    $500 Ubuntu 18.04 Coding Laptop

    $500 Ubuntu 18.04 Coding Laptop

    $500 Ubuntu 18.04 Coding Laptop

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 09:21 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $500, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? It isn't.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Going to load Ubuntu 18.04 on it. As such, Dell, Lenovo Thinkpad, or HP are my best bets I think.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Nope. The main purpose will be coding/development while hooked up to another display. That and browsing the web.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

My search so far: My minimum specs in my search were i5 processor, 8GB RAM, and I favor SSD over HDD. For <$500, this made a small target. I found three that hit the mark.

    Lenovo ThinkPad T470s - $494.10

    Dell Inspiron 15 5593 - $449.99

    HP Laptop 15t - $429.99

Please help me decide between these three or suggest another that hits the target.

Buying in US for use in India

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 01:02 AM PST

My budget is around 1200$( Can push it to 1400$ if i like the laptop)

The laptop will primarily be used for media consumption and browsing so i need a laptop with a beautiful screen that is atleast 15"( I thought of going with surface laptop 3 because of the 3:2 aspect ratio but i was told it wasn't worth the price)

It has to be touchscreen but not necessarily a 2in1

I don't mind the thickness or weight

    Good battery backup is appreciated

Used budget laptop for office use

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 02:39 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $200ish in the US, "Used/Refurbished" condition on ebay/similar sites. Full sized Keyboard is a must.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money. Battery life doesn't matter much as it would always be plugged in.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Sure would love a light laptop (who doesn't?) But it doesn't matter much.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Bigger is better. No less than 13-14", FHD.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No gaming, no video editing. For office use (Basic office programs) and browsing only.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Specs are really the most important thing for me, with maybe reliable build quality coming in second.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

To sum it up, looking for a used laptop with a decent specs for the price. Only requirements are: Full sized keyboard (no tkl), decent specs for day to day use without any majors lags and FHD display with good colors. Bonus points if its color matches this one: Grey Everything other than that is secondary.

Storage/SSD doesn't matter, already own one and gonna replace with it. My current Dell E6510 keeps giving me blue screen and overall, it has been a poor experience: Lagging, sometimes freezing completely, struggling to run several basic tasks without choking to death.

    Looking for a 2 in 1 laptop

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 12:53 AM PST

Total budget and country of purchase:

My budget is around 1400,- (I could go a little higher if it is a really solid laptop) and I'm purchasing the laptop in the Netherlands

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I am looking for a 2 in 1 laptop with relatively good specs

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Weight and thinness aren't really that important of a factor to me

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

I'm still not sure, but I'm leaning towards a 15 inch laptop because I'm using the numpad a lot for excel sheets.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

In my own time I like to photoshop a bit but it's not on a professional level. I would also really like to learn a bit of video editing or digital sketching, so the specs should be able to handle those. Full HD is probably enough for me, don't think I need 4K resolutions but I could be wrong.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I don't game that much on laptop, so this isn't an issue to me. But games I play are for example, hearthstone or slay the spire.

I searched for a bit and thought of buying a HP Spectre x360 or a Lenovo Yoga C940, but I'm not sure if those are the right options.

Looking for a gaming laptop, also used for office work, light audio production and editing

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 04:35 AM PST

Total budget and country of purchase:

    $800-1000, USA

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Good battery life is the biggest priority on this list, but whenever I need to use the laptop away from home, I'm always within reach of an outlet so it's not a huge deal. 2 in 1/touchscreen would be a bonus, but not super necessary. I teach private music lessons and I sometimes use my laptop, so there are times when a more tablet-style presentation would help.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I'd say 3 out of 5, since I do carry it around sometimes.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

14-15", although at home, where I do most of my work and all of my gaming, I plug into a monitor (really a TV) with an HDMI cable.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

