Does having a router at 5Ghz fix bluetooth? Posted: 03 Oct 2019 09:56 AM PDT Hello, I recently bought headphones with Bluetooth and I cannot use wifi and Bluetooth at the same time. I, of course, didn't know that and now I don't see the point of having Bluetooth headphones if I can't use them. I read on the internet that if I have a 5Ghz router it can solve that kind of issue? My WiFi drops to 0.10 Mbps from 26Mbps when Bluetooth is on. EDIT: Im running Android Pie on Redmi 7 EDIT2: Just found out my phone doesn't support 5Ghz, rip. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2019 06:04 PM PDT I know a little bit about computers/networking and I'm kinda stumped here. So recently my internet just drops randomly when browsing the internet( i.e. Facebook, Amazon, Google and other sites) on my main computer. I ran several tests and confirmed it's only dropping on this computer, I ran a constant ping on this computer, another one I have, used a phone, and streamed on my tv just to see if the other ones would drop as well. I've updated NIC drivers, deleted/re-installed it, even set this computer to a static IP instead of DHCP, IP renew, verified firewall/AV wasn't blocking any traffic and I've done several flushdns ( which seems to fix it about 30% of the time). I can game perfectly fine on the computer without being disconnected and it appears that after I close my web browser, my internet is usually restored in a couple of mins until I try browsing again. BUT, I recently installed a VPN and noticed that the issue doesn't occur when connected to it. [link] [comments] |
Orbi directly into fiber jack or do I need to keep google fiber network box? Posted: 03 Oct 2019 03:52 PM PDT just got the orbi system with 2 satellites and one router...do I have to keep the google fiber network box or can I plug the orbi directly into the fiber jack? I attempted directly into the fiber jack earlier but had no success. any help is appreciated. Edit: Best substitute for google fiber network box? [link] [comments] |
Updated iOS App for Netgear Orbi forces you to share you iOS device’s location? Posted: 03 Oct 2019 01:05 PM PDT After an app update today, upon opening the Orbi mobile app presumably users who have not already given the app access to your device's location it seems cannot use the app... The message indicates "if you don't allow location you may have a diminished experience". The thing is though it seems unless you give the app access to your iOS devices location, there does not seem to be any other way to dismiss or bypass this screen. Does anyone know if there's a way around this other than allowing Netgear to have access to my iOS device's location? I don't care about the feature they say I'll lose if I don't give my location. Has a surge protector ever saved any of your networking equipment? Posted: 03 Oct 2019 03:58 PM PDT Hi all — Has a surge protector ever saved one of your network devices? That you know for a fact? I'm trying to get a sense of how often this stuff happens, these mysterious "surges". They can't deal with lightning right? How did you know that a surge protector saved the day? Did it burn out or something? I'm also curious to know if anyone has tried a whole house surge protector to protect their gear, the heavy duty stuff from Siemens, Square D, etc. Thanks. Wifi PC to PC transfer speed help Posted: 03 Oct 2019 01:22 AM PDT So I have asus rt-ac58u router with 2x2 5ghz wifi with teorethical max speed of 867Mbps. It is connected by lan port to my IP provided router and Im connected to its 5GHz network with my PC and Laptop for internet. Laptop is HP Omen with Realtek wifi. Probably 1x1 with theoretical speed of 866Mbps. And the PC has msi b450i Gaming Plus Ac with 1x1 wifi with theoretical speed of 433Mbps. The computers are in the same room with the router. Clear line of sight. 