Where did I go wrong when replacing my CPU?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 05:14 AM PDT

Edit: right, I messed up when posting this. I pulled up and twisted the heatsink, not the CPU. I'm not that bad :-)

    Hi,

I have recently replaced my CPU, going from a 2600X to a 3700X. I have heard about the horror stories of removing the CPU with the cooler and bending the CPU pins in the process, so I took a methodical approach.

I warmed up the CPU first by running benchmarks for about one hour (mprime). That should've made it easier to remove the CPU since the paste is not that dry. I then

    • shut down the computer
    • removed the side panel
    • removed one of the CPU heatsink fans to access the screws
    • completely unscrewed the cooler

After that, I started to slowly pull up the CPU heatsink attached to the CPU, while doing a twisting motion. After about 10 seconds, the cooler and the CPU pop out, and I notice maybe 10-12 bent pins. I was able to later remove the CPU from the heatsink. There was a lot of paste everywhere, but I eventually cleaned it up.

So, what did I do wrong? I would like to avoid expensive mistakes whenever I change my CPU again.

Relevant parts for reference below. The paste I used was Arctic Silver 5.

    Thanks!

Do I really need to make the jump to 3rd gen ryzen?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 08:11 AM PDT

Hey all. I'm FINALLY upgrading my PC i built in 2012. I've been doing some research on new tech since it's been a while since I've kept up with all this. I've got a plan for every other component already BUT the CPU. Definitely going Ryzen.

3rd gen Ryzen is out and I really like the numbers it's putting up. But do I really NEED to go 3rd gen, or can I save a few bucks and go 2nd gen and a non x570 board? Here's what I do:

I use my system as mainly a gaming rig. No work, no streaming. MAYBE get into photo editing or video editing in the future. I have never overclocked anything. I don't see myself needing to overclock. I really just want to run 1080p gaming at above 60 fps, 144hz possibility.

I do however want to look to future proof for at least 5 plus years. My eyes have been set on either the 2700x or 3700x. But if you guys have any other recommendations based on the info I have hear, please let me know!

    Hello,

I am so happy to say that after 5-6 years of saving up I bought myself components for my first build.

    I am upgrading from i5-3350U, gtx 650, 12gb 1333mHz ram.

    https://i.imgur.com/6F0bz1b.jpg

    My current build is ryzen 7 3700x, powercolor reddevil 5700xt, 16gb 3600mhz.

I am so pumped to complete my first build.

Finalized AMD Ryzen 3 2200g family PC

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 07:09 AM PDT

Hello, Thanks to help from you guys on my first iteration of this build, I decided to come back with a Ryzen build. This build is for a good friend who wants the best bang for his buck and wants to help with the build process.

He will be using this computer as a "family" computer. It'll be mostly for his wife's schoolwork. Picture/Video/Music/Document storage. Internet browsing. Video streaming.

He will not be using it for gaming

As for a budget, he wants it less than $1k usd. We are in the US and will be purchasing mostly from Amazon or NewEgg. Unless there's a good sale found on r/buildapcsales

The main things he wants are wireless, "not a huge case", a CD Drive, and some "big storage."

I went microATX because these are the only affordable boards I can find that already have wireless adapters on the boards. I thought about a cheaper ATX board with a good wireless adapter, but everything ended up coming to about the same price as a micro atx wireless board.

The RAM kit is on Gigabyte's list of approved RAM, even though the MOBO only supports up to 2933. That's just what it will run at, which will be more than fine for them.

I just want to make sure I'm getting the best bang for my buck in a ~$700 build. Which it feels like I am

I might go with the MSI trio 2070 super if the normal doesn't come back in stock soon. So opinions on that card will be appreciated.

But my current PC is 9 years old at this point, it's got a Radeon HD 7770, I7 3770k, and 8 gigs of RAM (had 12 but a 4gb stick failed recently) so I'm looking at this as a new build to be my PC for a comparable time frame. Any tweaks y'all would make? I want to eventually do Index VR and 144hz competitive gaming (OW) if that matters. But at the start it'd be a gaming, streaming, recording, and editing rig. I don't do much productivity work outside of editing with premiere pro.

