Solved: Dual channel RAM not working

Solved: Dual channel RAM not working

Solved: Dual channel RAM not working

    Posted: 16 Aug 2019 06:55 AM PDT

I apologize if this is a duplicate, mods feel free to delete. I just wish I'd seen a post like this when I originally had this issue.

I built a Z270 system a while back and found that it would not boot (or POST at all - no beeps, nothing) with any DIMMs installed in slots A1 or A2. I was, however, able to get it to boot with DIMMs in slots B1 and B2. OK, no problem, I just lived with it. Still got my 16GB of RAM anyway.

Recently I became annoyed at the lack of dual channel so I decided it must be a board problem. Bought a new Z270 board, rebuilt. Guess what? DIMMs only worked in slots B1 and B2. Same chipset, different manufacturers. Gotta be the DIMMs, right? So I ordered new DIMMs on Prime Now and during the two hour wait I re-googled for the hundredth time about dual channel not working on a Z270, blah blah blah.

I came across a post from 2015 suggesting that the problem might be that the CPU cooler being bolted too tightly can cause issues like this. Something with board flex. Sounded insane to me but at this point I'd try anything because the next link in the chain was a faulty CPU. Well, guess what? Removed the Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO, loosened the nuts that hold the bracket to the board, reseated the heat sink and didn't tighten the screws that hold the cooler to the bracket as much. Then I moved the DIMM from B1 to A2 and...viola. It worked. Dual channel RAM. Go figure.

TL;DR - If you're having problems with some DIMM slots causing your system not to POST in a new build, try loosening the screws holding down your CPU cooler (but not so much that it doesn't make contact). The result might surprise you.

PC isn’t showing any signs of life... please help...

    Posted: 16 Aug 2019 03:37 PM PDT

I recently received the CPU and Motherboard from Newegg. The motherboard box said "Ryzen 3000 desktop ready" and I am using the R5 3600. I have a used pair of 8GB 2400mhz RAM sticks, a used WiFi/Bluetooth card, a used R9 380 Windforce card and that's it. Everything is used, except the CPU and MoBo. The power supply, GPU, and WiFi adapters are confirmed working. My pc won't show any signs of life. It's not the front panel buttons, and everything is plugged in correctly. Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm thinking maybe the motherboard is dead out of the box. But there aren't any physical signs of it being broken. Neither any physical problems on anything.

Posted a prospective build a week ago. Learned a lot in the comments on this sub already. Updated build with a Ryzen 3900x. Any feedback?

    Here's the link: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/hindlehan/saved/4XgK4D

Looks like DDR4-3600 is the way to go to get the most out of the CPU/RAM configuration based on this Linus vid. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHJ16hD4ysk. I also opted for somewhat low latency 3600 (if CAS 18 can be considered low?), but not the lowest as I still want to keep the cost somewhat reasonable :).

I have a 1440p 165hz monitor, so I updated my build with a 2080 super based on feedback on my last post.

Changed the case to a Corsair Air 540 because it seems like an excellent case for air cooling, isn't crazy expensive, and I love the cube aesthetic.

Any other thoughts on how I could improve this and still keep it around the current price of $2300?

Any feedback is very much appreciated!!

    Upgraded 980 to 5700xt

    Posted: 16 Aug 2019 07:18 AM PDT

    Troubleshooting Help:

What is your parts list? Consider formatting your parts list.

    -i7-4790k

    -MSI z97 gaming 7

    -Corsair 2x8gb

    -XFX 5700xt

    -Corsair RM 1000

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Replaced 980 with a 5700xt and everything was going smoothly. I installed drivers and updated afterburner for a more recent update that would allow it to control the 5700xt. Anytime I have afterburner open my monitors will blink to a black screen for half a second probably every ten seconds.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

    -Uninstalled/Reinstalled Drivers

-Removed OC from CPU and RAM

    -Uninstalled/Reinstalled GPU

-Removed Nvidia Drivers and GeForce Experience

-Removed Afterburner (this technically resolved issue but I would like to use afterburner)

-Reinstalled Afterburner and the issue persisted

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

Replace this text with your answer.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I'm not too sure what to do at this point. I like to consider my self good with computers but this has me stumped. I would like to not have reinstall windows as a whole, I don't see how that would fix the issue anyway.

    i9900k with 128 GM RAM on a z390 motherboard?!?!?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2019 01:06 PM PDT

Just a quick backstory of why I want this build.

