Trying to install fedora but it's freezing Posted: 26 Oct 2019 09:19 AM PDT I recently purchased a new SSD, wanted to install fedora on it. I created the boot media, launched info the live mode and it was freezing to a point where it is unusable. The mouse is only moveable for a second or less at a time, then it freezes for 2 seconds. I can barely click anything, type anything, etc. I don't know what steps to take as I haven't used Linux in years, and when I did I used Ubuntu and opened the terminal once. I tried opening the terminal, but it's too laggy to type my password. After typing a 4 letter name, I have to wait 20 seconds for it to show up. I have a 144hz freesync monitor, Razer huntsman keyboard, and Razer mamba TE mouse if that makes a difference. Internals are an i5 9600k, rtx 2070, 16gig of ram, and that's all I think could impact it. I was able to install it, but got the same problem even without live media, so I tried installing fedora 31 with a different external thumb drive and same problem. Anyone know what's up? Posted: 26 Oct 2019 08:23 AM PDT I've got a HDD with two partitions, one NTFS for Windows stuff, and Ext4 for Linux stuff. This is the storage HDD. I dual boot with W7 and Debian on two separate SSDs. I had a scenario where I wasn't sure if when I booted into W7 and ran the defragment software on the HDD what partition it would defrag. Would it do both, or only the NTFS partition since W7 can't technically see the Ext4 partition? To my knowledge Ext4 doesn't need defragmenting. Anybody have experience with this? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Oct 2019 11:37 AM PDT I am ready to get into Linux gaming and learn Linux more Linux in the process. But I am not off to a great start. When I try to boot from my USB, I see the Ubuntu purple for a brief second then I get error: AHCI controller unavailable In BIOS I checked to make sure that RAID was off and AHCI was on. I updated my SATA AHCI Controller driver. And still get the error. CPU: Intel i5-3570k Motherboard: ASROCK Z77 Extreme 4 GPU: Nvidia GTX 1060 [link] [comments] |

I am having problems running scripts Posted: 26 Oct 2019 10:08 AM PDT From what I understand you can run scripts from directories that are mentioned in the PATH variable anywhere on the computer, but it doesn't seem to work for me. For example, let's say I write a script which I name I then run the script by typing Output from I don't get what I'm doing wrong so I would be thankful if anyone would help me out. Posted: 26 Oct 2019 10:25 AM PDT I'm currently trying to fix some GPU drivers I installed for my RX 580 running KDE Neon 5.17. Whenever I try to do anything related to it I get this:
How do I fix this process? I should clarify that I'm trying to uninstall the pro drivers and install the open variants. Other related specs: Ryzen 5 3600 16 GB RAM 4 TB total HDD space (2 HDD's) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Oct 2019 10:44 AM PDT I used the default disks thing that comes with KDE to format a hard drive.
After this (which is what I do to format drives) I realized I could not copy files into the drive. Turns out I did not have permissions because owner is root. This puzzled me. I don't remember this being what happened. I downloaded Gparted and did the same steps (GParted is what I used to use). Same results. In the end I just changed the ownerships from root to my user recursively (there were no files but a lost+found folder which I don't know what is for). Now I can copy and paste into the drive. Was this a bad thing to do? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Oct 2019 07:09 PM PDT I have an old plastic MacBook from 2008 which can still browse the web and handle other simple tasks rather impressively. However, it's stuck at OS X Lion and so security wise, it's a ticking time bomb, not to mention that most software developers dropped support for it years ago. It isn't my main computer (I have a far newer Mac), but it would be a shame to just throw this one away, especially since it was my first Mac, and it still seems very capable. I've been looking into installing Linux on it (instead of OS X) but the whole process is rather alien to me. The MacBook has 4gb RAM and a Core2Duo, and I think I would like to run Ubuntu on it, but which version I should/could use and how I would go about installing it is beyond me I'm afraid. I also have concerns about drivers and the device's compatibility in general. Any advice from someone who knows more about this than me would be very much appreciated. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 26 Oct 2019 01:10 PM PDT I dug my old machine out from under my bed (I used to use it for crypto mining but now I wanna use it for linux/netsec-learning) and am stuck on....trying to connect to the internet!! This is a fun one because there are several limitations I have going against me:
So, how can I connect to my wifi network using only ifconfig? Yes, I do have a working wifi pcie card and it is connected. [link] [comments] |
Manjaro for first-time Linux user. Bad idea? Posted: 26 Oct 2019 01:09 PM PDT Well not a complete beginner when it comes to Linux, as my university's computers use Linux and I use those pretty often for work (CS major). I want to eventually move to Arch, but I rather get used to Linux first, and then make the jump to Arch. I am considering installing Manjaro on my laptop which already has Windows 10 on it. Ideally, I would want to keep my Windows 10, but boot into Linux most of the time. Is this a good idea? i have heard that Manjaro is not the most beginner friendly. [link] [comments] |

