I would like to know the best laptop recommendations around 400-450$

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 03:48 AM PST

Hello, everyone. I am not very good in technology and in order to not get scammed or buy something that isn't worth my money, I came here for advice.

I was originally looking at a Dell Inspiron 3580 core i5. Thought it sounded good. I want a laptop that is 8GB of RAM, 1TB HDD, and an ok GPU for light gaming I guess (I heard I should look for dedicated GPUs and not integrated ones). I am not exactly looking to play the latest games on higher settings or anything but running some med-range stuff without running into issues in general would be nice. I realize that you need a higher budget for this kind of stuff but I wanted to see if there's something that is ok overall that my budget covers.

Side question: I stay at home a lot and I was thinking that if I'm to use the device a lot, would it be better if I search for a laptop with a detachable battery in order to use it plugged-in and not damage the battery or this won't be a real issue?

    Thank you in advance

I have a brand new lenovo s940 laptop and the cursor keeps "breaking" when I move it around, no I do not have any pointer trails on and it happens seemingly at random.

Do I need to charge new battery for 8hrs or just until it's 100% full?

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 01:38 PM PST

Hey, quick question: today I bought the ASUS Transformer Book (T101HA-GR029). On the manual they recommend I charge the battery for 8hrs the first time. But the led is white, and the battery should now (after 4 hrs) be fully charged. Should I wait 4 hours more, or is it okay if I turn it on and set it up? Worried it will affect the battery somehow.

Looking for a laptop with Optical drive

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 01:23 PM PST

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** 1,5k$ * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** good battery life and specification * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** not at all * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** no system * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 15,5< * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Bit of graphical editing, but not anything too taxing * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** No, so no need for refreshment rate above 60Hz, or crazy resolution either

Pretty much in need for a decent Laptop (i5+, dedicated graphical card, 8Gb RAM) that has Optical disc drive and SD slot with no system. After long search I have not found a single device that would have all that and be in price range. Is there a company or series that still makes laptops with build in optical disc drivers? I know I can just get an optical disc drive extend, but I would much rather have it build in.

Is now a good time to buy a new laptop? (9th vs 10th gen + price)

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 12:39 PM PST

The new 10th gen U series, while more power efficient, is actually less powerful compared to the i7 9750H, AND more expensive.

With the prices now, should I buy 9th gen laptop at a discounted price? Or wait till the newer version with a similar(a little more expensive) price. (For the long run as well). How much more powerful would it be?

    Thank you in advance

My laptop screen shattered and I can’t afford a new one right now. How can I get my laptop to use my tv as it’s new screen, without being able to use my current shattered screen?

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 11:57 AM PST

Hi everyone. So basically, my laptop screen is broken but the actual computer part of it still works. I can't afford to get it fixed, or buy another one right now, so I've been using my tv screen via HDMI. Sometimes when I turn my laptop on, it doesn't want to project the screen onto my tv for some reason. Is there a way I can set my laptop to always cast to my tv, as soon as the hdmi is plugged in, maybe with a key sequence or something? My laptop is windows, if that helps. Thanks.

Preferably a gaming one. To play football manager and that's it. My hp one is far too slow and overheating so I was looking at the acer nitro 5 but will that be too much?

New laptop is spiking max cpu temps on start up or light load but performs fine under stress test

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 12:45 AM PST

I have a new Dell Inspiron 5490 with an i7-10510u.

At start up or running basic programs the cpu core max will randomly spike to 99c for a second or two. The average temps for light load are 70-80c, idling at 45c.

However when I stress test it will be stable at 80c with no throttling.

    What gives?

Play sound to two wireless headphones with BT 5.0

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 10:48 AM PST

My laptop (HP Spectre x360) has Bluetooth 5.0 built in, and according to my understanding this should support playback of audio to two different headphones at the same time, though I cant seem to get it to work. Is this only possible for phones with BT, or am I doing something wrong?

Is this Dell probably the best spec'ed laptop for the price?

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 10:42 AM PST

I'm in the market for a new laptop sooner than later. After extensive searching, I have tentatively zeroed in on the Dell Inspiron 5593. It's currently on sale for $799 and I'm struggling to find something with comparable or better specs for the same price or slightly more.