My main concern with this build is the PSU (since I've heard meh things about EVGA PSUs) and the SSD since I'm not sure if there's better deals out there.

I'd be using my old peripherals since I have a very nice mechanial keyboard and logitech mouse. I understand I'd need a different case for the MSI Gaming Trio 2070 SUPER.

My computer ‘won’t start correctly’ and I have no idea what to do

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 01:18 PM PDT

I built my computer just over a year ago with little to no problems until today. I decided to be frisky and change my motherboards profile from default to ASUS optimal (the like higher performance setting) and when I clicked save and exit the computer restarted and now after a series of screens the computer says automatic repair and is followed by diagnosing pc. It then says my pc didn't start properly and I have no idea what to do. I should note I'm running the home version of Windows 10 and it's an ASUS motherboard (I'm looking for model rn the manual is stored away) Please help...

Edit: the Motherboard is an ASUS Prime Z270-A

Edit 2: thanks everyone we're all good! :)

Moving to PC $1500+ build - Is this build any good?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 04:16 PM PDT

Looking at pulling the trigger on a semi-future proof build next weekend. The PC will mainly be used for gaming (Destiny 2, WoW, Apex etc.) and Adobe illustrator and will need wifi capability. It's my first time with PC, switching from console, and I've done research but its always good to have some more experienced eyes look it over.

Upgraded to RTX 2060, way worse performance than previous 1060

    AB350-Gaming
    16GB DDR4

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I upgraded my GPU to an RTX 2060 today and, for example, in Destiny 2 I've gone from ~90fps at 1080p/high to 40fps at the same settings. Benchmark results are poor

Haven't built a PC for about 15 years, is this a balanced build?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 03:59 PM PDT

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/YhZWZf

My main use will be for gaming. I'm mostly looking for feedback on if this is well balanced build? Should I be spending more on one component or is something here overkill relative to the rest of the build? I am completely out of the loop on video cards these days, so I just picked one with good memory and clock speed for what I thought was a good price range.

I also want to make this a very quiet build, so I'm looking for a AIO liquid cooler or maybe I will go with a EKWB kit.

    Thanks

Create a bootable USB using Rufus, formatted new hard drive, but when I try to boot up to install Windows it's just a black screen I don't even get to BIOS.

    *created sorry

I've done this before with several drives so I think I have the hang of it and am doing everything right. I think, unless I'm forgetting something.

By black screen I mean the computer is on and it's displaying a black screen not like the monitor is off.

I can feel the new drive purring so sata's working

It's an enterprise hdd if it matters. Any ideas? Thank you

    Gaming PC - AMD R5 3600 + RX5700xt + X570

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 03:31 PM PDT

    Hello BPC

So I'm putting together a parts list for a new gaming rig. I'm going to start purchasing part in Nov and hope to complete before the end of the year. I'm looking for good overall machine with high-value.

    I have a few questions:

    1. Motherboard - Asus TUF or Gigabyte Aorus
    2. Case - Does this system need water or just good air? I have an old Fractal Design Arc Midi R2
    3. CPU/GPU Cooler - See Above (I've always want to do an rgb AIO)
    4. Storage - M.2 Recommendations? I have data storage, just need game storage
    5. Power - Who doesn't suck theses day?
    6. Monitor - I need "dual" screen space for spreadsheets, but 4k-60.

RAM not running at Full speed

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 03:10 PM PDT

I got my new RAM to update my rig, but I checked my CPUZ metrics and it shows that is running at half the speed that its supposed to run at.

    https://ibb.co/fD6zrHq

I enabled XMP profile 1 on my mobo (MSI-b350m-Gaming Pro), but still no luck. I also made sure the Memory speed was selected specifically (3000Mhz) in the BIOS, but it stays at around 1499Mhz.

I am not very knowledgeable on how to get around this issue, I'm hoping someone is nice enough to help me out. Thanks.

