    Where to put Coax filter?

https://imgur.com/a/Te3j7Vk I think it should be here?

Looking into doing MoCa ethernet and I don't know where to put the filter, I know it should be where the entry point is or where the coax cable is coming from the street, but how exactly can you tell which cable is coming from there.

New to VPNs - Have a few questions!

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 05:18 PM PST

    Hey guys,

So recently I've been experimenting with my own VPN so I can access my home network from anywhere. I've been messing with tap vs tun and still trying to figure out which is the preferred way. I set up one with my raspberry pi using OpenVPN and also tried out my Netgear routers built in functionality. Which one is better and preferred?

tap or tun? openvpn on my pi or netgear router?

Lastly, I am aware that the whole process is pretty neat considering that I am using public/private key, certificate, the packet is being encapsulated within another one, etc... Am i really really safe or successfully tunneling into my home network or do I need further configurations such as obfuscation?

New home build - trying to make sure it’s wired correctly.

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 07:08 PM PST

Novice here. So wife and I just signed the sales agreement. And the only thing on my wish list it making sure the network throughout the house is as good as possible and invisible.

So here's the thing, our main POC is the salesman. We'll go to the design center later but for the most part everything will be through the salesman. Per the contract the house comes with three cat5 drops (master bed, office, media room). Worse part about him is he thinks he knows networking, everything else is pretty good with him.

Today was really the first time I got to talk with him about my wants: cat6a and cabling to install PoE cameras after closing. He basically responds that each drop will be $150 for cat5e and $50 more for cat6. He goes on to say they can install a drop for a camera outside in the front and back of the house. Huh!?!?? Aside from the price, does this guy know what he's talking about....

So now I'm thinking I'll just upgrade the already contracted cat5 drops to cat6 and have them run cables up to the attic and I'll use a switch to go to the cameras. Obviously I'm at a bit of a lose. It would be great if I could get some pointers to unscrew this guy. He basically ended the conversation by saying email me what you want and I'll get the quote and what we can do.

What do I need to email him?

Router set up TP-Link Archer C9 - not getting internet

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 06:06 PM PST

Based on the sophistication of other posts, I am not sure if this question even belongs here. I was tired of paying modem rental fee to comcast. So, I got myself a Netgear Modem and TP Link Archer C9 router.

The internet is working fine if I use the ethernet cable from my mac to modem.

Since I like to get wifi ( naturally ), here are the steps I followed:

    1. Connect mac to modem directly. and go to System Preferences -> Network -> Ethernet -> Advanced ->
      1. TCP/IP section -> get Ip4 address, Subnet Mask and router numbers
      2. DNS section -> DNS sever numbers.
    2. Connect modem to TP Link router directly. Then, connect to router by ethernet cable again. Then, go to router admin page. And, doing the quick setup using static ip option and all the information that I collected in step 1. But, the internet is still not working.

Any idea/ thoughts ? I just moved to a new place. I have successfully used this modem and router combo successfully in the past. Please help. I am driving myself crazy. Thanks in advance.

    Port Forwarding/PAT and NAT

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 05:29 PM PST

Hello. I am trying to understand port forwarding/pat and NAT. I think I get the overall concept but I am not 100% sure with regards to all the details. I will try to explain how I understand it below but I would appreciate any critiques and corrections to anything that I am misunderstanding.

Am I understanding correctly: Port forwarding is the same thing as Port Address Translation. An example of this would be on my home network. It default subnet is 255.255.255.0 and the ip of my default gateway is 192.168.1.1. I can have up to 252 devices (no .0 or .255 and .1 is the address of the gateway) connected to the network with that subnet mask in place. Let's say that my laptop is assigned the address 192.168.1.10. Any requests to IP addresses outside of my LAN would be executed this way: -The bridge/LAN portion of my home router would create a table of MAC addresses and IP addresses (physical and logical addresses) to store the relationship between my computer and the assigned ip address (if it is not already existent in the table; though I assume this happens when the ip address is assigned) -My laptop is also assigned a port on my home router and the there is a table that stores relationships between the port and the ip address. -When my laptop makes a request to the WAN, my home router will store the IP address/port in the table and the router will make the request on behalf on my laptop, in which NAT takes place, which will convert the private ip address (192.168.1.1) to the actual public IP address and the port number will be the port in the PAT table. -Responses from the destination will be sent to my router's public ip address and to the port that it originally came from, which upon being received will go through NAT again, and then PAT which would mean sending it to the correct internal IP address (my laptop) that made the request

Is this correct? any and all insight would be greatly appreciated.

