    Simple Questions - August 10, 2019

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 05:12 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

    Remember that peripherals exist, too.

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 10:43 PM PDT

One of the biggest issues I have with pcpartpicker's build lists and some people asking for (and giving) advice here is that peripherals are sometimes completely disregarded.

Don't get me wrong, they can be found on the cheap. You can get a decent monitor for $100, and K + M and speakers for $30 combined. But even that $130 price tag is a quarter of the price of a $500 budget build that doesn't include these parts. A $500 tower will be reduced to well under $400.

If you're building something with a big budget in mind, this is even more important. My tower is not anything fancy, but I have expensive peripherals, the cost of which approaches my tower itself. If you want a $1,000 tower, great, it's gonna be sick. Don't forget about the $300+ monitor you probably want, as well as an additional $200+ for nice peripherals. More than 50% the cost of the tower has just been tacked on just so you can use it.

If you have an expensive tower with cheap peripherals, great, nothing wrong with that either. New builders just always need to keep it in the back of their mind that a tower is not a complete build. You can't use it without a monitor, keyboard and mouse, and that's not even with sound.

Make sure to plan your budget accordingly because you can go way over very quickly by not planning for what sort of peripherals you plan on buying.

(Note that this makes the assumption that you buy everything new, which is more ideal for peripherals that components.)

Thank you for helping a dad build a PC

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 01:59 PM PDT

Hey guys, Just came here to tell you my PC building was successful. I was really afraid because I bought all the parts (besides the case) on another country (USA) and after a 12 hour plane trip, 4 hours by bus, and assembling it with my case, I finally made it.

I did not have lots of money, but was able (between buying diapers and clothes) to save some money to buy a better PC. Before this, I had a i5-4440 with 8GB ram and a GTX 660, so quite an improvement.

It is not perfect, I don't know how to do a better cable management on the front (I need the coolers connected to the motherboard to sync the RGB). Another issue I found and was not able to solve was how to use my support bracket from MSI, I believe it is because I lost a piece of rubber with glue that came on top of it, and I can't make it stick to the GPU, so I am considering how to fix that.

Here is my part list: PCPartPicker Part List

Help on building a future proof builds for my husband and I as a possible final upgrade. $2,500 each rough limit

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 08:15 AM PDT

We bought our old builds in summer of 2015, so it's been about 4 years. We're in the market for kids in the future, so this would be our last upgrade for a while, I'm guessing. I've always wanted to go big, so this is my only chance! Money is practically no object I think

    Some things influencing our picks:

    • We each have a ultrawide 3440x1440p, 100hz monitor, free-sync. Samsung CF791. From what I read this may not be one of the freesync monitors that nvidia cards will support for freesync. But it drives our GPU selection

    • We typically play FFXIV as our main game, but we also dabble in VR and look forward to playing more graphically intense games like Cyberpunk and (modded and bug-fixed) Elder Scrolls 6 in the future. FFXIV influences our CPU and GPU selection (more-so GPU, i dont' mind lower frames when a million players are gathered in a city).

    • May not need to overclock anything for FFXIV, but would like to be setup to do so that this hardware can grow to fit the demands of games releasing in the future. Not sure if our PSU fits the timeline/overclocking needs

    • We're comfortable with aircooling or AIO, but not custom loops. Was thinking about AIO GPU for overclocking in the future.

    • My husband would prefer we have the same CPU, motherboard, and GPU for the sake of ease in troubleshooting. His computer was different in most ways than mine and had many more problems I wasn't experiencing.

    • He wants a new case, but I'm fine to continue using my existing Phanteks p400s. He wants to go RGB, and I'm fine with a dim look.

    • I half-want to be convinced that the 9900k isn't needed for the games we have in mind vs a 3700x or something, and the 2080 TI could be a 2080 or radeon 5700. But I really want FFXIV to reach 100fps at (edit 3440x1440p) at higher-than-min settings (I get 52fps in a small room right now at min settings at this resolution). and CPU i know matters for MMOs to an extent.

With that said, here's our part list. It's his actually (subtract the case price for my list) PCPartPicker Part List

    i5 4460 upgrade paths

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 02:47 PM PDT

Im interest in upgrading my old 4460 to something a bit better. My current system is a 1070ti, 8gb ram and the 4460. I want to know if its a better value proposition to go with a i7 4790 (non k since mobo does not support overclocking) or to switch over to a newer mobo with something like a ryzen 3200g. For more info if I ever upgrade again I plan to scrap the whole build and start over (college student so will think of upgrading once graduated and have a larger budget) so long term support of the socket is less useful to me (not completely irrelevant but less valuable). Thanks in advance for any comments.

    Splitters for case fans

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 01:16 PM PDT

I'm planning to buy 2 Corsair LL140s as front intake fans for my Meshify C and use the 2 stock fans for rear and top exhaust. I was wondering if I need to buy a splitter in order to utilize them all? I already bought a X570 Aorus Pro WiFi, but I'm not sure how exactly to check.

No signal with Ram in certain slots

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 03:36 PM PDT

So I have 2x8Gb sticks that I bought together and I'm trying to get them to dual channel.

But for some reason it always just says no signal on my monitor, the only combo I got to work was slots 3 and 4, I got a signal there. When I put them into other slots it says no signal but the ram still lights up so that's why I'm confused.

Just need a little guidance choosing ram.

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 12:37 PM PDT

Building my first pc on a budget. I'm looking at the Ryzen 3200g and I know that ram is important for this Apu. What speed and amount do you guys recommend? I would prefer to buy only 8gb(2x4) of ram because it's cheaper but i don't know if it is enough for optimal performance. Also thought I could maybe get a bit slower ram but then overclock it I don't know.

