With all of Google's experience with AI and machine learning, you'd think they would make the best predictive text system

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 09:59 AM PST

Title. It's a shame Gboard has such awful predictive text, but the competitors aren't much better. I still can't believe it's almost 2020 and my keyboard software is actively suggesting non-words in my predictive text options like I actually might have meant to type them. Moreso, you'd think there would be an AI algorithm that would detect when you delete a word because it's not what you wanted, see what you settled on, and then autocorrect to that word in the future the next time your bumbling thumbs landed on those wrong parts of the keyboard again.

A lesson in vigilance - What is happening in the 'background' in your apps...?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 01:39 PM PST

First I'd link to thank the /r/Android[M] Mods for the explicit approval to post this. I have much respect them, their professionalism, and overall, their commitment to this sub and and it's members. -thank you.

I'm sure most everyone knows that apps can be nefarious in nature. The intent of this post is to provide a look behind the scenes of one such app, which only recently has made the news, and almost instantly pulled from most major repositories. Before this all unfolded, I received an early tip from an ethically concerned fellow redditor. Just the basic premise set off red flags instantly for high-potential for injection, so I dove in... and now I am publicly outing his treacherous app and malcode. It's important to say that this app broke many rules and DEV_APK standards as outlined by the offical Android APK and Developers Communities, also violating TOS on both the AppStore and G's Play Store.

Unfortunately, the media was too late, and their descriptions / statements were misleading and lacked some very important details. I can say that because by this time, I had already de-compiled the sources and completed my forensic investigation analysis. I had the evidence now plus the original samples. The results expose a very dark side of DEV, and implementations of AV evasion tactics, Social Engineering, advanced programming skills, phishing, pwning and persistence. This is not meant as a tutorial on how to hack things, nor a bug report or revelry, simply a disclosure of what I consider to be important and unique methods of exploitation. More importantly though... how was this online and able to persist for so long, with over half million users worldwide, didn't any other 'sec researcher' see the red flags...? idc really, this one fell into my lap. And in CIRT and SECOPS, it's my obligation to disclose what I discovered.

If you are interested, here is the post-analysis write-up: 0x00: Reversing Ghosty APK

tbh: I have no personal, monetary or professional gain in this, that is a condition of my approval to post here. It is intended to be an informational and educational resource, benefiting the /r/Android community and others. Providing an example of what is possible, even when nothing is happening.

    cheers...!!
