This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

I built a pc... and it was great! (details, image and what I learned)

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 02:44 AM PDT

    Guess what! I built a pc!11!111!!11!!

I never understood why I should upgrade from a 'gaming laptop' to a desktop. I mean yeah, monitor and keyboard not being cramped is cool, but I actually did that by just plugging my laptop to a monitor, keyboard and mouse (would recommend if one has those lying around the house, waaay better than the laptop alone).

In the end, there were three reasons why I decided to get a desktop computer:

    1. Astroneer, civ 5, interstellar rift and a few other games didn't play nicely even on low settings, and with other games I had to go to relatively low settings.
    2. I'm going to be honest here; desktop computers are cool. They give bragging rights (among gamers and nerds at least).
    3. This reason came applied after I had already considered getting one, but here it is anyway: I had found a pc on the side of the road that worked, and I already knew that the case, if nothing else, could save 70 aud from the build, allowing me to make a more convincing case for my parents (yes I beg for money).

If one's computer is slow, that's also a good reason to upgrade

Also decided to build it because price and good quality parts. No reason not to, unless one can't spend the time researching and actually building, in which case budget is probably no problem and then neither is quality.

    So... how did it go?

Quite well actually. here's the part list (including cables): https://au.pcpartpicker.com/user/Ateready/saved/#view=x47gJx

In total that adds up to $900 AUD or $605 USD, although that's without the graphics card, storage, case or many externals. The main idea was upgradeability, value but no big compromises.

About the SSD... don't ask. I didn't need it, I overspent, I regret it, but i bought it before I actually knew what ssd to buy. It's $0 and so is the case as I got them before building my pc.

As for most of the build, I regret nothing. The ryzen 5 3600 was a no-brainer, used the box cooler as it is fine and free. r9 290 because my brother gave it to me for my birthday. B450 Tomahawk max for that sweet sweet 32MB bios chip and out-of-the-box compatibility. I got the Bitfenix whisper M as I needed at least 750w and it is a high quality power supply that will last me until I have a well-paying job (it was priced that low as Newegg put it on sale on prime day). I got that ram kit as it is well-priced Micron E-die, second only to Samsung B-die afaik.

As for the speakers and microphone, did I need to spend that much on them? No. But was I getting significantly better quality so I can maybe fulfil my youtube aspirations and actually hear bass? Was I getting much better value and longevity? Yes and yes.

The cables, cable ties and OS don't need explanation.

    Next up: building it!

The building was stressful at the time, but fine in the end. I had a static free workspace by rolling up my carpet and used an ESD bracelet. The cable management was painful, and so was doing it on the floor. don't do the latter if you can avoid it. Removing the 24-pin connector from when I did a test outside the case was painful, so much so that i removed it at the psu where it split in two. It took forever to assemble, but only because I was so unsure and because I was working on the floor. Open my laptop, stick the ssd from there into the PC and... BAM. It worked. I was too tired that night to do anything further than watch youtube. Next day, installed drivers and did the windows license stuff. Everything was fine. It just took time.

And I guess that's it! I could talk about how I got those prices or decided on exactly those parts, but for me it was simply using Ozbargain, staticice, r/bapcsalesaustralia and google.

So what did I take away from this all? Well a few things, and here they go in no particular order:

    1. Don't overspend on one product over another if they both follow the same standard that supports one's use case. One example of this is don't go for the grey cool looking ethernet cable over the blue lumpy one as long as they support the same standard.
    2. Time is money and/or quality. Spend enough time doing research to find the best value item or range of items. Find one at a discount if one can, and if something seems suspicious do more research. One example is SSDs. Had I known there were 1tb m.2 ssds out there that cost less of a bomb but were just as good, I would have gone for it. Unfortunately, I didn't do the research (this was before I actually built my PC or thought about doing it by the way).
    3. Use what you've got or can get for free. Cases, monitors, keyboards, speakers, mice, cables and maybe even power supplies are all examples of items that are needed to build/use a pc, but also get replaced a lot for little reason. Get an old office monitor, keyboard and mouse from a scrapyard or wherever, and cases like mine sell for $5 on craigslist/gumtree or whatever your country's used parts site is.
    4. Building will be fine. Don't make somebody else do it for an extra $100, do it yourself and it'll be all good. There are plenty of good guides to make sure you won't stuff up.

Now that I've built the PC, I also see another clear benefit in addition to the ones i've outlined: I never have to worry about chrome or discord or other background software ever again. My old laptop was an i5 6200u, 940mx and 8gb ram and while it was responsive as my desktop is now, i had to close chrome a lot to save on ram. It is a good habit to get rid of tabs though. I'm looking at YOU, fellow internet user.

And that's all I have to say! Here's the photo link: https://imgur.com/a/hZhQsTU, and a big thank you to all the redditors (r/buildapc and elswhere) out there! I wouldn't have done so well without you guys. I'm out.

the goal is 1080p 60fps med-high settings, in games like shogun 2, gta v, war thunder, so from what I've seen the rx 570 should be a good fit. Just looking for a quick review before he buys. Edit: The gpu and case are just placeholders really for whatever ~$90 rx 570 we can find on Ebay, and whatever cheap case we can find.

    Edit 2: changed mobo

Hey all former console guy. With school right around the corner i thought it would be a good time to put together a pc, something i planned on doing for a few years but never got around to.

Went on hardwareswap where i got most of my things for pretty insane prices. Only things i purchased new were a psu and the 2070 super. Keyboard, Mouse, Mousepad and HDD were gifted to me by a friend. Total build came out to ~$1400 with headphones and mic included

For the monitor i decided i wanted to go ultrawide or die, and ended up picking up a X34 Predator on Ebay for $450 shipped

I didn't originally plan on going full corsair but it ended up happening by luck of the draw so here i am. I do like how easy it is to switch the lighting color though

I sort of knew how to put it together from having watched previous videos and so i ended up winging it, i think i came out ok though cable management could use some work on both the inside and on the desk but for a first build i am quite happy.

Only on board graphics display on Monitor. Tried an old GPU and same issue.

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 12:48 PM PDT

    Windows 10

    Z390 E Gaming Motherboard

    Intel i7-8700

    GTX 970

    -

I tried to turn my computer on yesterday and it didn't work, I wiggled a few things with the PSU and it finally turned on. Worked fine until I moved it while it was on, and it shut off.

I tried to turn it back on and it turned on and off and didn't work. After turning it on and off for a while it finally now starts up, but no display with the GPU, only the Onboard Graphics work.

    1. I tried an old PSU which I am not 100% works and I get the same exact issue.
    2. I tried an old GPU that I again, can't know for a fact that it works, and the same issue.
    3. I tried them in all combos in both PCI slots.
    4. I went into the motherboard and changed it to target the PCI slot.

As of now, the computer works fine but only with onboard graphics.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks for your help!

OC CPU idle 60 degrees, 80 load

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 02:21 PM PDT

I have an i5-7600k which is overclocked to 4.2GHZ, when it's idle it goes up to 55-60 degrees Celsius. When gaming it can go up to 80 degrees after a while.

Is this too high or is there nothing to worry about?

I have a Cooler Master 212 Evo cpu cooler btw.

Edit: I did some changes in the bios to make sure my cpu isn't always using it's max voltage..

I'm also going to look into a better airflow since I'm still using the stock casefans which are probably not good enough!

    Thanks for the help!

Question about series 10 Intel Processors

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 01:54 PM PDT

Hey there. So my current build is an i7 6700K with a Strix 1080ti with 32GB of 3200mhz DDR4 RAM and have my OS installed on a 1TB Samsung 850 EVO SSD.

Anyways, my monitor is an Asus PG348Q and I just recently started noticing a weird static-like crackling noise coming from my monitor every 10-15 minutes or so. After searching online i've seen numerous posts about people experiencing this same issue and their monitors dying out shortly after this started occurring.

So when I purchased the monitor from MicroCenter, I purchased a 3 year 'no questions asked' warranty just in case something like this were to happen. And so i've spoken to them and I just have to bring back my monitor and they'll take it back and that they will give me store credit for the amount that I originally paid for the monitor when I purchased it in late 2016. With this store credit, I was planning on purchasing the Alienware ultrawide 34" 3440x1440 with the native 120hz refresh rate. And with purchasing this, i'll still have roughly $350-$400 left in store credit. So, with this store credit I was planning on upgrading my CPU (and my mobo obviously since the Z170 platform won't work with the new CPU's)

My question is, what do I do? Do I go ahead and purchase the 9900K with a compatible motherboard for it? Or should I wait until the 10 series of Intel processors release? I'd really like your guys opinions on this before I go ahead and purchase anything.

Sapphire Pulse 5700 XT - Consistent crashes when trying to play games

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 07:13 AM PDT

Posted this in r/AMD tech support, but also crossposting here to see if anyone can help.

