My 10 year old laptop just died:( Posted: 02 Oct 2019 07:15 PM PDT So, I'm in need of a good laptop. My budget is around $650 US dollars, maybe a little more. I'm looking for something will run DAW's as best as possible, might do a little gaming too, but nothing too fancy. Also i eventually plan to learn 3d animation on blender and video editing. Just looking for something that will last some 4+ years and that will be able to handle the workload of learning the basics of 3d animation, but not too much for like full on rendering of movies, just enough to be able to run them smoothly. Also i need it to fit comfortably in my backpack. Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2019 04:33 AM PDT Hi, I'm choosing a replacement for my dying laptop. I am a master's student and I would need the laptop for school, work and gaming. The two laptops I am considering right now are the Acer predator triton 500 with a i7-9750H and a 2070 max Q or a dell XPS 15 with a i9-9980HK but with a 1650. The other components are pretty similar. In my case, should I go for something with a better CPU or a better GPU as all-rounder laptop that can also play AAA games? Is there any other laptop around 1800£ that I should consider? I am looking for something slick and not too showy (RGB, weird colours or shapes) [link] [comments] |
Looking for a good laptop for programming projects and music production Posted: 02 Oct 2019 10:22 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: USA, preferably around $700. I'm a little flexible though. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 would be great but not entirely necessary. Specs are probably my top priority. How important is weight and thinness to you Not super important. It will sit on my desk most of the time. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. The bigger the better. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'll be running FL Studio and possibly doing some video editing. I'll also be running Visual Studio and possibly some other IDEs depending on what kinds of personal projects I decide to take on. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'm not a gamer. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good keyboard would be nice. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I basically just need something with good enough specs for my music and programming projects. For someone who works in tech I know an embarrassingly small amount about computer hardware lol. I do some work in UX design so a 2 in 1 laptop would be awesome for sketching. I would love to get a suggestion for both a 2 in 1 laptop and a standard one so I can compare the trade offs. Thanks in advance for any suggestions! [link] [comments] |

I need a new laptop for overall all purposes Posted: 03 Oct 2019 12:20 AM PDT Necessities:- SSD storage (or hybrid is also fine), 8GB DDR4 ram, minimum 2GB graphics card (Nvidia or AMD), Intel i5 8th gen or i7 8th gen, FHD display, lightweight, Windows 10 Home OS. (It Would be awesome if there is a touchscreen display but not desperately needed. A 2 in one would be even better). Budget- Around 500$ to 800$ ( 35,000 to 60,000 rupees). I will go for the higher mark only if it has really good features. Usage- Moderate Gaming, Coding, Media playing. Please recommend a laptop that satisfies atleast all the above conditions. Looking for a backpack friendly Laptop Posted: 03 Oct 2019 12:12 AM PDT First a moment of silence for my C100p Chromebook, i got you years ago at a best buy for 70$ because of a labeling mistake, you will be missed. Now that's out the way Ive come here seeking advice, im looking for something for mostly fun that can easily fit in my backpack, so 15inch and below, ill be using eBay unless someone suggest a good alternative, my budget max is around 250 USD. I like Lenovos and was looking at the Thinkpads, i have a T40 i still keep in use, so i though something like a t440, (209 USD for a good one), they look great and are cheap but are too thicc for my bag. (Id love a think thinkpad that isn't chonky but haven't found a thinner one in my price range) But maybe i should stick with Chromebooks, i like the chrome environment and they making them with decent specs these days, so the Pixel Chromebook at 189 USD looks nice and should fit nicely Any other suggestions or questions? Thanks for your time. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Oct 2019 11:58 PM PDT I've gone down the rabbit hole of comparing/researching laptops. I'm deep in here man, I'm close to going mental. Every laptop seems to have its issues/drawbacks. I've been to the Microsoft store and Best Buy to get hands on with laptops I've researched , and thank god I did. Laptops II thought I wanted I ended up not liking. I've finally settled on two the SL3 and Yoga C940. Issues and thermal problems seem minimal on both. Keyboard is a big factor for me and I was surprised that most premium laptop keyboards are pretty shit. Best keyboard hands down was on the ThinkPad line . Nothing really came close. For all the talk online of how great the SL keyboard is I've got to say I was let down a bit . It feels a bit cheap and light . Like a child's