Is it possible to create a Windows 7 (32-bit) virtual PC on a Windows 7 (64 bit) host machine?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 01:51 PM PDT

Wondering if Virtual PC supports this, or does Virtual PC only support WinXP? I know with newer host OS I can do this in Hyper-V, but trying to see if this specific situation would work. Thanks!

Latest W10 update appears to have killed my multimonitor support

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 07:30 PM PDT

This is a manual crosspost from /r/AMD as I'm reasonably sure it's down to the latest Windows update :

    Hey.

I've lost multimonitor support with twin 7950s. This happened yesterday, possibly as the result of a Windows 10 update (I went out and everything was fine, came back and it had rebooted and was now just the main monitor).

On deleting AMD drivers completely, I get them back, but reappling the current Adrenaline drivers (both suggested and optional versions), I'm back to one screen only.

    Anyone else run into this?

edit - I should add, the two extra monitors are connected via displayport on the secondary card, the prime monitor DVI on the main card. Both cards are recognised by the Radeon drivers.

I have now reinstalled Windows10 completely and never had screens 2 and 3 recognised from clean boot to driver update, hence thinking it's more Windows than AMD.

Word saving frustrations: opens save folder UI instead of saving

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 02:26 AM PDT

This is getting really really frustrating. I am working in a big word document, and I save every 5 minutes (I press the save button or ctrl+s). Most of the times, it just saves as normally. But every now and then, the save folder popup opens. It is so annoying. Why does it open the save folder in the first place? Does anyone else has this problem?

    Custom Windows Install

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 02:38 PM PDT

Would it be possible to make a USB that isntalls windows and some programs automatically? So it remembers my settings and can install the programs I always use. Similar to how some computer manufacturers download some programs by default.

    Windows Services to turn off

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 10:52 AM PDT

    Hi All,

I'd like to turn off (starting manually) all Windows Services that I don't need.

That assumes I must know the meaning of each one.

Is there a web place, a list (KB?), or based on your experience, where I can find more info?

    Thanks

+ Windows 10 (fully updated - last one)

Windows 10 has a Bluetooth Audio Delay even with Bluetooth 5 headphones and laptop: is this normal with Windows?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2019 10:59 PM PDT

I have heard that audio delay is bad with Windows, but it can't be that bad... could it? I mean seriously. I have Galaxy Buds that have Bluetooth 5, and a Samsung Notebook 9 Pro (2019) that has Bluetooth 5. I get it if the headphones are like Bluetooth 4.2 or something, in that case it's normal. But literally every OS ever besides ever (as long as both parties have Bluetooth 5) have zero audio delay. Android, iOS, macOS, Tizen, and probably even Ubuntu. A big reason why I got the 2019 model is because it has Bluetooth 5. So is this normal with Windows? Do you have the same problem as I do?

I'm a YouTube content creator and it's annoying to still have to carry around headphones with the wire to go with it so I can video edit. I even tried doing the Audio Video Sync Test on YouTube, and the delay is most definitely there. The sound comes through at the 2nd yellow line if you watch the video. Other OS's are spot on the 0 mark.

[Win10 Desktop] No audio only in some programs and only on 3.5mm jacks/"Speakers device" (after update?)

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 01:31 PM PDT

Originally posted to r/techsupport and later to /r/pcgamingtechsupport, hoping to get some insight into the potential Windows-internal side here.

Starting this weekend some programs fail to output any sound to my speakers. Primarily observed in Guild Wars 2 running in Windowed mode, also Starcraft 2 running fullscreen and its editor which is again windowed. Others such as firefox, VLC and many installer-free executables such as RPGM-based games still work. All mentioned programs including the now mute ones worked with full audio for about a month since initial installation.

The speakers are plugged into the standard MB "line out" (yes, double-checked and it works for FF+VLC) in the back. The front 3.5mm connector in the PC case is assigned to the same "device" in Windows 10 and headphones plugged in there also do not output any sound from the affected programs.

I also have a wireless headset which I had not used with this Windows installation prior to the issues appearing. Plugged in the wireless dongle, waited for generic driver install (no manual installation or third-party software prompts) and it worked just fine for the affected programs. Unlike the case front jack this appears as a separate "device" in Windows sound UIs though. To any GW2 players reading this: yes I had to switch the active audio device in-game (or set it to Default after enabling the headset in Windows), changing the in-game setting to my speakers does not fix anything.

Now for the "update" part, and where something must have gone wrong: over the weekend I manually installed updated audio drivers ("Realtek_HD_Universal_Drivers_6.0.8765.1" downloaded via MSI Live Update 6) and Windows 10, being the piece of junk that it is, installed its own updates without notifying me. Unfortunately I cannot give a proper timeline unless you can point me to the relevant system logs, I only became aware of the Win10 updates when I went to manually reboot after installing the drivers. The updates listed in the Control Panel for that date are KB4512509, KB4509094, KB4230204 and KB4463318. For some reason older updates aren't listed.

