Paying for gigabit download getting half that. Netgear CM1100 modem/nighthawk x6s ac3000 router.

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 07:57 AM PDT

This is a cut and copy of my post on the netgear forums that received no answers from 2 weeks ago. I'm hoping someone here can offer suggestions and help. According to Comcast "It all looks good on our end." "Your equipment so contact the manufacturer."

    Hi all,

I just upgraded to comcast gigabit for my home (not fiber). I had to replace my modem (cm700) for a CM1100 in order to get the speeds I am paying for. When I am hooked directly into the modem my speeds are exactly what I am supposed to get. After activation I hooked my modem into my R7900 X6S AC3000 router and immediately did a speedtest (done multiple times today). My measured speeds fluctuate between 470 Mbps to 680 Mbps (more often in the 470 range) I've turned off QoS, am using Cat 5e or 6 ethernet cables (both cables from modem to router are the supplied cables from the modem). I've activated WAN aggregation hoping that maybe that would help (It hasn't). I'm not sure what else I can do. The router just got an update 3 days ago and the modem is brand new with no way to update, except through Comcast. I could really use some help figuring out what else to do to get my speeds.

    Asus Port Forwarding Issue

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 07:15 PM PDT

So this has been happening for too long and is now just an inconvenience. My RT-AC86U router does not want to port forward. I have looked into this for so long but have found no results. When I go to create a new profile/port forward it adds it correctly but when I even leave the tab or turn port forwarding on and off, all of the stuff I have just added is gone. So in the picture I would create a identical one with a new port but then it wont save it. I really don't know how that one active one got saved, but it won't work. All the people I see have an apply button to press but this one doesn't.

    Thanks in Advance

Yet another MoCA Post - Requesting a fact check - TWC in Durham, NC with Motorola MM1000 MoCA 2.0 Bonded Adapters

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 05:30 PM PDT

    Hi all,

Read several dozen other posts about MoCA, but they all seemed to be unique, so I figured it was OK to post.

Network engineer by training and trade here, so I'm intimately familiar with IP networks, but haven't really messed much with Coax networks up until now.

Moved in with my girlfriend last month and her townhouse, which is 2015 construction, has NO Ethernet ports anywhere in the house. Being a techie, and wanting everything wired as much as possible, I am resigned to using MoCA, as installing drops is not an option right now.

I've done some research and I understand the protocol, understand that it splits the signal based on the frequencies, and that splitters/POE filters are important. Where I am struggling/requesting a fact check is because I believe Time Warner wired this house completely ass-backwards, so I want to make sure this works before I spend too much time on it.

    Equipment

    • 2x Motorola MM1000 Bonded MoCA 2.0 adapters
    • Arris TM1602 Modem (Provided by TWC, replacing isn't an option as my girlfriend needs their phone service for working from home)
    • Netgear R6400 Wi-Fi router (I will be placing this upstairs with her eventually, and use my ASUS RT-AC66U downstairs if I can get MoCA working)

    Current Layout

Outside feed --> Outdoors ISP demarc with a 4-way, 5 to 1050 MHz splitter @ -7 dB --> Coax directly to Modem in the living room --> Cat5 to Netgear Wi-Fi Rotuer

    Proposed layout??

Outside feed --> ISP demarc --> POE filter prior to splitter --> Coax to MOCA --> Coax from MOCA to Modem --> Cat5 from Modem to Netgear Bedroom Coax outlet --> MOCA adapter --> cat5 to switch --> home office equipment Den coax outlet --> MOCA adaper --> cat5 to managed l3 switch --> my lab network/NAS/desktop/PS3/TV/other stuff

What's backwards about this is that there are homeruns directly to the filter on the demarc and then into the house, I believe. The drop in the living room where the modem is plugged in is a homerun they ran separately directly to the splitter -- I have no idea where the other cables plugged into the splitter go. In short, I think the coax run that is currently plugged into the modem is separate from the remaining coax connections, and that the remaining ports in the house may not be wired the same. Girlfriend had cable TV previously and she said she just plugged the set top box into the coax in the wall. So, are these two separate feeds? Is there some way to combine them now that we have cancelled the TV?