News re: MSI Max boards in the states

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 08:49 AM PDT

Unless I missed something, haven't found any news about when MSI will get MAX mobos out. I've found some are available in UK, and some results for the list of which boards MSI is releasing as Max, but nothing about when we can buy them here.

Guess I'm stuck buying a current mobo and dealing w/the bios in a year or when I upgrade the cpu. Oh well.

    Anyone have better information?

My friend just bricked my computer

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 02:06 PM PDT

My other friend is coming over tomorrow morning to try to fix it. What happened was...

Got a new monitor, graphics card, and ssd. My friend came over and switched out the graphics card, hooked up the monitor and now it was time to do the ssd. He wanted to put my windows on the ssd so my computer boots faster.

He first tried using EASEUS. I kept watching him try to "take from HDD -> SSD" but it kept saying that it didn't have enough room, yet it showed "SSD 250~ gb remaining". He then changed a bunch of partitions (i don't even know what they are) and tried changing a bunch of settings over the next 10 minutes and it kept giving him the same message.

I am not sure when, but some time during his quest to do this, he wiped my hard drive (I gave him permission idc). Still wouldn't work. Now, he tried using my sisters surface pro 3 to clone her windows onto it or whatever then put it on mine using the SSD. It did not work. He then tried to download a fresh windows 10 onto the ssd and put it on my computer. It did not work.

My computer will now not boot up passed BIOS and is only giving me one option under what to boot

Has anyone ever experienced something like that? Or have any idea what the problem might be? I mean, I'm sure the problem is that my computer doesn't have windows or whatever, but if that's the case, wouldn't we just be able to put windows on as if it was a brand new build? I don't know

Thank you for reading and thank you for the help

[troubleshooting] Replaced CPU cooler, system doesn't power on

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 01:57 PM PDT

I have a build I've been using successfully for a couple of months. Ryzen 2600X on an ASRock X470 Taichi motherboard. [Edit: PSU is an Antec 620M.] I had a Noctua cooler from my previous build, but put together my new build using the included Wraith while waiting for Noctua to send me an AM4 bracket. (Which they did within a couple of days but I've been lazy about doing the swap.)

Anyway, today I went ahead and swapped the Wraith for my Noctua. I was careful to get my CPU heated up a bit (~50F) via software load and to twist the Wraith off before pulling. The CPU obligingly stayed put and kept its lid on. [Edit: I also completely cleaned off the old CPU paste with rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad and added a fresh dot of Arctic Silver.]

After attaching the heatsink and plugging the CPU fan in, I put my case cover back on and plugged everything back in. However, the power button did nothing. The motherboard's LEDs lit up to indicate it was receiving power, but none of the system fans (not even the PSU fan) spun up. I removed the case cover again to check the diagnostic LED, but it was blank. Not even a 00 or FF error that I'd expect from a poorly seated CPU.

Things I've tried: reseating the motherboard power connectors, reseating the power button connectors. I've checked that the cable for the power button is intact and not pinched or frayed. I checked the memory seating, too. I've cleared the CMOS.

Only thing I haven't done yet is reseat the CPU itself, which I'm about to do, but I wanted to post first in case that doesn't work, so folks will have time to post the obvious thing I'm missing by the time I check Reddit again.

    Standoffs

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 04:09 PM PDT

So earlier this year I bought the NZXT Kraken x62 with compatibility for AM4 (I have a Ryzen 2700x) However I was going to wait to install it since I have moved 3 times in 5 months.
To my point, just 2 weeks ago, I opened up the box with intent to install, and it had the bracket, but no standoffs. I went through NZXT's support system. I was "helped" by two different individuals who told me two entirely different things.

Long story short, they no longer use that same system, and what they have available is not compatible.

Does anyone know where I could find the standoffs I need? It's difficult for me to search since I don't have much time.

    Thank you in advance.

    Cpu Problems

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 03:18 PM PDT

So, i accidentally dropped my ryzen 5 2600 cpu and it bent a bit, so i corrected the pins (using the razorblade method) and realized that one pin broke off... I looked it up and thought i was in luck because it could be "and extra ground pin" or "an unused memory pin". So i tried to install it, and the first time i installed it, no problems, but the power supply wasn't distributing power (at all, not even the psu fan turned on). So i took it all apart, and now when i try to install the cpu and heatsink, i end up messing up, and when i try to pull out the heat sink from the motherboard, it pulls the cpu out with it with little to no resistance whatsoever. Any help or reasons why this might be the case. I might need to buy a cpu, but i am going to try everything before i have to pay an extra $140

Buying my first monitor, so many technical gibberish, help?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 03:17 PM PDT

    Hi fellow builders,

I've mainly play games on a laptop, and I've recently got a better one with a decent graphics card (1050 ti) and a better screen (720p to 1080p) so I've been pushing my graphics settings and I love how nice 1080p@60Hz on ultra looks!

I'm saving up to build my first PC (probably around xmas) and I've spared some money to buy a monitor now (so I can experience gaming on a beautiful screen).

The thing is, I don't understand much about all the technical gibberish of monitors and reading about it doesn't really help because the specs are hard to understand without experience (like how does it feel to play on an IPS or a TN panel).

    Here's my dream set up

    • Graphics: 1050 ti (currently), 1660 ti soon (or the best value card for an equivalent price)
    • Framerate: Stable 60fps +. Will I really notice an improvement on 100Hz+ panels?
    • Resolution: 1440p
    • Aspect ratio: 16:9 or 21:9, ultrawide gaming looks so cool
    • Panel type: I have no clue what to choose
    • Response time: Still no clue, I can understand that 6 ms is worse than 1 ms but I don't know how noticeable it is
    • Screen size: No preference
    • Price: I don't really know how much this is worth but 400 USD seems to be enough

Here are some monitors I've found:

What do you think? What's your setup?
