PSA: Spammers are now using Google Calendar invites for fake security alerts

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 04:50 AM PDT

I got a calendar invite that appeared on my Pixel phone (why isn't this being flagged as spam?!) about an event I had been invited to, which had a dodgy link attached. It looked semi convincing aside from the random person who invited me and weird link.

You may want to double check your Google Privacy settings

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 10:10 AM PDT

A few months back I turned off every data collection option I could in Google's privacy settings except for the calendar and contact sync options. I Just wasn't comfortable with a single company knowing everywhere I go to both physically and on the web on Chrome and Android. Then just yesterday I got an email from Google itself as a "Your August in review" that not only traced everywhere I physically went, but the pictures I took there as well. The latter was especially concerning since there were a few pics that I was not comfortable with being in Google's possession as well as the fact that I never set up anything in my phone to sync pictures with Google Drive. (And what's the point of disabling geo-tagging if Google is just going to tag it with a location anyway?)

So I went back into my privacy settings to see everything had been re-enabled except for the Youtube settings (the only thing I would have noticed quickly had it been changed). Now I've had them all disabled again but I noticed what may be a shady choice of word's on Google's part. There is no option to "terminate" or "stop" Google from tracking your activity, only to "pause" it. Now I'm thinking that I might have to go check in on those settings every now and then to see if Google has "un-paused" their tracking.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? Also does anyone know if there are any implications to the choice of Google labeling their options something with more temporary implications like "pause" or am I just looking to far into it?

[Discussion] Google should let users uninstall Google apps on Android One without rooting

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 01:34 AM PDT

IMHO, some Google apps are kinda useless for me.

Like Play Games, or Play Music, or even Maps, but above all, Chrome. I'm not here to rant about Chrome, but I take the new Firefox Preview over any Chrome any day. It's faster, has a built in dark theme, the UI doesn't suck with the super easy to reach URL bar at the bottom, it's open source, has a built in as blocker, and can sync to my lovely Firefox back home. Only problem with Chrome is that I newer ever managed to get any link from any Google app open in anything else than Chrome if it's installed, so what the F*** Google?

If I want an Android One device ONLY FOR FAST UPDATES , and not for a rather big number of Google apps IMHO, then why can't I? I don't want an iPhone for less Google apps. In fact, I already had an iPhone (4, back in the day, before switching to an Samsung), and I can safely say, in iPhone you feed like in a jail. Customizing you iPhone... Well, good luck! But customizing an Android... 5 minutes or even less! Also, let's not even mention that Apple can fix a cracked glass panel the 2018 lineup of iPhones without replacing the entire backpanel, because the motherboard is glued to it, while on the Nokia 7 Plus, you can replace the screen with a cutter. With a fricking cutter. If you don't believe me, check out JerryRigEverything's "Smartphone Durability Awards 2018".

The main reason I root my phones are:

    • Substratun

    • getting rid of Chrome

Perhaps I'm a bit paranoid about Chrome, but I want to hear what your honest opinion is!

How good are budget smartphones compared to top tier phones like iPhone and Galaxy series phones?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 09:25 PM PDT

I've been considering purchasing a budget smartphone like the G7 to replace my worn out S6. Is there anything I should be prepared for switching from a Galaxy to something like the Moto G7 or am I just way to confident that all that extra money I paid before wasnt a waste?

Theory: Pixel 4 and USA RCS will launch together

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 06:56 PM PDT

I believe that since the new Pixel 4 has a ton of similar camera/dot matrix projector tech as the iPhone that Google will also release a Animoji competitor. With the work they've done on personal stickers and things like that it would be a natural progression and hopefully they add some unique artist so it isn't the same Disney-ske art style.

However, it would be pretty dumb of them to do that while MMS limits are where they're at (if anyone's gotten an Animoji from an iPhone on Android, its trash) so they're going to have to step up their RCS capability to tout being able to send decent looking animations "on the new pixel 4 running Queen Cake."

Unfortunately I have no evidence to point toward, but its just a theory i had the other day.

Thought? Too wishful? Am I living in a dream land where Google doesn't botch another hardware rollout?

How much do you care for 90 Hz and beyond for today's smartphones .

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 03:27 PM PDT

Picking up the note 10 plus soon upgrading from my note 9 . Was disappointed that 10 plus wasn't included in the phone specs but I can live with that .

I wanna hear from ppl who have phones which support 90 and above vs ppl who haven't .what's your thoughts going into the 2020 phone lineup?. Will it become more of common feature ? Which big phone flagship beside October's pixel 4 (rumours) and Asus rog phone 2 will have it as a feature .