Will the network I've described above work? If not, what am I missing? I've attached pictures of the outside demarc in case that makes it clear --- I'd be installing the POE filter off the orange colored cable, right before it hits that filter (though, I'm not entirely sure if the fitting it is connected to is some type of filter already or not)

Thank you for your help in advance!

Upgrade Advice Needed: Parental Controls and Better Speeds

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 08:58 AM PDT

Hello reddit, my first post in this forum. We are in a 4000 sq.ft 2 story house. My current setup is:

    Patch-panel: comcast->300 Mbps ->Motorola SB6141->Asus RT56NU (wifi-off, just wired router)

Upper Story: Archer C9 (Tplink AC1900)

Lower Story: D-link AC1200 (DAP1650) dual band range extender

    equipments are ~4 yrs old.

    Now

    • We barely get 70 Mbps on wifi (but 270 Mbps on wired).
    • We need much stronger parental controls with controls on my phone. Kids esp. the high-schooler is very tech savvy and can hack many things.
    • Comcast keeps telling me that my modem is 5yrs too old for these services (even though the modem is DOCSIS3.0)

My choices (Please, I need your advise!)

    • Replace the Asus RT56NU by AC66 or AC68u:
      • pros: I get a much better parental controls
      • cons: seems a bit too thick for my patch panel housing.
    • Replace everything by ubiquiti unifi
      • pros: seems like a one time effort

May be there are other choices like using a mikrotik for the wired router (but the parental (aka kid) control seems pretty archaic)

Can't get new router to work with old Combo

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 08:12 PM PDT

Hello all. So I have a Netgear c7000 router/wifi combo. I also just bought a Netgear r8000'tri band router. I'm trying to use my first Netgear as a modem alone and then use my new R8000 as the router alone. I disabled DHCP server on my first router (C7000) also disabled it broadcasting both SSID's.

I have my C7000's first Ethernet port plugged into my new R8000's WAN port but I don't have internet.

Anybody's advice is welcome, just want to get back to some Gears of War

    Extending Network

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 08:00 PM PDT

I am working on extending, or making stronger, connections over my network. My issue is that i have a baby-camera on the second floor of my house that loses connection to the 2.4 Ghz wireless signal. I figured the solution would be to run cable and place an access point upstairs.

My isp insists I use a Zyxel modem bringing signal into my house. I turned off its wireless capabilities, and set up a Nighthawk R6700v3 as my WAP.

I have a Netgear c6300 (AC1750 modem router) that is about 5 years old. I am unable to use it with my current ISP because it accepts signal over coax, and I am using fiber. It worked great before, so I figured I would turn off its DHCP, change its ssid... basically stop it from thinking and just have it be an AP.

Here's the issue - I am unable to access it's management console.

I am cabling my devices to each other: Zyxel <>Cat 5<>R6700<>Cat5<>C6300<>Cat5<>computer. Ip Address ending with 1.1 goes to the R6700. So what's the C6300 IP address? Hell it's probably somewhere between 2 and 10, but what a pain! So I'm like, Command Prompt here we come!

I go to command prompt and ping 255, then arp -a. I see 6 devices, but not C6300's physical address/MAC. So I try ipconfig /all and I see 6 devices on my network but again not the C6300.

I have tried changing ports of the cable into the switch. I have used a broadcast analyzer to see its signal.I have reset the device. But I am unable to get to its console.

Any suggestions will be appreciated, thanks.

New modem and router, looking at the CM1000 and X4S

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 09:59 AM PDT

I'll be moving to a new apartment soon and don't want to rent a box from the ISP (Xfinity).

Are the CM1000 modem and X4S router by Netgear still best in the price range? I've heard of people struggling to get gigabit service using either of these components so if there are any obviously better choices I'd like to know.

How do I know which 802.11 standard a WiFi access point supports?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 01:23 PM PDT

Can a single WiFi SSID support multiple 802.11 standards, e.g. a/b/g/n/ac? How do I know which standard(s) a particular SSID supports? Let's say I have a list of WiFi SSIDs being broadcasted where my laptop/phone is located. If I want to know which standard a particular SSID is running on, how do I do that? "WiFi Analyzer" app on Android shows the band and channel information for the SSIDs being broadcasted. However, it doesn't tell you which 802.11 standard is being supported by the SSID. Technically speaking, a 5GHz SSID can be 802.11a/n/ac or a 2.4GHz SSID can be supporting 802.11b/g/n standards.

