This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Getting your first PC you’ve ever built to boot on the first go has to be top 10 greatest feelings ever.

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 05:56 AM PDT

Just finished building my first rig from scratch. Had a prebuilt PC before, but had to replace the CPU, Mobo, GPU, and Case due to it being damaged during moving. No issues so far! Would post photo but the cable management has a lot of work to do. PC Partpicker List

Today I built my first pc. I feel awesome. The longest 5 hours of my life.

Switching from a bad pre-built with dual core i3 7100 and gtx 1050ti to a ryzen 5 2600 and rx 5700. Rgb fans add that magic touch. Waited too long on this one.... the satisfaction of building itself is... is unexplainable. Cannot wait for the long nights and session of gaming. Long live the masterrace!

3700X/5700XT build check, unsure about case

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 03:09 PM PDT

    Hey,

after waiting for years (and checking /r/AMD daily) I finally decided to retire my old i7-2600K.

I came up with the following part list, but it's the first PC I fully build myself and I'm unsure if everything checks out:

    CPU (ordered): AMD Ryzen 3700X

GPU: AMD RX 5700 XT (Still waiting for AIB cards and will purchase based on reviews)

RAM (ordered): 32GB (2x16) Crucial Ballistix Sport LT DDR4 3200 CL16-18-18 (I intend to overclock and went for these Micron E-Dies, Samsung B-Dies 3200 CL14-14-14 would have cost nearly double)

Motherboard: ASUS TUF Gaming X570-Plus [WI-FI] (My only concern is the Realtek LAN, but it should probably be fine for gaming, my internet speed is 'only' 70/10 Mbit anyway. Went with it over the Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite due to the lacking debug features of the latter. Not yet 100% sure, but it's probably going to be this one)

PSU: Thermaltake ToughPower Grand RGB Gold Sync Edition 650W (I don't care about RGB, but around 600-650W should probably be enough and I definitely want quality there. Not sure about this choice, it's one of the first I found that looked decent)

Storage: Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 2 TB (I intend to use this one for ages, a bit pricey, 2x1 TB would actually be cheaper, but I might want to keep one M.2 slot open for future PCIe 4.0 parts? Not wanting to cheap out here, still pissed about my Samsung 840 EVO which has gotten all around terrible due to firmware issues)

Display: MSI MPG27CQ 27 Wide Quad HD VA (This is a brutal choice. It's not easy finding a good 1440p 144hz low input lag Freesync display. IPS would be better, but the actual good ones cost thousands. I don't care about the RGB of this one, but thought it might work out after spending a ton of time on reviews)

Case: ??? (No clue here, I prefer a low-key black design with good airflow. No RGB, no side window or anything like that. If it's quiet that's a bonus, but all the quiet cases I looked at have awful temps again. I don't intend to use a DVD reader and my storage is on the MB, so if the front is full of intake fans that would be best. Price point around 100-150€, but I can stretch the budget a little. Btw. you usually have to buy most of the fans yourself, right?)

I'm grateful for any help, Zen 2 can be tweaked so much, I've probably put over 20 hours of research into it so far (and there is an awful lot of choice).

P.S.: I'm from Austria (if that matters concerning parts).

    [Upgrade] GTX 970 to 1080ti / 2080

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 08:17 AM PDT

    Hey Guys !
I've finally decided to upgrade my computer. My good'ol GTX970 still works perfectly, but i'd like to have more possibility, especially now that I'm playing with VR :)

So I've settled my mind, I'm having a GTX 1080ti, or a GTX 2080. I have a few questions, so here they come :
    - I'm still not sure if I should take a 1080ti, rather than a 2080. Any advices on that ?
    - What are the things I should be aware of when changing my graphic card ? I've read so far that :
=> You need to have enough space on your computer, obviously
=> I might need to change my PSU, depending of what I already have, for a more powerful one.
=> High quality graphic cards might require specific screen (Is it true ? I have a 1080p and a Wide screen)
    - Also, i was wondering if i should also update my cpu (I have an I7)

Thanks guys for the time taken to answer me, and sorry for the mistake, non native here :)

    Fortnite budget PC build questions

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 02:41 PM PDT

Me and my Dad are going to build a budget gaming PC that will run Fortnite Battle Royale, Fortnite Save The World, and maybe some other games in the future. My Dad will be running Adobe Creative Suite.

