    Simple Questions - August 31, 2019

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 05:12 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

After using this build for 3 years, I discovered one ram stick was installed in the wrong slot

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 02:26 AM PDT

I upgraded to a Sapphire RX 5700 Pulse yesterday from a GTX 960, but still games were stuttering. I felt dissapointed and went to bed. In the morning I read some tips of stuff to check on this subreddit, and I ran Userbenchmark. There I found out my memory was performing way below standards, and when I took my motherboard manual I discovered it was installed the wrong way for years. Now my games are extremely smooth...

    Best ultra HD monitor setup?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 01:46 PM PDT

Dear internet. Why in this so hard?

I have always had 3+ computer screens. For a while I was using a 55 inch 4k tv as my living room was too small. Now I got a bigger place. Now I need to replace my 10 year old Asus pro art screen setup.

Unlike most people I realized that screen rates don't matter. I play factorio usually. Sometimes Diablo or StarCraft. No shooters. Some MMOs. I have come to love my ultrawide at work.

I've been looking for a 4k+++ monitor. Either 3 smaller screens are 2 stacked ultrawide screens. Don't care about curved or not. Hdr and gsync in nice but not needed. Hdr is really appealing but worth sacrificing screen size.

I looked into TV's. My 55 inch is a bit big for a desk. Also it suffers blooming as I didn't get the array led version. It bothers me a lot. Oleds have burn it's.

I feel like I really just want a 40 inch TV that has low input lag and no blooming effects.

The issue I have with most urtrawides is that there are essentially wide 2k screen, they skimp on the vertical resolution for realistate. Blah.

I'm looking to spend less than 1500 all in. Ideas? I just want full emersion. Predictors are nice but too expensive. I won't buy anything Asus. I've had so many things go wrong with asus over the years. My screens all have nasty lines of pixles and all 3 have had to be replaced. (laptop was fixed 4 times till I gave up, won't talk about that motherboard). Not a fan of Samsung as they are all washed out.

Holy shit I did it! Updated Bios on B350M Board for Ryzen Series 3000!

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 12:32 AM PDT

I'm sooo excited! Long story made short. Upgraded from Ryzen 1600 to Ryzen 3600. Had Msi B350M board since i heard scary stories of updating bios, and people having a hard time doing so on even B450 boards. So i decided to purchase Asrock Steel Legend. After installing everything, it worked well until i tried to put headphones into the front panel. It would recognize them for a second and then disappear, rinse & repeat. Searched google long and hard. Uninstalled drivers, reinstalled drivers, etc. Nothing worked. At this point i said fucked it, lets put the old board back in with 1600 to see if it was mother board issue. Front panel headphone jack played flawlessly. So I decided to update bios. At first if forgot to extract files in which it was a process of exchanging out cpu's. (Yea im not the brightest) After flashing and installing bios, my PC posted!!!! And everything works!! I had to tell someone and with my wife asleep, I thought i would post to the community. Soooo ecstatic!!!

TLDR: After many hours of trouble shooting audio problems, updated bios on old board and everything worked with Ryzen 3600!

1st PC build! If I Can You Can too! Judge me!

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 01:35 PM PDT

Hey everyone! I'm 17 and I have autism! Switched over to PC after realizing Console is not enough for my needs anymore, but having autism I felt that me building a PC was far out of my reach so after trying to studying up on build guides and absolute months of learning with family help, I came up with this build! So if I can do it and at least attempt it everyone can!!

    CPU: Ryzen 5 2600x

    CPU Cooler: Stock cooler

    Motherboard: Asus Prime B450-A

Ram: Corsair Vengeance RGB pro 16gb 3200mhz

    GPU:MSI Radeon RX 580 Armor OC 8gb

PSU: SeaSonic M12 ll 80+ Bronze Evo edition

    Case: NZXT H500

    Monitor: Sceptre 165hz 1ms

Upon building I came to know it was much harder than I had anticipated, I was confused and unorganized at first, but later I focused in and stuck to what I knew. Since my autism makes focusing in a challenge at times. Once I had thought everything was in and ready I flipped it on and everything lid up and the happiness on my face was everything, plugged in my monitor and it said "No signal - Check Input!" My dreams felt crushed.. and I started to cry. I couldn't believe all those months of learning gone to the can, I started to believe was my learning deficiency to blame ? Can you guys help me figure out what I did or could've done wrong? All fans/components spin and lights light up. Any help would be appreciated !

    Can I rebuild my PC

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 02:34 PM PDT

Hey I already know this is a stupid question, but if I wanted to let's say switch cases etc can I remove all the parts from my old case and put them in my new one without any problems? motherboard, reapply thermal paste on cpu, etc or is there any disadvantage to doing that? Thanks.

BIOS glitching and freezing w/Ryzen 3600x - B450 Msi Carbon AC

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 03:01 PM PDT

So recently someone put together parts that I bought for my first pc build. (To be more exact, placing the components on the board, using the bios flashback feature to update the bios in order to make it compatible with the new gen Ryzen CPU, and installing the so called *free* version of Win 10 from Microsoft's site).

