Get Your Parts Before the US Tariffs Posted: 11 Aug 2019 06:48 AM PDT Heads up from a guy who still talks to his ex coworkers at Microcenter. Pick up any electronics before September as the tariffs kick in. Some places may already have hiked up the prices in anticipation. In particular PSUs have seen jumps. Edit: Tariffs are inherently political. r/buildapc is not. Lets keep it that way. Edit 2: Thanks to u/tigertron62 for OutletPC's article: https://www.outletpc.com/section-301-trump-tariffs.html Edit of edits: The OutletPC was for a previous round of tariffs. No official word yet from anybody about the September 2019 tariffs. As for people who are saying that the tariffs have been in place for a while, this is another round of new tariffs: https://www.cnbc.com/2019/08/01/trump-says-us-will-impose-10percent-tariffs-on-300-billion-of-chinese-goods-starting-september-1.html Edit 3: It's pretty long, but I decided to quickly look over the proposed List 4: https://www.strtrade.com/assets/htmldocuments/USTR%20301%20Proposed%20List%204.pdf Here is a non-exhaustive pastebin of the affect items that weren't covered by List 3, mostly electrical quartz and metals: https://pastebin.com/hPJhyFsQ Lots of PC parts have overlapped tariffed material from List 3 and List 4. From Console to PC, I suck at FPS games Posted: 10 Aug 2019 06:52 PM PDT Hi so I just switched from console to a PC I built for about $1300. Mouse and keyboard always enticed me ever since league of legends. Problem is I'm having doubts as I have played FPS games my whole life and I suck with Mouse and Keyboard and on console I'd always carry games. I'm just wondering if the switch was worth it, I love the difference with 144 fps in a lot of games like apex. I played a game on my One S recently and it was crazy noticing the difference. I want to switch I just hate that I suck at games it's like I went from top dog to noob. I've plugged in a controller on Apex and I'm way better at the game but I want to use Mouse and Keyboard. I've always heard Mouse and keyboard is better but I'm not having luck. I guess I may just be looking for some motivation that eventually I will pick it up. I tried posting in r/pcgaming but it was removed for breaking rules I guess so I didn't know where else to ask this. Thanks for reading. Edit 1: Wow thanks for all the input, So to add some things I've mostly been playing Apex, my sensitivity is at 4.0, and my DPI is 400. Been slowly lowering it I want to go to 3.0 sensitivity. I have a massive mouse pad with a Logitech G305 mouse and a G613 keyboard. I have to use the full range of my pad area and I do about a 270 degree turn in Apex.I guess I'm not a total beginner because I've played league of legends for about 4 years as an adc so all that kiting helped out. I just downloaded Kovaak's and I'm gonna check it out tommorrow. I also play a little bit of Osu. I'm gonna practice using my forearm and elbow and put the controller away for a while. All in all practice, practice practice These replies make me excited and motivated to play! Edit 2: Alright so I think I'm gonna narrow down my practicing to CS:GO deathmatch, Rainbow 6: T-hunt, and Kovaak's, I feel like that's a solid way to improve. I'm gonna just play Osu for fun as most people are saying the 2D environment is way different from a 3D environment. Also for those asking for what mousepad I use its 35" by 15" https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DFFFNWL/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. Thank you everyone! New country, new pc - introducing the Ariel III Posted: 11 Aug 2019 09:26 AM PDT Hi folks, First time poster here, but been building pc's since I got sick of Alienware back in college. This will be my 5th 'full' build (hard to keep track when some parts migrate from build to build, you know). But it's my first hard-tubing build. Anyways, without further ado, I'll lead with the finished product... The Ariel III (https://i.imgur.com/4V57f4l.jpg) Specs CPU: i9 9900k GPU: 2080ti - aorus xtreme edition RAM: 32gb - corsair vengeance pro - 3600-cas18 Storage:
Cooling: Case: Inwin 909 EK PE 360 rad w/ 3x 120 corsair LL RGB fans HWL Nemesis 280 xflow rad w/ 2x 140 corsair LL RGB fans Intake fans: 2x silent wings 3 EK PETG 10/12 tubing, hdc fittings, and angle fittings Primochill CTR phase II reservoir -> literally the only reservoir/d5 pump combo that will fit in the top compartment of the Inwin 909... Fluid: Mayhems X1 UV Blue A few notes: I know it's an overkill build, specs wise. I'm fundamentally a rpg gamer / software dev professional with an unhealthy expectation for how fast my computers need to be. Monitors: I game on a 3560/1440p 144hz main screen. Have a 2nd ultrawide 1440p above it and a 3rd 1440p 28" in portrait to the left side, for work. #youCanNeverHaveEnoughScreens The case: To be frankly honest, the inwin 909 is the prettiest case I've seen in a while. That's why my wife approved it to go in the living room of our last flat. But it's awful to work with. Especially if water cooling, and what percentage is not watercooling a 400$+ case... I largely consider this to be the 'best i could do' build given this case, and while I still think that turned out quite good, there are so many pain points I don't even know where to get started. PM me if you want more details on this. The parts decisions: I know I'm posting a 9900k build a bit late to the party. This all started back in March/April, but we made a move from London to Austria quite suddenly in May. So I was torn between - buy the 9900k and have a chance to build early and have your new PC, or wait. Unfortunately, I got the bitter end of both. I've had the parts for this build sitting in a closet since May. Prioritizing getting the rest of the new house assembled and nice for my wife and the new cats, and have thus only this past week been able to finish my build. But the core goals for this build remain the same:
I've been team blue and green for so long, that the 9900k 2080ti combo seemed obvious (also see the timeline comments above), rest of this was just optimizing within that group. Hardline Time Overall, I had a blast bending. The first 4 hours were awful. I easily spent 2 of the first 4 hours saying "this isn't worth it, what was I thinking, soft tubes so much better, mek mek mek..." But after day 1, I got the hang of it, and in the end it looks so much better. Temps I know somebody's gonna ask so: CPU:
GPU:
They're kinda crap, I'm not happy. I know the radiators aren't in an optimal placement, the front one is probably only about 50% effective given the airflow. But I think the temp issues are mainly block seating / thermal paste jobs. I had the cpu and gpu fitted a while before I got to actually run them, I'm wondering if they dried up a bit or hardened or whatever... But on the other hand... it's been 3 months, I've finally got the damn thing running, and I'm not about to tear it down just to redo the paste until the parts meet a game they can't handle. And they're so overkill that should give me some time to breathe. Anyways... that was probably an overly long post for a first timer, so apologies for the length. A longer set of build images can be found here: https://imgur.com/gallery/yMZNuhV And lastly a little cat tax (I'm more of an imgur regular, so maybe that's a thing, and he's at least a little responsible for the tardiness of this build): meet sherlock (https://i.imgur.com/Ze5AkaR.jpg) [link] [comments]
Building surprise PC for husband's birthday, would love some build ideas/sanity check. Posted: 11 Aug 2019 02:17 PM PDT Hey, So my husband's birthday is coming up on the 28th and he has been talking about getting a new gaming PC foreveeerrrr. I thought this would be an awesome opportunity to build one and surprise him with it. The last one I built for him was back in 2014 I think and he's due for another one. Just wanted to bounce some ideas off of you first. He is dead set on Intel so I suppose let's stick with that. This should definitely play AAA titles on high/ultra and I'm thinking of aiming for 1440p for him (thoughts?) he could really use a new monitor too but let's not include that in the price because I'll add that later. So here is what I'm thinking for some of the main specs:
The rest of the specs here: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/kp6fJ8 What do you think? Budget is $1300 (as you can see I've exceeded that just a bit) and I don't want to go much higher. Can I trim down anything and still keep the performance the same? He won't hear anything AMD related after a bad experience (he's stubborn) so that's out. Otherwise I'm open to switching any of that stuff around. Can I get away with a 2070 or 2070 Super instead? Thanks a lot! A moth got into my keyboard and now there are issues with the keyboard, is it beyond fixing? Posted: 11 Aug 2019 05:31 AM PDT I've had a Corsair Strafe RGB for a little over 2 years now and until yesterday have had no issues. I woke up and while my keyboard lit up, no keys were registering. I disassembled it and it turns out a moth somehow how inside