3m from it. When transfering files from PC to Laptop im getting around 17MB/s. Is this all I can get from this setup? How much of theoretical speed is possible in real use? What I am getting is less than half of the slowest client... [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2019 04:38 PM PDT So that's a noob question but I haven't found anything online while googling. If I put a PoE injector into the uplink of my not PoE network switch, will it provide PoE on all the ports? Probably not but I just wanted to be sure [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2019 07:26 PM PDT There are two phone lines at my house, one has Xfinity and the other has ATT. I'm currently in the process of canceling my ATT subscription and switching to xfinity as well. So today I recieved my xfinity modem and I tried installing it on my active ATT phone line by transferring the ethernet, data, and telephone wires from the ATT 2wire router over to the xfinity one just to test things out. After reconnecting the wires and cables back to the ATT 2wire router everything looked good all the lights were green and blinking, but now I get a "can't connect to gateway" error message when I try to visit a site. I'm still able to access the router via 192.168.1.254 and under "connection to ATT" it says "down". I tried contacting ATT but the waiting queue is taking a long time, hopefully someone on here knows a solution while I wait on ATT customer service. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2019 07:04 PM PDT Hi all, fairly competent networking professional having frustrations setting up simple hardware here. Decided to switch from Verizon to Comcast for better service and price (going to sidestep the whole who's better subject). Anyways, my current equipment won't work with Comcast so I bought a new modem (extraneous to the issue) and a TP-Link Archer A7. So I started to set the router up at home in advance to configure some settings before my Comcast install. Set up= power on and attempt to use the local web server management console. First red flag, "https is disabled, please use http to set up your router". I reluctantly switch to http and the first prompt is to set the password. I set a bogus temp password since I get the heeby jeebies configuring over http (yeah, I know it's local only and WPA2 but still). After this, I have been unable to have any more settings pages load. I've tried multiple endpoints (wired and wireless), cleared my cache, and factory reset the device. In general the web server is sluggish to load as well. Do I have a defective unit OR has everything turned cloud and I don't own my router enough to do local offline config? OR is this inexplicable / I'm a fraud who can't set up a home router? ASUS ROG Rapture GT-ax11000 - VLAN Tagging 201 for CenturyLink Posted: 03 Oct 2019 06:49 PM PDT Hi All, Title essentially says it all, I was wondering if anyone knew if it was possible to do VLAN tagging on the ROG Rapture GT-ax11000. I know it's possible on other ASUS routers, but looking into the manual didn't seem to show me anything proving that this one could do it or not. (I have centurylink fiber and need PPPoE and VLAN 201) [link] [comments] |
getting a slow connection using LAN adapter [UPDATE] Posted: 03 Oct 2019 05:20 PM PDT I posted this last night. im determining what the problem might be. i hope you guys can help me. using LAN adapter decreases my internet speed. i'll show the test that ive done. our internet plan at home is 25mbps. At Home: https://imgur.com/a/3YGhlIm
this test was done last night, clearly it looks like the LAN adapter was the problem at the moment. but then this morning i tested my LAN adapter again here at work. i dont know what the internet plan here is. At Work: https://imgur.com/a/AQUnNzw
so now im confused. it seems that the LAN adapter is working just fine. speed is almost the same with or without using the LAN adapter. now i think im having a problem with my PC or my router? but i dont know how to troubleshoot this. the original purpose of me buying the LAN adapter is to have a wired connection on my Nintendo Switch at home. here are the result of speed test on my switch at home. At Home using Nintendo Switch
