| Upgrading an Acer aspire s3 - worth it? Posted: 27 Oct 2019 11:46 AM PDT So I thought about buying a new laptop, but I have an old Acer Aspire S3 which has performs like a comatose sloth by now. I opened it up and cleaned out the fan already, but it didn't change much except it isn't as loud as it used to be. I thought about replacing the battery, switching to a ssd, reinstalling windows all together and wiping everything from it. Would cost around 130 €. Will that make a difference? | Posted: 27 Oct 2019 11:19 AM PDT Been looking at a few under $1700. I'd like a 144hz, and at least a 1660ti. I want good build quality and a simple look. Some options I've discovered so far that seem to fit the bill: Gigabyte Aero 15 Classic Razer Blade Advanced (used) MAG-15 The MAG is seems to have the least amount of reviews on it. Heat and key of seems to be an issue. The Aero looks great, but has an off center keyboard. Not a huge fan. It's the lowest price though. The Razer is the priciest, but has a pretty good pedigree. I dont care about quality, i can put it on the lowest setting poasible. . under 999 dolar as much as possible Most sites compare the fps with high or medium settings but non test the specs with ultra low settings. So im not sure if i should go for a i5 or i7 and what cpu. My must have criteria is one having usb type c(preferably thundertbolt) and a usb a since my uni still rely a lot on thumb drives and a decent battery life. Just trying to get an opinion on the overall quality and past experience with them, but the specs of the blade has 8th gen i7, 16GB RAM, 256 storage and mx150, while the rest has 8th gen i5(except SL3 being 10th gen), 8GB RAM and 256GB storage .Open to other laptops as well , but would like to stick with these options first. No real budget limit but trying to keep it around $1500USD. The gram is the lightest, has a really long battery life, upgradability and has thunderbolt(I thought it was only a type c but lg says it is but couldn't really check). The only concerns are the reviews are saying that it feels cheap and having a bad customer support. Around $1330 USD. The blade stealth is currently going for only $1233 USD from the original price of $1816 USD despite having much greater horse power, the price is of a reputable vender but main concerns with it is the quality control. SL3 not available yet but soon. The design, screen, keyboard and the change from mini display port to usb c really attracts me. The port selection isn't that good otherwise nothing really pulling me back. Envy 13 the best balance for me and great value with the original price of $1030 USD and has a good selection of ports, but the features from other laptops are making me gravitate away from it. | Posted: 27 Oct 2019 02:32 AM PDT (not sure what to flair this) okay so i have an Asus ROG Strix GL753 with these specs CPU: Intel Core i7-7700HQ Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB GDDR5 RAM: 16 GB DDR4 Storage: 256GB M.2 SSD, 1TB HDD (5,400RPM) i believe this should be able to play games at maybe 60 fps but lately most of my games have dropped to around 0-20 fps. last year, i was able to play ni no kuni 2 at 60+ fps but now it is practically unplayable at 0-2 fps. nier automata is also unplayable at 0-5 fps. i think i used to be able to play overwatch at 50-70 fps but now it has dropped to 15-30 fps, and r6s runs at 0-9 fps max (i tweaked a bunch of settings and for a brief 5 seconds of joy, r6s ran at 70-90 fps, then it fell to 0-9 fps) i've already tried tinkering with game settings (and everything is set at the lowest it can be) but my laptop still runs these games extremely low,, would anyone know how i could fix this? Edit, adding temperatures: cpu 84°C, gpu 82°C when gaming (not sure if accurate, i launched three games for 5 minutes each) about 60-70°C normally [link] [comments]  | ||

Planning on replacing the thermal paste on the cpu and add thermal pads. after researching the question of the title, I came up with a general idea of where to put the pads. just want to confirm that the pads can go on the ssd, ram and areas around the cpu, specifically areas where the heatsink is. | Posted: 26 Oct 2019 10:09 PM PDT I'm looking at getting one of the XPS 15 models, but I'm unsure if I want the 2-in-1 or the traditional laptop. The 2-in-1 has the pen capability which is a big want for me. I currently use a Samsung Tab with S Pen and it's an amazing writing experience. I'd really like to just have one device though and Android is very limiting. The laptop has better hardware, including GPU and OLED display option. I don't have a gaming a PC, so it would be nice to play somewhat modern PC games. From reading online, the GTX 1650 looks significantly better than the Vega M GL. I'm a working engineer and taking grad classes half time. I do some CPU intensive simulation, but I have a work pc for work and cluster access for school. [link] [comments]  | ||