    ASUS 11000X WAN Not connecting

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 07:33 PM PST

    Hey everyone,

I had just recently purchased an 11000x to replace my 88U. The goal was to have the 88U act as a node in my AiMesh to cover the entire house with the 11000x being the primary router.

However the 11000x for whatever reason didn't want to connect to my modem (provided by the ISP) at all. All lights would light up however the WAN light would always be showing as red. I thought it was weird and was just maybe something to do with the modem provided by the ISP so I wanted to try it out at my parents to see if it would connect their on a modem/router that had not been bridged to a router.

Same issue here as well, the WAN would not light up other than red, so at this point I'm planning to return this router which is unfortunate, spending $500 CAD is excessive for a router and in all honesty I didn't want to do any troubleshooting but it's just bugging me that it's not just plug in and play on a bridged modem.

Anyone have any thoughts I'd love to hear it. Maybe there is a setting within the router I just missed, maybe it has something to do with Wi-Fi 6? Any thoughts would be great.

    Thank you

My PC Affects other network devices somehow

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 03:44 PM PST

I've had this problem for ages, whenever my PC is plugged via ethernet (It's the only device using ethernet anyway, rest is WiFi), most (not all, my mobile works fine unlike my sister's and mom's phones) of the connected devices will often get cut from accessing internet however, everything will get fixed if i disconnect my PC's ethernet cable.

Is there anything i can do to fix that?

Are there any wifi mesh systems that don't need to be physically connected to my modem/wireless router?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 06:49 PM PST

I was considering getting a 3-pack TP-LINK Deco M5 but I found out one deco needs to be connected via ethernet cable to the modem/wireless router (TP-LINK TD W8970).

My modem is upstairs, and my computer connects to it via ethernet. The connection gets pretty poor at the front and the back of the house.

The back is separated by brick walls so I would want to position one deco in between the wireless router and the back area, and another at the start of the back area. Previously we had an extender in that area but the signal was still weak on the other side of the brick walls.

I'd also want to position one between the wireless router and the front area.

That makes up 3 decos. But it seems like to have this setup I'd need 4 decos because another one of them would be placed upstairs.

Is there any way to have three slave decos running off of the modem/wireless router? Or does there need to be a main deco physically connected to the modem?

Or is there an alternative product which would allow this setup and be cheaper than 4 decos?

Which modem/router combo should I buy?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 06:44 PM PST

Hey everyone. Long story short, I purchased a new Netgear C6250 modem/router combo from Amazon and it was delivering very slow speeds. I called Netgear support and they found that the unit was defective and issued an RMA. I paid $16 for shipping to get the replacement device before sending mine in and they ended up sending me a Netgear R6250, the router variant. I returned it, got refunded for the shipping and I am now returning the modem/router to Amazon. I want something in the same price range as the C6250 and I want to stick with a modem/router combo. I am currently looking at the Netgear CM1000 and the Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 both of which are renewed. Which one do you guys think I should go with? I am pretty new to networking and am on a budget as I am in university.

I think my Cable Modem (Technicolor XB6) is confused... I know I am.

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 05:57 PM PST

Got a new modem from my ISP about two weeks ago as part of a service upgrade.

Ever since have been having horrible connection issues on all interfaces, on all devices, and had some security concerns regarding a poorly implemented CM firewall.

So I configured my own firewall by setting up some iptables with logging. Noticed that every 10 minutes or so, iptables would drop some addresses from sending ICMP Mobile IP Advertisements. And once or twice a day iptables would drop some other random ip address with the same type.

Downloaded wireshark for the first time and monitored captures for about a week alongside copious amounts of googling, and started to noticing patterns in the ip addresses, and admittedly for this reason felt like a crazy person. There's a pattern in the numbers!

But now I am thinking that my CM may be confused.