so at home, using a LAN adapter slows down my internet speed on my PC or my Switch. so im thinking that the problem lies on my router/internet. im using TPLINK WR840N router. how can i fix this issue? is there something on my router settings that i should change? i even tried turning OFF the bandwidth control of my router, still same results. sorry for the wall of text. TL;DR, using LAN adapter at home(on my PC and Nintendo Switch) greatly reduces my internet speed (25mbps to 2mbps). but using it at my workplace shows no reduction of internet speed. what do i need to do to make my connection to my LAN adapter not greatly reduce my internet speed at home? drivers are updated. Posted: 03 Oct 2019 04:10 PM PDT I'm gonna give a brief tl;dr on the situation. My ps4 was keeping a solid connection and would keep dropping. My pc was also running certain site slow; crunchyroll, reddit, imgur, etc. We have fiber optics so that shouldnt be happening and after calling our provider they sent out a technician. They reset the lines here and while that helped a little it didnt fix it completely and we've come to the conclusion that we need a new router. Been looking at some and was wondering if anyone here had recommendations? The main one we were looking at is Linksys AC 1750 Dual Band WiFi 5 router. We have about 3 people in the house each with a phone. There is also two iPads and my ps4. They dont use the wifi as much as me but I do a lot on it. [link] [comments] |
Do I need to worry about switch throughput? Posted: 03 Oct 2019 03:23 AM PDT Hi, I'm getting ready to run cat6A throughout my house, with seven unmanaged switches (I'm currently looking at six NETGEAR GS308s and one GS316), but I haven't been able to find much in the way of info on the risk of switches bottlenecking network throughput? Is this something I need to worry about? If under ideal conditions my cat6A cables can support 10Gbps, will total throughput be limited by these switches? Low latency is also something I care about, but I don't think this is as much of a risk. I'd appreciate any advice or info. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Laptop getting update notifications while WiFi adapter is disabled. Posted: 03 Oct 2019 03:30 PM PDT Sorry if this is a rookie questions, but I'm scratching my head on this one. I have a laptop in my man cave that I use now and again to "test software," edit pics/videos, etc. Most of the time I keep the WiFi adapter disabled on the laptop. I will turn it on every so often to update the security programs and do quick browsing, but that's it. About 2.5 weeks ago, I installed Logitech Unifying Software and Logitech Options so I could grab any mouse/keyboard laying around and have at it. Since then, the adapter has been disabled and I've only been on it once or twice. I just logged on a minute ago and almost immediately I get a pop-up notification that there is a software update for one of my Logitech devices. --> If the laptop has had no access to the internet in 2.5 weeks, then how does it "know" there is an update for one of my devices? QoS (fq_codel/cake) Hardware Recommendation Posted: 03 Oct 2019 11:36 AM PDT Hello, I'm trying to find some hardware that will handle 200Mb down/ 15 Mb up QoS. I currently have an EdgeRouter Lite-3, EdgeSwitch 24, and an Asus 68u in AP mode. I screwed up my ER-3 by playing with the SQM settings (had to rebuild the flash drive). But it seems like it couldn't handle all the bandwidth. I'm trying to fine tune my network (bufferbloat, smart queue) for approx 10 devices. I was looking into pfsense with maybe a dell r210ii, or a MikroTek. Maybe an EdgeRouter 4? I dig the whole homelab scene, but don't want a super power hog. OpenWRT? Any hardware recommendations? Or am I going overkill. Everything is hardwired cat 6. Cable modem CM3200. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2019 03:18 PM PDT Hi I recently got verizion fios gigabit and would like to ovoid rental fees by buying a router. So here's the current setup: I have the isp provided router in a small cabinet where all the cables run to, a cable in the wall goes to a tp-link archer a7 which is used as an access point as it it can be centrally located, all the wired devices are connected to the first router. I would like to try out pfsense and need a small cheap (under $100) with at least 4 ports (1 wan, 3 lan). If this is not possible, I will probably buy a ubiqiti edgerouter x. We also only have around 6 devices on the network. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Here is how I use IoT devices at home. Is this fine, or do I need to do anything more? Posted: 03 Oct 2019 11:18 AM PDT This is how I have set everything up specifically for IoT devices. Note: Some may say that Alexa and Google devices are anyway gathering a lot of data, but that is why I have limited them as much as possible.

Redirected to Quad9 DNS - a couple questions Posted: 03 Oct 2019 02:48 PM PDT Ahoy netizens, As in the subject, I pointed my DNS to Quad9 (Win10, under adapter settings), flushed the DNS cache for my local machine. I know it takes a while for DNS to update around the world - but it's been 15 minutes and my old DNS is still showing. Am I missing something? [link] [comments] |
Gaming lag issues. Need full network solution Posted: 03 Oct 2019 02:06 PM PDT So my household are fairly big users of the internet and me and my brother are often gaming at the same time and often experience lag when playing on a regular basis. We get between 42-50mbps down and 10-11mbps up The max evening use case would be: 1PC gaming and on discord 1 Pc on discord 1 PS4 gaming Ipad streaming football HD Ipad browsing web I feel with my speed we have more than enough bandwidth and this is also a worst case scenario at any given time. I have tried the NetDuma R1 and it was faulty (I'm not convinced but the support reckoned so, it is in the process of RMA). I loved the ease of DumaOS and would recommend it to anyone. I'm looking for a good solution for my home network. Currently I have a HG612 modem > TP link c60 (used to take PPoE connection to NetDuma, QOS disabled as is wifi) > NetDuma We have powerline extenders coming from the Netduma also. On the modem my SNR margin was 21 DB my line actuation was 11.2 DB. On DSL report I scored 100/100 for a line quality test. If anyone has any ideas as to a good solution it would be much appreciated as I'm lost now. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Our WiFi is extremely inconsistent. We need to refresh pages to get them to load. What's the issue? Posted: 03 Oct 2019 02:05 PM PDT Hi, we have AT&T Internet 50, and we have replaced our router/modem like 5 times now because our WiFi just isn't working correctly and we don't know what to do. Pages don't load at all half the time. Many times, pressing refresh will get them to load immediately... No solution is helping. We've talked with AT&T like a dozen times now, nothing is working... We're thinking of switching, but it would be more expensive to do so. It's not a problem with speeds or our plan, it's not a problem with the amount of devices connected since this happens when only one person is home and is only using their phone, devices on Ethernet work great so it can't be an infrastructure issue... We've tried multiple different router/modem models. 5268AC, NVG589,BGW210... Nothing is working. We currently have the 5268AC. Also, these issues happen no matter how close we are to the router. They are also totally random. Sometimes things work great, sometimes things won't load, one of the times we replaced our router fixed the issue for like 2 or 3 days but then it came back... So yeah, if anyone here could help, that would be amazing. I just got a OnePlus 7 Pro and it's supposed to be super speedy, but when pages don't load half the time, it feels like I wasted my money on a fast phone. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Best QoS Router at Reasonable Cost Posted: 03 Oct 2019 01:39 PM PDT Hello! I need a router for my grandma that is rock solid and can do amazing QoS for her VoIP and possibly (depending on how VoIP goes) IPTV via DirecTV Now. I gave her an Almond+ a few years back but it still manages to lack all QoS abilities. She has 3Mbps down and 1Mbps up so there isn't much bandwidth to spare when the whole family stops by for a weekend and I need to make sure her phone gets top priority and just "works" when she needs it. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Advice on how to connect devices on separate subnets? (Odd situation, please read description) Posted: 03 Oct 2019 09:45 AM PDT Background: This problem is taking place due to a network controlled by a university. I am living in a school owned house with several engineers, all of whom have their own routers and various devices that benefit from having control over your network (e.g. Media servers, networked google home speakers, various IoT Projects). The school limits each person to a 30mbps downlink, so everyone sharing one router is not a valid option, but the goal here is to connect all of the separate routers (still connected separately to the schools network to maintain usable speeds) in such a way that devices can be ssh'd into when connected to any of our personal routers. Ideally it would also be possible to cast to devices connected to other routers, and or be able to make speaker groups that span the subnets. I'm not sure where to begin solving this, but we have plenty of hardware to make physical connections between them. Any advice is appreciated, thanks. [link] [comments] |

Router Advertised as 867 mbps wifi speed but Wan provides only 100 mbps?? Posted: 03 Oct 2019 12:40 PM PDT I got Archer C50 V 3.0 AC1200 and the specification of this router was like the title. It only pushes up to 20 mbps even though my internet plan is 300 mbps. I did some research and I kinda learned that this is advertising bullshit from most of router selling companies. The claim speed is only theoretical and the actual speed won't even go up to the half of it. Right? I'm kinda mad at TP-link because they pull this scam shit to a innocent customer. Am I right? Btw, what router do you guys recommend for 300 mbps internet speed?? [link] [comments] |