toy piano vs a real piano . It had an overall loose feeling. Beyond that the price point and design is spot on. The screen is 3/2 aspect ratio with better than 1080 p screen. I forget the number 2250x 1500. Beautiful machine. The Lenovo yoga c930 had a decent keyboard I would rate it slightly better than the xps 13 and Hp Spectre . I wish it had a bit more travel but it feels solid .Something about the U shape keys I really like. I can't pinpoint exactly why. The sound bar music was amazing . Best in class for sure. I use headphones most of the time so not a big deal but a nice touch . The screen is unfortunately dim and color is not the greatest which is why I'm hoping the C940 changes that. This laptop overall looks very professional . I would like the 10th gen Ice lake chip with Iris graphics so I can at least play WOW and Dota when I'm not doing homework . Both do tick off those boxes. Lastly I'm struggling with resolution .Comparing both base models the SL had the better screen and color though the yoga has a 4K option with better color and brightness .I hear a lot of people say online that it 4k doesnt make a big difference , but when I compared the 1080p vs 4K on an xps 13 I was in awe in how much richer and sharper it looked. (Xps13 was ruled out. It's too small and too many thermal/WiFi other issues) So with all that what do you guys/gals think I should go with . Have another suggestion? Would love to hear it. Thanks . Update: Sorry for not following the format .New to reddit. I'm from the U.S . I don't have a budget really.I will be using this laptop for school , light coding (learning ) , I love taking pictures and posting editing them for fun. I surf the web and watch a lot of films . I would like to do light gaming. [link] [comments] |
$700 (canadian dollars) laptop for school Posted: 03 Oct 2019 03:38 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: Canada, around $600-$700 canadian dollars on either best buy canada or amazon canada Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 would be great but not entirely necessary. Specs are probably my top priority. How important is weight and thinness to you Decently important since I will be using it for college Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. around 15 inches Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'll be using it to write docx files, regular browsing, streaming and occasional gaming If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Just a bit of CSGO and LoL Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A decent keyboard and good build quality if possible Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Basically I need a good mix of a laptop that is light but not so light to the point the specs will suffer greatly. I already have a gaming laptop (which is too heavy for school) and a gaming desktop so I play my more graphic intensive games on there so I'll only play occasional CSGO or LoL on this laptop [link] [comments] |
Buy a Laptop (Refurbished 2013 Macbook, 2014 Mac Mini or PC) or build a desktop? Posted: 02 Oct 2019 11:46 PM PDT Hey guys. So I'm a software engineering college student in final year doing Mobile App Development for Android and iOS. Currently I'm using a Lenovo Ideapad 320 running a Celeron with 8 GB of RAM and a 1TB HDD + 500GB SSD config. I live on campus and there is an iMac lab on campus with relatively easy access 24/7. I want to get a new computer because this Celeron is hindering my Android build times on Windows. It doesn't support Linux all that well either (BIOS and driver compatibility issues) and I don't like having to switch between Linux and Windows to do development and do light gaming or use Windows-only applications. I have to go into the BIOS to switch between Linux/Windows every time because the grub2 bootloader can't install. I want a powerful enough system to do Android development, possibly iOS development, heavier gaming (Far Cry 5, LoL, GTA V at 60FPS regardless of quality settings) and graphic designing My question is, should I build a desktop to do this, invest in an earlier model Mac, buy a used laptop or buy a newer low range PC? My budget is maximum 5000 Chinese Yuan * **Total budget and country of purchase:** China | 5000 Yuan * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Best specs and built quality * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Light as possible. Will be carrying it to classes * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Either dual boot with Windows/Linux or Mac * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** N/A * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** CS6, Illustrator * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Far Cry 5, Naruto UNS4, DB Fighter Z, Dolphin Emulator * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** No chiclet keyboards, good resale value * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I really filled this form out in case a laptop is the general consensus. I have a PC already but I wish to upgrade [link] [comments] |

Gaming Laptop for my son ~ £1500 UK Posted: 03 Oct 2019 03:19 AM PDT
