Posted: 09 Dec 2019 09:35 PM PST I am new to buying laptops and pc's in general. My laptop was originally supposed to arrive today, it's been over a week since I ordered. :/ This is what I intended to purchase: ● Processor: 9th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-9750H (2.60GHz, up to 4.50GHz with Turbo Boost, 6 cores, 12MB Cache) With taxes and a spill warranty of 25 dollars the total was 1400 dollars. They have offered to send this laptop instead: 9th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-9750H (2.60GHz, up to 4.50GHz with Turbo Boost, 6 cores, 12MB Cache) It seems all the same except for the new graphics card is a Max-Q 2070. I read that Max-Qs sacrifice power? Does simply a higher number (2070>2060) mean it's better? Would you except this offer given the inconvenience? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Suggest me a Laptop for work, portability and light gaming. Posted: 09 Dec 2019 11:30 PM PST Total budget and country of purchase: Flexible but ~RM3,000(Malaysia, USD700-800) Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life should be at least 6-8 hours minimum, but value for money is the most important thing. Don't care about 2 in 1 or touchscreen etc. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not too heavy, hopefully around ~1.5kg max. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14.0" - 15.6" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mostly light gaming (League and Sims 4). Basic video and photo editing (Photoshop etc) If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I play league most of the time, and want to achieve 60fps high at least. I also play SIMS 4 and would like at least 50-60 fps on medium. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Not too fussy about fingerprint readers, but good build quality would be great. Don't care about optical drives. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Pretty much something that is light, portable with a good battery life. Also capable of running some light-medium games. [link] [comments] |
Recommendations for cheap laptop with moderate gaming capabilities Posted: 09 Dec 2019 12:51 PM PST Hi all. My 2012 MacBook Pro is dying a slow death and I'm looking to replace it (not with another Mac). I don't use my laptop nearly as much as I used to, but would still like to have something around for basic work tasks and some PC gaming. I'm primarily a console gamer so I'm not looking for a pricey gaming laptop that can run Red Dead Redemption 2 on max settings; more so I'd like to be able to play games like Pillars of Eternity, Civ, XCOM, Divinity, Diablo 3, etc, with good performance (my current machine can run most of these but only at around 15-20 FPS). I also plan to keep it mostly at home so portability/battery life isn't a huge issue. I'd be willing to spend up to $1000, but honestly for my needs I feel like I could find something for half that or lower, especially around the holidays. Thanks! Edit: USA [link] [comments] |

Looking for a laptop under $1300 Posted: 10 Dec 2019 02:10 AM PST I am joining my masters in quantitative finance course its a business course and I will be in business environment. As per my research I have two option ultrabooks or gaming laptops. Can someone recommend me few laptops from both options.. For ultrabooks Inhave been looking at macbook pro 2019 base and xps 13. I use my laptop for trading it isnt like video editing but it needs good processing power. I would like a laptop which can work for trading. For gaming the only game I play is counter strike. Please recommend me the best options you think are. [link] [comments] |
Help me make a decision for a gaming laptop w/ good thermals, strong build, longevity. Posted: 10 Dec 2019 01:21 AM PST Have around 700-800 US dollars to spend. Will be using for extended periods of gaming (MMOs only, but older ones like WoW classic, everquest) but i'd like to try and use it on medium settings for a more modern MMO if it comes out before my newly acquired laptop becomes obsolete. Next to that ill be using it for video editing and recording. Also online poker (multiple games at once). Here are my options Dell G3 15 3579. The one with the 1060 max Q GPU Lenovo Ideapad L340 Acer Nitro 5 MSI GF63 Thin or similar MSI model I'm having a hard time deciding between these. Reviews seem to be kind of all over the place. You're welcome to make any suggestions as well if you have them. But absolutely NO ASUS laptops, Ive had terrible experiences. [link] [comments] |
I want a cheap laptop. Please give me some suggestions? Posted: 10 Dec 2019 01:01 AM PST Hi. I don't know much and I'm severely depressed recently along with some other issues, so I've been a bit slower than usual. It would be great if you folks could help me out. My dad's offering to buy me a laptop for Christmas. It has to be not much money, though. Like $300, or at most $400, if possible. I just want something that I can carry around to write stories and notes on. But, I also want to be able to play some old online computer games (old ones like left 4 dead 2 and portal 2 and a bunch of older MMORPGs) because I'd like to also play some online games with my family with it. My dad showed me two Chromebooks that were pretty darn cheap and rated high on Amazon, but then I think I heard somewhere that Chromebooks don't really run computer games. May you guys please help me out? I'm clueless and I'd like a nice cheap laptop this Christmas to write on and for a bit of gaming. [link] [comments] |
Looking for a laptop to fit my high school needs ($1,200) Posted: 09 Dec 2019 09:03 PM PST Total budget and country of purchase: $1,200 USD (USA) Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I want best specifications and battery life. How important is weight and thinness to you? I want less that 6 pounds, and something reasonably thin. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13.0" - 15.6" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will do some light CAD for my robotics team and some gaming. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I want to play some heavy modded Minecraft (200-ish mods) at 60+ fps, Fortnite on medium settings at 60+ fps, and Pathfinder Kingmaker at mediums setting at 60+ fps. I would also like to freedom to play new games at low settings. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would like a decent build quality, keyboard, and touchpad. A fingerprint reader is a bonus. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I don't like the 'gaming' laptop aesthetic, so I want something more discrete. [link] [comments] |
[USA-Any Size-Sub $400] I've been pulled back into the bottomless void of World of Warcraft. Posted: 09 Dec 2019 07:54 AM PST At this point, my friends and I joke that it's like a gang. No one quits WoW unless it's in a casket. Anyway, I have a desktop at home that I can play on fine, but I'd like cheap device to be to log on when I travel for work. Nothing extravagant, just enough to log on and level an alt and screw around. I wasn't even looking at anything with a dedicated card, as WoW shouldn't require much. Here's my top contender at ~$350 after taxes, but certainly open to suggestions: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Lenovo-Ideapad-330s-15-6-Laptop-Windows-10-AMD-Ryzen-5-2500U-Quad-Core-Processor-8GB-Memory-256GB-Storage-Platinum-Grey-81FB00HKUS/273186587

