Should I use laptop monitor or gaming monitor?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2019 02:59 AM PST

I am looking for a laptop for casual gaming (World of Tanks, GTA, Far Cry etc) and some GoPro video editing. These are the cheapest i7's and GTX 1060 and above laptops. Would you recommend? also i7 8750H or k7 9750H?

    Looking for new gaming laptop

    Posted: 26 Dec 2019 01:36 PM PST

My current one is about a year old, so I'm hoping to upgrade to something better, my budget is a little over $1000, and I'm searching from bestbuy (I got a gift card for it)

Unfortunately I don't much about this stuff, so I'd appreciate any good suggestions :)

    Recommend me a 2 in 1 under $700.

Title says it, really. I need something to do some schoolwork on and I like to do digital art on occasion. I've been looking at the Lenovo Flex 14, seems like a good choice. However, i have an extra couple hundred in my budget and if I'd get a decent performance bump I'd look at a different one. Thanks all.

Bright white dots on the screen -- only caused by pressure?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2019 12:52 PM PST

After using a laptop for about 2 years (months ago from now), a white bright dot suddenly appeared (something like this picture, which I found on Google). I searched Google and found that many people have been experiencing this. People said pressuring the screen is the cause, but I don't remember pressuring it. The laptop is on a fixed place and not carried in a bag or something. The laptop is not a touch-screen laptop.

Yesterday, a new one appeared on the left-centre of the screen. And I really do not remember pressing the screen. So, I wonder why these are happening. Are these dots really caused by pressure on the lid?

Could it be that something somehow got beneath the screen, like some sort of a dirt or moisture? But then again, the white spot has not been disappearing for months, and moisture would have been evaporated, so I am not sure...

On the web pages from the search results, a person said that he fixed it using a suction cup. Does it generally work, or was the person just lucky?

How do i set my refresh rate to 60Hz instead of 48Hz when unplugged?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2019 03:26 AM PST

    Title.

I have a ASUS ROG Strix G GL531GU with the following specs:

    Intel i7 9750H

    Geforce GTX1660Ti

    120Hz Display

How do i change the refresh rate from 48Hz to 60Hz during battery use? Using the laptop unplugged with 48Hz gives me a terrible headache because it's not smooth at all. I've checked the Intel Graphics panel and i could only find the option to set refresh rate during battery saving mode to either 48Hz or 120Hz. I don't want to disable it completely because i still want to save some battery but 48Hz is unbearable for me.

    Any chance?

It's a bit on the big side for me since I'm looking for a laptop that I can easily travel with but nonetheless, the specs are pretty neat. Oh, it also has a very fast full size SD card reader.

I'm actually attending CES and for sure this will be one of the products that I'll want to check out. Would love to see how that screen looks.

Would be nice if people were allowed to choose if they want a glossy or matte screen. I'd personally prefer the screen to either be semi gloss or gloss to maintain the image quality from a screen as high tech as this.

HWInfo is telling me I have a different CPU than was advertised

    Posted: 26 Dec 2019 10:18 AM PST

Bought this HP Pavilion on Black Friday:

    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-15-6-gaming-laptop-amd-ryzen-5-8gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1050-256gb-solid-state-drive-shadow-black-chrome-green-paint-finish/6364574.p?skuId=6364574

According to the specs listed I should have a 3550h, but HWinfo is telling me I have a 3500u.

Thoughts? I should still be covered under the return policy until the 6th, not sure if the difference in processor speed is worth the hassle.

EDIT: Problem solved. It was an issue with HWInfo reporting incorrectly. BIOS reports the 3550h.

Help me find a laptop under $500!

    Posted: 26 Dec 2019 09:29 AM PST

Long story short I need a laptop for everyday browsing/on the go for emails, videos, spotify, google docs/google apps such as drive, and transferring media files. I only use Chrome for my browser.

I'm a videographer who uses a stationary iMac Pro at home for editing and who like a laptop for travel. I have an iPad but want a desktop OS not mobile. As I mentioned above I only be using it for everyday tasks and media transfer. After a shoot I'll be transferring my media files (1080 and 4K) from my SD Card to my external hard drive to back up files. I'd imaging any laptop can do that but the transferring might take a while which doesn't bother me that much.

Any thoughts on the Surface GO 8G model? Or any laptop recommendations? Thank You!

How do you determine if your heat sink is copper?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2019 09:13 AM PST

I am looking into applying liquid metal (i know all the precautions of doing it in a laptop but im adventurous :D) heatsink. I have a Hp spectre x360 late 2019 oled edition with icelake. I want to see if it is copper or aluminum + copper plated. Is there any easy test aside from scratching the hell of out it to see if it stays the same color?

    LAPTOP FOR GRANDPARENTS

    Posted: 26 Dec 2019 09:00 AM PST

I am going to buy a laptop for my grandparents, the budget is 350euros.

I found LENOVO V110-15ISK, it has:

    - Intel® Core i5™ 6200U

    - Intel® HD Graphics 520

    - 8 GB DDR4

    - 256 GB SSD

    - Microsoft Windows 10 64-bit

Would you consider that a worthy choice? Would it work fluently for the next 5yearsish? My grandparents will use it to googling their medicine only.

    Enlightenment on Laptop Choice

    Posted: 26 Dec 2019 08:53 AM PST

Ive been debating about getting a laptop for some time... My budget is enormous, but not big enough to get a Asus ROG Mothership.

I'm looking for a laptop that is touchscreen and has the best CPU, 16GB of ram or more, IDC how much storage it has, as long as I can upgrade it, if not then whatever (no biggie). As for Graphics.... Uhhh, it would be nice if it could game... But if it doesn't then... No biggie.. at least capable of running Total War Warhammer 2 if it could game. As for the kind of laptop I'd like is meant for Drawing and Video Editing. 2 in 1 or Detachable laptop, mostly because I want to work side by side with my computer at home and hook it up like a Monitor of its own, or on the go.

I was debating over a Lenovo Yoga, Microsoft Surface Pro or Laptop, or just get a Touchscreen Monitor.

If I were to get a Touchscreen Monitor what would you guys recommend if you know enough or experienced enough.

Thanks, and I hope this helps others in the same situation as I am.
