This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Top left pixel of my Monitor is a duplicate of the bottom rightest pixel???

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 06:46 AM PDT

Hello I have a really weird problem.

The 2 pixel on the upper left displays the same colors as the one on the bottom right.

I did a few tests, e. g. hovering my mouse over the bottom right pixel (top left pixel also turns white).

    https://imgur.com/a/C94rhuJ

Here you can see the top left pixels are white as I am hovering with my mouse over the bottom right pixels.

How can I fix this problem? It's not the whole row it's really just one or two pixels

    EDIT:

Monitor is the new Asus TUF VG27AQ

Thanks for the help so far! Sadly none of the things I tried fixed it.

OSD is 2 cm from corners so I can't see if it also occurs unplugged from any other devices.

Problem occurs with DP and HDMI.

Changing resolution and Hz doesn't do anything.

Tried to apply pressure on the pixels and JScreenFix.

There is no other PC I can test it with.

Finally got my Ryzen build to boot, having a bit of trouble getting Windows installed, can anyone help?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 05:07 PM PDT

    Ryzen 3600x

MSI X570 Gaming Pro Carbon Wifi

    Gskill Neo Trident 3600

Got core maxed to 4.25 and hitting 3600 on all sticks.

Win I try to reboot I see a blue window that says "Sorry, windows encounters a problem. We will restart for you"

Then nothing happens. Should I remake my stick? It's detected in the BIOS as being plugged in and first in line to boot from

Update 1: I can get through the process now, I select Install Now and get a Setup is Starting Message and then it starts the installation process but just restarts on "Gathering Files"

Update 2: Switched USB ports and now it's just sitting at "Gathering Files: 1%" for what seems like quite a while. Is it usually quite a long process?

    Edit: SOLVED!

Lesson learned: leave the board in its default state until you get Windows up and running.

Any good resources on the differences between GPU Manufacturers? Not AMD/Intel, like Gigabyte, Asus, MSI, Galax etc?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 08:41 AM PDT

As the title suggests. Or even some recommendations.

I'm looking at an RTX 2060 and have no idea which one to choose. Galax is consistently the cheapest in all the Australian online stores I've seen, so I'm sort of assuming they're shit...

Looking for suggestions for a 1440p/144hz IPS monitor (around $300)

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 05:16 PM PDT

Haven't been following pc hardware for a minute, last build I made was like 6-7 years ago)

Decided to build a new rig, targeting 1440p gaming.

I think I'd prefer an IPS panel since I might process photos, or do some graphic design work (although I usually use my iMac for that).

I guess semi-fast response time would be nice too (mainly playing shooters etc).

Good color reproduction, or at least ability to be calibrated to a decent extent via an external calibrator would be good to have too.

Looking for something around 24-27", don't have much space on my desk to fit a monster monitor)

Building around 5700xt, so I guess freesync would be awesome too.

Any advice would be appreciated :)

Just how accurate are 'system requirements'?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 05:05 PM PDT

I'm starting to plan out a new PC and have some questions around the recommended system specs for games and software, the main one of which is in the title.

What level of performance can I expect from both the minimum and recommended requirements? Is this the hardware needed to get 1080p 60 at around medium settings or just being able to run the game at all?

Also how do I decypher system specs that aren't really specific, especially when they list old and outdated parts as their system specs, how do I transfer that to their modern counterparts? (I quite often see Core 2 Duo's being a part of system specs)

If a game recommends 2 cores at 3.4ghz what would be the same level of performance at 4 or 6 cores? Does 4gb VRAM being recommended mean any GPU with that amount of VRAM or does it have to be a certain speed too?

I apologize for the mess of a rant that I've presented as legitimate questions but all this is just annoying me trying to figure out, any answers are much appreciated.

Reference GPU with aftermarket cooler vs. AIB card

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 09:38 AM PDT

As someone in the market for an RX 5700 (XT) for a new build, I've been noticing over at r/buildapcsales that many outlets are selling the reference 5700's at pretty insane sale prices for a card that just came out a few months back (eg. This deal for $290, but there are new ones popping up each day). As we approach Black Friday I imagine similar deals will get more frequent and possibly better.

Knowing that the main disadvantage of the reference GPUs are the noise & thermals - I was wondering what this commnity thinks about nabbing one of these reference cards and slapping on an external cooler like this puppy - essentially DIY-ing an AIB card for about the price of the reference one. I'm relatively handy with taking electronics apart and doing fine repair jobs, so from the description on Arctic's website this seems relatively easy to put on.

Does anyone have any experience with this sort of approach? Are there potential negatives that I'm not considering by going this route vs just plunking down the extra $$ on an AIB card? I know some AIBs use better VRMs that would assist with overclocking, but IIRC there's usually not that many differences unless you're trying to overclock the crap out of the card.

I know at $350 its essentially price parity since some AIB 5700 have been spotted that low on rare occoasions. but should the prices on reference models keep going down this approach is seeming more and more reasonable...