Netgear Nighthawk X6S R8000P 2.4 ghz constantly dropping for almost a year now

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 07:17 PM PDT

So ive been having these problems for months now, im over it as ive been trying everything in my power to fix it. My 2.4 network is absolutely garbage. It is constantly losing connection. My 5ghz networks work great no problem. I have many devices that use 2.4 only and i have my google homes, wifi switches outlets, thermostat on it also(since then ive changed to the 5ghz)

I have the latest firmware, ive reset the router (twice) ive changed the channel from auto to different channels and im all out options. Is this a hardware issue or what? I would roll back to a older firmware but this happened months after the latest firmware at that time, it didnt happen after a firmware update

Also im looking at my logs and im seeing nothing but constant [DoS attack: RST Scan is this anything related? not sure whats going on

if i have to get a new router should i go with an mesh system? I have many many devices (near 30 total including wifi switches) and the first year of owning the nighthawk its was great

Switched to ATT Fiber, Netflix immediately got hacked. Coincidence?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 03:09 PM PDT

We just had ATT fiber installed and watched Netflix to test it out. We use Google mesh WiFi, so I just had to plug it back in, didn't have to set up password/re-login. The second we started watching Netflix, Netflix emailed me saying they noticed I signed in from Cairo, then right after that notified me that my email had been successfully changed. Never had a breach before.

Has something like this happened to anyone? Are there different protocols across different services? Could ATT fiber be putting us at higher risk of data breaches? The tech said this could happen any time and to call Netflix (obvi), but he can't tell me this is not suspicious...

Cable modem power levels too high?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 06:55 PM PDT

I am getting power levels of ~10.0 dBmV. Am I correct in thinking that adding a splitter will help lower these? I only have internet and was thinking of adding a splitter and terminating the extra port.

These are what I was thinking of adding:

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000AAN76Y/

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008R3LOM0/

    Would these work?

I will also need a pigtail.

I looked on monoprice and found this:

Any advice or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

    Unifi NanoHD Or Keep AC3100

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 06:55 PM PDT

I have a question, I currently upgraded from my AC3100 Asus all in one router to an EdgeRouter 4 from Ubiquiti. I am currently using the 3100 as an AP and there are 15 plus devices connected all the time and more when people are over. Would I see a benefit with the Ubiquiti NanoHD or is the AC3100 good enuff? I am also using a wifi extender to get internet on the front porch and deck as the router and AP are in the back of the house.

I’ve just moved into a guesthouse and the WiFi coverage is bleak. What all should be considered before selecting the best solution?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 12:02 PM PDT

The two buildings are about 20-30 feet apart, with the router located about 10-15 feet away from our current NetGear Extender Model: EX6150v2 which gives me about 1 bar to work with for multiple devices. Looking for a high performance solution at a reasonable price point.

What else is helpful to know?

Can you disable wifi on the TP-Link AC1200 smart wifi router?

Why are many USB Wifi adapters being advertised to deliver 1200 Mbps while they are not capable to operate over both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands simultaneously?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 01:55 PM PDT

I have a list of USB WiFi adapters shortlisted from Amazon. All of them seem to be promising to deliver 1200 Mbps speed. Google says, a single network card ca connect to either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz band; but not both simultaneously. In that case, either I will experience 5GHz/867Mbps or 2.4GHz/300Mbps speed; but not a combined 1200 Mbps (I assume 867+300=1167; which is roughly equal to 1200 Mbps they are advertising). Is my understanding correct? Is it just a marketing bait?

New home. Requesting suggestions for network

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 10:04 AM PDT

Hello all. We will be moving to a new home within the next 2 weeks. The house is single-story and 2100 sq. ft. The house comes pre-wired for 1 camera in the front over the garage , one in the back patio, an in-ceiling WAP near the kitchen, 1 Cat 5e by the doorbell for possible future use(house will come with a Ring Pro installed by the builder), in ceiling 7.1 prewire and 2-speaker prewire for back patio. Our recessed media box will be in the master closet across the other side of the house from the WAP. I will have room to put a rack if needed.

