Worth it to upgrade? If so, AIO router or Ubiquiti system?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 03:17 PM PDT

I have a 500Mbps connection that currently caps out at ~200Mbps, wired -- I believe this is due to my old-ish Asus RT-N66U running Tomato firmware and a VPN (I'd use the Arris router that came with the internet plan, but it lacks the features I want).

Do you think it's likely that the Asus router is a bottleneck and that upgrading will improve the connection.

If so, would it be better to get something like an Asus AC1750 (or greater), or would it be better to get a Ubiqiti EdgeMax + Unifi?

A mesh network isn't much of a concern since most of my important devices are hard-wired through either Cat5 or MoCA -> dumb gigabit switch -> device.

I should add that my main data hogs are mostly for the internal network: plex and gaming on my PC from my TV via Parsec/Steamlink/Gamestream. I'm not super concerned about maxing out the 500Mbps external network other than "getting what I pay for"--I originally wanted 200Mbps, but they had a special where 500Mbps was the same price.

Virtually every port on my public ip is open

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 04:18 AM PDT

I recently got myself Synology home server. There is an option to enable firewall. But before doing that I wanted to check if my WIFI router has firewall enabled already or not. From the router's web interface I couldn't tell reliably if the firewall was enabled or not. Few google searches led me to Nmap and how it can scan if ports are open or not. I visited a website that tells you which ports on your router are open. The list shows virtually every possible service port open on my public IP. The website not only showed my public IP but was also able to tell me the private IP of my router along with the private IP of the laptop from which I visited the website! It has really shocked me how vulnerable the network discovery was for a mundane website. Is this dangerous? How do I secure myself?

Slower Internet Over Ethernet than Wifi

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 10:24 AM PDT

Ok so I have this odd problem on my desktop pc.

I pay for 300Mbps internet pack and over wifi I always get 300-350Mbps on fast and speedtest sites on my cellphone. Now my desktop plugged in by ethernet only gets 120Mbps and it never fluctuates. My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-Z170x Gaming 7. All my network device settings in Windows say speeds up to 1Gbps and auto negotiate. I have tried multiple ethernet cords cat6 and cat5e that I have and it's always the same

I've googled around for this issue all over and nobody has a similar problem of ethernet reading less speeds than wifi. Most sources point to faulty cables but I even cut the ends off and redid my cat 6 cable and there was no difference.

Does anybody have an idea of what might be going on?

Medium-Size Home - Time for Wifi 6? AX12 vs Ubiquiti?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 10:25 AM PDT

I have a 4000 sq ft/2 story house and need pretty good Wi-Fi coverage outdoors as well for some iot devices and cars. Currently just have a Asus AC-87u (AC2400) and a AC-68u(AC1900) repeater (not wired). It works alright but the main router seems to be dying and new firmware/merlin hasn't fixed it so I think it's time for replacement. My connection speed is gigabit, I have a plex server, 8+ hd poe cameras, and do a lot of simultaneous 4k streaming, lots of iot, currently somehow over 50 various devices for all household users.

I though about Ubiquiti (Edgerouter 4-6p + 2 UAP-AC-HD) but I don't really want to run ethernet right now to support multiple APs, especially if I won't have to in the future. Would a single Netgear AX12 be suitable? What about the Orbi Wifi 6 Mesh?

BBC iPlayer from holiday home in France (main home in UK)

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 05:02 PM PDT

I'm spending more and more time in France as I wind down from work, but I'm still a UK resident and pay the licence fee.

When in France I would like to be able to watch BBC / ITV / Ch4 on a

    a) windows 7 PC

    b) Linux Mint PC

    c) Humax HDR-1100S freesat box.

My French ADSL is 10mbit download / 2mb upload and I have fibre (80mbit down / 20mb up) in the UK, so I'm not too worried about my UK upload throttling my French download.

I don't have, but can easily get, a fixed IP address from my UK ISP.

    *

Q1) Presumably I can install a VPN server on my UK router (I may need to upgrade), VPN clients on each of the PCs, connect to the UK from France and browse away?

Q2) Is it easier, but still adequately secure, to use a simpler tech such as SSH instead of VPN?

Q3) How to connect the Freesat box ... the only configuration is to specify the "gateway", which I assume needs to be the UK router rather than the French one. I can't get my head around that :)

Is VLAN isolation for common servers, such as DNS, DHCP, gateway, multimedia server, etc worth?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 04:39 PM PDT

Hi all, recently I have isolated my surveillance cameras from the rest of my network (home is something like 10.0.0.X/24 and surveillance games are on a 10.0.VLAN.X/24 range). In the firewall, I have added rules that allow data exchange within the VLAN and another rule allowing the surveillance VLAN to communicate with my Synology Surveillance Station server. I reallyliked the result as the cameras are not communicating with Internet servers anymore... and they do try all the time. It was my first VLAN and I learned a lot in the process. Now I am planning to add more VLANs to split traffic, but I was wondering what are the best practices for a VLAN that has servers that all wired/wireless network devices can access, such as "multimedia servers" and pfSense appliance (firewall, gateway, router, DHCP, DNS, etc). If I have to add firewalls rules such that all other VLANs can still access these servers, is it really worth to move servers to a separate VLAN?