So I work primarily with After Effects. After effects loves the i9900k and it is considered the best cpu to purchase atm because of it's high core count (5.0Ghz). Adobe removed the "render multiple frames simultaneously" for GPU acceleration, this means numbers cores don't matter, core count does. This is supported by tests from pugetsystems.

After Effects LOVES RAM. If you can allocate more RAM it just performs significantly better. Tests have been done on pugetsystems that prove this.

Intel announced the i9900k can run 128 GB RAM now, the z390 Motherboard I want to purchase says it can handle 128GB RAM but requires 4 x 32GB DDR4 DIMM

Would this RAM be worth it? If not, any recommendations? Also is anything I mentioned a good idea, or should I just stick to the 64GB RAM?

EDIT: Turns out the RAM I linked is not compatible. What about this RAM ?

MOBO - ASUS B450 PRO TUF

    GPU - GTX 1660 TI

    CPU - AMD RYZEN 7 3700X

    PSU - THERMALTAKE 600W BRONZE

    RAM - 2 X 16 GB CORSAIR VENGEANCE DDR4 3000

    SSD - 1TB SAMSUNG 860 QVO

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I've tried two monitors with hdmi, dp, vga sockets, but I still dont get any signals to the monitor, doesnt work with motherboard's integrated hdmi either. It also seems i can't do a proper restart of the computer, have to hold the power button.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

At this point I've tried almost everything, including trying to reseat most(all?)of the parts and cables, at the moment I keep it with minimum amount of cables and parts. (Pretty much leaving only gpu in there).

I have gotten 15ish windows blue screen shutdowns in less than a week.

    Posted: 16 Aug 2019 03:38 PM PDT

I built my new AMD computer shortly after July 7th. I bought a 3700x cpu, a 5700 xt gpu and the Aorus x570 mobo. Aside from the constant green and pink screens I got from the crapy gpu drivers everything seemed to work. I was using my old pcs Windows 10 installation on my new computer.

A few days ago I decided to do a fresh install of windows on my new M.2 hp ssd. Since then, about August 12th when the newest windows update dropped I have been getting constant blue screens. They usually happen if I try and run two applications at once. For example I was playing r6 Siege while in discord and I alt tabbed. Boom blue screen.

I have been getting all kinds of stop codes. After fresh installing I can't launch applications because I have been getting errors like VCRUNTIME140.dll and MSVCP140.Dll. I am truly lost as to what I need to do. I tried rolling about Windows, I tried fresh installing my W10 3 times. I am sick of having to redownload my games. Please help if you can.

Sorry about the lack of formating and grammar but I am shaking with anger on mobile right now.

    New case for under $100

    Posted: 16 Aug 2019 01:50 PM PDT

I'm looking to change my case from my current one. Due to it being a prebuilt (ya ya ya) it has the base case which is a cyberpower x620 saber. This case literally has as little air flow as permissible. A little 1 inch x 3 inch slot on the bottom of the front panel (which can have 2x120mm) and one exhaust 120mm is all it offers. I've been looking into new cases which offer the best air flow for the money. I would prefer it to be a mid tower due to my current mobo (x470 gaming plus) and full tower is too big for me. I was looking at the two h500's for sale, being the nzxt and coolermaster. I really like the coolermaster one for the 2x200mm fans up front on the mesh faceplate, and also capability for a 240mm radiator on the top. Anyone build in this case or either and have bad experiences? Any input as to another case that would offer good airflow and functionality?

MSI B450 Tomahawk Max CPU error HELP!!

    Posted: 16 Aug 2019 11:00 AM PDT

    TL;DR at bottom

I just bought a MSI B450 Tomahawk Max, ryzen 5 3600 and a cm master liquid lite 120. When installing the cooler I spilt some thermal paste on the motherboard. I tried to clean it with a paper towel and got some of it but there was some still left. I finished installing the parts and booted the PC. It booted for 25 mins and I was able to overclock it. After I restarted it there was no display and the light for CPU Fail or no CPU on the motherboard lit up. I have ordered some isopropyl alcohol which is delivered tomorrow, I just have a few questions:

    1. Will I have done any serious damage to the cpu or MOBO? If so is it fixable?

    2. Is there anything I can do in the mean time to help my situation?

    3. If the MOBO or CPU is broken will I be able to return and get a refund?

TL;DR- Split some thermal paste on MOBO and it booted. Restarted and cpu light came on. Won't show display now.