[US $2k] Looking for a long-term laptop for professional audio and personal gaming use Posted: 09 Dec 2019 11:19 PM PST
$2k maximum, USA
Battery life that can run an audio mixing/editing session in a cross-country flight is desired, but not a dealbreaker.
Something that's not much bigger than an older MBP would be nice. Not that important.
Windows
15"-17"
Ability to run large, heavy Pro Tools and Ableton projects required. Would appreciate a system that can run VR games.
Main game is League of Legends. Good visuals for heavier games would be nice. Some general desired specs:

[USA] Laptop that can replace a 2014 Macbook Pro Posted: 09 Dec 2019 10:27 PM PST Hello, I'm looking to replace my mid-2014 13" MBP (2560x1600, i5, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD). I'm knowledgeable about computers but am unfamiliar with today's models. The only place the MBP falls short is that I want to install a 2TB SSD to simplify my external HDDs and backups. I can do it with this model but it will be at the expense of battery life which has already been declining. Instead of trying to do the battery too I could sell and put the money towards a new laptop. I'm hoping to find a Windows laptop which can replace it that aren't a horrible value like new or used Macbooks. I got mine for so cheap ($300 in 2016) that I need a great value proposition to justify buying a new one. I don't think <$600 is possible for what I'm asking so let's say we're trying for under $1000. The $1500-$2000 XPS and MBP class seems expensive for just a modest performance upgrade.

I want to play around with different distros and desktop environments. However, I don't know much now and I don't have anyone to talk to here about this as the language around this kind of thing is specialized. I'm worried that a Chinese computer will somehow block my access to the hardware and impede my learning. Highest priorities are: - I need an English keyboard. [USA- No Range] Efficient laptop for Computer Science Major Posted: 09 Dec 2019 09:05 PM PST I'm looking for a very comfortable and portable laptop for an undergraduate cs degree. I have no budget. I'm aiming for a work oriented laptop that can run code 4 years down the line, especially with upper level classes that involve rigorous processing. I'm not expecting to run CPU or GPU intensive code that requires a mega computer, I will probably use the cloud for that or a desktop for that purpose, but I don;t want to be limited with coding on the go. I'm not interested in gaming or doing much graphics, probably won't be my focus. That laptop I'm looking into right now is a Surface Laptop 3 (Which many mix up with the Surface Pro so I didn't get much feedback). I prefer this because of the Windows OS and the sleek ultralight design. There are two options for what I'm going for, which is the 15 inch. And the Business model spec: Either option will have 32 GBs worth of RAM and 1 TB SSD worth of storage. You can view the Microsoft website for this laptop here: Surface Laptop 3 I'm undecided because I think going for comfort and luxury here feels like it may restrict me. I've been recommended XPS and Thinkpad models as they have better specs for cheaper price. Should I go for said models or is staying with the Surface luxury fine? And are there any other recommendations you guys would put on the table instead of the surface? Or the XPS and Thinkpad? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 09 Dec 2019 08:30 PM PST My current laptop is on it's last leg so I really need a new one. I need something that can handle multiple art and photography software like clip studio paint pro and corel. I've been thinking I may want to start a YouTube channel so I'd like a laptop that can handle video making software as well. The gaming isn't as important but I've been interested in getting into playing some games for fun like WarFrame or Magic the Gathering. The laptop I really want to buy and have wanted since forever is the Macbook. I was thinking of getting the 16 inch but after doing some research it seems like it's not that great for playing games on. I would like some recommendations for other laptops. Also if anyone could tell me is a Macbook really that bad for playing online games for fun? [link] [comments] |