It's been a day or so since I've been using the PC, the performance seems to be as expected. I've also been experiencing some presumably secondary issues with the monitor (I hardly think it's related to the bios issues), in the sense that sometimes it can only display up to 1280x1024 *shows as recommended*, instead of the native 1920x1080). I should also mention that I use an adapter from DP to VGA.

I've opened the bios to see if there's any hint at whats going on with the monitor/resolution, and everything was in chinese and the menus were glitching (not severely glitching, but it certainly wasn't behaving as intended), only to freeze completely after a moment. (As I previously mentioned faintly in the title, the motherboard I have is a B450 Msi Gaming Pro Carbon AC). I then proceeded to click the power button on the case and the PC booted as normal, but after checking again, the bios behaves the same way and I'm really concerned that the bios update might've been executed poorly or that the motherboard is faulty.

    Thank you in advance!

The icing on the cake of a good PC build.. A comfy chair!

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 02:55 PM PDT

Hey all, I'm looking for a good (gaming?) computer chair. Something that reaches the head and can support that area, as I end up having an achey neck sometimes.

But that's not a deal breaker, as I'm not sure if that will even resolve my problem.. But any recommendations from you guys? Preferably people in the UK, as I can purchase them if the recommendation is good enough.

In short, I'm looking for comfort, head support and arm rests of course. Also, not the ones that look like race car seats lol.

    Thanks in advance.

    Defective Ryzen 3900X?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 07:22 AM PDT

I recently ordered components for a full Ryzen 3900X build. Everything went smoothly until I went to do some benchmarking I noticed poor performance.

After some reboots, the computer would not POST. I isolated this to a particular stick of ram. I had a 32GB kit so I figured no problem, I can replace this and just test with 2 of the sticks for 16GB.

I quickly realized that it was no longer recognizing anything beyond one stick, regardless of which stick, regardless of which slots, so after testing with a different PSU and I began to suspect the motherboard.

Today I got the new mobo in, put it all together with the brand new ram, and yellow light, ram not detected. I haven't yet returned the old kit, I've tested all 8 sticks and nothing.

Sounds odd to me, but could I have a defective CPU that is preventing the RAM from working properly? When it ran it seemed stable other than the performance in 3dmark and being unable to read more than the one stick at a time.

    First build:

    Type Item Price
    CPU AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 3.8 GHz 12-Core Processor -
Motherboard Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Hero (WI-FI) ATX AM4 Motherboard -
    Memory Crucial Ballistix Elite 32 GB (4 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 Memory -
Storage Samsung 970 Evo 500 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive $89.99 @ Amazon
Case Phanteks Enthoo Luxe TG ATX Full Tower Case $179.99 @ Amazon
Power Supply EVGA SuperNOVA G3 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply $110.00 @ Amazon

    Second build:

Same thing except motherboard changed to a ASUS ROG Strix X570-E Gaming ATX

The second ram kit was the same as the original, it was a straight exchange.

    tl;dr

Ram not detected. First board detected one stick at a time, new one never.

    • 2 kits of RAM tested
    • 2 motherboards tested, bios updated on first, didn't get to post on second
    • 2 PSUs tested
    • 1 CPU, no bent pins, tried reseating

Side question: how pissed is amazon going to get over me having to return so much stuff from troubleshooting this? Since they aren't even in stock would it be better to try to RMA through AMD?

after installing a new graphics card, heard a pop from the computer and now it wont turn back on

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 03:25 PM PDT

I just installed a new graphics card, rx580, and everything was going fine. I had deleted all my old drivers and installed new ones for the graphics card. I then go to update apex and jump into a game, everything is still fine, until like 5 minutes into the game when I then hear two pops and now my computer wont start. There is still light coming from the ethernet port and the hard drive, and when I looked at the motherboard, nothing looked like it had blown, the new graphics card also still looks fine but the computer won't start.

    CPU - Intel core i5 - 4590

    Motherboard - ASUS B85M-F

    RAM - x2 A-DATA Technology 8 GB DDR3

New GPU - Radeon RX 580 8 GB OC edition

Old GPU - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 2 GB

    Power - Segotep SG-A400HDL 400W

HELP! Got thermal paste next to cpu --> not cleaning off

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 08:34 AM PDT

Hello. I am currently building my new pc.

However, I placed my CPU cooler on upside down and wanted to readjust it. By doing to come thermal paste on the wraith cooler that comes with 3700x got on my motherboard.

I have tried alcohol and q tips to clean it up and the results can be seen in the picture. did I clean enough of it up? It seems to be really thick and is not coming off very well! Am i ok to put my cooler back on and continue? The paste looks to be on some circuitry!

    https://imgur.com/p0jDHrv

Please see the picture and HELP ahh i feel the world is ending. Thank you in advance for your help!