For my musical work, I run the Sibelius 7 notation program and Audacity to record audio. It's important to be able to run those, but I don't use ProTools or anything high-end. I do listen to music on the laptop, but through headphones, so the speakers are a non-issue. I use Word and Excel frequently. I do watch a lot of streaming video as well (Netflix, Amazon, Hulu). For gaming, see below.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I enjoy games I've downloaded from Steam, specifically the Fallout series (through New Vegas, my current laptop can't handle FO4), Dead Space, and Batman Arkham. I love Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, but my current machine can't handle the other two. I would like to finish the series, so the laptop needs to meet the following specs (for Arkham Knight). Since the game is a few years old, I'm giving Steam's recommended specs instead of minimum, hoping this will fit my budget:

Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system

OS: Win 7 SP1, Win 8.1 (64-bit Operating System Required)

    Processor: Intel Core i7-3770, 3.4 GHz | AMD FX-8350, 4.0 GHz

    Memory: 8 GB RAM

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 - 3 GB Memory Recommended | AMD Radeon HD 7950 - 3 GB Memory Recommended

    DirectX: Version 11

    Network: Broadband Internet connection

    Storage: 55 GB available space

    Other considerations

A hard drive size of at least 500 GB, but preferably bigger, since I have a large music library. I can always get an external drive though.

A number pad. This is essential for the Sibelius program.

A comfortable keyboard. I do a lot of typing.

HDMI port and at least three USB ports. All my peripherals are regular USB, not USB-C, though I'd be open to suggestions on how to utilize USB-C if that's what's generally available now.

I thank you for your recommendations and look forward to reading them!

ASUS - ROG GU502GV or a dell G7 for gaming?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 09:45 PM PST

    I am deciding between the Asus ( https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-rog-gu502gv-15-6-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-rtx-2060-1tb-ssd-optane-brushed-metallic-black/6338248.p?skuId=6338248 ) and the Dell G7 ( https://www.bestbuy.com/site/dell-17-3-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-rtx-2060-1tb-hard-drive-256gb-ssd-abyss-gray/6350871.p?skuId=6350871 )

Mostly it would be playing League of Legends (which both should play without any problem) and Path of the Exile, that no machine can run without any issues both have a 2060 with the same processor.

Dell Pros: 17 " screen Cons: 60 HZ 256 SSD with 1 TB HD

Asus Pros: 144 Hz screen and is 1 TB SSD Cons (more expensive, i got the Dell with an offer).

There might be other options but the main constraint I have is the time to get it.

    A good editing/gaming laptop $400-$525

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 03:17 AM PST

I'm super new to PC and wanted to try to get into it using the boxing day sales, but am pretty confused. This would be my first non-brick so I don't need anything crazy. I'm getting into Unity though and would like something that can handle things like that. For perspective I've essentially made a Zelda 1 clone, but would love to get immersed in it, maybe even doing it as a side job. I also want to be able to play games well, in the future I would like to build my own desktop. I'm gonna start with things like Overwatch and maybe play with a friend who's into Tarkov. I'm Canadian and already did the conversion in title, so $525 is $750 to me. I went into The Source to look around and a friend who works there recommend the Asus vivobook x510qa-ts12-cb. I thought it would be great, but looking online has made me less sure. The Asus TUF FX505DT Gaming Laptop I saw in an earlier post looked awesome, but it's also double my budget. I am very happy this sub exists because this was the first thing that came to mind when it came to this stuff. It would be great to get a reply kinda URGENTLY because boxing day isn't so far away, but thanks to anyone who replies.

tl;dr Need a computer that can run games and do Unity like work. Looking at Asus vivobook x510qa-ts12-cb, but am iffy. New to PC and need something cheap, $400-$525~.

Hi Looking for a gaming laptop that also has great battery life so I can use it for university. Preferably a 15 inch or 13 inch. Budget I'd say is around £2000 but I wouldn't mind spending a bit more.

I heard there was a laptop that allowed you to switch between graphic cards to save battery life?

    Reliable gaming laptop for $2000

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 01:37 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $2000, can extend to $2500 for exceptional model; Kazakhstan

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I prefer build quality, cooling system and self-serviceabilty. I don't care about weight, battery life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Absolutely not important and I'd even like it not to be thin and lightweight as it's usually contradicts with things I require.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Modern AAA games. Should run medium to high settings at 60 FPS now and preferably at least low to medium at 30-60 FPS 5-10 years in the future.