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I basically just need a laptop that is capable of running onenote, word, opening big pdf's/excel and running multiple tabs I stream movies occasionally, and don't play any games. Posted: 09 Dec 2019 10:04 AM PST I'm looking to get a new laptop to replace my current model, and Alienware 17 r3 (I think). It has a i7 6700HQ, 16GB of ram, GTX 1070, 120'ish GB ssd and 1TB HDD. This guy is big and heavy. This wasn't a problem when I first got it, as it didn't move to often. Now I live in hawaii and I'm traveling almost every other month, so now it's not practical at all, especially considering flights are so long and this thing does NOT fit on a tray table. I've pushed it off every time with the excuse that I don't have trip planned, but then work throws another trip out of nowhere. I have been with window for a while, though I'm considering a macbook pro with the new 16 out. I work in cyber security, and I'm also working on a CompSci degree online, so I do alot of coding and I run virtual machines. Here are some models I've looked at: Razer Blade 15: Currently, I can get the mercury white model with a 2070 max q and i7 9750 for $2100. I haven't heard great things bout the customer support, but the size and weight are great, and so is the GPU. I have consider the 2060 model as well, since it offers a 2.5" drive slot. Alienware M15 R2: They have a 2070 model for abou $2050 right now. My current alienware has been great, and customer service was great as well. I both like and don't like the look, and its about an 1.5" longer than either the razer or macbook. Plus you can only get 16GB of ram, but I don't know that I need more than that. MacBook Pro 16: I can get the base for about $2150. I like the look and feel of the macbook, and I also have an Ipad pro and Iphone, so interaction is a plus. I just can't seem to figure out why I would want this when I could get a similar or better spec'd razer for the same price. Primarily interested because of style and nearly everyone in this industry I interact with uses one, so I would want to become more familiar with it. Also no power brick is pretty sweet and speakers sound amazing. Asus zenbook pro duo: More screen is always good, and when I'm coding or doing CTF's and things like that, having research on the bottom screen sounds super helpful instead of switching back and forth. I currently connect my alienware to an Ultrawide 1080p screen on my desk, and I love the extra screen space. * **Total budget and country of purchase: About $2300, USA **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't really have a desktop, and with all this travel, it seems that the laptop is my PC now. Don't think 2 in 1 does anything for me. Battery life would be needed on the plane, and of course I want best bang for my buck. **How important is weight and thinness to you? Fairly. I'm not looking for an ultrabook (unless someone can show me that it will be good enough), but I definitely need something more portable. **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I have mostly worked with windows, though most of my life my schools used Mac's (last one was the G3, yes I'm old). I'm considering moving back to Mac due to the nature of my work and what the industry uses. **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 would probably be the smallest I want to go. **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I like to game, though I don't do a lot of it due to school work, but I tend to look heavily at gaming performance for some reason. I program, primarily in java, though I plan to branch out more to develop my skills. I do some art, but I use my Ipad pro for that. I also started some photo editing on my Ipad, though nothing serious. **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? The PC game I've played the most is overwatch, which I know is not overly demanding. If I had any measure, I would wan't performance at least better than my ps4 pro and xbox one x. Need to buy a laptop for my mom, but I know nothing about them Posted: 09 Dec 2019 01:31 PM PST
Preferably in the ~$200 dollar range, give or take $50. And in the USA.
She'll have it plugged in most of the time, so battery life doesn't matter too much. More RAM would be better because she opens a lot of programs and forgets to close them.
Preferably kind of light, but it really doesn't matter
Windows only
I'd say like anywhere from 13-16" is good
Yeah she's just gonna use the internet and maybe like Microsoft Office
No gaming I know this is probably an easy post, but like I said, I really know nothing about laptops so anything would be helpful. Thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |
