Will AC-AP-Lite still work well on a table? Posted: 27 Aug 2019 07:13 PM PDT I need new wifi/router gear and would like to get the standard EdgeRouter X and Unifi AP Lite setup going. I see that most people are mounting these on the ceiling or the walls. I am renting and can't drill holes. This is temporary because I am looking to buy a house by next year, so I'd like to not have to buy gear twice and wondering if the AP will work just as well sitting on a desk the way consumer routers designed to. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
[Noob question] Extending WiFi w/ ethernet port? Posted: 27 Aug 2019 06:49 PM PDT Hey guys, I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to home networking but I'm hoping someone here can help me. I rent the 4th floor of a townhouse and the main router is on floor 1. We have a wifi booster on floor 2 which is okay but not great. I can connect to the WiFi from any area on the 4th floor (bathroom, bedroom, living room, balcony). But the signal goes from okay to poor when I'm not directly above the extender (in my bedroom). Luckily I do have a ethernet port in my living room that I currently have my ps4 connected to. The internet is great there so I'm hoping I can somehow utilize that to "extend" the WiFi? Is there a product that I can plug into the ethernet port that will give off a wireless signal only I can connect to while then having another ethernet port on the device that i can plug the ps4 into? I cant find anything online about a product that can do this but I'm sure someone here has an idea of what I can do. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Escaping college network restrictions Posted: 27 Aug 2019 06:53 AM PDT My college has network restrictions(Cannot access websites, Steam). Even when i use external vpn's steam is not logging me in. Now i have seen many people suggesting to make my home router(800 Km away) as vpn . Then connecting to internet from my home ISP. But i didn't saw any useful articles on it. Can You help me? If there is any better way than this please let me know. [link] [comments] |
Contractor ran Cat6 and RG6 cables but didn't install ethernet ports or coax jacks Posted: 27 Aug 2019 04:53 PM PDT I posted yesterday for advice on routers. Got that under control, now I need help with my internet cables. I asked my contractor if he could install cables for ethernet and coax ports, and he said he would. This is the result. He ran the cables through the walls and cut holes for the ports, but didn't install the ports. That wouldn't be a problem, except my ISP doesn't install ethernet ports (according to their customer service reps) and they charge $50 for each coax jack in addition to the service visit fee (also $50). I don't want to pay my contractor (or my cable company) to do this if I can avoid it, my budget is already running pretty tight. Is this something I can do myself? I've never done any home DIY stuff before but I'm a pretty quick learner. From what I've read, actually installing the ports/jacks seems pretty straight forward, just very time consuming. I'm more concerned about the central box in the attic (see the link above). The contractor said that it would connect all of the cables in the house together. I know the coax cables connect to the entry cable with cable-splitters, but I have no idea how to hook all of the Cat6 cables together to connect with each other. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. If you need more info I might not be able to give it until tomorrow, depending on what you need (haven't moved into the house yet). Also, if there's another place on Reddit or another site that would be better for this let me know. Edit: Thanks for all the help and recommendations. Looks like I've got plenty of work ahead of me. Wiring new house. Are 230VAC lines strong enough to interfere significantly with unshielded cables? Posted: 27 Aug 2019 07:32 PM PDT So because of structural limitations of the building my network wiring will be run through the same channels carrying my electrical cables. I know that AC lines can cause interference with the network signal. I just don't know how much is too much. The house is a multi-storied building and will require extensive network cabling to 10 rooms or so. [link] [comments] |
Access point or wireless router? Does it matter? Posted: 27 Aug 2019 07:31 PM PDT Hi. I have Xfinity internet, and as I set it up myself, I decided to buy a moderately-priced Arris modem/wireless router as it was listed as compatible. I set everything up and it was fine (this was just over three years ago, IIRC). All was well except my WiFi sucked. I had a Comcast tech come out to fix something and he looked at the box and told me that unit had shitty WiFi capabilities. So, I bought a nice TP-Link Archer, which helped quite a bit. I have had to install a range extender, but that's just the reality of my home and the location of the router. Question is, when I logon to the TP-Link Tether app, I can choose between having the router configured as a wireless AP or just as a wireless router (which is how it is currently). I have the Arris modem in bridge mode, so all it's doing is sending a signal through the Cat 6 to the router. Nothing wirelessly. Does it matter how I have the router setup? I mean I guess it's technically an AP, but not really since the modem/router is bridged? Also, other than upgrading the Arris (not really interested), is there anything else I should do to improve my setup? So again: Arris modem/router in bridge > TP Link router configured as router and not AP > Soon to be 2 TP Link REs. TIA for any help or tips! [link] [comments] |
Easiest Router to replace Meraki MX64 for 1gig internet? Posted: 27 Aug 2019 06:53 PM PDT I just upgraded to 1gig from 250. My current Meraki MX64 caps out at 250, so I'm looking to replace it with a router that is extremely simple to use. I've seen the ER-X and the ER-L. Any suggestions? Real networking is beyond my abilities, but Meraki's point-and-click and also their customer service have allowed me to make it through. I don't have any CLI capabilities and I don't understand some of the basic terms needed to navigate this world efficiently. I can google and follow exact directions though. Current setup is ISP > SB8200 Modem > MX64 > MS220-8P A > MS220-8P B+C > MR32/34/42 [link] [comments] |
Adding separate network on top of apartment-provided one Posted: 27 Aug 2019 06:48 PM PDT Recently moved to an apartment with a provided CenturyLink network + WiFi that took seconds to activate. My concern is that I want to use my own SSID & password (from the house we are moving from) in part to simplify the setup of all my IOT devices (iDevices Switches, Sonos, Ring cams). Can I just grab a new router/WiFi, plug it in (there are jacks), and config my own network that way? Any router recommendations? [link] [comments] |
Questions regarding privacy over airport express Posted: 27 Aug 2019 06:45 PM PDT I'm planning on purchasing a last generation apple airport express in order to utilize my family's xfinity hotspot which is available around the city and rebroadcast the signal through my last generation AirPort Extreme. Airport extremes can only join Wi-Fi networks originating from apple devices, direct Ethernet is the exception. However apple airport expresses can join wifi networks originating from non apple routers. I don't have/want an xfinity router. Basically the express becomes the modem and the extreme is the router and they are connected via Ethernet. I'm sure there are better setups, but this will only cost me 30 bucks. Will my isp see multiple devices/MAC addresses or only the airport express? The device limit is 20, but we're already really close. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
In the market for a new router. Posted: 27 Aug 2019 06:21 PM PDT I have a spending limit of say 150 per router. And need 2. My buddy has an s10+ and the new gryphon smart router. He is getting 700+ everywhere in his house. I'm not spending that kind of money on routers. I have an r7000 and ex7000. They are good but max around 300mbps in most places. Right next to the router I have seen 650ish. Anyhow what are you guys using and what speeds are you seeing? I have an s10+, iPhone xs. And 1 gig internet. It's annoying to pay for 1gig and only get a 3rd of the speed. Silly first world problems. I also get garbage reception in my front yard. P.S. I'm only talking about wifi speeds. My PC gets 1gig hard wired. The wrt32xb Sparks my interest. But the reviews are abysmal. The rt-ax92u (ax6100) dual peaks my interest but I won't have network links at the second end. I need at least 2 physical ports on the secondary device. :/ And no website I've found is up to date. Everything seems canned like they have either 2 year old devices (rt-ac66u) or are just "look what's cool" and don't have benchmarks sadly [link] [comments] |
Google OnHub and Router/Modem setup? Posted: 27 Aug 2019 06:09 PM PDT So I recently got a Google OnHub as a present for moving and I realized that a I needed a modem, but I remembered that I had a spare modem/router by Arris in my closet, and was wondering if there was a way to configure it to make it just a modem Router: Google OnHub (TP-Link) Modem/Router: Arris Surfboard (SBG6700-AC) What should I do? Posted: 27 Aug 2019 01:48 PM PDT I have been having intermittent internet drop outs since early June. Nothing major but I am guessing my old Arris modem the cable company gives you for free is the issue. This is because the modem "resets" itself as if you had unplugged it and plugged it back in on its own several times per day. Really odd I've never experienced this. Not sure why it's rebooting itself. My two guesses is the coaxial line going out to the street is weak? Or the modem needs to be replaced. I already am not a huge fan of the modem we have it's an Arris TG1682. It's one of those "all in one" modem boxes that has a crappy built in Wi-Fi and home phone telephone jacks lol The modem is currently in "bridge mode" so I can avoid the built in WiFi and keep it from broadcasting. I use a Linksys Velop Mesh WiFi Network and I'm 90% sure the Mesh WiFi Nodes aren't the cause the modem rebooting itself randomly. It's quite odd started beginning of summer in June before that never had this issue. I'm considering buying a Netgear CM600 or CM700. These modems seem plug n play? Thanks for the suggestions! Attempt to subnet kills wifi connection and internet connection afterwards Posted: 27 Aug 2019 05:27 PM PDT I'm trying to set up a subnet to set up a server. My setup: DSL modem > Ethernet cable > switch that has main pc, ps4, and secondary router. From the secondary router, I have the secondary pc connected. First, it was all ok. Then, the internet connection from wifi of both primary and secondary routers died. Internet connection via ethernet later on died as well on both primary and secondary pc. [link] [comments] |