Help with failing motherboard or m.2. drive

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 01:13 PM PDT

I build a pc a year ago and now something is acting up. I have asus z370-f Motherboard and Windows installed on Samsung evo m.2 drive. It's been working great for a year, but since today my computer is having trouble booting. When I turn computer on it goes straigth to bios, but doesn't recognice my m.2 drive at all. After a couple of reboots I was able to boot to Windows again. Then the next time I had trouble again.

How can I figure out if I need a new m.2. drive or if the motherboard is faulty?

I'm used to seeing "no boot media found" when a hdd or ssd fails, but with m.2 the computer just boots into bios.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Asus b450i not working at all with a ryzen 3700x

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 05:19 PM PDT

Asus rog b450i not booting at all with a ryzen 3700x

    Hi guys,

It's been a frustrating week since I received my rma'ed gigabyte x570i which happens to be DOA. I used the blackridge cooler thinking it had the am4 bracket updated but it broke one of the chips on the board and now I can't return it to newegg.

Fast forward to today, I purchased an Asus b450i from Memory Express (Canadian version of microcenter) and they did a bios update to support 3rd gen ryzen. I came home and set things up but when I pressed the power button, the motherboard lights up and the PSU fan kicks in but nothing else works.

I tried reseating ram which is a crucial ballistic sport, checking the pins of the PSU cable if they're secured all the way, change PSUs, change ram to a g.skill trident z RGB, made sure the PSU switch was on, unplugging the power cable from the wall outlet and plugged it back in and even removed the cooler and tried a different one.

I'm at a lost now and I really need your guys help. I feel terrible after losing $300 cad down the toilet from the gigabyte one.

    Cheers!

FX9590 vs i5 2500K for a friends first PC, with a GTX 780 using parts I have spare

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 10:30 AM PDT

Looking to put a PC together for a friend as his 1st PC to game on, out of the spare parts I have I'm not sure whether to go with an FX 9590 or i5 2500K. I own both cpus and both have compatible motherboards and I will be using a GTX 780

Only needed parts would be another stick of 8gb ram to reach 16gb total, a 1tb SSD and a windows 10 home key (about £200 total off amazon).

The only decision really is between cpus, FX9590 VS i5 2500K

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

He wants to play CSGO mainly, which I know is cpu dependant,

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1080p 60fps, as high as possible while maintaining 60fps. Low graphics at 60fps is fine

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

parts are already owned/in process of being purchased

    Any tips appreciated thanks!

I think I'm ready to buy...

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 05:09 PM PDT

    Link to pcpartpicker

So after a month of research and saving up money. I'm finally ready to pull the trigger. Over all I think these parts make up a pretty good first build, but I wanted to check in with you all to see if I might be missing something. What I'm looking for in my PC is a split between a work station for programming and school work along with some gaming. I'm going with the Steel Legend because I need the wi-fi; unfortunately my living situation is limiting my ability for a wired connection. Also I want to avoid the bios issues with the older mother boards. One issue that I'm a bit iffy on is the memory I've chosen; it's not on the QVL list. From what I understand it shouldn't be too much of an issue. I ran into some luck when my mom gave me her old HDD. The money I'm saving from not having to buy an extra one I'm using to get an NVME ssd for the OS and my main games. As for the video card, I'm hoping the sapphire RX 580 will be good for a few years and maybe upgrade down the line if I need to. The case I went with is sleek and I like the sleek design. Lastly, the PSU seems to be a great deal for the price.

I've had a ton of fun obsessing over all the details when it comes to building this PC, sifting through old posts, watching youtube reviews, and reading articles. This community is such a great corner of the internet and you all are always willing to help with any question I had. I hope to make my next reddit post here from my new PC and let y'all know how it went. Thanks for everything guys! Any feed back is greatly appreciated.

    Gigabyte B450 Mobo Question

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 05:08 PM PDT

    Will a Gigabyte B450 Aorus M be a good motherboard for a Ryzen 5 3600 and a gtx 1660 ti?

    What's the difference between i5 and i7 CPU's?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 01:21 PM PDT

I am building a pc and I don't know much about CPU's, I was wondering what the difference is between i7's and i5's because I have a budget of about 400 CAD for a CPU and there's not many i7's for that price but plenty of i5's with what I would assume to be better speeds. Fan hub, can anyone help me?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 05:07 PM PDT

It's my first time building a pc. I'm just curious how to use something like this: https://imgur.com/GXAcSZY

I already bought it online and I'm just waiting for it to arrive. Alongside, I also bought 6 4-pin fans (2 exhaust on top, 2 intake in front, 1 on the side for intake, and another one in the back as exhaust).

Correct me if I'm wrong. So, I'll power that hub with a SATA coming from my PSU. Then I'll remove my CPU fan cord from the CPU header and connect it to the orange interface. The included PWM cable will go the to chassis fan header and those black interfaces are for the case fans.

Thank you and I'm sorry for my English.