the keyboard and lodged itself between the switches and the pcb. I did my best to remove as much of it as possible with compressed air, and it turned on after being reassembled. All the keys input correctly apart from 1, Q, and A. These input all keys from their respective rows when pressed. Is it time to just save up for a new keyboard? Which of the below options is the best M.2 SSD? Posted: 11 Aug 2019 02:42 PM PDT All of these SSD's are about the same price and I want to know what one will be the best for the price. RX 5700 XT or GTX 1080Ti for 4k gaming? Posted: 11 Aug 2019 05:57 AM PDT I'm looking forward to game on 4k on older titels. The RX 5700 XT is 450euros but the 1080Ti goes for 300euros. What card would perform better? [link] [comments]
Which motherboard for a Ryzen 5 2600 build (work only, 99% chance it will never be used for gaming) Posted: 11 Aug 2019 09:42 AM PDT This is purely for light office work so I'm trying to go as cheap as possible. The only reason I'm going with such a relatively good CPU is because it will be my backup temporary gaming machine if I ever have any issues with my current rig. Since this will never act as more than a temporary gaming machine (if ever) I think the 2600 is in that sweet spot of price vs performance. Also I want to save on postage so this is the only store I'm interested in buying from. Thoughts? Would any of those cheaper ~$110 boards cut the mustard? Or should I really avoid the lower end b450 boards? I'm hoping this one isn't too bad, the price is right for what I'm after: https://www.mwave.com.au/product/gigabyte-b450m-s2h-am4-matx-motherboard-ac21029 [link] [comments]

Any recommendations before I purchase Posted: 11 Aug 2019 02:14 PM PDT I'm looking to upgrade from my four year old machine. I have a two screen setup with an ASUS PB278Q and an Alienware AW3418DW at 120hz. My main use case is gaming (95% use) with a little bit of productivity work and web browsing. I'm looking to hit 120 fps on the Alienware for newer titles. I plan on reusing the SSDs from my existing desktop (probably nothing else), and my budget is flexible. I'm also looking for desktop case recommendations with priority on noise, thermals, and aesthetics in that order. Thanks!

75hz or 144hz freesync monitor? Posted: 11 Aug 2019 03:45 PM PDT I'm upgrading from a standard 1080p tv. The Acer SB230 is 75hz with an ips display for just $100, which sounds like a nice upgrade to me. Is 75hz noticeable enough over 60hz to be worth it, or should I go for a 144hz monitor? most of the ones I've seen are about $100 more, and don't have ips panels. I was also wondering if it's worth it to get a monitor that's gsync compatible. Any suggestions for a good monitor would be appreciated as well. Edit: i don't play many competitive shooters or anything, using it mostly for new singleplayer games and some older/less intensive games, and i have a gtx 1060 + i5 6500 [link] [comments]
My no limts Ryzen build and strategy Posted: 11 Aug 2019 11:36 AM PDT Originally I posted this on the GamingOnLinux forums, but it might be usefull for some. The time has come for my current setup to be replaced with something new. I have spent a few days analyzing what's available, discussing with friends, and reading reviews to come up with the new build. I wanted to share with you what I'm planning to buy, perhaps some of the info will be useful to you or an inspiration for something better. Note that I have the following constraints:
I would probably go AMD all the way, but I don't think changing mu current GPU would be wise. Besides who knows, maybe nVidia will truly reform by the time a GPU upgrade will be necessary? Also worth noting is my use cases - I like to game on my PC, but also do some programming. I'm planning to look into VR whenever that will mature a bit (especially on Linux). I don't have nor plan to have a Windows install, but I'm open to using Proton. I also want to future proof a bit. My current PC has served my well for about 7 years. I did double the RAM from 4 to 8 and replaced my HDD with a SSD, but all the other core components managed to stay comfortably usable. I want this next build to be like that as well. With all that out of the way, lets start with the new build. CPUConsidering I already have the GPU as mentioned above, figuring out which CPU to go with is the first step, as that will also impact what motherboard will be selected and that impacts further things. Until very recently I would probably go with Intel for the CPU, but (as you might have guessed from