Wait, what? Tethering wifi connection to a laptop via wifi Posted: 16 Dec 2019 06:19 AM PST Hey, guys. Today I was tethering my phone connection with a laptop (because the hotel I'm in only allows 1 free internet user per room) and noticed that the mobile data was off. I checked the IP address on my laptop: it was using my phone wifi connection to get online (same external IP of the phone). Both devices were online. So, that's news for me: Android tethering can make the phone function as a (masked?) wifi repeater. I thought it only could allow tethering from mobile data. I'm using Pixel 3 XL, Android 10, btw. Also, important to mention that my personal wifi connection was at 2,4GHz, but the hotel connection was sometimes at 2,4GHz and sometimes at 5GHz (they have both options with the same SSID, so the phone picks anyone). So, the wireless hardware handles dual band fine. Well, if this is someting not new, sorry to post it then. I tried to find more info about it and nothing came out. Regards. [link] [comments]

Posted: 15 Dec 2019 11:10 PM PST For example, I hope Google makes their own custom watches—while it's true they bought Fitbit—but that they give it some justice (if it ever happens), and not just half-ass it. I also hope that Google can stop focusing on still photography on their Pixel devices, and deliver huge video recording improvements to keep up with everyone, and to have more reliable phones. I also hope that Android OEM's are less influenced by Apple's decisions, especially around their controversial/big redesigns like the 7/X (like removing headphone jack, notch, etc) and do their own thing. What do you want and hope Android OEM's/Google to deliver or bring in the next decade? [link] [comments]
Just got RCS working in Australia on Telstra with my OnePlus 6 Posted: 16 Dec 2019 03:25 AM PST Updated my messages app and was instantly asked if I wanted to turn on chat features. Took 10 seconds to verify with Telstra. RCS is amazing. [link] [comments]

We need to stop taking popular youtube reviews as gold Posted: 15 Dec 2019 09:05 PM PST I will disclaimer this with I 1000% watch way too many useless reviews of android phones/laptops and whatever else popular reviewers like MKBHD, Dave2D, and Mr mobile make. While I do feel their reviews are helpful, I think sometimes they have the influence to completely destroy viable products. Case and point, the reason why I'm writing this has to do with 3 products I currently have purchased over the last couple years. Product 1, the essential phone - [ insert just the essentials joke here ]. This phone when it came out had a rocky start - however - it was the ONLY phone besides google pixels line that was getting day 1 security updates period. It sold poorly because first gen product from a brand new company, rocky launch, and on top of that terrible day 1 reviews. Essential should have lowered the price to 600 or 500 at launch and maybe just used glass and aluminum to justify the lower cost. BUT had any one of these reviewers reviews this when the price was dropped during the first black Friday sale, this phone would have sold a bit better. The reviews actually had be hold off until the phone dropped to 250 because I felt like even if the phone was bad then - for 250 it would get me by for at least 6 months. Loved this phone and used it up until very recently. Product 2. Razer phone 2. I wont spend much on this. I think overall the reviews were okay at best. But I got this phone during the 300 buck deal and I absolutely love this phone as well. It def deserved to sell better then it did, but I am sure that between all the different manufacturers - it would really come down to marketing or price to sell better then it did. Which reviewers wont be enough either way. Product 3. The Pixel slate. This one is huge and I would argue that this is the worst tragedy in the android/chrome OS space. Partially this is google's fault. They clearly were trying to meet some holiday deadline when this came out. Their review units sent out to reviewers should have been the i7 model with non beta software period. And they have no excuses for what they did during the release cycle. HOWEVER - since the celeron processor line was dropped, no one big in the tech industry has reviewed this product since. It must have improved dramatically as I ended up purchasing this for 450 during the black Friday sale and have experienced what I would consider to be a flawless experience. Had I known I would've loved this product and had I been able to get a decent assessment from reviewers I could trust (all reviews when you search are from a year ago at launch or people who, I probably would have gotten the i7 model since Google seemed to drop the idea of making another tablet. I think that this product def isn't for everyone (most tablets/2 in 1's aren't), BUT it is my personal favorite product to date hands down as it reminds me of an android tablet I never was able to get - the asus transformer. tldr - I think reviewers are a good source most of the time, however when they diss a product to death - either they should try to revisit the product after a bit of time, or we as enthusiasts/consumers need to do a better job at not taking these few influential peoples word as gold well after their initial review.