I want to replace my son's aging laptop. Budget is around £1500 in the UK and I want it to last a decent couple of years. He pretty much only plays Fortnite at the moment, but things can change. I'm torn between which type of GPU to be looking at. Older ones with a GTX 1070 seem to be decent money such as the MSI GS65 8RF from Scan for £1398 ( https://www.scan.co.uk/products/156-msi-gs65-stealth-thin-8rf-009-144hz-fhd-i7-8750h-16gb-ddr4-256gb-nvme-ssd-8gb-gtx-1070-max-q-tb3?gclid=Cj0KCQjwuNbsBRC-ARIsAAzITucmRATwV7sMt6V-tuW5AeVGaiv5lj0qUnFD5b-kG_riIi_TC-ZkNLsaAtxuEALw_wcB ) but should I be trying the stretch the budget for a RTX 2070 equipped one instead? I do like the look of the thin MSI laptops, they seem to have a decent form factor and not like the tradition bulky monsters. Any help most gratefully received. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2019 03:17 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: up to $2000 AUD but would prefer it being less. * Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't really care for 2 in 1 that much, but I don't dislike it anyway. I need decent battery life (will last 5-6 hours for school) * How important is weight and thinness to you? Would like a decently light laptop, doesn't have to be paper-thin though. * Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or MacOS, heck even ChromeOS if I can do basic photo edits on there (so Android app capability is a must) * Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 12" to 15", but if you're suggesting something 14 or 15" I'd like it to still have a small footprint. * Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. A bit of very basic photo editing, otherwise just regular school things. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A* Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Definitely want a good build, metal, and if we're talking vanity I'm loving the Razer Blade and Macbook Pro designs, so something along those lines look-wise would be awesome - just maybe not those particular laptops because the Razer is a bit out of budget and I'd like at least one normal USB port, or a cheap way to get one without a huge dongle I have to carry around. Definitely needs an SSD. * Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. N/A [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Oct 2019 10:36 PM PDT Hello im looking for a simple docking solution for my laptop! Something that can support 4k 60hz and possibly handle power delivery to the laptop (if that exists) any suggestions are appreciated. Whatever is the most reasonable solution! Here's the laptop I have ASUS ROG Zephyrus S Ultra Slim Gaming PC Laptop, 15.6" 144Hz IPS Type, Intel Core i7-8750H CPU, GeForce GTX 1070, 16GB DDR4, 512GB PCIe SSD, Military-Grade Metal Chassis, Win 10 Home - GX531GS-AH76 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G5Z9H8R/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_QzyLDbJN2REFF [link] [comments] |
A GTX 1660 Ti is good enough for 144hz - Rant Posted: 02 Oct 2019 06:45 AM PDT I've read too many threads with comments that people think that a GTX 1660 ti can't push 144hz in new titles. I sold my laptop with a 60hz screen because I felt that the hardware was a waste with the screen. Apex Legends : 120 fps Far Cry 5 (Ultra) : 90 fps And I am confident that in everything else you can get 90+ when you tweak the settings. And that the better screen is really, really worth it Share your opinion Update : So I've also come to understand that different people have different needs and things that they are used to. Yes the 1660 ti is not the best graphics card under the sun, but it really runs most current games at much higher than 60 fps, therefore a 60 hz display just isnt enough to get the most out of your system. Posted: 03 Oct 2019 02:07 AM PDT Hi guys, I'm choosing between this 2 laptops for programming, a lil bit of gaming, and personal use. I would probably use this laptop for another 5 years, so I want to decide which is the best? Acer Swift 3 (SF314-56-79FH) Or Acer Aspire 5 A515-54G-74G0 You can translate the site in English for you to understand it easily. Acer Aspire 5 A515-54G-74G0, has Core i7-8565U, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 1TB HDD, and has a GPU - Nvidia GeForce MX250 for 1'057 CHF, compare to Acer Swift 3 (SF314-56-79FH) with Core i7-8565U, 12 GB RAM, 256 SSD, 1 TB HDD for 998.90 CHF Obviously, Acer Aspire 5 A515-54G-74G0 wins in terms of specs, but I'm worried about the casing as well because I would probably use this for a long time before buying a new one again. Acer Aspire 5 seems to has been built with plastic, but Acer Swift 3 built with aluminum housing. I have an Acer Laptop (Acer Travelmate) now that my Mom bought in 2014 which is built with plastic and it's quite damaged now probably due to an abused usage, the paint has so many scratches, and the housing has opened. Posted: 03 Oct 2019 01:35 AM PDT Price range 1000-1200 USD No specific programming languages Best specs for the money No gaming needed Good battery life Form factor and lightweight is important At least full hd screen OS mac/windows [link] [comments] |

<$1k
Best gpu/CPU specs for the money. With preference to amd cpus.