I did not get any BSODs, obvious audio glitches or warning messages. It is still possible any of the background audio services might have crashed at some point as I was not continuously playing audio. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Realtek Audio Drivers today to no avail, unfortunately I do not have access to the installer for the previous version (no idea where MSI LU gets them).

My best guess is that a setting related to "exclusive access" or "gaming HD audio" got corrupted and is not purged by the driver uninstall. Guild Wars 2 has this feature where it automatically mutes itself when you tab out (or lose window focus) so maybe it got caught in the "muted" state and that was saved to the audio "device" settings? Can the still-functioning programs run on some generic Windows audio driver while AAA games require a dedicated library (which could then be missing/corrupt)? Unlike the fairly obvious case of graphics drivers I do not think I'd be able to notice if firefox/VLC output "low-quality" audio as long as it's above mp3 player quality.

Any pointers on what is going on and how to fix it? The Windows troubleshooting only claims "audio enhancements" don't load which does not help and for some reason opens the Control Panel window for Sound despite there being no "enhancements" options. Thanks in advance!

Windows 7 graphics driver not supporting Aero effects?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 01:19 PM PDT

I installed the Intel HD Graphics driver that is compatible with Windows 7 64 Bit via the Intel download site. At first it showed "This computer does not meet the minimum requirements" but I managed to fix that and got the driver to install. But after I restarted and went back to the troubleshooter, it said "Video card driver doesn't support Aero effects." How to fix? Can anyone give me the link to the right driver for Windows 7? If they don't work it might be limited by the manufacturer of my Windows computer.

My Windows Surface Book 1 dies faster than it charges when using the secondary charger? Normal?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2019 09:27 PM PDT

My Surface Book 1 is decent, moved to it from a MacBook. I have 2 issues. Issue 1 is that when I close it, unless it's shut down, it just turns on and sits at the login screen. I have tried telling it to hibernate and sleep when closed, also told it to hibernate and sleep when power button pressed. No matter what I do it just sits at the login screen when closed, when it's in my bag it gets REALLY hot which could be an issue.

Second issue is that when I charge it using the secondary charger, not the dock one, it dies faster than it charges. Is this normal? I don't understand how it is acceptable if it is normal.

Another “Windows Update broke my computer” issue I don’t suppose any tech-minded people can help with...

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 09:17 AM PDT

Turned on my computer today to get some work done after updating. Lo and behold, I can't connect to my WiFi anymore.

Okay, fine. Reinstall drivers. Doesn't work. Reset router. Doesn't work. All the traditional troubleshooting options fail me. Hit google up, find some options there. (FWIW, I'm not overly savvy with the inner workings of Windows and network adapters, but I can google like a pro.)

Find a few options to reset ipv4 and ipv6 in the command prompt. Both bring back "Access is denied" messages, even though I'm running it as Administrator. A bit more googling tells me how to solve the problem for ipv4 via regedit, but I can't solve the ipv6 issue. Don't suppose anyone knows what to suggest?

    A couple asides:

I tried searching for this and could only find people who's issue with ipv6 was either solved with said reset I cannot perform, or they solved the main problem with another method. Apologies if I missed something and this is a super common problem and I've made myself look like an idiot!

Weirdly, a test to see if I can connect to another WiFi network - in this case, my phone hotspot - worked? So it may be an issue with connecting to my particular router. However said phone, along with every other device in my house, is still connecting fine. Either way it's that I need my PC to connect to.

Windows Registry Issue - Outlook 2007/2010

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 12:28 AM PDT

    Hi,

I am currently trying to automate the process of removing Outlook profiles for Outlook versions 2007/2010.

I have it working for Outlook 2013 and above but when it comes to trying to delete the key for the older versions I get errors.

    If I try reg delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\Outlook

I get a syntax errorwithin CMD, which is odd since this is the exact location you get when trying to export the value from regedit.

If I try the following: reg delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\Outlook

I get a confirmation message but after selecting 'yes' it says that the key or value cannot be found

I have also tried to remove it using a VBScript but this was returning an error of 8007000 or something similar, so it didn't appear to be permission based errors.

It is worth noting I have tried this on a Windows 7 and Windows 10 machine with test keys and admin rights and permissions.

Is this due to the location of the key? Is there anyone that knows hows to fix this.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Is it possible to backup/restore INSTALLED PROGRAMS?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2019 11:33 PM PDT

i want to backup some installed programs and restore them exactly after reformat. the reasons for this is that some of the programs were purchased and i've no idea where i kept the info(passwords, keys, serial, etc) and i dont want to re-purchase what i've already purchased.
and also would be nice to restore the free programs to exactly where they were before the reformat.