I want to buy a gaming laptop which should last 5-10 years and provide adequate gaming performance. My main concerns are: reliability, good cooling, self serviceable. I'm living in Kazakhstan, so choice is severely limited and service is not always good here. My budget is 2000 but I can extend it to 2500 for exceptional model.

I think that for my needs 2060 and 2070 are the most appropriate GPUs. Laptops with 2080 are outside of my budget. There are plenty of 1660Ti laptops, I'm not sure if I should consider them. According to benchmarks 2060 is better than 1660Ti and RTX is a bonus, so for now I want to try to select an RTX model. I don't think that CPU matters much, although it can't be realistically replaced, so, I guess, something like 9750H is a good bonus. I don't care much about RAM and SSD/HDD setup either, as those are usually could be changed easily.

I've selected laptops from local stores, please help me to choose the most reliable one among those models.

A good cpu and a dedicated gpu will do, or if you think AMD cpu's are ok

    MSI GL62 for $300 worthwhile?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 05:38 PM PST

Going to view this laptop that has a i7-6700HQ & a GTX960M 2GB model for $300 tomorrow? I only really plan on playing a few paradox games and maybe PUBG on the occasion. Would this laptop be worthwhile for the price?

Looking for a nice laptop to use for school

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 07:34 PM PST

Total budget and country of purchase: No more than 1400$, United States

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply: I want a laptop with good battery life, but can handle medium to heavy gaming when plugged in.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Doesn't really matter to me.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I'll be reinstalling the OS anyways, so it doesn't matter.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'll be playing mostly triple A and indie games.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I want to run at least modern warfare at high settings with 60fps

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'd prefer a good keyboard and touchpad because I'll be doing assignments on it.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. N/A

HP Pavillion 15, ASUS VivoBook X512, Acer Aspire 5 for web development? est. 500 usd

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 09:01 PM PST

Hey, im looking for these options. Mainly for web development and screen quality for web development (links are in spanish):

    1. HP Pavillion 15 Option 1 (IPS)
    2. HP Pavillion 15 Option 2 (IPS)
    3. HP Pavillion 15 Option 3 (WLED display)
    4. Acer Aspire 5 (1336x768 res - IPS display)
    5. ASUS VivoBook x512 (FHD screen)

I have only these 5 options because im from Chile. Im looking mainly for front-end things (still learning) for the future. What would you recommend, number 3 and 5 doesnt have an IPS panel but has a FHD one. Does it really matter for web design the type of panel?. Also should i really go for 1920x1080 display? Im planing to have this notebook for 4-5 years more.

PS: Bonus points if it can dual boot with linux.

A cheap, temporary 13 inch laptop for development

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 05:04 PM PST

    Hey folks,

I'm looking for a cheap 13 inch laptop to last me about 6 months, I've got a 2013 MBP that is on its last legs and i'm hoping to see what 13 inch laptop Apple come out with some time next year, but I'll need something to bridge the inevitable gap until then.

I don't need anything fancy, i'd like to be able to run linux, 8GB of RAM, a keyboard I can type lots on (as long a key travel as possible I guess?), I'd appreciate a decent battery life and a screen that is comfortable to look at for long periods of time.

If it's got an M.2 SSD I can buy a fancy one and use it in my upcoming PC build, it would be a nice to have but I guess it doesn't really matter.

I'm open to ARM or X86 architecture.

For my budget i'd like as low as possible, but i'm happy to go as high as I need to sufficiently meet my needs.\

EDIT: I'm a dingus and didn't use the form:

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
      • UK.
      • As low as possible, but i'm happy to go as high as I need to sufficiently meet my needs.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
      • 2 in 1 could be a nice to have, I haven't ever tried it so why not?
      • A good battery life is important to me.
      • A keyboard that is pleasant to type on is important.
      • A screen that is comfortable to look at for long periods of time.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      • meh, it being 13 inch will make it small enough
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
      • Arch Linux
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      • 13 inch
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      • nope, just IDE's and docker
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      • Am not gaming

Need help with a durable, inexpensive 2 in 1!