Irrelevant.
Windows, Linux, or none. Will dual boot Windows and Linux.
Destiny 2, gimp, node, docker, wsl, vmware.
Destiny 2 at 1080p 60fps with reasonably good 1% and 0.1% lows.
Build quality is my main concern as I will be traveling with this laptop. A good backlit keyboard and 10 key pad would be very nice too.
I'm mainly looking for the cheapest laptop that can play destiny 2 with 0.1% lows above 60fps and not thermal throttle during hours long sessions. Anything else is optional and I probably won't value the extra cost as worth it. E.g. $200 difference for a ten key pad is not worth it. I expect to replace/extend ram and storage so a 4gb laptop with 160gb hdd is probably a better value than paying the manufacturer markup on 16gb and a tb ssd. Soldered ram and storage is a hard pass. Thanks for reading! [link] [comments] |
Torn between two laptops. (Acer Helios 300 vs Eluktronics Mech 17) Posted: 02 Oct 2019 01:00 PM PDT I had basically settled on an Acer Helios 300 for $1099, but have seen positive things about the eluktronics laptops in here. I like the price point of the Helios, but.... For 250$ more, I could get the 17" Eluktronics Mech 17 laptop (oddly currently priced the same as the 15") This is the one, I plan on getting. Thermals are important to me, used for audio editing, video editing, and gaming. The only reason I am considering the Eluktronics is due to the praise ive seen, and while a 15" inch display is serviceable, 17" sounds better ;) The RGB keyboard is irrelevant, but a nice bonus. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |

College student need help deciding on a 15" laptop for CAD and gaming, budget ~$2,000 Posted: 02 Oct 2019 02:43 PM PDT Currently I have a Thinkpad X1 Carbon 6th gen, which I really like except I've realized I'd like something with a dedicated gpu that I could game on, mainly because I don't want to deal with dragging my desktop to an internship again. My ideal specs would be: great build quality, 4-6 core i7, 80+Wh battery, 60Hz 1080p screen, <4.5lbs and a decent gpu. I'm mainly looking to play newer stuff like Borderlands 3 and Battlefield and don't mind turning down settings. So far I've narrowed it down to: -X1 Extreme: overall seems good and I do like my current Thinkpad. Does anyone know how big the gap will be between the gen 1 1050ti and gen 2 1650? -MSI Prestige 15: Seems pretty close to what I want but I'm a little put off by not being able to find reviews of it. -MSI GS63 w/ 1660ti: Seems like a good value but I'm not sold on chassis rigidity or serviceability. I've considered the MAG-15 but I'm not really comfortable dropping that kind of money on an unknown brand. I've also considered the RB15 but with an extended warranty the advanced model would be too expensive. Anyone have any thoughts on that/anything I'm missing? I'm leaning towards the X1 Extreme but can't decide between gen 1 and gen 2 Thanks! [link] [comments] |

My Laptop just broke, need a new one ASAP Posted: 02 Oct 2019 06:56 PM PDT I'm writing this on my desktop, which thank god I have, but I now need to replace my HP Budgetbook I got a little over a year ago that just a few minutes ago, totally came apart. It was made out of cheap plastic, and getting worn, so I had been researching laptops for months, saving money, wasn't hoping on replacing it until after the holidays. I'm a CIS student whose job requires me to do a lot of coding on occasion and server management, generally most higher preforming laptops should be able to handle that. Budget: $1000, I can go over, but wouldn't really like too. Requirements:
