Coax compression connector just slides right off

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 07:54 PM PDT

I'm trying to put on a compression connector onto a coax cable coming up through my floor. I tried putting it on with a tool I got at my local home improvement store ( product link ) but the connector just slid right off. I tried another. Same thing. I tried with some brand new cable I bought in a 250' roll. It worked!!! So I tried adding one on the end of that new cable. Failed. Out of the 10 connectors in the package, only 2 or 3 of them worked, the rest just slid off.

I've also tried crimp connections and twist connections and nothing seems to work. It seems like the black plastic insulation is too thick or something for those.

    What am I doing wrong!

Just got Xfinity Gigabit service and wondering how to improve my service for a downstairs computer?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 07:23 PM PDT

    1. It's a coax connection to the modem
    2. Modem is upstairs, one computer is downstairs
    3. I was previously using netgear powerline, tops out at 100mbps which seems typical(good for pl)
    4. Getting 200mbps+ over wifi

Would some sort of coax to ethernet work for the downstairs computer in terms of getting a better connection?

Internet on computer cuts out for a few seconds every few minutes but no problems on phone

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 04:52 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

    I cross-posted this on r/techsupport as well

I started having this issue about a week ago. My internet will freeze on my computer for 5-30 seconds every few minutes. I started trying to load a page on my phone when it happens and it loads fine (connected to the same Wi-Fi)

I have a gigabit fiber connection so I assume this shouldn't be happening. I purchased the my desktop about six months ago (ibuypower GMA3800BST)

    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/cyberpowerpc-gaming-desktop-amd-ryzen-7-2700-16gb-memory-amd-radeon-rx-580-8gb-2tb-hdd-240gb-ssd-white/6329758.p?skuId=6329758&intl=nosplash

My router is a Netgear R6350.

I've tried the usual fixes like restarting router but it hasn't helped. I also contacted the service provider and their only suggestion was to hardwire in.

I have a 50-ft ethernet cable coming in the mail. Given that it seems to work fine on my phone but cut out on my computer, could it be an issue with my wireless card? Or maybe something to do with firewall?

    Appreciate any help!

Looking for Reliability in a router.

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 07:07 AM PDT

My modem from my ISP has wifi but when its under load it kills my entire internet.

I went and bought a cheap d-link router and under even less load the d-link quit in the first 10 minutes and wouldn't even automatically reconnect. (During this time my modem's Ethernet to my computer was still up.)

So if I use my modem wifi my entire internet dies. If I use a shitty router I have bad wifi anyways. I need a budget RELIABLE router.

I've read the t-link c7 archer is a good little box? Seems to be in my price range.

As for load it basically just needs to handle netflix on two devices at the same time. Nothing more.

    I'll never try d-link again.

EDIT: My modem in bridge mode is rock solid for 2 days now. Its just the wifi chip in it that overheats and shits the bed.

    Port forward two Xbox devices?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 08:29 PM PDT

Trying to play Battlefield with my spouse but we are having connectivity issues.

Her Xbox has port forwarding so she is playing as I type. However we just bought a second Xbox one last night and xfinitys app won't let me port forward the new one as the ports can only accept traffic from one console at a time. Is there a solution to this? Is there a secondary set of ports I can use to help? Google didn't give me any good advice sadly so I turn to you!

Xfi advantage modem with ac68u as a repeater

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 08:24 PM PDT

I've got xfinity xfi advantage (only for the unlimited data) and was trying to use my old router as a repeater. Had anyone tried this? With comcast being so scummy I would think that they may have blocked this functionality so you would have to buy their silly pods but I'm hoping that it may be possible. I keep setting my asus router up as a repeater and it connects but I dont seem to be able to connect to the internet through it.

Need to setup a bridged 2nd router for VR

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 08:19 PM PDT

    Hi

I am going to use an Oculus Quest with Virtual Desktop to play PC VR games. This requires a 5ghz router to work without issues. My current router is a Google Wifi and it's not good for it due to it being a mesh router. I am thinking of getting an ethernet card and buying a 5ghz router just for my PC and Quest.

    Basically: Google Wifi <-> PC <-> Router2 <-> Quest

I want the PC and Quest to see each other and have internet access. Is this possible? I am not sure if the Virtual Desktop software can force IP addresses to use. It probably needs to be auto detected

I am trying to avoid connecting another router to the Google Wifi directly since I want my PC to be seen by other devices. Kind of like make the 2nd router as a switch but still an access point while win10 does the routing. Is rhis possible?

Xfinity Xifi Gateway better then my current router and stopping Comcast Snooping

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 07:08 PM PDT

I'm having a issue with my Home Networking. I just upgraded to 1 gig with Xfinity for some reason my current Router cant seem to spit out speeds equal to the comcast modem/router I was given.

On Wifi my Desktop gets 430 on the Comcast device and 120-200 on my Linksys

Plugged it its full 1 gig versus the 600.

Is my EA9400 Linksys just not as good? It says it can push over a gig of data over wifi and its AC 5000.

If it cant keep up is there anyway I can spot Comcast from watching my Devices through their end. I don't like how they can see the names of my devices on the website.

Looking for a router I can grow into

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 05:59 PM PDT

I'm working on building a home network for my apartment that will be hopefully be future proof and pretty beefy so that we can grow into it when we move into another house.

Our current apartment is 1600 sq ft. and we have DSL so I'm waiting to get a better modem until we get cable internet. We do have very spotty WiFi because of the layout of the house and where the modem needs to be. We are currently using the ISP provided Arris NVG589

I've been looking at the following models as they are the most commonly recommended:

    • TP-Link Archer C7
    • TP-Link Archer A20
    • Netgear Nighthawk R7000P AC2300
    • Netgear Nighthawk X4S
    • ASUS AC1900 RT AC68U
    • ASUS AC1300
    • Samsung 860 EVO
    • Synology RT2600ac

When it comes to what I need, the only thing I've figured out is that I need a router that has 802.11ac and MU-MIMO support, although I don't have much of an idea of what that means. What other parameters should I be looking for.

I would like to eventually get everything wired through a switch, but our portable devices, game systems, and guests will still need WiFi.

5Ghz network slower than 2.4Ghz network

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 05:33 PM PDT

We just moved into a new apartment and our internet provider came today to get us set up. We got an (up to) 1500 mbps download package and they set us up with two networks. Initially, I got about 30-50mbps on the 2.4Ghz network which I would expect, but when I logged into the 5Ghz network it would go to "secured" then say it couldn't connect to the network. I went into the network settings and changed the 5Ghz network to AC only and it would let me connect but my download speeds are super slow. I ran a speedtest and bizarrely I got 13mbps download and 230mbps upload. I don't think the range is an issue as my roommates in the basement get 100 & 200 download whilst I'm in the room next to the living room, which is where the router is located.

Router/modem allows only 16 wireless connections

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 05:31 PM PDT

I'm having difficulty with my router / modem. After speaking with my ISPs tech support, I'm wondering if their evaluation of my situation is accurate.

I want to connect to my router approximately 20 wireless devices, almost all of which are low-bandwidth (smart lighting, Google Home devices, etc). My router is limiting me to only 16 WiFi connections - the only way to connect another device is to end the connection on a different device to make room. When I try to connect a device, it doesn't give an error, it just doesn't accept the connection attempt at all. I initially thought it was my DHCP server settings, but all my router settings are correct. There isn't a setting on the router to limit the amount of connections, aside from through DHCP. I bought a new router thinking it was a router fault, however the issue still persists.

I have a 3 Mbps DSL connection (it's as fast as I can get in my area, allows for two Netflix SD connections - good enough). The router is an ActionTec. Tech support said that because of my slow internet speed, the modem can't handle the load and disallows anymore connections. I wonder though, shouldn't my router accept the connection to the router/WiFi network and simply spread my bandwidth thin?

I asked if maybe the ISP limits the amount of connections through the router firmware and they said no.

I'm at a loss, as were tech support.

My wife just finished screaming at me that her phone won't connect.. any help would be very much appreciated!

    Port-forwarding question

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 05:27 PM PDT

I've seen all the posts about the 25565(?) port pros and cons for Minecraft servers, but I had a question about the new 1.3 Terraria update, wherein a portforwarded router can allow mobile-based hosting through the port 7777 and an external ip. Is it safer or more unsafe compared to Minecraft portforwarding? I wouldn't be concerned normally, but I'm on a shared family network so a DDoS could actually be super annoying, and my parents won't let me portforward at the moment. They're usually fine with me doing stuff if I just do my research, so ny extra info is much appreciated! :)

Pros/Cons of Upgrading Internet (Lightspeed Internet; British Columbia, Canada)

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 05:24 PM PDT

My ISP has launched a promotion to upgrade my internet connection from 75/2 Mbps down/up (using a Huawei MT130U with a Broadcom chipset) to 300/20 for $10 a more per month -- which seems like a great deal. However, the website only lists the following supported modems:

    • Hitron Technologies CGNM-3550 (wifi, with router)
    • Hitron Technologies CDA3-20 (wired, and free from the ISP)
    • Technicolor DPC3848V (wifi, with router)
    • Technicolor TC4350 (wired, $93 from ISP)
    • SmartRG SR808AC (wifi, with router)

Looking into these modems, I have noticed all of the Hitron and Technicolor units have the dreaded Puma6 chipset (which apparently causes a lot of latency issues during online gaming), and the SmartRG modem is both a) incredibly rare and b) a combo modem/router (we only need a modem).

Are people still having issues with the Puma6 chipset on the CDA3-20 or TC4350? Would you bother upgrading the package? Given what I've read, I'm starting to think that maybe I should hold out until better modems hit the market...