    My specs are: Ryzen 2700x T-Force 2x8GB GTX 1060 6GB Windows10-64bit

Edit: I also made sure I am running the latest Bios Update Version 7A39v2NM(Beta version) Release Date 2019-07-01

    PC Underperforming

    i bought a PC about 9-10 months ago, (Ryzen 5 2600x, ASUS 1060 6GB, 16GB DDR4, 222GB SSD, Corsair CX550M power supply, ASROCK B450M-HDV)

it's worked amazing for about 7-8 months, i could run CSGO with 200-300fps, Minecraft with 200(with shaders) and Rainbow six siege with 100+- now CSGO runs with 70fps. MInecraft 50fps, and Rainbow six siege 40fps, my processor was 3.9GHZ, but now its 1.5GHZ. i have tried cleaning it (IRL) and deleted 20GB of files any ideas of why its so slow suddenly?

EDIT: Nevermind i found out that the power settings were on power saver /: and now everything works as it should.

My cpu will be a R5 2600 on a MSI B450 Tomohawk motherboard with 8gb DDR4 3000mhz ram (will upgrade to 16gb in November). If there is an Intel CPU that matches the R5 for a slightly cheaper price, please let me know because I am trying to definitely stay within my budget or even hopefully get a little below it. The budget is £675 without my peripherals. With peripherals, I'm willing to go up to £900. My monitor will be bought at the end of November.

Here in the UK, there are only 4 Vega 56 gpus that I can get and the cheapest one after the blower style reference card is the Red Dragon one for £275. For the exact same price, I can get a MSI Ventus XS 1660ti.

My pc will mostly be used for gaming on a couple triple AAA titles and a couple less demanding ones. The 3 games that I currently own on Steam are MW2, Rocket League and CS:GO. The other 3 games that I'll be buying when I get my pc are Rainbow Six Siege, the new CoD:MW and Destiny 2 with the Shadowkeep expansion.

I've checked out benchmarks for the Vega 56 on all 3 games but not for the 1660ti. On MW, I'll be hitting about 100-110 FPS on medium-high settings. On D2, I'll be hitting about 100 (although some tests showed frames in the 170s). As a result, I'm not sure on what my framerate will be on D2. On R6S, I'll be hitting about 140 FPS.

However, my setup will only have 3 case fans that are pretty cheap. As a result, I'd like to know what your experiences are if you've owned one or both of these gpus. How hot do they get? Does the performance get worse? How well does it perform? General stuff like this is all I need to know to make a proper decision.

I have all the parts that I have been researching for several months now coming in the mail and, I'm trying to get ready to put it all yoghurt into e they are here. Is there anything I should know about being a first time builder that wouldn't be common knowledge that I should look out for? I tried to pick parts that will be easily upgradable later and I have already ordered them.

Part list: Ryzen5 2600, MSI b450 pro carbon wifi, Corsair vengeance 16 gb DDR4-3000, western digital blue 500 go m.2ssd, NZXT h510( h500 was sold out and this was only a little more) gigabyte gtx 1660 6gb oc, EVGA supernova 750 80+ gold.

New pc won't get past bios

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 01:45 PM PDT

Ok brand new build...boots right to bios every time...it recognizes the cd drive but will not boot from the cd drive with a windows disk in it.

Tried a USB drive with the windows .iso from Microsoft and it won't boot off that either. The USB drive is recognized but after bios it either times out and blue screens or gets hung up on the gigabyte loading screen...

Never had a new build that would get to bios with no beeps or errors that would not just load up windows. Any ideas?

I made this list today and I think for the price it's pretty good. I feel like that I could swap out the 2070S for a 5700XT to save a couple bucks. I was also thinking about swapping the case or psu, but what do you guys think?

Edit: I didn't include my monitor bc I already have one, it's a LG 32GK650F-B if you wanted to know. PCPartPicker Part List

    Upgrading my i7 6700k, should I?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 01:01 PM PDT

Hey cool kids! I'm debating upgrading from my i7 6700k to one of those new fangled Ryzen CPUs, likely a 3800x or 3900x. My primary use is 2D animation (Toonboom Harmony) with a little gaming on the side. I do a lot of scene rendering to proof shots and it seems like each time I start a new show, they either add a ton of detail textures to the characters or want us to work in 4k rather than 1080. As such, rendering is getting really slow, in the realm of 5 mins for a standard shot

Since the software is multithreaded, I'm hoping that going from 8 logical cores to 16/24 will significantly speed up my rendering time.

Does anyone have similar experience with rendering or production software? Am I gonna throw away $800 CAD and hate myself?