I could use some Monitor and KVM switch suggestions

    Posted: 16 Aug 2019 07:09 AM PDT

I am wanting to be able to dock my work laptop, hit a switch, and use my comfy home peripherals. I'd prefer to do that on the hardware side, since installing any sort of software on the laptop is a pain. Any suggestions on a good 2-port KVM switch for home use?

I'd also like to replace my current monitor with a pair of 27"-32" screens. Their primary use will be for gaming with a bit of coding work on the side. Latency is my primary concern. I'm hoping to stick to around $400ish or below per monitor.

I'm not 100% set on a resolution. I thought about moving up to 4k for future proofing, but my gaming PC is aging. So I'm guessing that would require a graphics card update.

    Current machine:

    GTX 970

    i7-4790K

    Asus Z97 motherboard

So given that info what are your recommendations on monitors and/or possibly upgrading the GFX?

Best option for a Redundant Storage Backup? Two Bay Dock w/ Software, NAS?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2019 04:02 PM PDT

So this has been something been meaning to do for awhile and as I've started keeping alot of Raw footage from videos I've been recording for a game. I can see myself wanting to keep that, among other files backup locally, with redundancy. (Majority of my important files are already cloud backed up through dropbox or other means and are generally small in size)

I don't really want to move to going into 100% Cloud for the back-ups as I do not have unlimited bandwidth at the moment, however I could for 15$/mo more than I currently pay. (Have 350/350 up/down)

NAS's seem pretty expensive for my use's, I don't have immediate need for remote drive access at least it isn't worth the price difference alone.

And I would likely just be moving files to the drive/s on a back-up basis after I'm done with them on my desktop. So I figured using cloning software would likely be fine and having that scheduled to run every day or whenever there are changes.

Would there be any issue with going this way with like a dual dock on USB 3.1 over other solutions?

Know almost nothing about motherboards please help!

    Posted: 16 Aug 2019 03:59 PM PDT

My current parts I'm set on, I will be playing at 1080 (1440 maybe) games competitively and I don't know anything about motherboards except there audio chipsets? Would that matter in competitive anyways? I was gonna get the B450 MAX just cause it's cheap and don't need to BIOS flash it for the R5 3600. My budget was 1k but I can go a little over. Thank you for any help in advance. I know I keep posting here but I want to make sure every part of my PC is near perfect and not regret anything in the future.

EDIT: I'm not near my router so I will need some sort of WiFi adapter that's built in or separate.

    Is a Ryzen 5 2600x, and a RX 5700XT a good pairing?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2019 03:57 PM PDT

I know the 5700XT is more than capable of 1440p 60+FPS, but I'm not sure if I'm better off with a 3000 series CPU as the 2600x May drag back performance.

Take your time to build your PC

    Posted: 16 Aug 2019 03:55 PM PDT

My dumbass screwed up one of my memory channels.

I got to excited and rushed building my new pc just to play already. As I was installing the cpu cooler, it slipped out of my sweaty hands and landed on the motherboard and I didnt take much note of that. I eventually got it all built together and it was time to see her power on. The lights flash constant on and the fans spin on but the screen is black, I wait another minute or so and now I am really worried. So now I am trying to figure out why my isnt powering on, I remove the gpu first and nothing. Then I remove the ram from the slot and notice that this did not change the behavior of how the pc behaving when trying to boot.

That was when it struck me instantly, I realized that I had dropped the cooler on to the motherboard and it must of nicked one of the ram line traces. And sure enough after inspecting, there was a nick on a single ram line trace and I hypothesized that If I damaged that specified channel, then at least the other 3 should work. I change the ram to a different slot and the machine starts puffing, lighting up with flashes, chirping, and the fans making all sorts of sounds and boom, the bios screen appears.

I was too lazy to return the motherboard for a new one as I could of said it was defective, but decided that would be an asshole move and owned up to my self. I then said F$#@ it and grabbed my soldiering iron and bridged the broken trace.

TLDR; I got in a rush, dropped the cooler on mother board, spent hours trying to fix it, realized I broke a ram trace line.

Take your time to build your pc, I learned the hard way and this was my second build

    EDIT: GRAMMAR