Yesterday I built a new computer with a Sapphire Pulse 5700 XT, and I'm encountering an issue where my 5700 XT seems to be crashing when I play video games. I have Apex Legends, CS:GO, and The Witcher 3, and the same thing happens in all games. When I start the game, I am usually able to play for 1-2 minutes, but then the game crashes and I get a black screen. It appears that the video card just stops working; its fans cease to spin even though its light is still on and the rest of the computer (mobo & CPU appear to be working. This happens every single time.

I used the Corsair CX750M power supply (750W, Bronze) because I heard the Sapphire Pulse can take a good bit of power, so I'm hoping it's not a power issue. I've read online that others are experiencing similar issues and that it might be driver related.

In r/AMD, People advised me to 1. Revert to PCI-e 3.0 from 4.0 in my BIOS (my Current Bus Settings was showing PCI express 4.0 x16), and 2. to use the 19.7.5 driver instead of the latest 19.8.1 driver. I have tried both methods and neither fixed the issue.

My parts list is here: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/sCw9xG plus a SSD and HDD that I had previously.

Has anyone had a similar issue or know of solutions?

Lian Li pc-o11 dynamic fan configuration question

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 03:19 PM PDT

I'm getting a new system soon including an h100i pro and Lian Li o11 dynamic so I decided to get some HD120 fans to go along with it aswell. I was wondering, would it be ok to have the three HD120s on the side for exhaust, 240mm aio at the top for exhaust and have two fractal design fans from my current build on the bottom for intake? I imagine the HDs look nicer on exhaust than intake but if it's a substantial difference to put them on intake I wouldn't mind doing it.

Have questions regarding a video card

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 02:59 PM PDT

I'm not sure if this is the right subreddit for this, but I bought a refurbished computer about a year ago and it didn't come with a video card. The video card slot is pretty small. So I'm wondering if it can even take one? It's a Dell optiplex 7010. It has great potential to be a gaming computer. Just needs the card!

    • Fractal Design Meshify C Light Tint Tempered Glass

Please give me recommendations with why you recommenced it. I would also like a recommendation on what fans to get and how to have them set up.

    Thanks

    Should I buy Intel i7-8700k or Ryzen 5 3600?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 02:51 PM PDT

I heard that the Ryzen 5 3600 is on par to that of the i7-8700k. Which of these CPU's are better for gaming, streaming, and adobe programs (such as photoshop).

One thing that is making me lean away from AMD is that apparently there is an issue related with their CPU's that cause the rendering device to be lost and crash on games such as Overwatch which I've experience first hand before.

EDIT: 440W (because of 3600x rather than 3600)

I've already bought everything but now I wonder if this PSU is enough...

Getting an SSD in 2019: 850 Evo vs 860 Evo 500GB?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 02:44 PM PDT

I want to get 500GB SSD, and have an option of getting 860 evo or 850 evo. But 850 is 25$ cheaper. What is the difference between the two, and is 860 evo worth additional 25$? What will i lose, if i buy 850 evo?

How to connect to a 144Hz monitor from my laptop? More details below.

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 12:17 PM PDT

Hey all, I play on my laptop and is stuck on 60 Hz (laptop screen is 60 Hz). I want to go for 144 Hz monitors but my laptop only has a HDMI 1.4 port. The monitors I am looking has HDMI 2.0 ports along with Display Port. Will I be able to fully utilize the 144 Hz from the monitor or will I be limited to 120 Hz?

My laptop is ASUS FX504GE and few of the monitors in my radar are LG Ultragear 144Hz , Acer KG241QP 23.6" 1 MS 144Hz.

Will using HDMI to Display Port adapters solve the problem or is there any workaround so that I get 144 Hz?

    Budget Build Help

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 02:24 PM PDT

I need help. I've never built a PC and I desperately need to upgrade my current tower, which is beyond dated and inadequate for much beyond browsing Chrome. I'm looking for recommendations for a budget build, money is tight.

The goal is something that can handle: After Effects and Premiere Pro CC, even if render times are a little on the lengthy side; and, ideally, be able to upgrade any initial GPU in the not too distant future to be able to handle 'current' game titles like PUBG, Fallout 76, and Battlefield at or above 60fps.

I don't think I can reuse any parts from my current PC (a Lenovo H50-55), apart from possibly the hard drive and network adapter. But I'd be happy to be wrong.

Any suggestions and help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
