    Simple Questions - August 27, 2019

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 05:13 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Does a Mobo and CPU upgrade require a new windows key?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 08:16 AM PDT

My experience with PC building is new builds with fresh windows installs. For an upgrade like this, would it require a new windows key? I've never upgraded just a Mobo and CPU before. My computer that's getting the upgrade is running Windows 7. I did Google a little bit but was getting conflicting answers.

Built a PC ages ago and am wondering if it is still worth getting a GPU for this PC or just building a new one?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 03:06 PM PDT

Completely out of the loop of what's been going on with all the CPUs, graphics cards etc. For all I know, my PC could be no longer worthwhile to game on (am very doubtful but don't want to spend money on a GPU if that's the case and good to get a second opinion). Here are the specs:

    CPU: i5 4690K

RAM: 8GB (DDR3 if it matters)

    PSU: Corsair RM650(?)

Motherboard: An ASUS ROG motherboard. Can't remember the exact one off the top of my head.

Was wondering if it's still worth getting a GPU on this PC or to get a new one instead. Which GPU's would you also recommend? Ideally a minimum of PS4 graphics which I imagine will be achievably easily with my budget. Ideal budget is sub £200 but may be willing to stretch to 300 if you think it's worth it. Thanks for the help.

Well after ~9 years its time to build a new computer for general every day use and gaming. I'm hoping this rig will be powerful enough to run Cyberpunk 2077 on high settings at 100+ fps when it comes out next year.

Please let me know your thoughts on the build and if there are any improvements that could be made to it. Thank you!

    Looking for 100 hz+ 34" Ultrawide (3440x1440)

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 08:08 AM PDT

Hey guys I'm new to here (and Reddit) but not new to building PC's. I just moved to a new place and built myself a decent quality desk, and now I'm looking to slap some decent monitors on top. There's so many choices and I've been looking for about a week now, so I'm resorting to asking for suggestions and feedback from other ultrawide monitor owners to help narrow down my options

Currently I've got a Dell 22" 16:10 monitor and a Dell 29" ultrawide. These guys have served well and still work just fine, but I'm looking for better resolution and a higher refresh rate now.

What I'm looking for is most importantly: - reliability - 100+ hz refresh rate - 3440x1440 resolution - vesa compatible - Nvidia supported freesync preferably, (for versatility) else gsync - high color accuracy (i.e. no Samsung filter) - anti glare panel

Other nice things to have would be: - thin bezels - config buttons on the front or bottom, NOT on the back) - completely unlocked configuration menu - sleek design (one of the reasons I like dells)

I'm gonna be driving this monitor with an 1800x and a stock 1080.

Hoping to keep the price at max around 700-800. 600s would be better but I heard about issues with dead pixels in the panels that fall in that range. Also, I have the saint David's microcenter near me so I can take advantage of that.

Been at this for a week now and my head is spinning, so any suggestions or anecdotal experience would be greatly appreciated!

P.s. apologies about the feature list not being bullet pointed, can't seem to fix that

CPU using 25 watts at full load?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 04:18 PM PDT

So, according to multiple benchmarks (Prime 95 and Intel's) I am only pulling between 20-30 watts at full load. No clue why.

    CPU - i5 7500

    Motherboard - AsRock b250m Pro4

    GPU - EVGA Gtx 1070

    RAM - 8Gb ddr4 2400

    Storage - 1tb HDD & 120Gb SSD

Feel free to ask questions (chances are you may need more info. than I provided) and thanks in advance for your knowledge!

New Build, Last Mobo Caught Fire

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 04:03 PM PDT

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/mbhs6s

My Gigabyte mobo caught on fire. Spoiler alert, if it's not under warranty - they don't care. Even if it could of burned my house down, doesn't matter.

IN the end... I'm reusing some components. My greatest question: are there any concerns for mixing some of these previous components with what I'm adding.

What is the expected life of a power supply? I bought a good one last time around and was hoping to not have to replace it. However if someone here feels like that would be misguided, I'll re-evaluate.

    Thanks in advance.

Does it need a X570 chipset motherboard or is something like a B450 enough? Is there a benefit with having PCIe 4.0 over 3.0 for the graphics card? I don't really need any fancy expensive features: about 3 fan headers and some USB3 type-A ports, maybe 1 type-C port is good enough. I don't really want to spend more than a $120 on a motherboard.

I'd also like to know if any of the parts in this build have better alternatives.

    I'm not sure about...:

    • ...the RAM speed (do I need a higher frequency than 3200MHz?)
    • ...the CPU Cooler (I'll mildly overclock the CPU it but I still want a quiet system. I don't want to go to expensive though)
    • ...the PSU (is 650W enough for this system, are there better PSUs for the price...)
    • ...the Wifi card (is it a good idea to get an expensive motherboard with builtin wifi, or should I get a standalone PCIe card?)

The PC will be used for gaming at 1440p, 60FPS.
