    Simple Questions - August 15, 2019

    Posted: 15 Aug 2019 05:13 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

For those of you that were looking for a 24in 144hz IPS 1080p monitor it is now on amazon

    Posted: 14 Aug 2019 11:46 PM PDT

    Just built my first PC.

    Posted: 15 Aug 2019 12:43 PM PDT

First off I would like to thank this subreddit for the very helpful ideas. I didn't actually make a lot of posts and questions myself as I scourged through a lot of other user submitted posts and answers instead. Advice regarding all from GPU to PSU has been very appreciated as I built my first machine. I assume some of you guys also are active in other subreddit a such as buildapcforme and even troubleshooting and audio sections of this website which has all been vital for my build. Thanks!

Now for the PC. As I live in Sweden where parts are relatively expensive (usually around +10 - 20% even when looking at shipping options from Amazon de or gb)and the fact that I'm a high school student who's independent (never borrows money from parents etc.) my tower budget was around the us $900 equivalence.

For years I've been very interested in the PC building space, watched all LTT videos from within 2 years ago for curiosity but I myself has only been running on laptops with integrated graphics and 720p res, you can see my last setup in the album linked below.

    https://imgur.com/a/vAdcbVZ

I finally decided to spend my summer salary and build a PC with included peripherals. Here's the specs list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/4CnNJ8

Some of the components look a bit off mainstream recommendations, basically: Vega 56 is dirt cheap here, less than a cheap 1660ti. Got a very nice deal on these models mobo+CPU, hence the 2600x instead of 2600. All cooling is bcs I want a quiet system.

I am still yet to get a keyboard, I'll prob grab a mechanical one with cherry browns as I program as a hobby and do schoolwork aside from just playing games.

Finally I can play Csgo with >50 fps lowest settings 720p and finally I can even play pubg and insurgency sandstorm. Games I've previously only dreamt about while watching YouTube. I'm so excited. I've got to add that 1080p @ 144hz sure looks nice. Thanks Reddit!

Just fried the GPU in my 3 years strong PC

    Posted: 15 Aug 2019 02:48 PM PDT

    What happened

My PC had been going strong for 3 years. Then a few few weeks ago it started randomly losing power and rebooting in the middle of graphically intensive gaming. This could happen randomly between 0 seconds and 2 hours into playing games. If the PC had been on for a long time, or already played games for a while, it would happen sooner rather than later, up to the point it was just instantly shut off when opening a game.

I thought I had identified the problem as the PSU, as I could hear slightly louder coil whine when it was about to crash. So tonight I bought a new, better, 750W PSU to replace the old one. My PC powered up fine and I went to open a game and it instantly crashed. This time though the PC still had power, CPU was still running, but there were no graphics, just a black display. I tried a few more times with varying results, sometimes it would lose power and reboot, other times just kill the display.

Then the last time I tried I started to smell burning, so I think my GPU is fried. I can't see any physical damage, but if I try to turn it on with the GPU in, the fans turn briefly then stop. If I take the GPU out, it attempts to boot up properly, but I can't check as I don't have an old scool VGA cable for the motherboard display connection.

    What should I do?

Has the new PSU fragged my rig? Or was it the GPU all along? Can I get a refund for the GPU? What happens if it's not the GPU, how can I diagnose? I live in the UK, so I think my EU consumer rights are a 5 year warranty on electronics. Has anyone tried returning a fried component like this before?

    TL;DR

PC started randomly losing power and rebooting when playing games. Replaced PSU and crashing continued a few more times. Then smelt burning from GPU and now it won't turn on.

Thanks so much for your help and advice Reddit!

First ever gaming PC build help

    Posted: 15 Aug 2019 01:51 PM PDT

Hey guys I'm planning to build my first ever PC soon that I'll be using for mainly gaming and everyday computing purposes. Ideally I want this PC to be able to run games such as Apex Legends, Rust, GTA V, the new COD at med-high settings with 60+ fps. I'd like to keep the budget below $900-$1000 CAD. Additionally, I can price match any parts cheaper at the MemoryExpress (they'll also beat it by 10%) so this build may be cheaper.

    Here's the build:

First gaming PC Build - Finalizing

    Posted: 15 Aug 2019 01:49 PM PDT

I'm planning to build PC that can runs games at High/Ultra setting, 2K/FHD + 120fps (fps is priority), so this is my first build and my knowledge isn't that great in the pc world so please treat me like someone doesn't know what is the RAM (joking, of course I do =).

    • First of all, I've picked some parts without giving a heavy thoughts about them like CPU, cooler and the fan, just really followed the System Builder

    • As far what I learnt, the Motherboard is the best option I've based on the case form and cpu

    • RAM? I'm kind of lost here with all these merits to be honest

    • For the storage, I've thought about a lot of options but definitely I would like some recommendations and a lot of help here

    • I'm considering another ITX case, the Fractal Design 500 Core

    • I pick it the RTX 2080 Super Turbo since I heard blower type fan is best type cooler for SFF cases, and actually I wanted to pick up the OC version but the tax was too much like 150$ difference (Non-OC 735$/ OC around 890$)

    - I would like double down on the compatibility of the parts

    - Not interested in RGB, I don't mind it if it's the only option

    - I do appreciate some upgrade or downgrade recommendations

    Thank you in advance

    PC Part Picker Estimated Wattage?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2019 01:43 PM PDT

How accurate is this, it has my final build at 394 watts, yet the graphics card recommends a 700 with a minimum of 600(https://www.amd.com/system/files/documents/radeon-rx-5700-series-quick-start-guide-en.pdf). I am not completely set on the build due to some of the driver issues the 5700 seems to be having, so also pondered a 2060 Super in there. Any and all feedback appreciated.

For the people who use unactivated copy of Windows!

    Posted: 15 Aug 2019 12:08 PM PDT

I built my first PC this past January and have had no problems other than a small one. I used an inactivated version of windows because I didnt feel like spending the extra money and didnt feel that it was worth it because my PC is 100% for gaming. I have these cheap speakers i sometimes use for music when im not sitting or watching twitch etc. Ever since i got them they have been very choppy and i was a lazy POS and didnt return them just dealt with it. However, last night i thought of using an old windows key from an old laptop lying around and this morning I noticed my speakers were completely fixed. Has anyone experienced anything like this???? Also I had made sure i had all of my drivers updated previously so I dont think that had to do anything with it.

    i5 4690k + Dark Rock Pro 4 - Where did I go wrong? :(

    Posted: 15 Aug 2019 03:10 PM PDT

    CPU: i5 4690k (upgrading tomorrow to i7 9700k)
    GPU: msi rtx 2070 gaming z 8gb
MOBO: msi z97 gaming 5 (also upgrading to z390 Aorus Pro WiFi)
    PSU: Corsair 850w
RAM: no idea tbh, will get a 16gb kit tomorrow. (open to recommendations)

First off, let me say that i'm only using this PC for gaming. Recently got into Warhammer 2, so I wanted something better than the stock cpu cooler. I just installed the DRP4 last night, and the temps are seriously disappointing.. (60c idle, 80-90 on load) but I know there has to be something wrong. Whether it's the dying CPU, poor TP application, or the mounting of the actual cooler.. I really can't tell.

What I can tell you is when I woke up today, I changed the fan speed in the bios to maximum, just to see what the difference would be. After leaving the PC running for 30 minutes, (with fans on max) getting ready for work, I noticed that the temps changed maybe 1 or 2c hotter/colder. This test was done entirely in bios. Default RPM was auto @300rpm. Maxed out it's around ~1500rpm. And yes, the fans are physically moving.

Now in comparison to most people in this sub, I don't know shit about computers. I simply tried my best to put this rig together.. Reddit has been a lifesaver for me, and I would like to thank anybody in advance for their input/advice. ♥

I just got home, so I can reply to any questions to assist with troubleshooting

Can someone bring me up to speed on SSDs?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2019 09:48 AM PDT

I haven't been keeping up with PC parts for a while, so I'm almost entirely unfamiliar with SSDs.

To be honest, I'm perfectly happy with all the HDDs currently spinning in my machines. I find their speed completely fine and in my 20 years of computer use, I have yet to witness one failing on me.

Usually I wouldn't even be asking this and would still continue to ignore them, but I just realized that the cheapest storage are actually SSDs. While HDDs are cheaper per GB, it's hard to find low enough capacity HDDs which means that the cheapest drives with just enough capacity are SSDs.

I guess it's time to move on, and now I'd like someone to bring me up to speed before ignorance eventually bites me in the ass. Which brands are reliable? Are the most expensive ones simply faster than the cheapest ones, or do they last longer (because I wouldn't pay for more speed but would pay for more life / reliability)? I have never heard of HDDs requiring firmware updates, but apparently some SSDs need updates (via proprietary tools) and that is kinda concerning.

    Thanks for your time!

New Build Won't Post Ryzen 7 2700 and GIGABYTE B450 AORUS Elite

    Posted: 15 Aug 2019 03:16 PM PDT

EDIT: Not quite sure what is going on with the formatting here, sorry.

    Hi,

Wanted to see if anyone can help. My build will not post. Fan's are on for CPU, case, and GPU. I have the MB breadboarded currently with only the CPU and main power from the PSU in. I have replaced the CPU and MB but still no post (so not a CPU or MB problem). The red light goes on the MB which according to the manual is a "CPU not functioning properly". However as noted the CPU was replaced, still nothing, same problem.

    I have tried:

Using a roommates stick of RAM, using all of the different RAM slots, tested the GPU on an old build - works, PSU works on old rig

Is this a possible BIOS issue? I have no idea what is wrong? I have searched far and wide but nothing seems to work. Help please! Thank you!

