"System" process causing high Disk usage on Windows 10 Home

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 09:11 AM PDT

I have a Lenovo laptop (i5 8th gen, 16GB RAM, 2TB HDD) running Windows 10 Home. After booting up, I usually don't start using it immediately but have the Task Manager open on the screen. I noticed very high disk usage caused by the process "System" & I'm not even using it or have anything running in the background.

It's really bothering me & is there any way I can fix it? Also, is this harmful for my HDD?

Reboot and select proper boot device, or Insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key.

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 12:37 PM PDT

My computer was fine yesterday and last night, but when I woke up the next day and turned on my PC, it told me to reboot snd select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. I tried to change the boot setting on my BIOs and my priorities, but they all failed. I need to know how to fix this. I have an MSI motherboard, if that helps.

Latest Windows 10 update disabled my PIN

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 08:28 AM PDT

I recently had the latest Windows Update installed on my Alienware laptop and as a result, I can no longer sign in using my PIN.

When I tried resetting my PIN, I got a "something went wrong, try again later" message, and after I signed in, I didn't even have the option to create a PIN, as apparently some of the settings are managed by my organization (this despite the fact that I am using my own personal computer, and I am not connected to any domain that I can think of).

Is there anything that can be done? I've even tried locating the NGC folder, and I can't even do anything with that, let alone delete/recreate it. Apparently, I don't have permission to access the folder, even as an administrator.

Latest Win10 Update Deleted my Boot Sector

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 04:32 AM PDT

I like to think of myself as a pretty technically oriented person, but I am at a loss on this one so please bear with me:

About a year ago I installed an SSD in my PC and migrated my boot files over to it (back when it was still Win7). Some time last night my (since then upgraded to Win10 PC) autorestarted to apply an update and when I got up this morning it was booting from that previous partition on the HDD from a year ago. I checked the partition manager and got this:

    https://i.imgur.com/QhAc5Vq.png

Disk 0 is just a 500GB SSD with files on it, nothing to see there.

Disk 1 is the 120GB SSD boot drive with my Win10 that was working fine yesterday.

Disk 2 is the 2TB HDD that apparently I left the bootable Win7 on from a year ago.

Disk 1 still has the EFI System Partition, but it doesn't say "Boot" like Disk 2. I assume thats why my BIOS says there is no bootable drive when I try to boot from it? I tried to use some 3rd party partition recovery software and it found nothing, but are there really any missing partitions? Its like it just lost the boot tag? Can I regenerate the boot files and tell my PC its a bootable drive again? All the files are still on the drive, ready to go.

Windows 10 update messed up sound?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 06:53 AM PDT

I am pretty sure my computer installed updates last night and messed up sound in the process. I have sound most of the time but it cuts out randomly for like 2 seconds and comes back. Anyone have any ideas? I can't seem to find anything.

Windows 10 no longer displays background images correctly

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 02:06 PM PDT

After an update (it was a while ago) Windows no longer handled my background images correctly. I have dual 2560x1440 monitors and would use a 5120x1440 image as background, with the "fit" set to tile. Now, regardless of the file used, Windows will split the image, with approx 25% from the top being displayed on the bottom of the monitor, and the remaining 75% on top of that. When one of the images contains a logo that should appear flush to the bottom of the monitor and the right hand side, that logo now appears 25% of the way up from the bottom. See image.

Anyone have any thoughts on how to fix this?

Latest Windows 10 Update Requires Password

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 03:09 PM PDT

The latest update has suddenly decided to force me to enter my password every time I turn the machine on. Whichever brilliant manager decided to change settings and ignore things the user wants should be slapped in the face.
How do I turn this off, forever? I never, ever, ever want to have to enter my damn password when my computer turns on, or wakes up, or comes out of hibernation, or the screensaver turns on, or whatever.

It seems like the "sign-in options" "never" option doesn't do squat.

All passwords/extensions lost after updating windows

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 07:03 AM PDT

Forgot my passphrase since I sync'd it couple of years ago and never had issues. Updated from 1809 to 1903 and now all my stuff is gone. I recovered old files from %appdata% but chrome still doesn't give me back any of my extensions or passwords... I have no clue how to contact google since their support is horrible, any suggestions?

It was working last night and it randomly restarted and my USB adapter stopped working. Now my laptop I was just using and it blue screened giving me error "IRQL not less than or equal" after the restart my network adapter in the laptop isn't working and it isn't appearing in device manager. Should I reinstall windows or is there a fix?

Volume doesn't change when unplugging headphones, or plugging them in.

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 05:29 PM PDT

It used to be that it "saves" what the volume is from when I last had my headphones unpluged, so it plays through the speakers. But now it doesn't. So if I had the speaker volume muted, then plug in headphones they would also be at 0, then turn up the sound to about 20, then unplug the headphones the speaker volume would be at 20 also, instead of going back to 0.

It used to work fine about a week ago. Is there maybe an option in sound settings I need to change?