Update: I have continued to try cotton swabs and isotope alcohol and this is how it has improved. Is this good enough? It's come to a standstill and no more is being removed as I keep trying

    https://imgur.com/SWB4MCJ

Okay after using a toothpick and alcohol I called it quits after I got it to look like this. I think this is good enough! Thanks to everyone for your suggestions!

    New PC weird problem.

    Troubleshooting help:

    Parts List:Intel Core i5 -9400 CPU

    ASRock B365M Pro 4 Mobo

    Be Quiet slim CPU cooler

GeIL Evbo Spear 2x8GB DDR4-3000 RAM

    Intel 660p series 512GB SSD

    MSI-GeForce RTX 2060 6GB Gaming Z Video Card

    Coolermaster Q300L Box

    Corsair CXM 450W power supply

    Describe your problem:

I built a PC for my kids. I finished it last night and it was running good. We were playing Minecraft on it last night and this morning. I noticed that only half of the RAM was recognized, 8GB instead of 16GB, so I tried to re-seat the RAM while we were on a break. Now there is nothing coming from the PC. The monitor says that there is no input despite trying 2 different HDMI cables from the GPU and the motherboard. All of the fans, the CPU Cooler and GPU fans are spinning. The power light on the case turns on. The light from the ethernet cable port is blinking. But the keyboard won't light up or work either.

IT WAS THE RAM. I HAD TO REALLY GET IT IN THERE TO SEAT PROPERLY AND NOW IT'S HUMMING AWAY.

PC has stopped working within a week of being built

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 12:45 PM PDT

    Troubleshooting Help:

What is your parts list? Consider formatting your parts list.

    R5 2600

    Gigabyte B450M DS3H Mobo

2x8GB Crucial Ballistix RAM (not sure what speed specifically)

    MSI RX 580 Armor

    EVGA 750 G3 PSU

    Thermaltake Versa H18 Case

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

After being built just around a week ago, the PC I built has stopped functioning, i.e. the case's power LED and the case/CPU fans work(ed), but the lighting on the motherboard is not turning on, the GPU is not working, and there is no video being sent to the monitor.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I've unplugged and plugged the PSU power cables back in, as well as reseating the GPU, which only worked for a day before it stopped functioning again.

I removed the GPU and plugged the HDMI cable into the motherboard, but still no display, so it seems to be a motherboard problem (the motherboard's PCIe connector also seemed to hold the GPU uncomfortably loosely).

I've tried taking out both RAM sticks out and putting them back individually in different slots, but nothing changed.

Even after plugging in the motherboard's included beeper speaker, it didn't give me a single error code when trying to boot the computer.

I tried reseating the 24-pin mobo power cable again, but after that, even the case/CPU fans stopped spinning, leaving the case LED as the only indication that there was any power being sent.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I built this PC for a friend who isn't particularly tech-literate, so he definitely wouldn't have messed with any settings or BIOS functions that would do this to the computer. As far as I know, the only software installed was Windows 10 along with whatever games he had downloaded. I realize now that I didn't think to try reseating the CPU, but considering what seems to be a complete lack of power delivery in the PC aside from the case LED, I'm not sure that would be the problem.

    GPU no longer works..?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 02:48 PM PDT

So I installed a new CPU today, 5 3600, replacing a 1600 but every other component is the same. After installation I can't boot, everything powers on even led on gpu but gpu fans do not spin. VGA Debug LED and GPU LED are only lights that come on. Nothing displays, I get no signal on my monitor regardless of input. I've tried removing motherboard battery to reset cmos, I've tried jumping, everything is plugged in.

Really stuck. Weirdest issue with new 2070 Super.

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 11:01 AM PDT

I can't get this thing to work y'all. I've tried everything.

My friend just upgraded from a 2060 to a 2070 Super (FE), and I can't get it working. At first, I thought it just wasn't playing ball with the 2060 drivers. From startup, it was loading into windows and just before it would show the login screen the screen would go black as if losing input.

Uninstalled the old drivers using DDU, plugged it in and it works in the default low resolution to get into the desktop. I download the 2070 Super drivers and during the driver install, the screen goes black and doesn't recover.

Next, I try a clean installation of Windows. After I install Windows, I shutdown and insert the card. With it now plugged in, I boot in successfully and commence the nvidia driver download. Same thing happens even after a clean windows installation. Screen goes black during driver installation and doesn't recover.

Is it the card? The 2060 (EVGA) worked fine in this machine (4790K build with 750W PSU).

    Gpu Crash

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 02:47 PM PDT

So, I built my first PC two weeks ago. Today i tried oc'ing my gpu, i tried various variations but gave up because I didn't want my temps above 70c. A minute or two later I started watching a youtube video and i got a blue screen (just a plain blue screen) with stuck sound. I turned off my pc and now i'm watching a youtube video without problems. Is it normal that that happened? Did i tire out my gpu? It's a rx 580