No irq handler for vector errors on boot Posted: 26 Oct 2019 08:50 AM PDT Hey, I am getting the errors on boot every time but i can run the os normally, it just seems to slow down my boot time. I am running Manjaro with XCFE. I have tried kernels Linux 5.3.6-1 and 5.2.19_rt11-1. I have found some fixes online which uses the boot parameter "pci=nomsi, noaer" but i don't know how to change them. Does anyone know a fix these errors? [link] [comments] |
Optical Drive Changing Mount Point on Reboot Posted: 26 Oct 2019 06:35 AM PDT I'm running Debian 9 on VMware Player and am having trouble with the optical drive mount point. After each reboot my optical drive changes it mount between /dev/sr1 and /dev/sr0. How I make it a permanent mount point after each reboot? [link] [comments] |
A weird thing with my new debian 9 stable install Posted: 26 Oct 2019 11:58 AM PDT So I finnaly took the big leap and installed GNU/Linux on my laptop and everything went smoothly, but when I logged in and tried to install some programs from the software center and the terminal, then my computer would automatically log me out and not save my work. This has become very annoying, but i have installed a couple things without the logout happening. I can't figure out how to fix it and as I said earlier, IT'S VERY ANNOYING. Any help would be nice. Edit: for context I'm using a Dell Inspiron N5030 running an Intel Celeron and using the internal graphics. I'm also dual booting with win7 so that might be a problem. It has 2 gigabites of that can be upgraded. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 26 Oct 2019 01:33 AM PDT Hello there, I am Not able to install SAP in Linux mint. Is there any easy way to do it. SAP is essential for my work. It is the only reason stopping me to shift to Linux. [link] [comments] |
Question about how data centers work at somewhat of a lower level Posted: 26 Oct 2019 01:19 AM PDT I am curious how a data center works at a lower level (like how the hardware and software work together). Like how does a data center for Amazon Web Services work. Like how does a rack, which is just a motherboard, processor, ram, hard, etc. in a case that can be mounted on a shelving unit, get installed and set up so that EC2 instances, S3 buckets, etc. can be loaded on it, as well as how are the hard drives capable of being "hot swappable", etc. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Oct 2019 12:42 AM PDT added another disk and moved contents from old disk to new disk and made a symlink that points to the new location. But I've got 200 or so more files to move and I'm getting a no space left on disk error. DF -h shows 1T left of space. Any thoughts? UPDATE: df -h and du -sh /mnt are similar. Both show 1T as used. Manjaro hanging/lag/non responsive/disk at 100% Posted: 25 Oct 2019 05:56 PM PDT tldr; at bottom I have Manjaro XCFE 18.0 installed on a 2014 Lenovo laptop w/ 8gb ram in a 5 month old SSD. The laptop has performed well with Manjaro on it and was working fine this morning until I set it down and walked away for a bit. It locked itself because I was away from my desk for longer than expected. I had some paperwork to attend to when I got back, so I didn't immediately touch my laptop. While I was working, my laptop's fans started spinning hard which I found odd since the laptop was locked/not in use and nothing intense was running when I left it. I hit the spacebar to wake the screen and found that it didn't illuminate so I tried the trackpad instead. Two seconds later, the screen illuminated. Odd. I went to type my password to unlock it and found the keyboard non responsive. I went to try to click the login text box to ensure it was in focus/selected and found the mouse consistently 2-3 seconds slow to respond to my touch. Uh oh. That's when I noticed my laptop's "Disk Activity" light was solid-on. I tried moving my cursor to the bottom right hand corner to hit the power button and put it back to sleep, hoping that would interrupt whatever high-use task it was trying to perform. Wrong. The clicks wouldn't register at all, so I closed the lid in hopes that would trigger it to sleep. It didn't. *sweating intensifies* I let it sit for another two minutes and the lid-close finally caught up and it went to sleep. I opened it again after it cooled down a minute later and the disk went straight back to 100% and the trackpad was crawling slow. Somehow it logged me right in despite no password being entered. The windows I had open were non-responsive except to tapping the minimize icon. Telegram refuses to minimize. The trackpad finally stopped responding and the system has fully stopped responding, but the disk light is still on and the fans are still spinning from 50-100% speed. Subsequent lid-closes have no effect. I can't summon a terminal or anything else to try to diagnose the issue and I have unsaved work that would take hours to reproduce if at all. Is there anything I can try without resorting to yanking the battery out and popping in a live-USB to diagnose? tldr; Manjaro hung, disk at 100%, keyboard and trackpad non responsive, what's left to try? edit: plugged in an M/KB and got some response from it, an error log popped up a minute later that looks like kernal diagnostics almost, followed by another that said "failed to fork: cannot allocate memory". Which is weird because I still had 1gb of ram free when I walked away and the SSD is only 1/4 full! edi2: someone responded but it seems they're either shadowbanned or automod killed their comment. :( [link] [comments] |