the title) the new Ryzen series is incredible, both from a performance perspective and a cost-effectiveness one. I have selected Ryzen 9 3900X which is a 12 core (24 thread) unit, with the clock set at 3.8 - 4.6 . If I was not interested in developing software on this PC and gaming would by my only goal, or my budget was limited I would probably go with the Ryzen 7 instead. But I like to have more cores available; the bigger L3 cache is also a nice bonus. For some one in need of even more multi-threaded performance there is the Ryzen 9 3950X which has 16 cores, but the base clock drops to 3.5. But who knows, since Linus is planning to buy that one, perhaps the better option is to have the same CPU as the man himself. I'm sure the Kernel will always work flawlessly on it ;) MotherboardWith the CPU selected, the next question to ask yourself is - which chipset you want. For the Zen 2 architecture (our CPU) I was considering x470 and the new x570. Main difference between them is that x570 can support PCIe 4.0 for peripherals, for example a MVNe SSD. Additionally, more USB 3.1 Gen2 ports are available and we can put faster RAM. If none of those seem important to you I would suggest to stick with x470 - especially if power consumption is something you care about. The x470 has a significantly lower TDP and doesn't require active cooling like the x570. For my build I went with the x570 chipset. Next, there is a whole list of thing you should decide on, and will help with narrowing down which model to choose from. For me, I came up with the following:
After taking all of that into consideration and consulting this helpful and massive google doc, I selected Gigabyte X570 I AORUS PRO WIFI. It seems to fit all of my criteria and doesn't include too much of stuff I don't need. The reviews I saw were also positive. When selecting your motherboard, I suggest consulting some reviews first, since the design decisions made by the manufacturers are very nuanced and might be not obvious just from reading the spec sheet. RAMFirst, consider how much RAM do you need. I think 16GB is the minimum to be somewhat future proof. In my case I want with 32GB. Since my selected motherboard has 2 slots available I want 2 x 16GB sticks. Even if the board had 4 slots, I would still go with 2x16 instead of 4x8. This way it's actually cheaper, you have room for expansion, and I found that the quality of offered sticks is better in this configuration. Next, go to your preferred PC parts store, select DDR4 (the type supported by our configuration), filter out all items with lower clock speed then the max supported by your motherboard (3200 MHz) and then select the one that has the lowest CL. If it doesn't have LEDs installed, then even better. In my case it happened to be G.SKILL Trident Z DDR4 2x16GB 3200MHz CL14-14-14 XMP2 Black. SSDStorage requirements vary greatly from person to person, so lets focus on speed instead. Since both our CPU and motherboard chipset support PCIe 4.0 for SSDs it would be a shame not buy one. This is probably the most overkill part of the build, and the biggest cost savings opportunity. I could probably re-use my current 500GB SSD that uses SATA3. But let's treat ourselves - I want the highest speed. That means a NVMe SSD using our M2 motherboard slot which will use the PCI 4.0 interface. My pick was the Gigabyte AORUS M.2 Gen4 PCIe X4 NVMe 1TB. If you want less storage space, be mindful that some disks offer slower speeds for lower capacity models. PSUHonestly, didn't care too much. As long as it has enough power, and good ratings it's fine. I'm open to suggestions on this one, currently looking at be quiet! Pure Power 11 600W CM. CaseSame as with the power supply, don't care too much. I don't want edgy gamer aesthetics, nor light my room with colors of the rainbow. It should have the ports I want easily available. It should let the air flow correctly. If it has neat tricks that help with the final assembly of the build - sure, why not. Open to suggestions on this one as well, currently considering Corsair Obsidian 500D CC-9011116-WW. EDIT: It seems I completely missed the fact, that my selected motherboard is mITX, so smaller than the usual ATX. So I could very well go for a smaller case, unless I find a reason why this size is not a good fit for me. That's it! Like I mentioned earlier, I have all other necessary parts. I will probably not purchase a separate cooler for the CPU - I would probably do that straight away for an Intel CPU or an older AMD, but I hear good things about the