The Fortnite PC requirments are [here](https://www.pcgamer.com/fortnite-system-requirements-and-settings/). After some searching we're hoping to base our PC on [this](https://www.wepc.com/builds/best-gaming-pc-under-1000/) recommended build.

We're going to run Windows 10 Pro using an OEM key.

My first question is, do the components in this WePC build represent a good value and the best choice for our purpose? Next, are there any pitfalls that we should look out for? And last, does building our own PC give us more bang for the buck as compared to commercially available desktops?

Thanks so much for your help here. I'm really looking forward to getting Fortnite running on PC.

Best Alternative to Noctua Fans That Has Better Cabling?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 07:19 AM PDT

I like Noctua fans but I'm super picky about cabling and the cabling that comes with the Noctua fans is just awful ... there's no way to have it curve without kinking. So I'm wondering if there are any alternative companies that make great fans but use regular cabling that can be routed and bent without kinking.

    Picking the right monitor

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 03:29 PM PDT

I've been researching what monitor I should get for my computer but there is a lot of information to take in. What monitor are you using and why/how did you chose it?

BTW I'm looking for a gaming monitor that I could hook up my Nintendo Switch too if that changes anything.

2070s vs 5700 xt, which one to pick in my case?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 05:29 AM PDT

    Hello,

I'm currently building a new PC and I'm kind of hesitating between those 2 cards, knowing that I will mostly play CS:GO at 240HZ in 1920x1080 res, I'll also play other games aswell but it will mainly be cs, I've been trying to find out which GPU has better 1% lows since it will benefit my monitor alot but haven't found any way to compare those,

Except for a video on youtube that showed around 100 fps difference and 50 in 1% low (in favor of 2070s), but if I were to guess I'd say it was some stolen data since there was no real time measurements in that video.

    What do you guys think?

    Looking to upgrade from a 1060 3gb

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 02:31 PM PDT

Although I love my build, I don't think my 1060 3gb does well with my 7700k. My price range is 500 bucks or lower, if possible. I was thinking about getting an [EVGA RTX 2060 SC] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Q1ZJ3ZB/ref=crt_ewc_title_srh_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER) (possibly for VR, but I'm not sure yet) but I'm not sure if I should wait for a price drop with the super edition. What do you guys think?

PSU is hot and smells funny

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 02:29 PM PDT

I recently bought an RM850x and for the first two hours of gaming I can smell some form of plastic burning. It didn't turn off my system but it cost me some freight. The PSU exhaust is also very warm, is this normal? My old PSU an EVGA was never warm and never smelt. I recently posted this just want more answers. I'd appreciate all the help I can get.

    SPECS I9-9900k 2080 TI MSI gaming X trio Aourus gigabyte master 16gb ddr4 (xmp prof 1 clocked at 3200) nzxt kraken x72 h700 rm850x

could it just be my processor and graphics card causing the heat?

Is my CPU running too hot?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 02:11 PM PDT

I've run a prime95 stress test on my CPU and I'm getting 90C. I have a Kraken X62 as liquid cooling and when using the CAM application it reports fan speed at 0.

Is this something I should be worried about?

I also did a stress test on the GPU and I'm getting 75C. Are these temperatures okay?

New build with Zen 2 and X470 not booting.

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 10:50 AM PDT

    Troubleshooting Help:

What is your parts list? Consider formatting your parts list.

Ryzen 7 3700x Gigabyte Aorus Gaming 7 X470 HyperX Predator 1x16gb 3200mhz 16cl Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 OC Seasonic Focus Gold 750w Goodram Sata SDD x2 Seagate Barracuda HDD ADATA SX8200 M.2 SSD

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I built this build just today, when trying to boot it the fans are starting to spin. Windforce logo on GPU is lightning up. DRAM led is on and is color red, BIOS LED is on and is orange. "Decorative" LEDs just turn of for a fraction of a second when I turn the PSU on. When I try to boot the PC, I cannot turn it off in any way but turning off the PSU. Nothing shows up on the monitor. I tried diffrent cables and ports. I am not even able to enter the BIOS as nothing is showing up.

The built in LED screen shows errors: 07>14>15>CC>C2>C8>b3 Sometimes it shows: 07>14>15>CC>C2>C8>b3>FF After last error it goes back to the beging of the sequence.

So i figure it must be a ram issue if the DRAM LED is turned on?

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I tried cleaning the CMOS by removing the battery and by keeping the Clear CMOS button. I tried running second BIOS.

I do not have earlier Ryzen proccesor so I had to rely on Update BIOS service in shop where i bought the MOBO. It should be F41 of F42a. I do not know for sure if they actualy updated it, but the boxed was opened before shipping to me and there was large text on the document in the box saying "BIOS UPDATE" so I don't really think they forgot to update BIOS. Maybe they didn't proceed like Gigabyte said? F.E. maybe they updated to F41 from F8?

I've triem moving the RAM stick to twój diffrent slots - nothing changed.

Provide any additional details you wish below. I am pretty sure that everything is pluged in alright. The CPU went smoothly into the socket and in the right way(the triangles matched up). My Sata SSDs still have some data on them as I was planning to format them during Windows installation. One of them has Windows and all the old Intel and Nvidia drivers installed.

I hope I haven't broke any rules. Tried to be as helpful to you as I can with my limited knowledge about PCs. :)

Switching from Laptop to PC, €450 Budget

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 10:26 AM PDT

I have been "surfing" the internet with a crappy laptop for quite some years. But the thing is, its crappy. Can barely run... minecraft 1.8 with optifine lets say. So I decided its finally time to build a proper pc. My budget is around 450 euros and the complicated part: I live in Estonia. So if You have any recomendations regarding a 450 euro pc build that can do gaming and everyday stuff it would be great. Try to give parts that I don't have to ship from across the world please :)

ps: first post on reddit if sth is screwed with this.

Mobo died. Need help with upgrade options

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 03:16 PM PDT

My x99 mobo has died and it is out of warranty. It was running a 5820k, which I might make a bit of money selling on. Can you help me with choosing the best option?

As the price of a replacement mobo seems to be quite high I was thinking of biting the bullet and upgrading. Been out of the loop for a few years so looking for your guys help.

Unfortunately I haven't kept the box for my wc loop so will need to replace that as well.

Ryzen seems so be the hot option at the moment. I currently have Kingston fury 32gb 2400 ram, from what I have been reading ryzen is demanding faster memory than this.

Can you guys help me out and steer me in the right direction?

Upgrading for the first time since building a PC a millennium ago. Should I pull the trigger?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 03:05 PM PDT

I built my current PC maybe 7 or 8 years ago and have only upgraded the graphics card to a 970 in that time. I want to get a new CPU (the ryzen 5 series) and the necessary upgrades to go with it. I was debating whether to keep my 970 or upgrade but since I'm sticking to my 1080p 60hz monitor, I'll keep it for a few years maybe. I play mostly CS:GO, Risk of Rain 2 now, indies, and some AAA games. Really looking forward to Cyberpunk and running it at near-max 1080p graphics.

Anyways, please let me know if I'm making any dumb mistakes. I decided on the x570 motherboard to avoid any compatibility issues with the CPU. I don't really plan on overclocking. Budget isn't a huge concern if I have to spend a hundred more here or there for noticeable improvement.

    https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/user/Evozexx/saved/bYstpg

note: not included in the partpicker list is a 2TB hard drive I have.

    Thank you in advance.

Just moved house and now my pc loses power

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 03:01 PM PDT

    My Specs:

    CPU: I5 3570K GPU: MSI 1060 6GB Mobo: ASUS Sabertooth Z77 RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB PSU: Corsair TX750 V2 750W OS: Windows 10 64bit

I've moved house this week and have just set my PC back up. My PC will turn on, it boots past the BIOS and gets into windows. Then anywhere from 10 seconds after booting into windows to 3 minutes my PC will die. Completely powers off, no shutdown, just loses power and the motherboard LED isn't on. What's also odd is that after a random amount of time - again 30 seconds to 3 minutes - the motherboard will not receive power (the LED will not come back on). I've tried unplugging the PSU, turning the PCU on and off with the switch built into it, turning the plug on and off at the wall, no matter what I do the LED will seemingly come back on whenever it feels like it (30 seconds to 3 minutes). Any help trouble shooting with this would be really appreciated