The addresses that are getting dropped every 10 minutes are 1.0.0.10 (Cloudflare) and 17.11.254.169 (Apple) with Ethernet source as my CM. The third, less frequent IP belonging to a floridian public school system, with the ethernet source of my my CM, and a completely random router address in a different state. (I'm in Canada btw)

Now I had thought that maybe it was that crappy CM firewall letting spoofed addresses slip through accidentally, as my new CM ip address is 10.0.0.1 and that was one of the numbers being dropped. I figured maybe the Apple address was just some normal thing as both my wife and I have iPhones, but it persisted even with both of our phones turn off.

I also had noticed a number of SSDP packets with M-SEARCH * HTTP/1.1 in the info header, from addresses 169.254.11.17, 169.254.17.108, and 169.254.70.68, and again my CM as ethernet source for all.

I installed another os on another host to see if there were any differences, looked at the firewall logs (ufw) to notice drops of the same frequency from those ip address listed above.

I then learned that those are APIPA addresses and only happen if the DHCP is not working correctly somehow.

Then it hit me. Why these numbers were standing out so much.

The IP address supposedly belonging to Cloudflare (1.0.0.10) is my CM's IP address (10.0.0.1) backwards, and that Apple address (17.254.11.169) is the 'DHCP failsafe' address per APIPA, only backwards.

I then realized the address resolving as the public school is a version of one of those APIPA addresses with a missing 1 or 0, and the random router source address seems to be a combination of one or more of those APIPA addresses mixed with either a missing 1 or 0, in some oddly permutated order, as one of the numbers is 38, instead of 108 or 68.

Now I have no idea what this means, other than something is not configured properly.

Any ideas what I can do to figure this out?
Could this have something to do with the dropped connections and 'bouncing' speeds? Or is this type of activity normal?

I have replaced the modem, reset to factory defaults, power cycle, renewing DHCP on the all hosts, with no such luck.. So it could be a problem on my end, but I dunno what.

In any case it's interesting as hell, and I will definitely continue learning... But for now I could really use a hand scratching this itch.

Why is this happening and how can I fix it? Can provide config/logs if needed.

Thanks for taking the time to read and help!

    NAT and Host id

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 03:21 AM PST

    Hi!

I have a question regarding host id and NAT. If let say my home router uses NAT and it has a public ip 134.125.25.x, where x is the part defining host id and I have two hosts on my network sending and recieving data. inside my network they have 192.168.10.3 and 192.168.10.2. When data goes out the router from any of the hosts via NAT translation the outgoing IP becomes 134.125.25.1 for both of them. And here is my question. If the router is getting frames pack with destination IP 134.125.25.1 for both hosts. Why do you even have a host-id part of the public IP address if all the hosts inside our uses the same ip? Why dont you divide so IP just define your a specific network and then have a table in the router mapping MAC addresses(ports if needed) instead of local IP addresses and destination IP?

Looking for direction as to what to purchase to replace/upgrade my home network.

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 06:13 AM PST

As of late we've begun having issues with our home network. I guess I'm beginning to realize that it's a pretty dated setup, and our kids are growing up which is leading to many more devices connected and streaming simultaneously. I've admittedly fallen out of the loop with this kinda stuff, but I was hoping to get some direction as to which routers and/or modem might work best for our situation.

Currently we're using (all purchased in 2013); RT-AC66U ARRIS SURFboard SB6141 Various janky range extenders that work through the powerlines for areas that don't get a good primary signal.

It's a 2300 sqft. home that has three levels. There are four of us living in it - all of which either stream or play games on various phones, PCs TVs and video game consoles.

Our main issues, I think, are that we're streaming to a lot more devices these days than in the past. We've also got problems with these range extenders and them creating multiple SSIDs rather than everything under one umbrella.

I've been eyeing the new mesh systems, but don't know much about them. I'm assuming that they just daisychain the signal to each other - so if they close enough to each other to receive a good signal they'll just forward a deteriorated one? I realized wired access points would be the better option, but it's not feasible for anything but the main access point in this house.

    I guess my main questions are;

Should I bother replacing my modem with a newer model? Will an old modem be a bottleneck if I don't bother with it?

Are there any mesh systems that are more well regarded than others? Likewise - is there anything I should steer away from?

    Any input would be appreciated!

TP Link Deco M5 Stuck in 2.4Ghz because of "Simplicity"

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 11:46 AM PST

    Hey

I recently received a gift of a 3-pack deco from a friend from the States.

I am currently living in Pakistan. I set it up without issues. Everything is working great, HOWEVER, i found that the Decos only broadcast on bands based on the country (of purchase?).