bundled ones in this generation. If I will find this to be not true once I play with this new PC for a while, it's relatively easy to order one and install later. So this turned out to be a wall of text - I hope someone will find this useful. I will be ordering my stuff this month, so I can still change something; I would love to hear your input. Especially if something I want to buy is know to have issues with Linux - that would be a dealbraker. Posted: 11 Aug 2019 03:09 PM PDT Hi Everyone, I'm building a new setup which I'll use for mainly development work, photo editing (Adobe Lightroom) and maybe casual gaming. I've chosen the 9600K as my CPU as I think the 9700k will be an overkill. Not only that, the Cooler Master Hyper 212 black edition cooler that I ordered probably won't be good enough to cool the 9700k. Plus it's a lot more expensive.! You can see the build here: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/Fearless_Forest/saved/#view=4FPcqs BUT now I have a problem. The Ryzen 3600 has caught my eyes and I can't help think that maybe I should ditch Intel and go AMD. Specifically the Ryzen 3600. Has anyone made the switch from 9600k to 3600 here and and can comment on the positives/negatives? Is it worth the hassle? Cheers. What if that had happened to my school laptop or worse, my recently built desktop (Thanks to this sub for the help btw). Why is my 3900x running so hot and can't get passed 6k on Cinebench20. Is the DRP4 not good? Posted: 11 Aug 2019 02:49 PM PDT I'm running a 3900x + Asus X570 Pro Mobo and the DRP4 cooler. I'm not sure why I'm idling at 50C out of nowhere as I've seen it idling at 38C before https://i.imgur.com/wnneXCQ.png There's a screenshot of my HWMonitor. I'm getting really close to 1.5V as well it seems which is pretty scary to me. When I run cinebench20 I also just barely get 6k score on multi core test. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Do I need 144hz monitor for my build? Posted: 11 Aug 2019 04:27 PM PDT Hello, I'm in the process of building a pc with 3800x + 2080 Super. The initial idea was to get a 1080p 144hz monitor. However, I believe I won't hit that many fps when playing on ultra in most demanding games today and in the future. Should I still get a 144hz monitor with g-sync in this case? Posted: 11 Aug 2019 02:15 PM PDT I have a new ASUS ROG Strix B450-i Gaming motherboard. I am planning to drop in a Ryzen 5 3600 CPU. Before doing so I need to update the motherboard BIOS. I do not have access to an older Ryzen cpu. From reading the manual and searching online, I feel like I should be able to access the BIOS without a cpu although finding this exact answer has been very frustrating. Right now I have the motherboard connected to the psu, ethernet, monitor, stand-alone power switch, and keyboard. The RGBs on the motherboard are all on indicating power. I thought that if I hit power I could get to the BIOS but I am not able to get anything to happen. Looking for any help on how to get to BIOS without a cpu! :( [link] [comments]
Posted: 11 Aug 2019 04:25 PM PDT Earlier this year I built a pc and used my old gtx 1050 2gb as my video card since I had used it in my last dell prebuilt. Now I'm looking to upgrade to the MSI GTX 1660 Ti gaming 6gb which has rgb. I have the asrock b450m pro4 mobo and was wondering if I could control the rgb on it since it doesn't say my mobo has rgb support, but also doesn't say that it doesn't support it. Thanks. Running 4k USBC monitor with a DP eGPU Posted: 11 Aug 2019 04:23 PM PDT So I have the lg 4k UltraFine monitor, for my 2019 MBP as well as a gigabyte rx480 eGPU. The output on the eGPU is display port or HDMI. I may be dumb but I ordered a TB3 to DP cable after reading they push each other's protocols. But no sauce. The DP (from the eGPU) won't seem to power the TB3 monitor. Am I missing something? I can run a HDMI monitor fine using the HDMI output…. Which GPU will work well with i5 2320 ? Posted: 11 Aug 2019 02:01 PM PDT I got myself a 3700X and 32GB Ram and RTX 2080 and my friend upgraded the same time to a 3600 + 16GB Ram and GTX 1060 ... Now he wants to give me his previous i5 2320 + 16GB of DDR3 and ASROCK Mobo so I can build my 13 years old sister PC to play fortnite and do homework and stuff like that ...I am going to use my old PSU Seasonic G-650 and Samsung 850 Pro 512GB SSD on that system, so now only GPU is needed ... I am going to get a used cheap either RX 570/580 or GTX 1060/1050 Ti, what do you think ? Which will not be bottlenecked by the CPU ? [link] [comments] |
