Posted: 26 Dec 2019 06:29 AM PST I'm hoping that you can help me feel better about using Linux as my daily driver. And a warning: I am a computer newbie, so I apologize if I say something that looks silly...I don't know all of the terminology. I hate almost everything about Windows 10: from its sluggish feeling to the spyware and apps just randomly installing themselves, I really can't stand Windows 10. This is why I have been giving different Linux distros a try lately (Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, Manjaro, Elementary). But, I end up reinstalling Windows for two main reasons:
I love Linux and want so badly for it to be my daily driver. I guess if I could understand Intel RST vs. AHCI and hardware compatibility a little more, I would be completely confident in making the switch. Any advice? [link] [comments] |

I get an error when trying to resolve duplicated processes in Latte dock Posted: 26 Dec 2019 02:05 PM PST I'm using Latter dock together with KDE on Debian 10.2. When I open Firefox Nightly from dock the process duplicates. By that I mean the default icon stays and new icon for the actual running process is created. This is a known issue. So I tried fixing it with so known "xprop VM_CLASS" command. When you run it you get a different mouse cursor and you're supposed to pick the window with which the problem occurs. But when I execute that command and click on the opened Firefox window I get an error. The error text is : "VM_CLASS: no such atom on any window." I have no idea what it means and tried searching for it but haven't found any explanation what so ever. How can I fix this problem so I can continue fixing the duplication problem? Thanks to anyone. Posted: 26 Dec 2019 07:24 AM PST Hi, I've switched to running Manjaro on a KDE plasma desktop recently. I am wondering if there is an way to equalize audio output in a way similar to Equalizer APO for windows? Thanks for the help [link] [comments] |

New to Linux: installing Linux on a Thinkpad T480? Posted: 26 Dec 2019 10:54 AM PST I purchased a Thinkpad T480 and should receive it in a few days. I intend to install Linux on it as I never want to see Windows again on a computer that I own. I've been reading about the problems that I may face during installation and I found something about Intel RST / Optane & AHCI. I thought that installing Linux was a relatively simple thing, but it looks like I may have to do stuff in the BIOS that I don't fully understand. Is there anything that I should prepare for when installing Linux on a Thinkpad T480? What is a good source to learn about this stuff, so I can understand it and don't just do stuff blindly? Ubuntu. Need python3 but python 2.7 is already there, is it ok to have both? Posted: 25 Dec 2019 02:18 PM PST I decided to give Linux a try, so I installed Ubuntu Budgie on an extra SSD in my desktop PC (no VM, no dual boot, full install on the SSD and I choose whether to boot Ubuntu or Windows from UEFI). I am learning to code and decided I do all my coding on Ubuntu, so I'd be forced to use it a bit. I installed python and VSCode, all seems to work, but I started running into problems when needing to install libraries like matplotlib. After some googling I determined the issue is that Ubuntu already comes with python 2.7, so all my calls to "pip" are calling the python 2.7 pip, and whenever I wanna do something related to python 3, I should call it via pyhon3 and pip3. In VSCode, I changed the interpreter from python 2.7 to python 3.6, and all seems to work. - is there anything I am missing or should definitely pay extra attention to, because of having two different versions of python installed? - do I actually need python 2.7 there, or could I remove it, and have calls to "python" and "pip" default to python 3? Use hard drive with Ubuntu already installed on in another computer (in dual boot) Posted: 26 Dec 2019 05:50 AM PST I have a notebook running dual boot (Windows and Ubuntu). Now I want to setup my new computer and first install windows, but then I like to add the old drive with Ubuntu installed on it, to my new computer. Video player with touchscreen controls? Posted: 26 Dec 2019 09:15 AM PST Finally moved to linux on my 2-in-1 Lenovo Yoga laptop, but I haven't been able to find a video player that has touchscreen controls. I'm on Pop!_OS 19.10, the default video player has some touch controls to jump forward/backward but no volume controls :( Has anyone come across a video player that has touchscreen controls? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Dec 2019 10:27 PM PST I tried to permanently change swappiness by editing /etc/sysctl.d/99-swappiness.conf. The next time I rebooted my computer startx didn't seem to work properly so I deleted the swappiness.conf file. After this, I was able to manually startx again. The problem is that before this I had startx set up in my bash_profile to execute automatically, now I have to do it manually. None of the files have changed, and typing "source ~/.bash_profile" will correctly startx. Based on my limited knowledge, it looks like sysctl.d is taking preference over bash_profile. Given that changing swappiness isn't actually that important to me, how to I go back to how it was? Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |

auto name changing when saving files whenever there is duplicates (not batch name changing) Posted: 26 Dec 2019 08:39 AM PST Are there any way where when you save a picture from the web into the pictures folder, it saves the picture with a unique name every time instead of manually thinking and typing a new unused word? Posted: 26 Dec 2019 06:18 AM PST I like to disable PPAs after installing what I need, but lately I've found it easier to just grab the .deb file from any Launchpad PPA page. I'm not really concerned with auto-updates. My question is, is there any difference between the two methods? TIA [link] [comments] |