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 08:38 PM PST

Total budget and country of purchase: My MAX budget after tax is $600 CAD. I'll be purchasing from Canada but am willing to buy internationally (Amazon US, etc, if it's a good deal.)

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. A 2 in 1 detachable form factor is preferable, preferably with a good processor and 4gb RAM minimum.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all important. As long as it's a 2 in 1 neither are important to me.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Must be Windows. Cannot be Chrome OS.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Maybe some presentation editing and photo editing. Its mainly for studying with lots of tabs open, netflix, and storing crypto wallets (Not mining, just having wallets.)

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality. Had an Acer and the plastic cheaped out and cracked all the way up the length of the screen.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I will slightly raise the budget if it's a good deal, but will not go past $650. I only need time for brushing with lots of tabs, storing crypto wallets, viewing PPT and PDFs, and Netflix binging. Thank you for your help!

    Canada(600-800) Everyday Family Laptop

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 08:58 AM PST

Total budget and country of purchase: 600-800 CAD, Canada

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. It will live plugged in most of the time so best specifications. 2 in 1 doesn't matter.

How important is weight and thinness to you? It will live on a sturdy table so it can be a brick.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14+

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Playing mostly older/indie games, Office Suite, Steam, Skype, Steaming while hooked to a larger TV.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Nothing crazy just mid level older games.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Wouldn't want a bad keyboard but dont need a super one. Doesn't need to light up or any shit just normal typing on it. Build quality as well. Want it to last.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Used mostly for everyday life, banking, streaming videos onto out livingroom TV, Skyping every week for Nerd Night. Occasional games and text editing. Right now I have an ancient ASUS that is rolling with windows 7 so with them no longer supporting security might be time for an upgrade. Or should I just wait for boxing day?

HP lappy HDD failed. Debating whether to stick with lappy or go with tablet & NAS

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 07:04 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

USA. Looking at around $500-$600 tops when I get my tax refund in March-ish

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I'm really intrigued by the 2in1 as I would like to use it for reading books/comics without having to play the switcheroo game with memory sticks to the tablet.

    • **How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Almost zero

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

I'm most familiar with Windows. Linux is Greek to me and I don't like Mac.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Not really, but I'd be happy in the 13-15" range.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Don't plan on doing much gaming, although I have considered games like Warframe, Destiny 2, or WoW.

    No video editing or CAD

Wouldn't mind some Bluetooth action but not gonna lose sleep if it doesn't have it.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Warframe, Destiny 2 or maybe WoW. Coming from ps4, I'm fine with 30-60fps.

Obligatory "I'm on mobile atm, please forgive the formatting."

With that out of the way...

The HDD on my lappy failed recently and have been unable to recover any data from it. It was/is an HP 15f272 running Win 10. Fortunately, most of what's important to me was backed up on a portable external drive. I usually do a back up about once a month to protect against exactly this.

The battery was also an issue as I needed to have always plugged in as not doing so gave me about 10min of runtime.

I often use my lappy for streaming video to the ps4, word files, spreadsheets, and very light gaming - Star Wars Rebellion from 1998 via steam, my son did some minecraft for awhile on it, WoW occasionally. It never had a good enough video card to run Warframe or Destiny 2 without skipping.

My conundrum now is do I get a new HDD and battery, or a "not so hefty" lappy or tablet and some kind of NAS system to handle much of the streaming and data backup?

I'm not even sure if the ps4 would even recognize a NAS system/personal server and am not familiar with maintaining something like this. Willing to learn though.

But I am familiar with the setup I had before despite some of the drawbacks - always had to leave lappy plugged in and powered on (probably what ruined the battery and possibly lead to the corruption of the HDD?), would stop signaling after a few hours and having to restart the lappy.

I had a Bluray player that was able to stream, but some of the apps (Hulu, Netflix, YouTube) were no longer supported so I brought the ps4 into the living room since the apps were all still supported.

I would rate my tech/software savvy-ness as average.

TL;DR Do I fix the lappy or go big with a NAS/personal cloud solution.
