is stock.

I added my own memory for a total of 32gig dual channel at 3000mhz. This gave me about 5-10 higher fps VS the stock single channel 16gig 2666mhz memory.

The laptop will choke itself and overheat unless its propped up or put onto a cooling pad because the pads under the laptop do not provide enough clearance for propper airflow. The fans with stock settings sound like jet engines but once the laptop is tweaked it becomes very quiet.

Gaming on it is very nice. My previous Asus laptop had a gtx1070 non max Q and the rtx 2070 non max q absolutely demolished it. On average I'm seeing minimum 90fps with max to high settings on Elite Dangerous, Modern warfare, Ark Survival, Squad, and a few others. My 1070 would barely hit 60fps in those games.

My overall impression is very good and I'm happy with the purchase. If you understand how to tweak the settings using 3rd party software and add a few things then this laptop is for you. Otherwise I would stay away because it will power limit and overheat leading to constant stuttering.

Pictures of chasis and internal comming soon.

I will continue to update this post as I go.

What Laptop Bag is Sturdy and comfortable for an Alienware M15?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 10:03 AM PST

    Hey everyone

I got a great deal on Black Friday and snagged one of these Alienware M15 machines.. But I have no bag to really carry it.

I don't know anything about laptop bags, never used one before. What are things I should be looking for? Obviously, so see if the laptop even fits (haha) and the necessary cables along with it. But what other perks do you look for in bags? How comfortable should it be? What should it be able to hold?

    Help? Thanks in advance!

Laptop specs for a Business Analyst

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 12:48 PM PST

I am going to start school as a business analyst. Not sure what specs should I look for in a laptop. I have a desktop but a laptop is needed for classes. Unfortunately, the institute I am going to, is not very expressive in this regard.

Can you wipe an SSD on a laptop that wont launch Windows?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 05:29 AM PST

Hello, I'm about to put Windows 10 on a new SSD that will replace the harddrive of an older, faulty laptop.

In case the new SSD doesn't revive the older laptop even after laptop-specific Windows drivers have been written on it, will I be able to use that new SSD on a new laptop? And would I be able, if necessary, to wipe it in order to use it for the new laptop, inside the bios of the older laptop?

    Thank you

Does Dell Latitude 5490 or 7400 series have Synaptics Touchpad drivers?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 11:19 AM PST

Not long ago, I posted a request for laptop suggestions.

I got detoured to the Dell Canada site in my internet search. A Dell agent suggested a Latitude 5490 business laptop. The presence of a pointing stick (nub) was undesirable, but perhaps acceptable. The only real difficulty is that I couldn't confirm the presence of Synaptics Touchpad drivers. The chat agent didn't know, but after quite some effort, offered that it didn't have Synaptics, "according to [her] information". Given her initial uncertainty and the arduous effort to come up with an answer, I'm hoping that she might be wrong. Can anyone with a Latitude confirm?

My further use of the Dell search filters unearthed the Latitude 7400, which has no nub (yay!). Again, nothing shows up on the driver page for Synaptics. This doesn't mean that the laptop doesn't come with Synaptics. Can anyone who owns a Latitude 7400 series laptop please confirm?

    Thanks.

"Can you run it" says my laptop graphics drivers are out of date.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 08:45 AM PST

Just in case you don't know, "Can you run it" is a site that scans your hardware and tells you what games you can run.

Ok, so, my laptop is by no means a "gaming" laptop as it just has the basic Intel HD graphics. But, it can run some older games (I'm only interested in playing KOTOR).

Now, the only limitations "CYRI" diagnoses, is that my graphics drivers are 29 months out of date. Intel's site says that the latest drivers are already installed.

Do I just assume that "CYRI" has a bug or something?

    Is AMD E-1/2 better then C2D T7500?

I need super cheap laptop. Under $50 I can have C2D T7500 (or lower of course ;) or AMD E-2 and E-1. I don't know exactly which because people often have no idea, and all I know comes from a sticker (and it's just E1 or E2).

The case has a slight dent on the right lower side and some slightly visible scratches. However, the system works perfectly, the keyboard and touchpad are not sticky and also work perfectly. It is around two years old and has served me well. Since I now switched to a desktop PC I have less need for the notebook. I would just like to now what I could get for the system, I am not planing to sell it on here.

    13-14 inch Laptop With GTX 1650 Max-Q

    Posted: 14 Dec 2019 03:12 PM PST

Are there any other laptops like the Razer Blade Stealth late 2019 edition and MSI Prestige 14? I would get the Razer Blade, but I heard that the ice lake processor brings the performance down. The MSI has comet lake which is stronger on the CPU side of things, but I watched a review that said it has terrible problems with thermal throttling(can liquid metal fix this?). Are there any laptops that have comet lake, a 1650, and in a 13-14 inch form factor? My 15.6 inch laptop with an 860m doesn't fit in my backpack's laptop pocket sleeve. Thank you guys for your time.

I'd like to get an advice from people who know stuff about hardware… I don't want to get anything overpriced; but also don't want to get something weak...

What are some good deals out there?

I would also like to play more intense games like Subnautica. My budget is 1k and below and I'm in the U.S, thank you so much!

Battery life tips for second hand laptop ?

    Posted: 14 Dec 2019 09:35 PM PST

So I just recently bought my first laptop. I decided to pick up second hand 18 month old laptop instead of newer ones because the deal was very good for the features I was getting eg. Core i5 7th gen , 8gb ddr4 ram , 2gb nvidia GeForce 940 card. Overall I am satisfied with my purchase except for the battery life which varies from 2 hours to 4 hours depending on use case.

I am fine with 2 hour battery in heavy use. But I want to know whether it is possible to squeeze more hours in during lighter use case such as web browsing , media consumption etc.

I am already using edge over chrome to maximize my battery life. ( how is chromium edge battery life & stability wise ? )

The thing I hate most is fan kicks even during lighter use. is there any solution for that ?

Please suggest some more tips to squeeze more run time from my device.