    Parts list:

    *Ryzen 7 2700, GIGABYTE B450 AORUS Elite, Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (1x16GB) DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz C15 Memory Kit, Samsung 970 EVO 500GB - NVMe PCIe M.2 2280 SSD (MZ-V7E500BW), Corsair CX 500

Help on making nvme my boot drive.

    Posted: 15 Aug 2019 01:35 PM PDT

Hi so I just got an xpg sx8200 and my motherboard is the asus z97-k and I at first attempted to clone my current samsung 850 evo to it but I couldn't due to the sector size difference.

I then tried using installation media to just install windows to it. I removed all my other drives and installed windows to it. But then when it was done it went back to the start of the installation. I attempt to boot it but it just sends me back to bios. The windows install is definitely in there but it isn't booting.

Please help this has been a really frustrating experience for me.

Buzzing sound from PSU after swapping case

    Posted: 15 Aug 2019 02:51 PM PDT

I just changed to a new case recently and there has been a subtle buzzing sound near the PSU area, and it goes through my headphones. So when im playing games, it's very annoying. It's possible that its not the PSU, but that's my best guess. Its much worse if i use the front panel audio port. I dont know if those are related. What should I do?

    $200 X570 questions

    Posted: 15 Aug 2019 02:25 PM PDT

Hi everyone, I have very recently built a 3700X-based PC off of an X570 Aorus Elite that I bought for $200. I have been asked by a friend to build a white and silver themed PC for him. He is also using a 3700X and is going to spend $180-$210 on his motherboard. Now, the board that really caught my eye is the ASRock X570 Steel Legend. I have heard that the Legend doesn't have as good of a VRM (I don't know much about VRMs, I guess a better VRM means better overclocking performance?) as other similarly priced X570 boards like the Elite (which I have) or the ASUS TUF X570. But the Legend has really the best looks out of these $200 boards (matches the color scheme), and my friend is using a $35 air cooler with minor overclocks on the CPU. I have also heard that ASRock motherboards have a confusing BIOS and horrible RGB control software, and that ASUS has the best of both those things. My Gigabyte motherboard wasn't "confusing" at all, even for me (my first time building a PC), although I don't use Gigabyte's RGB software (Have heard that RGB Fusion is bad too). Should I use the Elite or the TUF, or should the Steel Legend be okay for this use case? Thanks for your replies.

What's wrong with this 5-year old build

    Posted: 15 Aug 2019 08:50 AM PDT

Hi guys! First post here, so apologies if I'm not following general subreddit etiquette. I built my first PC for casual gaming almost 5 years ago, but lately it's been having some issues getting even 60 FPS on a game like Fortnite with the lowest settings. I figure it's maybe time to rebuild and/or upgrade, but I'm not quite sure what I'd need to replace, whether because of hardware degrading or something else. I'm guessing some combination of my GPU/CPU but I'd say I'm mostly clueless at this point.

Here's the link to my build on pcpartpicker (I don't think peripherals matter much but are included just in case): https://pcpartpicker.com/list/pXzpdX

PC not displaying on LG 4k TV via HDMI

    Posted: 15 Aug 2019 03:38 PM PDT

    Hey all,

This problem has been doing my head in - previously I could extend/mirror my desktop to my 4k LG TV with a HDMI cable but for some reason it's stopped working.

I've tried every suggestion I've found online - be it switching to mirroring th display, changing resolution, reversing the HDMI plugs between the TV and my GPU - as well as the obvious things like switching HDMI ports and making sure I had the latest graphics drivers all to no avail.

The maddening thing is everything seems fine on the PC - it sees the TV is connected and the display exists but simply isn't showing up on my TV. And to confuse matters more when I restart my PC the BIOS shows up on my 4k TV before returning to 'No Signal' when it starts to boot up Windows. I tried making the TV the primary display and disconnecting the monitor to no avail.

I haven't a clue what's changed in the last two months or so since I used this same HDMI cable with the same TV without issue and I was desperately hoping someone here had previously ran into a similar issue?

My GPU is a 980 ti, for what it's worth.

I'm building my first PC but i'm relative new and inexperienced in that kinda stuff, can someone please look over my build?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2019 03:37 PM PDT

Hey, so as the post title already says im currently trying to upgrade from my old pc to a new one so i tried to build one, but im really inexperienced. Pcpartpicker helped quite a bit with the compatibility filter stuff, but it doesn't quite check it all. Idk what else to look after, so i would really appreciate it if someone could look over my build and tell me if anything doesn't fit together or even if you have a recommendation for a better pc part.

    R7 3700x or R5 3600 for gtx 1060? I'll explain...

    Posted: 15 Aug 2019 03:34 PM PDT

So I've come up with a heftier than I thought budget for an upgrade for my cpu. (I'm not upgrading my gpu yet, I do pretty light gaming), But would it make a difference if I bought a r7 3700x or a r5 3600 when it comes to fps, or would it just be a waste of money to buy a r7 3700x?

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask! Thanks!