Virgin Media Router + Google Wi-Fi, how do I set up another access point? (Netgear D6400)

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 02:26 PM PDT

I'm not really into home networking nor I understand much about router, modem, etc.

What I'm trying to do is to set up a Netgear D6400 in the hallway that connects to the main modem-router in the living room (Virgin Media Router with Google Wi-Fi Modem) wirelessly, is that possible?

My understanding is that I need to set up the D6400 to AP MODE but I'm struggling with all the IP, DHCP settings...

    Could anyone please help me?

Help with configuring a local area net.

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 04:21 PM PDT

Hi! I am trying to set up a LAN on my university dorm and i can't seem to figure it out. My dorm has two Ethernet ports wall mounted. These correspond to static IP addresses that our administrator provided. Let's say that port A has x.x.x.25 and port B x.x.x.13. I want to be able to have wifi and ethernet on my dorm from either those ports and plug many computers and or smartphones.

I have tried using two different old routers. The zte h27n and zte108l. They are both dsl routers but the first has a wan ethernet port which you can also use as a standard lan port. Firstly, tried creating a static wan connection with the settings from our network administrator including default gateway, subnet mask and dns. Then i bound this, to the wan port. Second, i disabled dchp on that wan port and enabled on the other 3. But no luck. Then i tried the same with zte 108l also with no luck. I feel i am missing something.

All i want is to route all my traffic from my local devices to either .25 or .13 ip addresses. Is my only option to get an actual switch?

Will a Ruckus Unleashed R500 mesh with a wired ZF7982?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 08:05 PM PDT

Hello, I'm hoping someone could point me in the right direction here. I have a ZF7982 that is wired to a Edgerouter X. I'm hoping to add another AP upstairs to the current setup. I was looking at an R500 from ebay. If I pick up an R500 from ebay and load the unleashed firmware on it, will it be able to mesh with my wired ZF7982 downstairs? I'm looking at this article here https://support.ruckuswireless.com/articles/000001673 .

At my home, I currently have a single ZF7982 AP providing wifi for the whole home. I recently found that the range doesn't quite reach the upstairs corner bedroom. Speed drops significantly in the corners of the home. The ZF7982 currently sits in the middle of the first floor near the ISP router. I can't wall or ceiling mount it unfortunately. If I can add a single R500, wireless-ly, upstairs it would be a really cheap way of extending coverage. Is this possible? Or would I need to look at replacing the ZF7982 downstairs with an unleashed AP as well in order for this to work?

Any ways to extend antenna cable for a network card.

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 07:01 PM PDT

So I'm wanting to buy a ASUS Ac-88 network card:

    https://www.amazon.com.au/ASUS-Dual-Band-802-11ac-2100Mbps-1000Mbps/dp/B06XPGT4Q5/ref=asc_df_B06XPGT4Q5/?tag=googleshopdsk-22&linkCode=df0&hvadid=341791782377&hvpos=1o2&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3250510192199671697&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9071810&hvtargid=pla-672482213696&psc=1

But the antenna cable looks pretty short and I want to put it somewhere in my house with a good connection. Is there anyway I could buy a very long cable which connects to the antennas so I have more flexibility in where I put it?

    Replacement for dying R7000

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 06:33 PM PDT

Looking to replace a R7000 that is dropping connections and crashing daily. I have some experience tinkering with home network DDWRT, multiple AP's, but am a novice. Willing to learn, though. Would like suggestions for a reliable replacement. I've read some reading on Ubiquity and Mikrotik and am very keen on going to a no-nonsense setup like that, but not sure what is right for us.

2-story 3600 sqft house, 50 mbps cable internet w/SB6141 modem, 3 streaming tvs, PS4 gaming, 4 phones, 4 laptops, and 12ish other misc devices. Cable and modem is in closet centrally located on 2nd floor centrally located.Have CAT5 to middle of house downstairs as well. All of the clients are on wifi.

Would like to keep price under $200, but could go higher if necessary.

Internet speed way slower than what I pay for

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 06:14 PM PDT

I dont exactly live in the middle of nowhere, about a mile from a decent sized town, and my isp is what most people around here use. However, when im paying for a 50 mbps plan and end up only getting 3 mbps there must be an issue. Both my modem and router are good models, I use a LAN connection, and there is very little internet traffic in my house. Somebody let me know if it is possible to reach the proper (or close to) internet speed. Thank you.

My room is the only one in the house with 1 bar of WiFi - how to improve?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 06:13 PM PDT

I'm upstairs while the router is downstairs. Every room gets full bars whereas mine gets 1. So obviously I'm looking for ways to increase the signal to my room. What's the best way to do this, preferably for ~ £50?