Need help with old router as AP

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 05:04 PM PDT

I've got two routers. One in the basement, R7000P as my main and another, Archer C7 in my office upstairs acting as my AP. I set it up to cover some dead spots on the top and main floors. It's set up properly as far as i know - same subnet, same ssid, security settings, channels, MTU, etc. Connecting to the AP via ethernet, i'm getting <10Mbps. On wifi while in the same room, 2Mbps. Am I missing something? Granted, the 2nd AP is connected to the main router via powerline ethernet - but when connecting the main router to my PC on the same powerline connection, i'm getting 40+Mbps. Am I missing something? Any advice appreciated!

Edit: The upload is full speed. Just download is severely slow on ethernet/wireless.

Need Help with Connecting 2 Routers Wirelessly

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 04:58 PM PDT

    Hello r/HomeNetworking,

I have a PC downstairs that does not have a wifi card, but I would like to connect it to the internet. I can't really buy a long enough ethernet cable to connect my main router upstairs (let's call it Router 1) to my PC, so I decided to fish out one of my old routers to connect it to (let's call it Router 2) Unfortunately, it did not have access to the internet, so connecting it to my PC didn't do anything.

So now I'd like to connect my Router 2 to Router 1, but again, I don't really have a long enough ethernet cable to connect both of them as they're on different floors. Is there a way to connect them wirelessly?

I should probably also mention that my Router 1 is a NetGear Nighthawk AC1900, while my Router 2 is a Linksys WRT300N Wireless-N.

    Thanks in advance

    Wifi options for new house

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 04:35 PM PDT

Hi. Im moving into a larger house from a small house where I currently have a Linksys 1900ACS that works well. I don't think the router's wifi will cover my entire house (cable modem access point is in the basement), so I was thinking of setting up something to extend the network. I don't want to have multiple networks, and want to use something with "seamless roaming" so it just will pick the best signal depending on what floor of the house I am in. I was thinking of getting a Linksys Velop and using it in bridge mode with the 1900ACS as the main router, but I think I could also get some Linksys RE7000 Max-Stream™ AC1900+ WiFi Extenders and use them with the 1900ACS. Is one of these options better? Even though the router is an older model the linksys website says "seamless roaming" should work with any router -- any one have experience with these?

    thanks!

How to set up 2.4ghz AND 5ghz?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 04:05 PM PDT

i have an xfinity router that supports 2.4ghz and 5ghz and right now it's only broadcasting the 5ghz (because that's the way we set it up at our house). I bought some smart bulbs that can only connect to 2.4ghz wifi so I was wondering if there's soemthing you can do to have both 2.4ghz and 5ghz networks out of the same router. If not, would it be possible to set up an AP using a repeater so that I can connect to 2.4ghz?

    Slow wifi

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 12:16 PM PDT

    Hey there

Currently I have 1gig fiber internet provided by ATT (and thus have to use their crappy router, Arris BGW210) and I've noticed that a lot of our devices that cannot be wired in experience slow internet browsing (but decent speed tests) I set the device DNS to google (8.8.8.8) and it helped a little but now I wanted to see if maybe its a coverage issue and add some wireless coverage. What is the best option for this? Something like a google mesh or just purchasing a small home wireless router and setting it to bridge mode?

    thanks

Best way to detect lag problems in my home network

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 04:00 PM PDT

I have been having problems with lag spikes in my network for months now and don't know where to go from here.

Whenever I play an online game I see a lot of rubber banding, usually around 10+ times in an hour. I upgraded all my cables to cat 6a, been through 3 different router brands (edgerouter, r7000, and now have asus ax11000), I've tried 2 different modems, removed all of my switches, and have had multiple visits from my cable company.

I have gig service through RCN and receive around 900 Mbps down and 25 to 30 Mbps up. All the tests they run say everything is fine on their end and they think there is something in my network causing the issue. They recommend dropping everything off my network and adding it back one by one. This is a solid plan, but I am wondering if there might be a better way to do this?

Share xfinity WiFi with neighbors, can I get my own WiFi (private) at the same address if I go in and ask

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 03:38 PM PDT

The WiFi they have is just terrible and unusable for me, my apartment is pretty much in their backyard and they have an extender pointed at my house. Can I ask a provider to get me internet? Or buy my own modem and call a provider to get it activated? (I have no access to their router.. just their WiFi that constantly cuts in and out and has a weak signal)

New Router that isnt Netgear? (Under 100$)

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 02:40 PM PDT

Me and my family are looking to upgrade our current router due to some issues with netgear and our security system.

We currently have xfinity speeds around 250 mbps. We need it to be reliable since usually all of us are on it at once for games, netflix and our security system to save to the cloud.

Doing some research we found the ASUS AC1300 and thought that might work but I was looking for a second opinion. Is there a better router around the same price? Or should we go with the ASUS?