Specifically, it has a new i7-1065G7 processor, a 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD, 16 GB RAM and Intel Iris Plus Graphics. For my needs - browsing, streaming, Office with a dash of photo/video editing mixed in (nothing crazy) - it would seem to be where I want to be hardware wise now and going forward a few years.

All the other laptops I've looked at under/just over $800 skimp in at least one of those areas. Maybe the processor isn't as good or as recent. Maybe it's only a 256 GB SSD. Maybe it's only 8 GB RAM. Maybe the Intel graphics aren't as good.

Screen quality is hard to gauge online but it comes with a 15.6-inch FHD(1920x1080) Anti-Glare LED-Backlit Non-touch Display. Build quality is also hard to gauge online. But I've never been disappointed with a Dell product.

I'm wondering if anyone is aware of any other laptops around $800 with those specs or better specs. Reviews on the Inspiron 5593 also welcome. Thanks!

Looking for the best current 15-inch laptop at around 2000$

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 10:42 AM PST

I'm looking to get a 15inch laptop and what I'm primarily looking for is a great screen, keyboard, and build quality. I don't expect performance to be lackluster but I'm not really looking to game on it. I'm not interested in MacBooks and if the price of the laptop is above 2K that's fine as long as it's not too far off the 2K point.

I look forward to your recommendations!

    Undervolting - different different results?!?

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 10:36 AM PST

    Hey,

i have an NUC8I7 here. The cassis is passive cooled. so therefore I set the powerlimit (long) in BIOS to 35 Watt. (the short power limit is 39Watt for 8 sec). To get the max out of the 35 Watt power limit I had the idea to undervolt CPU + GPU. With the intel overclocking tool is this no problem. I set both to -0.075V. It runs stable. The Intel Benchmark tool reported me an expected performance boost in score from 8%. Also the CPU Clock (in HWmonitor) is 200-300MHz higher if all cores have 100% load. But if i run the grafics benchmark Civilisaton 6 the performance sinks from 34.952ms average time to next frame to 36.07ms average time for the next frame.

Can someone explain me, why I got these different results?
I saw some other threads where some people have the exact same problem. but nowhere I found the reason why this is.

    MSI GL62M 7RDX- Not booting.

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 09:25 AM PST

I have had my laptop for over a year and half, I have never had any issues with it other than dust in the fans which I cleaned out carefully. Around 2 weeks ago my laptop turned off and wouldn't turn back on again. The charging light doesn't turn on when plugged in.

I've taken it to to a repair shop where they replaced the motherboard (which fixed it for a day), then took it in again after it wouldn't boot after one use - where they removed and reinstalled the battery (again, this fixed it for one use).

I'm currently writing my university dissertation and all my vital work is on my laptop, so I'm hoping I can fix it at least until I have submitted my work.

Any advice welcome! It may be a long shot but I'm extremely desperate to troubleshoot the issue.

    Thank you

What’s your favorite laptop to repair/refurbish?

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 08:27 AM PST

I'm new to repairing laptops and computers so I first fixed up a Thinkpad. Felt motivated to try work on some other projects.

I have now fried two motherboards - one on an old Asus and another on a Latitude 5580. I'm feeling discouraged but don't want to give up. What laptops have you found, other than Lenovos, to be pretty beginner friendly regarding repairs?

    Nvidia 1050 FPS Drops?

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 08:10 AM PST

So I got a new laptop yesterday, the Lenovo Yoga 730, and it has a dedicated gpu of Nvidia 1050 4gb, however, when I started playing normal vanilla Minecraft 1.14.4, it started having random FPS drops from 140 to 18 every couple seconds. Is there a setting inside the laptop that limiting my gpu or some cpu error? I turned vsync off, frames unlimited, low in game settings, optifine, tested 2gb and 4gb of ram, plugged my laptop in, set performance to max, went to nvidia control panel and set maximum performance for battery and set the dedicated gpu to always and again specifically for Minecraft. I also noticed that when I was playing in a server it was fine, but on single player it wasn't. Does anyone have an idea what the problem is? Is it because of gpu throttling? Cpu?

    Edit: My cpu is i5-8250U