My New 144hz Setup has Ruined Me

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 10:04 AM PDT

So before my Junior year in college started, I finally had saved up enough money from working to build my own PC. With you guys' help, I built a really awesome rig that I've just loved playing games and working on. With it, I also bought my first 144hz monitor. After 9 hours of constructing my first build ever (and love-hating every minute of it), it booted up completely, first try! Well, besides 1 fan (which was left unplugged accidentally).

It goes without saying that the difference between 60hz and 144hz is, how should I put it... noticeable. Before starting college, I had bought a laptop with a gtx 1060 inside to be able to run pretty much any game I played. I love this thing, too, its been great for school work and playing games.

However, now that I have been using my desktop for a considerable amount of time, really falling in love with 1440p and 144hz, I find playing games (mainly Rocket League) at 60hz to be more difficult. I'm at home for fall break currently, so I decided to bring my laptop with me so I could continue the grind (actually playing in a LAN in NYC for my school this winter, but that's another story). I was playing some games last night and I just was really struggling to perform how I was on my desktop. The difference was so blatant and shocking to my eyes, I couldn't even handle playing for more than a few rounds.

I almost wish I hadn't bought a 144hz monitor, because now I can't enjoy playing games on my laptop as much. It's still fine for some games I play, but fast-past games like RL or some FPS's, it is stunningly different. I don't regret my purchase at all, in fact I'm really glad and proud of myself for building my own PC and happy how it runs, but I'm just bothered by how much I'm bothered by not enjoying my laptop as much, if that makes sense.

Sorry for the long post/rant, it is just something that has been on my mind. Any of you experience the same thing? How can I enjoy playing games at 60hz?

EDIT: Here's my setup if you are interested: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/SatisfiedOnion/saved/Zzvmgs Pictures of the build in my room when I moved in this August: https://imgur.com/a/eVnSpMa

Motherboard Temp Readings WAY Off (6553.1° C)

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 11:37 AM PDT

Edit: So it turns out I dropped TWO screws and one was still under the mobo. All is well again.

Hey, so finished my build a week ago and it's been running fine. My secondary SSD got here today so I went to stick it in and accidentally dropped a screw behind the mobo, so I took the entire mobo out and retrieved the screw. Put everything back together, booted up, initialized the drive, everything looked good... except my mobos PSC LEDs were on and indicating an issue with my CPU and DRAM. Everything looks good on my hardware monitoring software, CPU stress tested perfectly, so I reboot into bios and... wow, the sensors are crazy off.

CPU/SB: 6553.1°C, voltage at 4.080V (both impossible) M/B: -1°C (again, impossible cause it's definitely not in the freezer) Fans are reading 65535 RPM, no way.

What the hell is going on?

TL:DR Unplugged everything and installed a new SSD, plugged everything back in and got the drive set up, now my mobo thinks it's hotter than sun.

    Here's my build info btw:

Best $150-ish ATX mid case with a 5.25" drive bay?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 10:35 AM PDT

Starting to lay out my next PC build in anticipation of Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales. Plan is to run a Ryzen 3600, x570 mobo, and RX 5700 XT or RTX 2060 (still undecided). I'm not a hardcore OC'er, I typically do a known safe OC and then just let things be. Air cooling, no concerns for radiator fitment or anything.

I will be moving a lot of components over from my current 2011 build, and I want to move over the internal optical drive since I do a fair amount of messing with 1990's-2000's PC games and a lot of CD/DVD burning. Unfortunately, it seems like all the really highly-rated budget cases these days have no optical drive bays. I'd like to get something that's around $150-ish or less; decent airflow is a must. I'm not TOO concerned about cosmetics but would vastly prefer something clean and utilitarian looking, the crazy alien-looking cases really turn me off.

These are the three I was kind of looking at, any commentary on these, or is there something else I should consider?

I should also add that I'm not 100% opposed to going mini-ATX or whatever if there are some great cases that would work for me, but I've never done a compact build before and get the impression ATX mid is still the way to go for an average build.

New PC has random FPS drops on all games

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 10:27 AM PDT

My new PC is about 2 weeks old. A few days ago I started getting random fps drops and I can't figure whats causing it. This has been mainly happening on CSGO, LoL, DbD, Fortnite, Apex Legends, and TFT. My frames go from about 120+ to 25 for a few seconds and it seems random. I tried lowering my ingame settings but the frames still drop no matter my res. I'm sure there's a simple solution that I'm missing so I am open to any and all suggestions.

    My Specs are:

    CPU: Ryzen 5 2600 w/ stealth cooler

Graphics: 1660Ti msi ventus xs 6gb

    MOBO: msi b450 tomahawk

    RAM: t team force 16gb (2x 8GB) 3000 MHz

I have a new Ryzen 3700x build, is CPU cooling necessary?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 02:08 PM PDT

Just wondering if running a cpu fan or liquid cooling is really even necessary for a gaming build. I am not planning on overclocking much, but the main use for the computer is gaming and video/3d processing.