USA Supports Bands 36 to 165 Mhz in 5Ghz.

    Pakistan supports 149 153 157 161 165 in 5Ghz

Now as obvious, there is an overlap. If I could just change the channel to 149+ (which both countries support), my phones would be able to see the 5Ghz network. Currently my Deco is broadcasting at 44 Mhz so none of my phones can see or switch to the 5Ghz.

So in other words, I paid $180 for a Wireless N mesh system because TP Link thinks the feature to change channels is "advanced".

    Any ideas guys?

    Home 10Gbit

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 11:14 AM PST

I want to switch part of my network to 10Gbit, but leave it open for expansion later

Here's what I have right now:

    • There are in-wall Cat 6 running to the basement structured media enclosure and into a patch panel. They're all roughly 30m-45m long
    • There is a Meraki MS220-8P that connects them all together and is also connected to a pfSense router and a Dell R720xd server with 2x1Gbit running in aggregate using LACP
    • Each room has 1Gbit switches that connect various devices
    • Meraki MS220-8P has two SFP+ ports capable of 10Gbit

What I would like to achieve for now:

    • Use existing Cat 6 wires to connect 10Gbit to my Office
    • Connect my Dell R720xd to 10Gbit
    • Affordable 10Gbit switch in the office that is capable of at least 1x 10Gbit and multiple 1Gbit
    • Potentially have more 10Gbit ports to connect other rooms to 10Gbit

    Questions:

    • Will the current patch panel be a problem? Since its just a standard Cat 6 patch panel.
    • I can switch the onboard network in the R720xd to one with 2x 10Gbit SFP+ ports, would this be the cost effective option to connecting it to 10Gbit?
    • 10 Gb SFP+ switch using SFP+ to RJ45 modules? Or 10Gb RJ45 switch? Whatever is cheaper
    • 10 Gb PCI-e network card? Either SFP+ to RJ45 module or direct RJ45. Whatever is cheaper
    • PoE capable switch? Or this just gets too expensive
    • SFP+ cables?
    • Anything I'm totally forgetting?

Multilevel Home and Power Over IP

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 02:32 PM PST

    Layout:

I have a multilevel home which does havoc with network signals due to neighbors with 500 signals and baby monitors, etc.... I have 2 asus rt-arch13 connected to my gateway with wifi off to improve performance, one router is connected via power over IP, TP-Link AV500 (or POE for the younger kids). I have a gaming computer which is currently using the router connected via POE and an HD tv using wifi upstairs. I have 200 mbps service internet service. I have about 300 wifi devices +/- 1.

    Question:

Should I get another TP-Link POE set to connect to my gaming computer and the high end tv so they can improve my performance? Should I just stay on wifi because that is as good as it going to get?

    Issues with Verizon/Google Port Forwarding

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 12:51 PM PST

I've been trying to port forward my laptop so I can run a server off of it but have encountered many issues in doing so. The router is connected to a Google WiFi mesh network with 4 connection points. I originally tried port forwarding through that but after many failures and some research I found that it was apparently impossible to port forward through a mesh network like Google WiFi due to all of the access points being forced into bridge mode. Next I tried turning on the 2.4 GHz on the Verizon router and setting it up as a separate network and port forwarding through that with no success. All if the port forwarding rules and active port forwards are correct as far as I know and I have no clue why the port isn't forwarded. If anyone has experience with a similar network or any idea why it might not be working any help would be greatly appreciated. Port Forward Port Forwarding Rules Canyouseeme Error

Image stuttering and lag on in-home game streaming

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 12:26 PM PST

I have a NetGear nighthawk ac1900 (R7000) router with 600 Mbps home internet, my host pc is connected wired via the ethernet port to the router (pc spec: i9 9900K, 32gb ram, rtx 2080 Ti, Gigabyte z390 aorous pro wifi). The client pc is a mac osx connected via the 5ghz wireless. Both connected to the same home network. I live in a small one-bedroom apt.

The qos is off in the router, and it has the latest firmware version (updated a few days ago)

For the last few days, I am having a lot of issues using moonlight or steam in-home streaming, the image quality drops a lot and becomes pixelated, there are sudden stutter and all sort of other issues.

What should I do to minimize this? Should I buy a new router? Running a wire would be the last option I would like to look at.

    Thanks