For security: What is the recommendation nowadays? We like the Ring's motion notifications but we'd like to get something that is POE and possibly PTZ for the front. Unifi's Protect system catches my attention but I haven't seen anything regarding instant notification like Ring.

For networking: Since I will have a 2 cameras and a WAP, what is recommended for POE switches, regular switches, routers, and NVR? Also saw Unify's setup but again any recommendations are welcomed. I'm not tied or loyal to any particular brand.

For audio: This will be a 2 zone setup. The 7.1 is spread between the living room and dining room. I'm not looking for a movie theater experience. Just a nice setup to use for movies and music. There is a subwoofer connection in the kitchen behind the living room. The second zone will be outside. I also currently have an XBOX 1. All the audio cables terminate in the living room under the tv's outlets.

    Thanks!

    Replace nighthawk r7000 with velop ac3900 or tp-link m9?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 01:40 PM PDT

My nighthawk has never gotten anything more than 25mbps (2.4ghz) or 30mbps (5ghz) on WiFi (speed test app on iPhone), even standing next to the router.

    On Ethernet it gets ~100mbps.

Using the nighthawk app's speed test it says about 300mbps.

Moved and now I'm getting <6mpbs in some corners (upstairs, router is downstairs) of my house with the nighthawk so I figure I need to upgrade my router

6 linksys velop ac3900 (6 is def over kill but the more the merrier right?)

    Or

    Tp-link m9 (3 pk)

Need help with AC3600, chromcast and AT&T modem/router

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 05:17 PM PDT

So this is my current set up.

I have a fiber connection of 125 mbs up/down that is wired to a AT&T supplied router/modem combo. This combo device is then ethernet wired to a nighthawk AC3600. I previously had a RT-N56U which i had replaced with the AC 3600. The chromecast is connected to the AT&T router/modem.

Previously, I was able to chrome cast with any device connected to my RT-N56U. However after I replaced it with the AC3600, I can't chromecast with any devices connected on the AC3600.

I've been trying to figure out how to get around this. My previous RT-N56U had some setting where it just acted like an access point. Are there any pro's/cons in setting up my AC3600 as an a router or bridge mode?

Edit: I switched the AC 3600 to AP mode and it didn't seem to have changed anything.

Asus RT-N66R, wired, has slow speeds -- could use some help.

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 05:16 PM PDT

I'm currently on a gigabit connection through Comcast and all my wired devices are struggling to get anything above 200mb/s down on speedtest.net when using an RT-N66R. I'm pretty sure the device is capable of gigabit speeds, but I'm not even getting close to that.

I have NAT Acceleration turned on in the router, and it's on the latest firmware (3.0.0.4.382_51640). My devices are physically connected to the router, and the router is connected to a Netgear CM1000 which is gigabit capable.

Interesting enough, plugging my computer directly into my modem doesn't work -- I get no internet access, despite obtaining IP/DNS automatically. I can't even hit the modem page (192.168.100.1).

    Any help would be appreciated.

Internet signal too hot ISP is useless

I have a motorolla all in one router and wifi. model mg7550 ac1900 16x4 (downstream and upstream).I pay for 200 speed. I I can post photos, but my SNR is in spec 41.0-41.5. dBmu is between 9.9-12.9 but goes higher with a 3db attenuator on the modem. this cuts my dl speed in half... I can bring down the db more into spec with a 6db attenuator but this brings down my signal even more. motorolla has told us our signal is too hot. and cablevision has been here 3 times, replaced and outside wire which is 50ish feet away from our house which I was told the regulations for the rg cable is 100ft from street to house. cablevision has basically given us an ultimatum of 1, use a 6db attenuator cutting dl speed to 40-50. 2, have a hot signal. or 3 buy their modem. I am at my wits end here and have taken time off of work for a game release but my internet hasn't been working properly for months. someone please help!

Slow Wifi Standing Next to Router

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 09:56 AM PDT

My router is a Linksys AC1750 and I have a 500 Mbps internet service. On direct ethernet connection I usually get around 400 Mbps down, and 25 Mbps Up

However, I can never get too much over 200Mbps on any wireless device, laptop, cellphone, tablets, etc. I can be standing next to the router and still get only 200 Mbps. I'm on 5Ghz.

Where could my other 50-60% bandwidth have gone?