Canadian Internet Question - New Router from Shaw only has two Ethernet Ports - need more. Posted: 27 Aug 2019 04:50 PM PDT Hello; I need to expand my in-home wired network, and I'm not sure where I'm going wrong. My Shaw Modem only has two ethernet ports; one is connected to an Powerline Network adapter to run upstairs, the other is connected into a switch down here. Everything connected to that switch refuses to connect to the internet even after powercycling the entire network. Is a switch not suitable to dedicate internet to multiple devices (1 computer and 2 Xbox Ones)? Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Wireless Router Access Point doesn't get internet right away Posted: 27 Aug 2019 04:48 PM PDT Hey guys I used an old router (Arris TG1672) as an access point to get wifi into the second floor of my house. The two routers are connected by an ethernet cable. It works but the issue is it takes too long after connecting to the secondary router for me to have internet access, why is that? Edit: Also, I cannot access the secondary router's settings with the new ip I assigned to it. It uses the same IP address as the primary router instead. [link] [comments] |
How do I correctly setup BGW 210 and Archer A7 router? Posted: 27 Aug 2019 04:07 PM PDT I've 300mbps ATT Fiber internet and a BGW 210 router and a TP Link Archer A7 I originally did IP Passthrough but the consensus on instructions for setting it up correctly widely varied. It also took a while for my Pixel 2 XL to initiate downloads / videos / html5video gyfcats of any type (possibly some kind of DNS issue? or limited DHCP pool) Right now my setup is as follows:
also the 2.4GHz radio is restricted to 802.11n and the 5GHz is restricted to 802.11ac
Magically, it seems to do the job well. I'm getting 350 mbps up and down on my desktop BUT 150 mbps up/down on my Phone via Wi-Fi 5 / 802.11ac with clear LoS Any suggestions on how to get the most out of my fiber network or possible problems to anticipate with my setup? [link] [comments] |
Upgrading from a TP link Wireless Router Posted: 27 Aug 2019 04:01 PM PDT Hi folks, I need to replace my TP Link router (N600 dual band, WDR3500) that keeps freezing and requiring a power cycle. Figured I should step up in quality as well. I have a 2 floor + basement home, ~2000 sq ft. I am looking to have at least 4 free copper ports for connecting TV/receiver/console/PC. I'd prefer to just have either built-in WIFI or use a single AP. If an external AP is recommended and takes up a port, then I still need another 4 ports. I would also like a little better coverage, as in the far corners of the house I currently get poor signal strength on 2.4GHz and almost none on 5GHz. Budget ~ $250 Technical skill ~ Low, I mean I have gone into my router and opened ports back in the days of LAN gaming, but I'm not an IT professional or interested in spending hours setting up a network. If I can spend a few bucks more and go from "some major assembly required, best of luck noob" to "plug and play", I would lean in that direction. I have been perusing this sub and seen a few recommendations:
Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Router/Modem for 1000Mb Comcast Plan? Posted: 27 Aug 2019 03:31 PM PDT I'm moving into a new apartment and I'm getting 1000Mb Comcast plan and they offer the Xfi Gateway for 12/m but I don't know if thats better than just buying my own modem/router? Any advice would be great! [link] [comments] |
Multiple powerline network question Posted: 27 Aug 2019 03:17 PM PDT Hi everyone, in my attempt to reduce wifi through the house I have powerline adapters connected to small devices. Since powerline is affected by circuits I was thinking, can i have different powerline networks for each circuit? So floor 1 will be floor1, floor 2 is floor2, etc. In each floor i have a cat6 connected switch, so could I connect the powerline adapters from each floor network to the respective switch? Would that work or would each one interfere with the other networks if I have more than 1 connected to the switches? I figured logically it should work but I've noticed if I connect two to different switches, it disables one of the other powerline networks. So maybe I'm doing something wrong, but wanted to ask, thank you! [link] [comments] |
Verizon fios gateway router possible issue Posted: 27 Aug 2019 02:54 PM PDT Could use some advice or help. I'm having fios installed in my house in a couple weeks and I'm using my own fios gateway router which is what I'm I currently have optimum as my isp. Just back story quickly. I can't stand optimum anymore from the pricing to the WiFi in my home. My area does not provide xfinity or Comcast. Just directv optimum and fios. Anyway issue started recently where if I try to use the 2.4ghz it does not work but shows up on WiFi list. I can only connect to the 5ghz. My WiFi extender does not either now. In my house the 5ghz only goes so far because of where router is. This issue just started recently. So I do not know if this is a router issue or an optimum issue. I can't really call optimum now and say hey this doesn't work. Any help or real advice or opinion would be appreciated. No stupid comments please [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Aug 2019 02:39 PM PDT I got 500/500 pure (not coax to fiber or any of that stuff) freshly installed fiber internet and so far the best I've seen is like 350/350. The worst I've seen is 100/100. However, with cable, we had like 70/5 and I was pretty much always at that speed. Why is this? Should I tell the fiber company? [link] [comments] |
Routing VPN server connections to another VPN client connection in the same pfsense device Posted: 27 Aug 2019 02:38 PM PDT Hi all, I have a VPN server configured on my pfsense device. I also have a VPN Client with PIA and both work nicely. What I would like to do is to route any VPN server connection through my VPN Client connection, in a way that my own VPN server uses the paid VPN client service as the backend and my internal network remains invisible to those connections. Does this technique have a name? Any guide that I could read to implement that? Thanks [link] [comments] |