A single puck of mesh WiFi? Repeaters, powerline adaptors, extenders etc?

A few networking questions regarding QoS and Guest networks

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 01:25 PM PDT

Hello, noob here. I have a Edgerouter X connected to a TP Link Deco M4 and two deco towers throughout the house. I would like to set up a) QoS and b) a guest network. 60Mbps.

    A) I have 1 deco connected to the router at eth1, 1 ps4 to eth2 and my pc to eth3. I also have a smart tv connected via Ethernet cable in my living room from a Deco, they are access point mode. I would like my PC to have dibs over the ps4 over the smart tv how do i go about setting up QoS. Is it possible to set up QoS for the smart tv even though its connected to the deco and not the router? I watched a few videos but it seems they just put the max bandwith to eth0 and call it good. How do I divvy up the bandwidth how much does my pc need vs others? Or do i just max it out.

    B) The deco has a button to turn on guest wifi. Should I just use that or set it up in the router? If I use the deco does it have any sort of way to configure rules and open ports like the router would?

Hope A isn't confusing. Thanks for the help.

Router technology (802.11ac, now 802.11ax) promise using more channels using OFDMA to get higher speeds. If the laws of physics didn't change from 2013 till now, why couldn't the same frequency domain multiplexing happen in 2013? Why ship a product if radios can multiplex to a higher granularity?

How to test newly installed wired network

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 06:27 AM PDT

Hi all – So when I have my wired Cat 6 home network installed what's the best way to efficiently test all the drops? Do you use a special tool for this? Would you just lug a laptop around and see if you get internet at each jack, or would you test the lines in a more technical manner?

There would be at least five locations, with more than ten jacks. e.g. the home theater location would have a four jack plate. (I don't know if such locations count as one "drop" or four.)

    Thanks.

    ASUS AiMesh?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 01:13 PM PDT

I'm looking for the best wireless system to cover my house and give me the best speeds I can with gigabit speed. I know I can't get gigabit speed over WiFi just trying for the max speed I can. I have a very large house and my modem and router are on one side of the house downstairs and my pc is upstairs on the opposite side of the house.

My current router is an ASUS rt ac5300. My pc is using a ASUS PCE ac88. It gets good speeds just a little to far to get full connection. Also have now 3 iPhone 11 pros in the house.

So I'm thinking of upgrading to the new ASUS AX11000 and using that as my new router and then move the current router up to my pc room and make it a mesh system. Would that be good or should I buy 2 AX11000 and then sell the other pieces?? I know that might be overkill but I want to max my speed. It took me almost 2 hours to download the new COD which was 129gb which I think is kinda long

Or would it be better just to get the new Orbi AX6000 that was just released?

    TP-Link AC2600 vs... AC2600

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 04:13 PM PDT

Ahoy. I need a good router to hold us over for a year or two while Wi-Fi 6 matures. Problem: I've zeroed in on a TP-Link model, but it's actually two models that are hard for me to differentiate. They're both AC2600.

    TP-Link AC2600 (Archer A10): OEM Link Amazon

    TP-Link AC2600 (Archer C2600) OEM Link Amazon

The A10 is $110 and the C2600 is $170 (both at Amazon – they're more at Best Buy).

The A10 has three visible antennas, while the C2600 has four. They're both rated for the same speeds, both listed as dual-band. The A10 is listed as 4x4, and I assume the C2600 is the same.

I think the C2600 has an Intel chipset for whatever that's worth.

They're both new, released in the past year, though according to Amazon the A10 is newer.

Tom's Guide named the TP-Link C2300 as the best overall router (note that it's the 2300). That got me to this conundrum because when you go to the Amazon page for that router, it tells you there's "a newer model of this item", the A10... Since the A10 is a notch faster and yet somehow cheaper than the C2300, my focus shifted to the A10. I stumbled on the C2600 as well and got confused.

What can you ascertain about the differences between these two models? Is one better than the other?

    Thanks.

    ASUS RT-AC88U & RT-AC5300 Dropping wifi every 5 minutes.

We have 2 routers at home, a RT-AC88U & RT-AC5300. They are linked with AiMesh. The AC88U being te AiMesh router and the AC5300 being the node. The wifi on my iDevice keeps dropping every 5 minutes. I went to the system log and the mac adress of my iDevice was appearing very frequently. It started a few months back and it's very annoying when watching video's or facetiming.

    Will This Setup Be Better

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 02:29 PM PDT

Currently running 2 Asus RT86u in AiMesh mode. Been reading a lot about this not being the best because their both using the same channel. Was thinking of buying some access points but thought why not use my old router as part of my network. So what I would like to do and please stop me if this is no better before I go through all the troubles just to put it back. I would like to take my Linksys EA9500 router and then hardwire the 2 Asus router and use them as Access points. They have that option in their setup. Now my question is will this be better then how I'm using them now or will they still be using the same channel as my main router.
